@@crackedpoetgaming the school system isn't really the root of the problem in the US. Yes, it's part, but the MAJOR issue, the MAIN reason it's not effective, is the CULTURE. A culture that allows disrespect for authority, disrespect for fellow students, disrespect for their own parents who do NOTHING meaningful to instill discipline. THAT HAS TO CHANGE before ANYTHING else will mean anything at all.

In September 2017, I quit my teaching career for the EXACT same reasons. After 15 years in, I kept being told to stick it out for the retirement. I no longer wanted to be apart of a system that fails kids, fails good Teachers and that I couldn't change. I'm a middle aged white woman so don't take not having your voice heard personal. The whole system/process is demoralizing.

I felt this so hard. I currently teach at a majority black & latino school in Houston and it's just...ugh. I came to make a difference in a school that needs teachers who care, but the system makes it impossible for me to do my job. My administrators don't know what works and what doesn't, and when I try to do what works, they reprimand me. And when I point out how they're wrong, they just get even madder LOL. So like, I'm moving to Sweden where I feel like I can teach AND be happy. It breaks my heart to leave my kids here in Houston behind, but it's like you said, the system is so messed up you don't even wanna be a part of it anymore because you know you can't make a difference no matter how badly you want to.

First year teacher here at an alternative school and it’ll likely be my last year as well. Everyone says they need black male teachers but most black men are not going to endure all the things that come with being a teacher (low pay, buying your own supplies, being the “enforcer”) all in the name of being some positive role model mascot. Education in America is nothing but big business at the expense of low income children.

But you're absolutely right. It's a systemic issue that runs back several generations. There needs to be true reform from within our communities to change the structure of our schools. Is it schools failing studebts, or parents failing students? If a parent takes A child to McDonald's looking for rump roast and rice, was it McDonald's who made the mistake or the parent. Schools support parents and not the other way around. Time and Time again the research shows us that stable parents can send a child to a much less than stellar school asnd get a student who can read, write, and compute. The problem is not first what schools do. The problem is what and when the parents parent, when communities restrain themselves, and finnally how schools deliver their instruction. In that order. Children are watching parents go on tender dates, while themselves being exposed to God knows what on the internet, and sent to school sleepy the next day. Is it really the schoo? The momma shows up in a blonde wig and a Pink outfit and y'all say it's the schools fault that the child won't behave..... Because learning to read is anything other than discipline and practice 🤔🤨. If the child sees no restraint, disapline, and an unexpected wheelingness to practice at home, you can bet they will bring that attitude to school with them 🤐

Race doesn't really matter as much, parental involvement is the most important factor for a students success and that is challenging in a single parent home. Homelife is something that the child will that with them to school and if that is poor then their academics will also suffer.

Some public schools are messy and chaotic and learning do not take place. I hated the job and prayed for deliverance everyday. One thing I did not do was walk out on the kids. I stayed until the end and got a non renewal because I told the administrators that the things in place were not working to manage kids’ behavior issues. The school cannot keep teachers beyond the first year. It is sad, so many kids are left behind in the public school system. I moved out of state and joined a wonderful community that valued teachers first and invested in our growth. That school changed my professional trajectory. I love teaching and learning.

From one educator to another, thank you for your service! I hope you take joy in knowing that your former students are better because of it. We each do what we can with who God blessed us with. And we do WHAT we can. After that many of us have to move on for the sake of our own sanity/health and to make sure not cheat others close to us. Yo, life on a "quarter tank" is a trip right?! And it's risky when one sees how far they'd have to go on that old public school road... The purpose was one of service. As for you it still is! I pray you reach others in a powerful way thru your service to them now in the photography arena! Be blessed my brotha

Daily, I have to remind myself that I’m needed and that I’m not meant to correct every behavior or deficit. Many of my students don’t know they don’t know and the ones that do, don’t want it from me. Not sure how long I’ll be in the classroom, but I know it won’t be long. Thanks for your transparency!

Good for you, Mack Julion. I admire that you chose not to settle and just slide by as a teacher. I had a very similar experience. I was teaching full time, was feeling completely powerless to change the system, and I quit without a job lined up. I subbed for a bit, but recently found a job as a teacher in an intensive outpatient behavioral health program. It's still rough for other reasons, but it fits me, my values, and my passions so much better. I don't have that powerless feeling anymore. I get to work with students one-on-one and help them find more productive ways to behave... and I hope that it helps them cope when they get back to the oppressive environment at their school.

I'd never thought I would be the one to consider walking away from my students but walking away is what's best for them because students don't deserve a teacher that doesn't have the desire or passion to teach anymore. I've only been teaching for 5 and a half years and I see exactly what you're talking about. I cannot change a system that was never really designed for us. It takes a lot more out of us than most people realize. Thanks for your honesty and vulnerability.

Thank you for your sincerity and courage. Thank you for sharing your story with us, I can tell you that most of us (teachers) have felt in this way. It's frustrating how education is seen only as a business or as a number in statistics. No one seems to really care. It's really frustrating when you are trying to create some change but everyone is going in a different direction. I have come to realize that teaching a big group doesn't really allow you to get to meet everyone's needs, but tuttoring one on one or a small group is a great way to help. I suggest you to join an after school program or volunteer at a school in a your free time, that way you will be able to create change at least in one, two or three people, and that really means a lot! Give yourself a chance, teaching is a constant battle, but the lessons you learn are priceless!!!!

As a Biology teacher for 25 years, my longevity stems from the motive of impacting learning with personal and social responsibility. However, the following issues must be managed to attract more teachers, especially African-American males in the classroom.
    1) Higher salaries (50k or more the first year and annual raise )
    2) Adminstration that reflects the community ( No cowards, but courageous to make changes)
    3) Parent involvement
    4) Student accountability (behavioral standards and academic expectations)
    5) Mentorship ( A Curriculum that involves students building self-esteem and skill set through entrepreneurship and post secondary educational pursuits)

@ Mak, I feel you my young brother. I am a first year teacher. A little back ground on me. I worked 10 years at a CBS affiliate in Texas. I just quit my police career after 20 years. Your story re-insured my decision to teach. There are not enough Black Americans in the educational system (men or women). Your story about the difference in schools are correct but the only way to change that is from the inside. I know self happiness is important but some times we have to make sacrifices in order to make change for the greater good. Just like our ancestors did before us. The struggle never stops, we just continue to pass the torch to the next generation. In my dad being a black teach was something I never dreamed of becoming. Young children of all races can benefit from us teaching in the classroom. We need more black teachers, politicians, doctors, police, lawyers, judges, business men and women. Programs that groom our young to be productive in this country to be leaders. I hope you reconsider and return to inspire within the classroom.

    The focus of the parents.

The way you describe you and your coworkers dreading being at work, and just hanging on till the next day off is exactly what it feels like sometimes in juvenile justice. We work 12-hour shifts with incredible kids who have had very hard lives and caught a long list of charges, and are locked up. They are emotional and quick to react in big, disruptive ways. It is to be expected. But our administrative staff adds the stress of extra rules that don't make any sense, and a similar unwillingness to listen to us direct care workers when we need our decisions supported. Most of us love the work, dislike the job, and would keep doing it if minor rules were tweaked.

Don’t ever doubt yourself. I know you haven’t up to now...but let it sink in that you know how to create your own balanced life. And that is very admirable. You’ll also be a great father! Total respect...

I can understand why a lot of teachers quit! Both the state and Federal governments are running the public schools. The schools are under a lot of pressure to perform up to state and Federal standards and abide by state and Federal laws. The teachers are under a lot pressure to perform up to state, Federal, and school district standards, policies, and procedures. They also don't have the time to deal with special needs kids; as well as give them the individualized attention that they need. They have to teach what they are told to teach; and they have to do it within a certain time frame.
Teachers also have to take a lot of flack from the parents. They also have to grade papers and do lesson plans. They also have non-teaching duties such as supervise the students at lunch; as well as when they get on and off the school buses. If there is child abuse, they have to report it.
No matter how hard these teachers try, it's still not good for the school administration, the state, and the Federal governments. Their whole attitude is "Well you're in the wrong profession," or "Well then this isn't for you."
Teaching is a extremely demanding profession. You should weigh the pros and cons of being a teacher you decide to become one.

I did talk to couple teacher, many shared similar stories with me, then I talk to the students, and I came to interesting solution: compulsory schoo just to 5th grade, then you can either continue or join the workforce, many young people cannot sit in one place for long, they need simply go to work, they could always go back to school when they would realize they need it. To allow the young boy join the work force the minimum wage should be abolished , otherwise nobody will hire they until they will get proper skills

The schools arent failing, parent (usually no "s") are failing. Schools are a reflection of the neighborhood and the parents, not the other way around.

It’s both. There no reason you should be stuck with the school that matches your zip code. You should be able to choose the school that is best for your child. They know, no matter what, that the school will be filled with students. Nothing changes.

True. Blame parents and community culture over "system" which is the same generally everywhere...

LonesomeJohnny1 it’s the same generally everywhere because the system is the same everywhere... not only do you have to fix a broken “culture”, you have to fix the broken system. Can’t fix one without the other.

I relate to what you said about one group of students usually getting a better education than others. I spent grades 5-12 (2011-2019) in NYC's public school system in predominantly black neighborhoods. One day while in high school, my volleyball team had a game at a school in Manhattan and their school looked like a freakin' hotel. It was simultaneously hard-hitting and depressing.
