Same here. In early childhood education, most of us go through all of this, and we have no access to a union. I worked one place with a union, but it wasn't education specific and they were often overworked too. We need more advocacy on our behalf.
I was a teacher for 30 years.
I had other jobs outside teaching.
Teaching was the only one where it was difficult to go to the bathroom when you needed to go.
I was treated better as a fast food worker than I was as a teacher.
Sounds like a small thing, but the general public just don't understand that teachers are "ON" all the time at work. There is NO downtime. None.
Exactly! I literally worked at pizza hut for 3 years and was treated much better lol.
Interesting. Speaking of being "ON" all the time, teaching is a lot like acting, and acting is no easy profession. For example, I've been watching one of my favorite British tv shows lately, Rumpole of the Bailey, starring Leo McKern (16 March 1920 - 23 July 2002) the famous Australian actor. In reading his bio materials and videos, his daughter stated that he had had TWO nervous breakdowns. I presume that was because of the extreme pressures of the profession, always being "ON," forever memorizing those thousands of lines.

I quit teaching, went back and got another bachelors degree, and just got a new job with a salary that is more than three times what I was making as a teacher. So far it looks like quitting teaching is one of the best decisions I've made in my life.

Just a thought: Isn't it just a sad state of affairs when something as important as teaching is so undervalued that teachers either need a second job just to get by or to quit entirely to save their own lives (literally!)? In an ideal world teachers would be making as much as software engineers, because teaching is just as important if not more important.
I just resigned mid year. I lost my life in 6 months. This is my 3rd year in education, but my first solo teaching job. I worked non stop 18-19 hours a day grading, lesson plans, documentation, emails etc. On top of that my students were disrespectful everyday. They would talk in class everyday and barely do any work or turn in stuff extremely late. The behavior problems alone are exhausting & added to my do list.I have had enough. This job weighed in on my health. This is my last week. I feel a burden being lifted. I am moving towards something new.

What grade do you teach? I know this will sound horrible, lol…but don’t grade every assignment you give out. I know in Florida all you are required to have are 18 grades. You should use excel to create your lesson plan and re-use them each year; of course you may need to make minor changes. If you’re teaching middle school use points to control their behavior. I have them in groups and each group has 2 red points and 2 black points. Remove points if they are off task or they are doing something they aren’t suppose to do. Honestly, if you do this from the beginning they will self-monitor themselves. However, if you already found something better I say go for it. Good luck
@@2112jp Yes I did learn not to grade everything. This is my first year teaching. My district only requires 2 grades per week. I was stressed with the behavior and disrespect. If I go back it will be SPEd or adult education.
@@2112jp reuse them each year? That's great if the give you the same grade level. Didnt happen in my world so had to re-plan every single year. Was at school 6am - 11pm (forced to leave when the custodians left). Your points advice is super smart and hopefully teachers will remember to try pos reinforcement as much as they can. When there isn't (principal/district) support, tho, these golden moments don't even matter.

Excellent commentary. I left in March, 2019 in the midst of my 23rd year in public education - elementary level. A nervous breakdown forced my hand and, now almost two years later, I am still recovering from that breakdown. I applaud you for seeing public education for what it was so quickly and leaving the profession so soon. Teaching is like an abusive marriage. You give, give, and give some more but your abusive spouse is constantly gaslighting you, making you feel like everything is your responsibility and your fault, and making you feel like $hit about yourself.
23 years!!! Congrats on leaving. I'm sure the longer you teach the harder it is to get out. I am so sorry to hear you've been struggling with mental health as a result of pub ed too. It's soooo true we wouldn't put up with that kind of behavior from a partner or a family member so why should we from our school districts!
Teaching itself is not abusive but the way the public school system is run is abusive. It’s the system that’s in place is completely broken yet the job of teaching a child is one of the most rewarding on the world. I’m home educating my 3 kids and it’s very rewarding .

I taught for 35 years . Started with race riots in 1968 Teaching is death on the installment plan. I realized on my third day that the only good job in the building was the Janitor.
The change required to "fix" the problem is immense. It requires politicians, administrators, parents, and society in general to care and realize the damage they do by not prioritizing learning.

@@LivingWellMedia You're welcome. I loved teaching, but the politics of it and some of the teachers (who felt like they were more worthy) annoyed me. I didn't deal with parents as I was a substitute, but I know that they "allow" bad behavior at home so it shows up in class. I meant to respond right away but got drawn into the web of UA-cam comments.
Agreed. The first step however is for (ex-)teachers to put their foot down and say enough is enough.
I started teaching in 2021 and I have reached the point of resigning as well. Your video made me tear up because it’s like you were talking to me. I am always burnt out and tired and my mind can never relax. I’ve had panic attacks and nightmares about school to where I had to be put on Xanax. I have developed several stressed induced medical problems and I just cannot take it any longer. I went from being happy, confident, healthy, excited and full of ideas to being withdrawn, anxious and under so much medication. I have wanted to quit within the first month, but hung in there to my detriment. Thank you for helping me find the courage to stand up for myself and realize that it’s okay if it’s not the job for me.

There is nothing a teacher can do to stop the disrespect other than leave.
@@marteung they will but you need to get certified in something else. I moved into IT & make 2.5x more than I did teaching & I can go to the bathroom while working anywhere with an internet connection.

5th grade !!! I could never past 3rd grade lol. I subbed for a while too. I LOVE that idea! How would you like to expose the ugly side of the education system like do you have any ideas if you want to start a channel, blog, book or something else?? I feel the same exact way....I worked in surgery as a medical assistant and I honestly believe that was easier than this job. I am leaving teaching in May.... The expectations on teaching are absolutely ridiculous. I'm going back into the medical field after taking a much needed break.
I also worked in the medical field as a surgery assistant before teaching that the stress was much less. I too am leaving and going back to the medical field where the stress is less and we are actually supported and appreciated for our work!
This girl is very young and will have many more opportunities. What of older teachers that have been in it for awhile? There is true ageism out there and getting hired in another complete field seems pretty hard. Also, if you’re not married, and only have one income you’re barely making it as it is and the concern would be you won’t be able to find another job.
I was an MA too but the pay compared to teaching is too great where I live to even consider

WOW, what experience and perspective... with your credentials and me considering going into teaching at 54. makes me think my current occupation isn't so toxic
I retired after 31 years in elementary education. That was four years ago. I am still waking myself up at night with school nightmares - the culture and school atmosphere was killing me. Teaching ruined my health, relationships, and destroyed my family time. I had no time for anything except school work, even during holidays. Summers were spent in professional development classes - I had one vacation in a span of 28 years. I spent well over $2000+/yr. to buy supplies so I could teach my subject at multiple schools. It was such a relief to tick the survey box in 2019 about our plans for the next school year. The last box was "I am not returning" - check! Such a rush!
Thanks for sharing. My story is similar to yours. I am doing much better after therapy. [Not implying you have to!] I'm still on PTSD meds. 😮
Well, this hit home for me! I am leaving teaching at the end of this year and going into school counseling. I feel like teaching now is equated with being selfless. I am kind, helpful, generous, but I am not (and do not want to be) selfless. I realized that I have a self, and I need to start taking care of her too. What you said about people thinking "can't you go to the bathroom on your lunch break?" My school starts at 8:00, and some teachers do not get a lunch break until 12:00 or 12:50. Or, their lunch break is at 10:15, and then they aren't free again until 2:30...it's just not right. Thank you for speaking so thoughtfully about this topic.
Congratulations on your career change!! I hope you like it so much better. I love the way you put that -- I so agree teaching has become a toxic cycle of victim blaming and toxic positivity. To give everything is a savior complex. We need to have boundaries and put our own oxygen masks on before helping others. Such a good point about the ridiculous schedules we're meant to perform like machines not human beings with physical needs. We're not robots! lol. I really believe that we are underpaid because it’s female dominated.
I also think teachers would be pushed around less and expectations would be lower if it was male dominated.
I say this all the time. This ONLY happens because it’s a female dominated profession. A profession of men wouldn’t deal with half this nonsense.
You articulated what so many teachers in the U.S. are experiencing. I am near retirement, so I am planning to finish a couple of more years, but young people just entering or studying to enter the teaching profession, I say, “I LOVE teaching; I just wish we’d get to do more of it!” School, society, and the whole world has changed A LOT over the course of my career, but one thing has always been consistent: I always think, “maybe I’ll be good at this next year.” You’re right, the frequent evaluations and public opinion keep us feeling like we’re never enough. Parenting has changed over the years. I learned in college there are parenting styles: authoritarian (too strict), permissive (too lenient), and the effective style, authoritative. Then we got helicopter parents who don’t trust us. They turned into lawnmower parents who mow down a smooth path for their child. Now we have bulldozer parents who harass and verbally abuse their child’s teachers. Fortunately, they are not the majority, but they will consume the majority of your resources if you as the teacher don’t recognize what’s going on and get back up from your teammates and admin. We’re already in a state of feeling not good enough, so when parents blame us for the student’s misdeeds, we are prone to feel guilty and try to fix ourselves or the classroom environment instead of the parent working to fix the child’s behavior. I could go on, but I’ve got to go finish prepping my lessons! I’m proud of you for getting out early. Thank you for this post.
I’m also going through the onset of a pretty extreme burnout, so I’m hoping to make it through the rest of this year by trying to schedule out personal days. Even then, that’s stressful! It’s impossible to balance it all and feel like I’m being successful. I have more work-life boundaries than I did my first year, but I’m still so emotionally and physically burnt out. Not working multiple hours after school & on the weekend, makes me feel ill -prepared. I know my mileage is different from others, but still, within the education system in the U.S, it feels impossible. I’d like to see more videos on the current education system overall, thanks for sharing your views!
Totally because of all the planning and preparation that goes into sub plans! I'm so glad you're setting work-life boundaries for yourself...in education I know what an uphill battle that is. Ooo maybe an interview with teachers talking about the education system from various perspectives? Thanks for the idea and for letting me know there's someone else out there who "gets it"!

I am in the exact same boat. I just took a sick day after dealing with a school shooter threat… it’s ridiculously hard to go back tomorrow. Also, parent/teacher conferences are this week.
I feel like I’m listening to myself talk about my experience…you are spot on! 16 years and left in 2020, went on medical leave in 2019 for most of that year due to the health issues from this stress. The teacher that took my place quit 2nd week of school her second year. It honestly made me feel validated when that happened, not that I feel good she went through that just that it shows there are problems with the job not the teacher. I told my admin the reason I’m leaving was unrealistic expectations. They know this is the problem, but do nothing to address it. The admin are finally starting to feel some stress through these staffing shortages which for their part I don’t have much sympathy. They have known and continued to push more on our plates. I do sympathize for the teachers who are feeling more stress from the shortage. Glad you got out! My only regret that I didn’t leave sooner!
I could NOT imagine sticking it out for 16 years. Was it better in the beginning? I'm so sorry to hear you suffered from health issues related to teaching too. I completely get what you mean by how you feel for the other teacher but it does feel validating. You are not "crazy" or "imagining things"! You don't have to pretend problems away with toxic positivity strategies. It feels validating to read so many comments here about other teachers having similar experiences. I originally made the video to spread awareness but it is certainly making me feel validated right now haha! Good luck with all of your future endeavors! :)
@@LivingWellMedia it was definitely better in the beginning…but I feel the downward spiral was slowly starting then and that spiral really sped up my last 5 years to where we are now. I think sharing our experience is definitely helpful and validating. We are all mirroring the same things we’ve experienced so it can no longer be ignored there are problems with the profession not the people in it. We can’t self care our way through this, there needs to be serious changes. Good luck to you as well!
It's frustrating to me that other people out there and even my spouse don't understand how hard it is to be a teacher. They think we're asking for too much, and we're just weak to not being able to hang. I'd like to challenge anyone to just be a sub. for one day before you criticized the teachers.

So true! Unfortunately, teaching is one of those jobs which, to the outsider, looks really "easy." That's what you get from a lot of people, that you have such an "easy job." To put it in sports terms, teaching is rather like badminton, or slow pitch softball. They look "easy," too. BUT THEY'RE NOT! Just get in there and try it!
Yes exactly. I am still working on my certification. Once I get my certification. I'm going to try to get a 1st grade position or become a sub being certified. It is challenging.
Nobody can really understand unless they experience what we do in the classroom because the normal person outside can't comprehend what classroom life has actually come too. It is incomprehensible to me and I live it everyday! It has gone so far into the garbage it truly doesn't make sense. That is why teachers are driving themselves into the ground trying to fix things that are beyond our control!

I was a middle school math teacher for 12 years in Title 1 schools and saw so many of these situations. This is a good comprehensive look at public schools in the US in so many ways. As somebody who is transitioning to the tech world, I will not and do not regret leaving teaching. If you are not too far into your state teacher pension plan, QUIT NOW OR SOON. DON'T DELAY. Make plans for a new career starting now. This job crushes you from all sides. Plus guess what, your relatively low salary won't allow you to do nice things to relax when you get those few free time hours in your life away from teaching.

22:35 yes! I worked in education all they want us to do is teach them to pass the standardized test. Not do any real teaching. Teach them to pass the test. I hate that so much.
I'm leaving teaching after just 3 years. Im going to focus on grad school and start my career as an instructional designer. I refuse to be miserable until retirement.
First of all thank you for all you did for your students. Second, I was a substitute so I can vouch for you regarding the superhuman involvement required to be a good educator. Third, most parents do not know the children that they have sent into the school building. Their bundle of joy are often the bane of their teachers.
I’m with ya!! Your reasons are exactly why I resigned this past year. Too much for one teacher to handle. I spent thousands of dollars on my classroom. That money should’ve been in my savings.

I’m 3.5 weeks into the school year and planning my second exit strategy. I quit teaching in October of 2020- hybrid teaching and ridiculous expectations wore me out. I went back to teaching 2021 after 9 months out of the classroom because I missed the kids. That was my very best school year to date. Ever. Excellent students, incredible faculty, and admin was genuinely there for you. Life does what life likes to do, and my husband and I have to move in October, which caused me to switch counties. The students are great for the most part, but classroom management is always a challenge. The faculty here is just…so… bleh. It’s the only way to describe it. There is no sense of community, which so critical to have knowing how challenging this profession can be. Admin is up to their brows in resignations, and with no end in sight, support for us is minimal. I’ve decided that moving into the role of Activities Director is my best move while I transition out of education entirely. I do have my own business as a freelance hair and makeup artist, but while I grow my clientele, I needed to have something consistent to pay bills. There is no “fixing” the system. It’s doing what those in power designed it to do. That’s why there is no real effort to pay us what we’re worth-there will always be a fresh-out-of-college hopeful willing and ready to jump in. And the door will always revolve.

Teaching in Sweden is just the same. Class sizes are typically 28-29 students. I had the exact same experience with the "parateacher" (it's called something else in Sweden). And the headmaster actually favoured her and gave her credit for when a student succeded.
That's terrible! When I was in college they told us the class sizes in Sweden are smaller but apparently not sheesh! That is so annoying and I can imagine it probably felt incredibly disrespectful. I am so sorry to hear that.
I've always heard such great things about Sweden schools. So sorry for your experience.
@@AD-rg8tz I think schools in every country aren't that good. It's a physically and mentally draining job that requires a lot of recovery. Unfortunately you have to continue working outside your work hours, which leaves no time for recovery and leisure. I'm definitely looking to switch careers in the near future.
@@LivingWellMedia Yeah I felt like no matter what I do, it goes by unnoticed. All the extra time and effort you put in. It's just not worth it burning myself out. I want to have time and energy for myself and my family at the end of the day. Teaching won't give you that.

I’m hoping for a technical trainer position teaching corporations new software! Yes, that’s still teaching but with far less expectations and disrespect allowed. Fingers crossed it works out!
Customs Brokerage loves teachers because regulations change frequently, so they need quick learners. Companies like FedEx and Livingston will train you and there is room for advancement in that field. You get paid for overtime too!!

Congratulations on your retirement! The commentary in this video was 1000% spot on, including the lack of lunchtime and bathroom! I am lucky to say that after 30 long years, I am retiring in may 2022. Physically and mentally, I just can't do it any longer. It's been way too much for way too long.😣

Thank you for highlighting the facts about teaching in the USA. I teach in NYC and it feels the same. This year I am teaching kindergarten, when I normally have been teaching upper grades. I told my principal that this would be my last year. I have given 9 years and it’s impossible with all the new and changing mandates.

I watch these to remind me why I walked out. But I’m still having nightmares…..teaching gave me PTSD. Not kidding. I gave it 100 percent, after retiring from the military. I was treated like crap. Disrespected daily, by students. Disrespected by Principal every single day. Didn’t even speak to me!!!!! Told other teachers I wasn’t a “real teacher” because I wasn’t from Indiana!! Omg, the list is so long.

Class size is the biggest problem! People want to blame a teachers for the lack of student learning! Nope... Class size and placing value on education by the home unit is the problem!

That para-educator situation sounds like an absolute nightmare. Terrible that there is no accountability for that.
Everything that you said in this video is spot on correct! These are the exact reasons that I am leaving teaching after this year. I am so disgusted trying to do what my job entails and putting the needs of my students first, because we are constantly being derailed by the never-ending crap that is undermining us to be the first rate teachers that our students deserve. I am absolutely not leaving because of my students! I am leaving teaching because of the adults and the new curriculums that do not support the needs of all of the students. Sadly, it's the students who are suffering. The adults will continue promoting their agendas and to justify their jobs until they force all of the dedicated, certified and experienced teachers to leave who can't mentally and morally take it anymore, until our public schools are completely driven into the ground.
Fortunately for me, I'm about done, gonna retire after 32 years. One thing that really bothers me is that when teachers say they can't go to the bathroom during classes. That's bullshit. We let students go during class, and if not we can find ourselves in a precarious situation. So if I gotta go, I go between classes. If admin doesn't like it, eff em. They are going to dictate to me when I can or cannot perform a bodily function. They would je looking at a serious lawsuit if that ever comes to fruition. Kudos to you that are sticking it out. For those who are leaving, I perfectly understand. It is a sick 😫 system and that is an understatement.
So glad your video found me. This year has been hard. Because I was struggling so much it lead to my AuDhd diagnosis. I’m at the end of my rope and my mental health can’t endure. I’m late diagnosed so I mask my struggles but it’s gotten increasingly difficult, when I get home it’s complete shutdown.

I have a friend who is a teacher and she got burned out. She still wanted to be a teacher so she changed to help-teacher with focus on one child with learning difficulties. I think that made it easier for her. Lots of teachers gets burned out. It’s a stressful job. And you also bring it home with you. I completely understand why you quit. I admire teachers a lot. Your mental health is very important. Gotten burned out myself, I know how horrible it is. Insomnia, exhausted all the time, if unlucky; depression and panic attacks and pure anxiety. Treated like trash is simply awful. Some people are just terrible. The person you mention should change her direction to another job with no kids. Or perhaps with no contact with any people. @Living Well Minimalism Well, I got cold after cold but no Covid. Tested and it was negative. Every winter I'm infected by different colds, but I'm used to it so no worries. Therefore, I'm out in the countryside. It's harmonious and I feel pretty mentally great having nature so near me. Just a step outside my door. I am nevertheless very exhausted all the time, that's why I'm not active at all on social media. Simply too tired. It'll get better coming summer. I hope you're okay and can feel less stress. I could never be a teacher although I've been a day or two with my kids each for a whole day during junior high and also kindergarten. I was completely T I R E D when I got home. It was very fun and talking in front and with the kids etc. But not for me. I did see many great teachers but also some who really shouldn't work with kids at all. Love ❤💗
Omg, every word you said is 100% true. I worked myself ragged as a teacher and after 8 years just could not do it any longer. I was always one of the first ones in and usually the last one to go home. I taught 2nd grade for 4 yrs at a title I school and the math book looked like a highschool text book it was so ridiculous and inappropriate developmentally. I was a first yr teacher and didn't know what I was doing yet the curriculum materials made no sense. I had every special needs child in the grade put in my class but no one hired to help service them. I had a girl from Haiti who didn't know the alphabet, a child who wore a helmet and would run from classroom to classroom, a boy with a feeding tube, a girl in a wheelchair, and tons of crazy behaviors. I would lose 20 lbs each yr when school started. That first year I barely made it through those first 9 weeks and only survived because a self contained special ed teacher offered to have my entire class move in with hers and we co-taught for the next 3.5 years! I counted the days until the end of those 9 weeks and like you, could barely eat. I would gag over my breakfast in the morning I was so sick with anxiety. The behavior and span of needs in my room should have never been stacked like that in any teacher's room, much less a first year teacher's. There were 4 teachers that year in 2nd grade and THREE were first year teachers! We were basically left to fend for ourselves. I quit mid-year to go overseas to teach, which was worlds better but still so much work I just couldn't do it any longer. Oh, and the year I quit they started requiring teaching to have formal observations FIFTEEN times a year. I could go on and on about the nightmare that was teaching at that school and there isn't a day that goes by that I'm not so thankful I got out.

I can't believe you did that for 8 years though! I can't even imagine lasting that long. I'm so sorry to hear what this public school system made us go though. Its not surprising we went through similar problems inside the school building but what I am surprised about is that we even had the same physical problems as a result!! I wanted to make it through the year but was losing it and wasn’t getting the support I needed from my administration.
Everything you said is what I dealt with as a Kindergarten teacher. I believe parents need to start raising their kids. Teachers cannot be the parent and educator at the same time (in addition to the other things that are required which only a teacher would understand). The story you had about the girl being rewarded for stealing just goes to show that when that little girl grows up - if no change happens - she will end up learning the hard way that life doesn't work that way. You don't get rewarded for stealing. And she is just *one* in a sea of children that are growing up with that kind of "parenting".
On the contrary. Life IS like that in the present bizarro world. The leftist cities and states have made it essentially legal to shoplift and murder and if a store employee tries to restrict or catch a thief, the EMPLOYEE gets fired. That little girl received training for the real world as it currently is.
Rewarding someone for stealing is unprofessional and incompetent. That fact goes a long way to explain what is wrong with our schools. Who are these people doing these insane things?

Lol it happened just once the 3x in a week because my admn got behind on evals and needed to catch up. They're supposed to be more spaced out then that. It was soooooooo anxiety provoking!!!

I dropped out of teaching right before I got my degree and went into pastry. Which I feel like was honestly just as awful. The comment about the bladder infections hit home for me because working in a kitchen I also would have 14 hour work days with only 1 bathroom break (if I was lucky) and would get them often as well.
I've switched to private- smaller class sizes, planning time actually written into the contract- there are extracurricular commitments but at least they are written into the contract, not some random add on where they expect teachers to be everything all the time and just throw more at you. I feel like I've let the public system down but you can only give so much- for new teachers: the first year is the hardest, it does get better (my first year I was basically non functional, severe depression totally shut down just trying to do my job) but the burnout is real, and the lack of gratitude is too- if you really want to be a teacher try it out for 3 years (with as strict boundaries around work/life balance as you can manage) and then take stock.
This teacher is very candid and right on in her remarks. Administrators should take notice.
i’m in student teaching right now and I can’t eat, also immediately dry heave when I wake up in the morning, puke every morning (thought I was pregnant for so long) and sometimes throughout the day entire day. ended up in the ER two times because i vomited so much i was beyond dehydrated and lost so much potassium that my whole body cramped up and i couldn’t move at all. not my fingers. not anything. it’s so stressful being a teacher nowadays and there is so much that goes into being a good teacher and not being a good enough teacher for the kids using the boring and overly complicated curriculum content kills me. so I am deciding to withdrawal because I can’t handle the anxiety and vomiting anymore. I am graduating with a CSAT major and early childhood minor. I hope I can find a job that would take me with this without being certified to teach. i’m just wanting one on one connections and to help kids learn, without going without sleep and food, vomiting, having anxiety attacks 24/7, and crying every time I wake up and go to bed.
I am proud of you for putting your health first! The entire education system is going to implode in my opinion. I know someone who is doing the same masters program as I did right now so they are actively in student teaching like you and they are choosing to complete their degree without the cert too. I thought about doing that...and looking back I wish I would have! Hindsight is 20-20 I guess. I am a freelance tutor and if you have any questions about that I'd love to help but.... You definitely have options!

My student teaching experience has not been pleasant. Been cussed out by a student, students constantly disrespecting me because they know I’m not a “actual teacher”. I’ve just been mentally exhausted and I can tell that it’s affecting my spirit.
I teach at a boarding school. The class sizes are smaller, but the days are longer and there are no weekends. It’s definitely a demanding profession and it isn’t for everyone. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

@@LivingWellMedia Some days I do, some days I don’t. Classes are Monday-Saturday. I prep on Sunday afternoons. We have a lot of vacation time which is great (we just got back from a three week spring break), but being on 24/7 will drain you with all the supervisory responsibilities there are. However, the kids really enjoy me as their teacher so I always try to keep things in perspective.

I have so much that I wanna say, I just can't go into it all! I do want to say that I think it's hilarious that people ask you why you would quit teaching, I often think about all the teachers I know and wonder how they are still teachers? Hasn't it killed them yet? And they have kids too! I found the environment so unbelievably exhausting spiritually, mentally - and I'm not a teacher! I'm an educator! I could go home at the end of the day and that was the end of my day.
There are also all these weird things you experience as a teacher or educator that you would never think of ahead of time. I would feel uneasy walking around in my neighborhood, going for drinks because I was afraid I would see a kid, a parent or worse, my boss (she was like a cult leader) and I would be 'found out' for being human!!

My kids will never ever set foot in a public school. I am hopful that change can happen in these toxic environments. So glad you clearly saw what was going on and got yourself out.
Zero pee time, 10 minutes for lunch, planning period non-existent! I was punished for complaining and forced to stand by restrooms during my lunch break, after all “you can eat standing up”! When a teacher didn’t show up, they made me take half of those students! My lesson would fly out the window, and they told me to just give them all “IPad Time”.
Just came across your video. I do experience some of what you talk about. I am a teacher and I am planning on leaving the profession. I yearn for more time with my family. Hence I am more focused on other ways to generate an income that are not so demanding.
Amen and Amen! I transfer to a high school from a special needs School and I have a triple the work now! We have mandatory meetings three times a week plus a meeting with my department head once a week! That's for meetings in a week that I have to attend. I have 80 students and when I got here, they told me I have to do 30 IEPs plus attend the meetings and lead the meetings. Something I have never done before! I thought that IEP coordinator does that at least at my other school they did. I feel so overwhelmed plus the different rules that they have in place now because this is a failing school in which I didn't know at the time I transferred here. I can relate to everything you're saying because I am on that journey right now and school just started a couple of weeks ago and I am already drained!

You are wise and keenly aware of your standards for simplicity, balance, and connection. Good for you that you tuned out what others were saying about not leaving teaching due to your investment in schooling. By that action you honored your true self. You have a bright future ahead that will be uniquely designed by you. That being said we collectively cannot ignore the antiquated school paradigm. Our future as a country depends on a radical rethinking of this system. No one wins in our current situation. The kids miss out on the education they deserve. Teachers in general are leaving because the abuse has been sustained too long and its taken its toll. The old paradigm does not align with what teachers know is best for students. I can agree, on all that you say, the toxicity in education is far away from the quality system it used to be and the many hats we are forced to wear is exhausting. Thank you for sharing your experience. I was in an integrated kindergarten room (half of the students in SPED half general ed). I had a student that needed a lot of help in the bathroom (he had a disability and needed more 1:1 support) and I was expected to help verbally somehow while Teaching the rest of the class. Idk about you but how do they expect us to be in two places at once...I believe in the program but the adult to student ratio with some students who really need a 1:1 para. Congratulations on getting out and prioritizing your health and good luck to you too!

As a former teacher myself, since so many teachers have been so emotionally broken by years of abuse from administration and parents to even imagine going on strike, the only thing I’ve seen us able to do to force states into finally examining ways to fix education is our mass refusal to continue supporting their broken system.
To stay is to support and encourage the abuse of the other teachers and the students who are learning from observation that this is how adults are supposed to be treated in the work force.

I was in a low income school growing up and now have had a much better life than I could have ever hoped for and my teachers are the reason for it. For every one burned out (or straight up horrible) teacher I have ever had, I had seven good ones. The lemon teachers are rarer than ones that are burned out.
I only recently discovered the trove of teacher stories on UA-cam. I left teaching 3 years ago. I cried for months, but now I am simply relieved. You said something that I haven't heard anyone else mention although it is something I say often: teachers are abused bc it is a female-majority profession. Because we are women, we can be denied respect, excoriated for perceived "sins" without real error, paid next to nothing, made to work OT without compensation, et cetera. Until teachers recognize that their treatment occurs bc they allow it - nothing will change.
As someone who has been a student most of my life, I can relate to what you said about the relief about being able to make your own schedule. It seems many teachers and students are aligned on that issue. Yet, the factory aspect of the school system creates so much unnecessary discomfort and for what?

So glad you brought up the bathroom issue. One year I had back to back classes Wednesday morning. So I literally could not go to the bathroom between 8am and 12pm. It was a private school, so after classes I also had to be a coach. And after dinner I had to be a dorm parent. So I was literally ON from 8am to midnight (at least) every day. And I did not have weekends off. Every weekend was spent driving kids to events. It was insane. No way. I'm out. And I'm not even telling you the bad stuff that happened. All I can say is don't become a teacher. It's not what you think it is.
we never got a break and some principals expected us to be on our feet the entire day and did not want the teachers sitting. the principal said when she walked into the room she expected the teacher to be on her feet. we had no bathroom breaks and what is a woman supposed to do with a monthly cycle? i had to leave.
Our school has 0 paras. We are k-8. Everyone is overwhelmed.

I am a 29 year veteran and I understand why many teachers are leaving. If these teachers were to send their accounts of why they have left the profession to the US Department of Education, then perhaps something might be done or they could fall on deaf ears. I am sorry to hear about what happened with that parent. I would have walked away and stated that I would not meet her unless you had an administrator present. No teacher deserves to be treated in that manner. Pacing guides need to be thrown out the window when it comes to teaching, especially now because they were made before pandemics happened. Wow almost 30 years that is incredible! What did you teach? There's an idea... I'm sure I could find a few friends that would send their accounts that were in my same cohort in school. People who have already left the profession would be more likely to send something. I think those who still are teaching would be afraid of speaking out for fear of loosing their cert or job (even though that shouldn't be the case) ...its an understandable fear. I totally wish I would have handled it that way! I was in total shock. Hopefully someone else will learn from my experience with that. Completely agree with ya about pacing guides. I have so much empathy for our teachers who are still there with the aftermath of the pandemic... Thank you for sharing your perspective and for supporting my channel!
I am still in the profession and have been an elementary school teacher since 1992. Some administrators have forgotten what it is like to be in the classroom and that is terrible. I am hoping to continue for another 8 or 9 years depending upon how I feel. It is all about managing your energy and protecting your peace as much as possible.
Your point about teachers sending their accounts about being in the field is spot on. Everyone sees this crisis, yet nothing is being done to change how things are done, and what is expected of teachers.
I participated in a focus group being conducted by the U.S. Government sometime in the past six months. A study on the teacher shortage is being conducted.

That sounds hellish! I'm leaving teaching in England mid year. I teach teenagers but have many of the same problems, especially the class sizes and lack of time to plan and struggles to go to the toilet. It is insane. Even having to plan and send in work when you're really ill. That really pisses me off. The kids deserve much better than what the system is set up for. Maybe things will change, but as the population is only increasing at fast rates I doubt things will get better...
You know the same thing happened to me about a health issue and it's not been easy to come back and I don't even want to but at the same time I feel guilty. I started a UA-cam channel few years ago over some crimes and wine and such that I sample with my other job, however, I was recently thinking about doing a video of why I want to quit teaching as well. Just feel guilty about it and like it's hard to let it go in a way.

Oh my god you mentioned the bladder thing. I got a horrible kidney infection last year because of this. I am an art teacher so I had back to back fast paced classes all.day.long. With only 1 planning break to go pee since my lunch break was generally too short to comfortably eat and go to the bathroom. I remember trying to ignore how lowsy I was feeling until I literally was like peeing blood for 3 days because I didn’t feel like I had the time to slow down and after work I was so exhausted the idea of sitting at the doctor during my precious free time gave me such anxiety. Now looking to leave I realize how crazy this sounds compared to how any other job operates.

I just finished watching this. I left full-time teaching 2 years after NCLB. That was when everyone was left behind including the teacher. That's when all the crazy increase in paper work came plus the craziness with parents. I'm so glad I'm not the only who sees that what we teach is for a time that long past. The systems in place years ago do not match today's environment. Also, the profession does not match the inflation. We are the degreed working poor. My mom and I graduated with degrees together and started with the same rate of pay. She received a significant pay raise in 6 months after starting and I went back to get only a $1000 a year pay raise. Like you I could go on about the reasons I left plus why teachers are leaving now. I sub now when I have time available from work. There is no way I'd go back with the way things are now.

Well I have been subbing for 10 years and I've done a lot of long-term substitute positions and even worked at a couple schools all the time one being where my two daughters went to elementary school. However, I'm even getting tired of the substitute teaching.

Teachings hard bc of the red tape/ take home aspect but subbing is hard bc you know how hard it is to go from different classes and have command of the classroom regardless of how long you've had to really build that! So much respect for long term subs teachers!
NCLB was intended to help break the public education system. It worked.
14 years in Education considering leaving in 2024. I feel really anxious and stressed about this decision but is affecting my health and instead of recovering from breast cancer (2021) I feel the stress from the unrealistic requirements is affecting my health. I feel deeply disappointed and I feel I am throwing 14 years of experience in the trash can 😔

It's incredibly sad and devastating so many parents being controlled by their kids... I didn't want to be that parent and watched so many Dr. Phil episodes and other troubled kids episodes where kids that don't get healthy boundaries can be dangerous nightmares for society....not all cases but definitely it happens...so I make sure to teach my kids be attentive. Listen to their concerns no matter how small they seem to me they are big for them. And the more we neglect ignore or overly punish the more troubled and hurt they become...

I didn't necessarily quit teaching. I came back to it. Giving it another chance.
They fired me because I called out abuse in the school. They tried to hide it. But the principal that fired me....ended up getting fired because she fired me. Parents found out.
I'm teaching privately now as a musician. I don't think I'll ever go back to teaching in school.
Many states like mine don't have teacher unions. I do belong to the NC Association of Educators but it has no power to negotiate contracts.

I taught abroad in Saudi Arabia in an international school led by an American administration 😑and I learned quickly that the entire system was ridiculous. That’s not an insult it’s the reality of the time teachers actually taught and focused on their students vs all the other things they were forced to do by the administration. I took the position because it was a cultural experience and I loved the students. However, the US admin were …..I am not kidding ~ evil. Like, legitimately they used words like “you’re being insubordinate”!?…..🙄 Whaaaat is this a prison???😦I laughed at how absurd this all was. I also heard some of the veteran teachers talking about this (not going to the bathroom) issue. That was beyond believable and I could not believe even one teacher accepted this kind of behavior from their workplace~ that’s basically an abusive relationship🤭 I’ve taught online and lived abroad since that contract ended. Looking back I loved living in KSA for the most part ~except the manipulative admin. Its ridiculously funny/ weird because I remember getting written up for "insubordination" in middle school myself...literally the same wording lol. It was because I was told to spit out my gum (and I honestly was NOT chewing gum) so I had nothing to spit out. The teacher wrote me up and when I asked why she just said you're getting written up for insubordination not for having gum lol. You can't comply by spitting out gum that doesn't exist. I was 14 and literally so genuinely confused. It is like an abusive relationship! That's such an interesting comparison... I've never thought about it like that but its so true. I'm glad you still enjoyed your time there in spite of it all and have been able to have more adventures since :)❤

I am leaving the classroom after 17 years. It’s not worth our mental space. Not worth it!
The state says the admin is not supposed to have meetings during our teacher conference… yet most days we have a required meeting.
Also, I was a kinder teacher that did not choose to do the Reading Academy (Texas) so now teaching PreK. Have you heard about how overwhelming the time commitment is for RA? I’m close to retirement and chose not to do it.
Currently, planning to leave/retire at end of first semester.

I have been teaching in Alabama for over 27 years. I am a high school teacher. I don't recognize the system you are describing. For the most part my kids are good. My parents are fine. My administrators are fair. As a teacher I do the best I can. I don't always succeed and that's ok.

We do need good teachers, but WAIT, we had good teachers. Children have always been a task to simply control in a good direction. My friend is a loving person that taught school and left after having the ill mouths of children cursing, spitting and getting physical. Parents are the problem and it stems from government policies. When a mother has children to increase what the government allots for that child....it is a business of having children. Now that child has no discipline at this home, turns criminal long before becoming adult. I am so glad she is no longer teaching having to deal with ignorant rude children.
