Why you should be weighing your glaze applications (and a few other glazing tips)

  • Basically, the easiest way to know exactly how much glaze you've added to a piece is to take the weight before and after applying it. It makes it easy to be consistent across time and over a range of different clay bodies (important if they have different porosity).
I use around 20-30g glaze mix (including water) for my mugs, but the best thing to do is weigh a typical application of your glazes on your pieces and see what works for you.

The results are worth the effort to be consistent. If you want a matching set of anything consistency matters. Very beautiful products.

Yeah, it's definitely worth the extra effort to get matching sets that bit more consistent.

I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I'm slowly getting through all the videos. I went to a fine arts school and I miss the pottery lessons so incredibly much. It would be really fun to pick it up again some day.

Ah. Very timely. Thank you. This will explain the not quite as I expected variations over test tiles that I have had recently trying out your Nebula glaze.

Yep! Nebula is a weird glaze anyway, but it's particularly sensitive to application thickness

@@OldForgeCreations I hope you don't mind but does it prefer thick or thin?

Definitely thicker. Too thick and it starts to crater, but too thin and out won't be able to reduce the copper and turn interesting colours
