30 years ago today (4/5/24, the date of this comment). Rest in power, Kurt. People are still discovering your art all these years later, and feeling the same way we did when we were young, and you were still with us. I hope you would have liked to know that. 💙
I've always loved "I wish I was like you, easily-amused." I know it's probably more to do with his darkness, but it sounds like a fun way to call someone simple-minded.
The opposite is actually true. There’s an association between boredom and intelligence, according to several studies. However, the common belief that it equals lack of creativity or capacity for recreation is a mistake. In any case, higher intellectual abilities are definitely indicative of less boredom.
It seems like a genuine desire to let go of the cynical nature that can come from depression, and a longing for that child like innocence, to be easily amused with the simple joys of life
A lot of people hate on Nirvana and Kurt’s talent. They can’t reconcile how good he was doing very little. The music is uncomplicated, but undeniably very good. People would sell their souls for their rapid and atmospheric success. Nirvana didn’t just change music, it changed style. Women in the 90’s gave up spandex and big teased hair for low rise skater jeans, tanks and flannels, and flat combed hair
Honestly, it's a lot harder to do something relatively simple that's so memorable...the Ramones were masters of that. If you have a construction crew and a lot of expensive equipment on one hand, and one guy with a hammer and some nails on the other, and the guy with the hammer still builds you a house, it's a great deal more impressive.
For someone labeled "the spokesperson of a generation" to have his head down and say "What else should I write? I don't have the right..." just breaks my heart. He was a beautiful person and I'm so happy he gave his music to the world. I feel the same way as you when listening though. Sometimes I can't bear it because it's so heavy, but then life comes along and I'm drawn right back... It's his empathy and sincerity that make the music cathartic, and not just entertainment. Thank you for your reaction; your honesty and emotion mirrored his beautifully.
I appreciate your comments at 3:30. I was 22 in 1994 and all of my friends were in a deep sense of shock when the world lost Kurt. To a degree this pain lingers and to hear someone so much younger mirror those feelings is remarkable. Thank you.
"It might be nice to start playing acoustic guitars and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter, rather than a 'grunge rocker' you know? Because then I might be able to take advantage of that when I'm older, and sit down on a chair and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash and it won't be a big joke.” -Kurt Cobain Summer 1993 Well, you did, and we loved it. Didn't sound like a man planning to leave to me. Happy belated Birthday Kurt. R.I.P.
He wasn't gifted he had passion for punk rock. I think no one's is god gifted everyone has to work hard to be who they are and Kurt was lazy but definitely worked hard to gain popularity.
Kurt and me are the same age, I was so proud someone from my age group became literally big as the Beatles. Nirvana has sold 75 million records to date. If you noticed Kurt tune the E string back up, it’s because this song was written in Drop D tuning. When you see the price of concert tickets today, I’ll let you in that it costed $17 a ticket to see Nirvana live in 1993.
I appreciate how much this Gen Z young lady is trying to understand and describe something that is a piece of art before her time. It's fascinating listening to and watching her reaction to something we took for granted when the radio version had been out for a good while. Beautiful .
Thank you so much for this and for your wonderful deconstruction of such bittersweetness. He is absolutely crying/pouring out (and crying out) through his voice and lyrics. Incredible. Evocative, profoundly sad, completely vulnerable and wholly human. Thank you again…brand new subscriber and fellow musician/teacher/eternal student.
I WATCHED THIS UNPLUGGED WHEN IT AIRED. I WAS TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH KURT, THIS WAS MONTHS BEFORE HE DIED. BROKE MY HEART. BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE. AWESOME HEARTFELT REACTION RAYACTIONS!! 😊🩷🤘✌️ I LOVE GRUNGE, RIP KURT COBAIN AND LAYNE STALEY AND CHRIS CORNELL 😢 💔 ONLY ONE LEFT OF THE BIG 4 IS EDDIE VEDDER/ PEARL JAM ❤
Such a great song and such a legendary performance. Still one of my all-time favorites. Thank you so much, been looking forward to you listening to more of their unplugged concert 😃
I've been thinking about this song, and this performance for 30 years, so please don't feel bad about not being able to put the emotions into words right after hearing it. Tortured is a good word for his vocals in this whole concert. Haunting is another.
I remember watching this as a teenager when it debuted. Was all about kurt since they burst onto the scene. Thinking back, it was like the John Lennon of that generation.
I would love a review of ANY of the songs of that unplugged album it is simply FANTASTIC such a shane we didnt get anymore from Kurt because I feel he was really coming into his own as an artist, who knows what rlse he could of and would of done!!😢
This show was for most Nirvana fans would be the last performance they would see before Kurt's demise. This song from this show was constantly being played from what I remember. To me, this gutted me and could understand the pain fans felt when John Lennon died.
Few know that that this show almost never happened. Kurt wasn't sure the fans would embrace it, or that he was geared for an acoustic performance. Never forget what a damn treasure this is.
It's hard to watch that Unplugged, though I love it very much. I was a senior in high school in 1994. They had just installed TVs in each homeroom, so we could watch a program called Channel One with Anderson Cooper and Lisa Ling telling us the news, smashed between commercials. I'll never forget the morning, the day after, Anderson Cooper telling us at 8:09 in the morning what had happened.
Love your reactions, yeah Kurt was unique shame he went so young. Nirvana was so important to the path of music a lot of younger people don’t even come close to getting it. Nice to see the appreciation 💯
I think someone either with the MTV team or his nirvana crew said that Kurt was adamant that he didn’t think he did well and that it was an overall poor performance, despite the whole world feeling otherwise. He was trying to kick heroin and was struggling with withdrawals as well as a bunch of stress/nervousness at the time. I also read somewhere rehearsals for this performance were less than stellar so I think him barely looking up probably had a lot to do with him trying to lock in and be perfect, as well as maybe being embarrassed it wasn’t that good (in his mind)
This unplugged performance was Kurt Cobain showing the world that he is so much more than just a front man in a grunge band, and he has so much more to offer. And when you listen to it you can’t help but wonder what could have been. The world lost out on so much great music the day Kurt died.
Always enjoy your reaction. I can tell the music talks to you! I can see it in your eyes. Keep up the great work. Cobain definitely was one of a kind! RIP.
It doesn't surprise me that Kurt barely looked up...he was a pretty shy guy when all was said and done. They didn't really expect to blow up the way they did...none of us did.
I've heard their rise described as, they just wanted to make music for teenagers to listen to in their friends' basements, and it accidentally became the biggest thing in the world... Geffen records didn't expect Nevermind to sell more than 250,000 copies... It flipped the entire music industry on its head, at the time...
Thanks for your reaction. You bring me back to my teen years. I was at one of their last shows, about 2-3 months before he died (february 1994)--I knew something was coming, he looked so depressed on the stage. Was a great show, but a bit rough in the middle of a crazy crowd (came back home with a few bruises, cuts, smashed toes and a missing tooth. I got it about your apologies (we're from the same country, so I understand what you mean). Greetings from Montreal & have a nice day, Ray.
Listening to alot of the lyrics of these grunge artists and knowing what happened to so many of them....they were telling us. It's right there. Sure, many of the songs were about other things specifically, but you can see their emotions and thoughts embedded in the lyrics. RIP Kurt. Gone too soon
One of my favorite songs ever. Not sure if you aimed for this, but I got some ASMR vibes from your vid. That calming feel good feeling in my brain and neck. Damn, I love that sensation.
In the sun I feel as one. In the spotlight/stage he is home. But he's sun burned/ hurt by the spotlight. Married/buried he knows he is not long for the world and is apologizing for all he couldn't be.
Gosh, you're so right. It's really hard to watch his MTV live performances sometimes without crying, just knowing what happened to him and the inner turmoil he was dealing with. I remember the day in 1994 that we heard the news he had died. Rest in peace Kurt 🙏
I can remember the first time I heard Nirvana playing at a friend's house as clear as anything. I can also remember the moment I found out that he'd died which says a lot about their impact over 30 years later. Not many people or bands that fuse themselves into your consciousness like that
Nirvana is on everyone’s mind as we head into the 30th anniversary of Kurts death on April 5. The day music died …Layne Staley also died on April 5, 7 yrs later
Remember like it was yesterday. Watching this show in my first girlfriend's basement, being completely hypnotized at the screen, love so much the emotion when he sings... then, the unthinkable happened ... :(
I've been reading the comments, and I sympathise with the thoughts and emotions. I want to remind everyone, though, that Kurt didn't write this. It's a 30 year old cover of a 50 year old song.. David Bowie wrote it and released it in 1970. I like that Kurt made it his.
I recently stumbled across your videos. I’ve enjoyed the videos I watched thus far. I’m big into nu metal and grunge, if you haven’t reacted to it yet I recommend The Only by Static-X. R.I.P. Wayne Static (the singer). Also the purple hair is cute af. Keep up the reviews.
Dave Grohl said it himself, the song seemed hopeful at the time when In Utero came out and only after his death did people start "connecting the dots" and trying to find clues everywhere. William S. Burroughs said that upon hearing about Kurt's death, he bought the album and looked through the lyrics but all he found was the same energy he felt when they met at his house. He didn't feel like Kurt was saying goodbye, it was just his style of writing or whatever.
But it wasn’t the last song he recorded…..so sorry to kill the drama, “you know your right” go ahead and tell me how that song the actual last song he ever recorded is so perfect and linked to him being dead months later. Doesn’t fit as nice does it….. Kurt had no plans of suicide
Thank you for the feelings. For the great band. In the today's world , where to feel , means you being weak, immature and unsucssessfull. Well, Kurt proved it wrong
If you notice the guitarist sitting in the back with dark hair, his name is Pat Smear, and he is also on the Foo Fighters lol.. This is where Dave and Pat met, while they were playing for Nirvana.
Kurt always acted like lyrics were an afterthought for him and they didn't really mean anything. I believe that as much as Heath Ledger's Joker saying he doesn't make plans... Might have been a defense mechanism. Saying your inner thoughts to the world is scary and if people don't get them or like them, then he could always fall back on, "well, they don't really mean anything..." I could see that. Either way, nothing to be ashamed of from where I stand.
There's a thing that happens here that is now lost to music. Out of 6 instruments, 3 are out of tune (in the modern way of looking at this). The 3 in-tune are the drums, cello and Pat's acoustic. The bass, Kurt's guitar and Kurt's voice would not be allowed on a modern recording as they would be corrected to make them "in perfect pitch". You could do that but you would completely ruin the performance and the song that it is. The out of tune drone in the background of the song is what gives it such an impact and a platform for the lyrics. It is so rare for modern bands (and I mean really, really rare) to be allowed to put a part in that is not in perfect tune that the beautiful effect of recordings like this are possibly lost forever. The "music industry" discovered autotune and at that point, they destroyed music.
I always loved Nirvana but back when he was alive I thought he was a whiner, but then he validated his negative lyrics on 4/5/94. People try to find a deep meaning in his words, but he'd say he just strings totally different lines together without much over all thought. I was born 1 1/2 years before him.I remember when they were nobody's.
I’ve heard they also got him brushes as a gift a little while before this shoot. He plays them on a couple songs. You’re talking about the hardest hitting drummer in the business he definitely had trouble playing softly
I can't realize that I was just 17 year old... I mean... I can't realize it's been 30 years ago... It's like if it was last evening to me... Because I was raised inside a "cult", it was part of the soundtrack of the emancipation and discovery of the outside world. Where did all that time went ?
how can anyone not love him
In 2024 no one is at this level. Is finish

@@pfenton9315 That's actually really sweet.
I really would have loved to see what he would have made.

He's talking about his daughter. Think about when you were a kid and didn't understand the problems of life. I miss being easily amsued.
the whole unplugged session is amazing. lake of fire, the man who sold the world
Lake of Fire & Plateau are probably my favorites, partly because I know he liked playing with the Meat Puppets.
I loved watching Unplugged. As a whole, this is my absolute favorite Unplugged session.

I miss Kurt a lot, but I always get a smile from seeing little Dave Grohl on the drum kit and Krist playing with his jaw hanging wide open! 😀
Dave is so intentionally gentle on the drums its very cute 😄 You can hear him thinking "soft soft soft!"
What about Pat's legs swinging because his feet can't reach the floor?
The guitar he is playing is the most expensive guitar ever sold. $6 million.
Apparently it isn't sold anymore too??

His vocals, his raspy belt, I agree with you. They are stunning. He told several people that he wanted to burn out, not fade away.

I've been watching this a lot 2022-2023-2024
Legendary band.😊❤

I made me a tshirt with "All in All is All we All are" line.💔
Such raw talented voices that you don't hear anywhere else today.
Kurt Cobain
Elvis
Michael Jackson
Freddy Mercury
My favourite Nirvana song. See Dave has got pads on his drum sticks because Kurt complained he was hitting the skins too hard 😂
I’ve heard they also got him brushes as a gift a little while before this shoot. He plays them on a couple songs. You’re talking about the hardest hitting drummer in the business he definitely had trouble playing softly
Amazing set
His voice one n only
Kurt most handsome and talented
