ALL THE LINKS ARE IN THE PINNED TOP COMMENT FROM ME. In this video we continue the series from yesterday's video on why I am not Protestant. Here I cover ten top reasons I am not Roman Catholic. I focus on Vatican I, the papacy, doctrinal development, Uniates, Filioque, absolute divine simplicity, the Vatican Bank and many, many more glaring innovations of the last millennium that are central features of papalism. Papalism ends up in sola Papam - the entire religion ends up revealing around the pope and papal apologists are all papal lawyers.

Still the biggest Charity institution that has and ever will have existed, now considering God IS Charity, quite a hint, isn't it?
One simple thing destroys Orthodoxy: Ecclesiology. Which national race is the one True Church? Egyptian, Greek, Russian, Ukranian, Syriac? What a mess...
Do you really have confidence in convincing people that the main representative of Christianity, the Pope and the Catholic Church, is but a decoy for a one true, secret and hermetic national church? Sounds a bit calvinistic.
The Holy See of Saint Peter, who represents the entire catholic church, has conquered the world, against 4 other sees that tried to compete and just ended up breaking themselves apart.
Please, gather with Christ, don't scatter among pharisaic nationalisms...

I've been studying for the past year seeking an answer to where in Christianity I belong. It didn't take me long to get over my protestant upbringing, but it has been an entirely different matter trying to discern between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. For a while, I felt that I was leaning Catholic, but for the past month or two, I've been far more convinced of the Orthodox's stance. I hope that I can finally make a clear and confident decision one day with no second-guesses.

Hey, Jay! I appreciate your video! Last weekend, I left Sedevacantist Roman Catholicism. I became a catechumen last November but did not formally enter the Church yet. Like you, I couldn't reconcile the Traditional Catholic arguments. One right after the other, especially the Cassiciacum Thesis argument is complete doublethink in conflict with other "Catholic" dogma. When I would talk about it with other Sedes, they told me I'm just a catechumen who can't think for himself and focus on other things like learning catechism, etc., despite their system being largely based on Scholasticism, lol. I thought I was going crazy, but one day, I cried out to God and said, "Where is the Church you established? Does it even exist?" The very next day God answered my prayer when He led me to discover _Finding the Church that Jesus Built_ by Deacon Ezra Ham of St. Elijah in OKC on UA-cam which was an awesome seminar. I never ever heard the things about Church history communicated in that seminar! Praise God! I am now making plans to convert to Orthodoxy. Thank you for your channel and all you do to promote the truth of the Faith Jesus gave us! Subbed!

As someone who was raised Catholic but is Ortho-curious, I found this concise and interesting. In light of the recent amazonian synod and the lunacy surrounding it, I'm trying to come to terms with a topic you address here. My thought is, can we deny the legitimacy of the church simply because its ordained leaders are behaving in ways that are anywhere from goofy to outright heretical? I know there is the concept of infallibility but at the end of the day we are dealing with human beings who may have been misled or deceived to behave in a fallible way. Basically, I feel like I would not be honest with myself if I were to abandon the church just because I don't like the way the Pope is acting. This is just something I've been mulling around in my head for a while and this video is making me reexamine again.

You should also read over the documents of Vatican I and Lumen Gentium 25 from Vatican II to know what the RCC actually teaches about what you have to believe as a Roman Catholic. If you disagree with these things, you are either anathematized or committing grave sin, meaning you are not going to be saved according to RC "infallible" teaching.

Roman Catholic here...same boat. Taking my wife and kids to our local Russian Orthodox Church this next Sunday just to get familiar.
We have an FSSP but it's a bit of a drive. We have a very small SSPX close by that I have attended but I'm feeling like this whole tradcat/radcat thing is just hopium and cope and eventually the Vatican will stomp it all out for good.
My son just got his Confirmation. My daughter still has 3 years of CCD classes before hers....the only Catholic Church in the area with a CCD school is a Novus Ordo one which we get stuck going to.
I've been so torn about leaving or not leaving but our NO circus mass (full of looney toon priests, Star Wars homilies, one altar server guy with a Fr33m@$on ring and 🌈 solidarity bracelet, female altar servers and female eucharistic ministers, lifesize cardboard cutout of Bergoglio up at the altar, mega cucked weak sauce homilies, etc) just added in a hippy guy with a GUITAR for music during mass now.....🙄🤮 (where am I? Might as well be down the road at the Baptist free for all Jamboree)
I'm done. I'm just so over this clown world BS anymore. I have to deal with it every day of my life in the world but I refuse to deal with the same crap inside the supposed House of God. No way.

Wow, excellent Jay. Folks like us had to spend years wading through these documents and practices and suffering from severe cognitive dissonance before finally leaving for Orthodoxy.
Improper Christology leads to all sorts of wrong views in theology. You do a great service
Since I came from the trad milieu and share your cerebral inclinations I know you know what you're talking about. I've read and come to many of the same conclusions over the years.
One of the biggest reasons you highlight against Rome is its loss of its liturgical sensibilities. I would argue that even the average trad chapel lives in a severely truncated sad caricature of what the Latin liturgical tradition used to be.
Anyone reading my comment ought to read Geoffrey Hull's "The Banished Heart" for a great glimpse of what Rome has done to its liturgy, or even Father Cekada's "Work of Human Hands".
    God bless you Jay.

If Jesus was just a yogi who practiced Hinduism and died for denying Judaism (not as the literal son of God, 2nd person of the trinity) then Christianity isn't true. The claim Jesus just taught Hindu teachings (perhaps repackaged for a Jewish audience) undermines the fundamental teaching of the Christian faith.

I would further emphasize the Roman changes to the Sacraments including: Eucharist under one species (the "blood is in the flesh" argument is pharasaism), not consecrating hosts at the liturgy, reversing the order of the sacraments of chrismation and communion; all these are huge problems that predate Vatican II.

Jay, though I have espoused the Old Calendarist position in the past, the fathers who really helped me see the error in the way they resist the modern heresies is St. Optatus of Milevis and St. Augustine. They really nailed out the character of schism in writing against the Donatists. Both will argue, that the Church of Christ isn’t relegated to a tiny couple of cities in a single nation of the world. Moreover, St. Augustine makes the point it is SCHISMATIC to break the communion of those bishops who innocently have no idea what the controversy in question is. We don’t approach other bishops in a controversy assuming they’re wrong. We assume they are right until they manifest that they are in error, and we ALLOW for a third category between Orthodoxy and heresy...error! Imagine that!
Moreover, the 15th canon of the AB synod of 861 that everyone loves so much is a canon where you are allowed to withdraw your bishops name from the liturgy if he is a public heretic. It’s a way of safeguarding from spiritual communion with his heresy, which is good.
But notice what it is NOT, it is NOT setting up a second rival altar! It is NOT setting up a second episcopal see. It is a provision against contagion. Hypothetically I suppose many bishops in resistance could band together, but they need to make clear they are a provisional structure pending the repentance of a local Church- like the Catacomb Church or ROCOR.
Anyway, all your stuff is great, love it. Maybe do something on the zealots and Old Calendarists. Just remember they’re not all created equal. Some are psychopathic, some just are trying to be what ROCOR was in the 80’s. Rough times.

I would wonder how the “liturgical reforms” of Pius X presaged, in any meaningful way, the greater reforms that began with the Holy Week Bugnini reforms of Pius XII and continued to its ultimate manifestation of Novus Ordo. Pius X changed feast days only because of the huge amount that had begun to impede on sundays. He began a different way to institute chant on a more local level, but this could be said to be a more reactionary move to bring the deepest liturgical chant to a more wide use, thus enriching the liturgy by the opposite means of the reforms that came later. This was really an expansion of what he did as bishop of Mantua. I assume you mean that the very concept of introducing reform was started under him and taken to be an example of why the later reformers could do what they did?

    • @JayDyer
      @JayDyer  4 роки тому +4

Larry Cera look up the liturgical movement. It set the precedent for “going back to the sources.” It was a major factor in ecumenism and it was popular far before Vatican 2. Benedict XV also liked the Leaugue of Nations. The idea that liberalism just suddenly took over is absurd en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liturgical_Movement

I always used to argue that Vat I's dogmatizing the papacy to demi-god status opened a pandoras box that directly led Rome down a path of papally sanctioned tinkering and destruction of what was left of the Latin Rite Patrimony.
Pius X changed the 1500+ year old psalter arrangement in the Roman Breviary and Pius XII messed around with Holy Week, opened the door to modern Historical-Critical Bible scholarship and overturned "Lex Orandi,Lex Credendi" in Mediator Dei. He also opened the door to the absurdity of "Theistic Evolution" in Humani generis as well.
Papal innovation just became emboldened after Vat I, and trads looking to men like Pius X and Pius XII as bastions of Tradition are kidding themselves or simply ignorant of what the tradition was prior to their meddling so they don't know better.
      What's absurd is

      J. D. Yes agreed, and it can be seen by the great variety of opinions regarding Pius XII by trad and sede groups today. Ultimately this can be returned ad infinitum, as Pius V standardized unilaterally as well, and this points to the collection of power in the Roman see that looks at the whole world as a single diocese with the Pope as the bishop, which is truly the source of the problems.. As for Pius XII, I agree although two points must be kept front and center regarding your comments: the reforms and shenanigans took place after he took a turn for the worse in health (which comprised much of the last ten years of his pontificate), and the lack of condemnation of theistic evolution wasn’t his choice. He wanted to condemn evolution in Toto, but was dissuaded by advisers because of the memory of Galileo. The vatican feared a repeat of the Galileo situation in the event of some “missing link” fossil evidence was found, which was expected more so than not at the time. Much of the progress that many thought would come on this subject was retarded during the two great wars, and there was still fear that more would be found once large scale endeavors were picked up again.
I agree on the absolutely abominable situation of Vatican I. Reading the great dissenters like Hefele, Kendrick of Saint Louis, Henri Maret, et alia., the same arguments used today by orthodox were used against infallibility by some of the most learned bishops of the council.
I just see the innovations as being no different than Vatican I itself, in that they are both the result of the super bishop charism that necessitated a justifying ideology that would lead to errors regardless of who was at the helm. This is why the bulls by John XII coming after Nicholas III are so interesting. John XII revoked Nicholas’ bull Exiit, which stated that the mendicant Fransiscans lived the true gospel life passed from Christ to Peter. John XII realized this implicitly condemns the rich and luxurious lifestyle of the Vatican and abrogated it. He then produced Extravagantes and then Quia Quorundum in response to the Fransiscans who claimed the original bull was irreformable and thus logically infallible. He stated that to claim a pope couldn’t be corrected or reversed by a successor is “pernicious audacity”. He declared that the Father of Lies led his opponents to claim a pope can’t be revoked on faith and morals. Here is a pope speaking with his authority to the whole church from his official capacity and saying popes can be disregarded even on faith and morals by a successor, because they can make mistakes. This flies in the face of everything Papal dogma would become, and implicitly condemns Satis Cognitum. I haven’t come across any work on this beyond Tierny, but his work is unobtainable in print and he has passed.

I’ve never seen such love for the sacred scriptures and a balanced approach to the canon. My question is I’m an Ex Jehovah’s Witness baptised at 14 as Jw, came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour last year. Since this was not a baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost would I need to be re-baptised? How would I go about moving towards that? I don’t fully understand the teachings on Mary and while I’ve listened to a few Catholic apologists and debates but I still do not feel comfortable with these doctrines. Edit: Also, your argument about it just taking too long for the dogma of papal infallibility taking too long to be defined is beyond stupid. The logic does not follow at all, as I could make a similar argument about the trinity. "Oh, if the trinity was so central to Christian thought, then why don't we find the word trinity in the Bible?"

This video was very clear in the points it made, which is a credit to you. The blog pieces you have written are also very well written. The issue is, you sometimes don’t capture the entirety of the opposite sides evidence. For example, the piece you wrote titled “5 Simple Arguments Against the Papcy,” misrepresents the evidence for your first argument, or at the very least, hasn’t considered the fullness of the evidence. In it, you recall that Pope Innocent III as well as many other popes and theologians have condoned capital punishment. However, you haven’t pointed out that these popes and theologians make a very specific condition: “It must be remembered that power was granted by God, and to avenge crime the sword was permitted; he who carries out this vengeance is God’s minister” (Pope Innocent III). St. Augustine stated, “The same divine authority that forbids the killing of a human being establishes certain exceptions, as when God authorizes killing...when He gives an explicit commission to an individual for a limited time.” He goes on to say “Therefore, it is in no way contrary to the commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill' to wage war at God's bidding, or for the representatives of public authority to put criminals to death, according to the law, that is, the will of the most just reason.”
It is especially important to understand this. So you can see that the older representation of capital punishment only referred to punishment according to God’s law and God’s authority. We must be careful to read a breadth of writings on the subject and not pick out what we think is evidence to suit our needs

Could you explain some objections about Eastern Orthodoxy? These objections are:
    1. Eastern Orthodoxy is small denomination amongst wholoe Christianity (only 6 - 12%).
    2. Roman Catholicism and Protestantism success in spreading of christian faith and in missions but Orthodoxy fails.
    3. Eastern Orthodoxy is present practically only in E and SE Europe. What about other continents, where Orthodoxy is nearly absent?
    4. Considering the above statements and claims that baptism is necessary to salvation and that baptism is valid only in Eastern Orthodox Church, one can conclude, that nowadays practically only inhabitants of southern and south-eastern Europe can be saved? Is this not an even more fatalistic and pessimistic conclusion than Calvinist predestination?

      1. There are supposedly around 250 million Orthodox Christians, making it the 2nd largest Christian group behind Roman Catholicism. Unfortunately, the argument from numbers is a big failure. If you want to argue that the most numbers must be right, then you should convert to Islam--it's way bigger than Roman Catholicism. Most people are easily fooled, which is why the argument from popularity is a logical fallacy.
2/3. Orthodoxy has been having tremendous success in many parts of the world in missions over the last 20-30 years. Before that, you must understand that Orthodoxy has been under constant attack from both Islam in the Middle East and Communism in Eastern Europe. In Russia currently the Orthodox Church is building a few churches every week. We're seeing a massive renaissance of the Orthodox faith, and it's spreading in many parts of the world, especially in North America where Western Christianity is collapsing.
      4. You're bringing a Western presupposition and a Western paradigm to Orthodoxy, which is not surprising because most Western Christians know absolutely nothing about Orthodoxy and can't understand it. The Orthodox Church actually has a completely different view of salvation, heaven, hell, etc, than Western Christianity has. It has a completely different view of God. The Orthodox Church doesn't obsess over "validity" like Roman Catholics tend to do, they're not striving for a bare minimum spirituality like Roman Catholics saying "at least it's valid". They're more concerned about what's efficacious and will lead to a conversion of the heart and a healing of the nous. Moreover, the Orthodox Church does not speculate about where grace is outside of the Church, it only knows that grace is found in the Church.

Hefele, who was among the most learned bishops in the world, actually pointed to Leo’s tome as an example of an ex cathedra statement that the council still didn’t take as authoritative in its own right, but that they were told “read and judge” and not “read and submit”. Catholic apologists today say the opposite, and claim only their version has ever been believed. Brian Tiernys work on the origins of papal infallibility being from the Fransiscans in the twelfth century is also eye opening.

I'm the one who made this comment a year ago, I have nothing against Orthodoxy or Catholicism, and you realize that not all Protestants agree on what the Bible teaches, many Protestants for example don't believe in Sola Scriptura, the reason why I said I'm a "Biblical Christian" is because I want to detach myself from any of the 3 branches of Christianity, I agree with ALL of them in some way or another, I believe they're all true Christians, but I just choose to follow the Bible, its my personal choice but that doesn't mean that I think everything else that is outside the Bible is false.
