  • In this 1972 conversation, B.F. Skinner explores the origins and core principles of behaviorism with Elizabeth Hall, offering insights into how human behavior is controlled by external forces rather than free will. Skinner dismantles the traditional concepts of freedom and dignity, showing how operant conditioning and reinforcement guide all behavior. This conversation delves into the implications of control, punishment, and the illusion of autonomy, aligning with The Nacre God & The Goners Club’s message that human beings are nothing more than biological machines acting out pre-programmed responses. Watch Skinner challenge the myth of the individual mind and control in a discussion that mirrors the central themes of our channel.
    WARNING: This video may shake the foundations of your beliefs about human freedom and control. Be prepared to confront the truth that you are not in control, but merely a vessel for conditioned behavior.

    I have endured years of terrible abuse , yet never abused others or in any way wish to do so, on the contrary I have always sought to improve the lives of others and live honestly seeking knowledge.I am not special there are millions like me .Our environment didn't control us we were born free in mind an spirit and we will remain free , despite any attempts by gentlemen such as this to deny our individual dignity.I may be wrong but I suspect he decieves himself, perhaps motivated by a desire to control others rather than a true understanding of the nature of people and their free will. I am not immune to influence but my freedom to reason is intact.

      All that you've said is not you, it's the society in you, the knowledge you experienced is something automatic in you, you can't stop your brain from translating since if you stop you will find you are not even alive

      You are underestimating your brain wiring. Props for rising above your harrowing childhood trauma but it doesn't take much of a change in writing to predispose you to act aggressively or succumb to the pressure.

      Can you make a decision without it being prompted by environmental factors? What about the decisions themselves, whether good or bad would have based on memory of something we have learned or based on our instinct, programmed by nature. It may feel as though we're free, but that in itself is determined by factors outside our realm of realm of control.

    One can also be a vessel for unconditioned behavior; however, I concur that this occurs not from free will, but rather spontaneously.

    To quote Skinner. 'You're not free to do what you want, because you're not free to want what you want'. Where does the want come from? For instance, born 200 years ago and you didn't want an IPhone, Trainers, worried about paying the electricity bill, the effects of AIDS and the surrounding emotions... Examples are endless. We are a product of our genetics and social, economic and physical environment. E.g., biology gives me the apparatus to talk, the environment determines what I talk about.

    Great video. Love me some Skinner. I was looking at your profile. My only question is "Why?" To what end does your mission strive? I find you as worthy of being listened to as any other human. But your mission seems impossible. I learned early that all of humanity was living in utter delusion. As obvious as it is, it keeps becoming more obvious as events unfold. I don't think the delusion is breakable without a total civilizational modernization. The breaking of all current paradigms.

      Appreciated, but I must clarify that I'm not operating from a "why" or a mission. The very premise of questioning "why" suggests an illusion of personal agency and purpose, which simply doesn’t exist. There are no ends to strive for because everything is just part of an unfolding process, devoid of inherent meaning or direction.
      I have no concern for humanity or civilization as constructs. Nature and the universe operate independently of such concerns. My observations stem from a recognition of the confusion surrounding thought and existence, not from a desire to change or modernize anything. The idea that a civilizational shift could break delusion is another illusion. Delusions persist regardless of our perceptions or actions.
      In short, I'll be contradicting and negating constantly and my contributions are not about achieving anything or seeking understanding; they're a reflection of the ongoing processes at play.

      @@thenacregod but yet, you ARE striving for something. So by doing that, you have hurt your message. Because it's now obvious that even the person posting it does not believe it. And in that respect, your post is exactly like all the others: people spouting stuff they don't actually believe.

    • @thenacregod
      @thenacregod  День тому +5

      Your assumption that I’m striving for something is where the misunderstanding lies. There is no "I" here with a mission or a goal-this is about dismantling the very notion of the self that clings to desires and aspirations. What you perceive as striving is simply the automatic functioning of a biological machine, reacting to stimuli and conditioned responses.
      The point I make is not about holding beliefs or advocating for a particular outcome; it's about recognizing the futility of seeking meaning in a world constructed by narratives and illusions. To suggest that I must believe in something to communicate it effectively misses the essence of what is being conveyed.
      This isn't about belief or conviction; it's about pointing out the delusions that bind humanity. Every claim to a mission or goal, including the one you attribute to me, is just another layer of that delusion. I’m not advocating for any paradigm shift or modernization because those are just more constructs of thought-tools used by a mind attempting to impose order on chaos.
      Your critique seems rooted in the assumption that communication requires a personal stake in the message. But what if the message is precisely that there’s no individual responsible for belief, action, or mission? The narrative of the "self" is an illusion, and my engagement here is about exposing that illusion, not perpetuating it.
      In essence, I'm not advocating for change or striving for a better future. I’m simply articulating the perspective that all perceived struggles and quests for meaning are part of the same automatic process that leads us into further confusion. You might want to consider whether this response aligns with your perception of my message or if it merely reinforces your own assumptions about agency and belief.
