We're suspending disbelief quite early with this first one movie :-) In 2009 a planet was discovered 20 million light years away. A message was sent to it. 5 years later there was a response. We are not told what physics defying method was used to send the signal faster than light.

Oh... wow these movies are so... so bad. Disjointed, bad dialogue, bad plot, incoherent plot, continuity errors galore. I mean the second movie straight up retconns the original movies plot. Instead of them coming from 20 million light years away, they were built by humans. They couldn't even get a prequel right. The robots are typical SyFy levels of bad CGI. That all aside they're... fine for a one time watch I guess.
