It's really disgusting how this happened - it's easy to think it must have been thousands of years ago, but it's so much more recent than that - and it should have never happened. Thank you for educating!
How is there no comments yet? Crash Course Black American History is honestly one of my favorites. Its grounded, its real, and honest education. No jokes no making light of things. I very much appreciate that especially as an American. Black History just never got treated this right back in school.
I learned about this in my first year of college. I am still stunned that something like this could happen not just in the United States but anywhere. Thank you for the video.
i currently go to Tuskegee University and i actually heard about this in high school while i lived in jersey. sadly, my high school kind of glossed over it. once i got to tuskegee, i learned a lot about black history that my pwi schools from my past wouldnt teach. im thankful for the HBCU experience.
Finally, I've been waiting for this lol😭 I know a lot of people have said this but this is by far the best crash course content, I for one would know this because I don't even learn this in school but I've still somehow managed to watch all the videos because of interest. The content is so interesting and the host is perfect at explaining. Thanks again
As someone who is not black and who was born and raised in the south with a crap education, thank you for making these. I was born and went to school in Tulsa Oklahoma. Never once in my entire education was the Tulsa Race Riots mentioned. Not one time. I had to learn about that in ARIZONA from my college professors. Just shameful.
This incident has been so well hidden/unacknowledged that when "Falcon and The Winter Soldier" used it in part to tell Isaiah's origin story, people didn't believe every history buff who came out praising the use of historical context in such a way! That's sad to me; one of the ONLY public discussions about this subject (WE NEED MORE!) were had bc of a superhero show.
I had never heard of this study before but wow. It’s horrible how much they went through as not only a family but community. I wish all those who participated well. No one deserves to go through that.
I can’t believe that this was something that happened in the 1970s. It’s insane how this wasn’t that long ago. I can’t believe we don’t learn about the atrocity in school!
I've really enjoyed this series so far and as an Alabamian, I really looked forward to this episode and anticipate the rest of the series. Have a Merry Christmas 🙂.
Thank you for making this video. As a White American who is a Republican, I am appalled, angry, furious, and at a loss for words. After learning about this atrocity, as well as so many others. Many of the issues I see occurring in todays world can easily be linked to atrocities like this. We must never allow this to happen again, our people must be educated in schools about this, and we must take actions to ensure that things like this never occur again. It is my belief as of right now, that the NSA, CIA, FBI, ATF and the organization responsible for this be disbanded, destroyed, and rebuilt with safeguards and oversights in place to ensure that these things do not occur again. Words can not express how sorry I am and feel for everyone affected by this. Even more so that Justice has not been done. Sure I believe they won a lawsuit with the help of the ACLU if I’m not mistaken? For 10 million dollars, but that doesn’t do this justice, nor is it adequate enough to compensate those who were affected by this. There were 600 participants. So if you divide 10,000,000 by 600 you get 16,666.66…. That’s only $16,666.66 for each person affected by that atrocity. That is flat out RIDICULOUS!! More MUST be done!
Also you’ve got a new subscriber. Please also talk about how gun control was founded and rooted in racism to specifically stop black people from being able to own and keep guns. And also go into the Tulsa Oklahoma massacre which specifically destroyed the black wall street of the time, was covered up by our own government, and that was assisted and facilitated by our own National Guard. If you haven’t already covered these, I mean. I’m new here so forgive me if you’ve already addressed these atrocities as well.
I can’t believe I didn’t hear about Tuskegee until I took a Ethics in Medicine course in college (2010). They mentioned Tuskegee early in the semester. I left after 4 weeks, I couldn’t sit through the class. I’m convinced there is No Ethics in Medicine the US. Not in my lifetime. I’m pretty sure if this information was shared more widespread people would question doctors and medicine more often. I hope BLM are sharing this information. You did a good job with this video, thank you.
Thank you Crash Course for taking time to make this video. More content like this is needed in America to help ALL Americans have a better understanding of history as African Americans. We dont't hate the opposite race but there is a large distrust due to events & oppression such as this one. Such patterns are what contributes to a large divide that we continue to see!
Reminds me of recent facts when some white European said " we will test the COVID vaccine in Africa first, no worries". We've come a long way and the trails of the path are still fresh
Maybe it's for the best that this didn't go into detail about the history of gynecology, but as a woman it does feel a bit wrong that this wasn't elaborated on at least a little more. Saying how woman were experimented on and cut into without any form of pain relief at all being the backbone of gynecology today deserves a bit more emphasis, even if just a few more sentences. Still, thank you for going into this even as much as you did.
I am in Alabama, age 76; I have reason to believe that my father was a Study Subject; in 1989 Kaiser Doctors duped me into receiving a spinal tap. And, I want to be paid, I understand that funds have been set aside for me but I don't know how to reach the money; can y'all help me ?
Great recap - thank you so much! I’m wondering if you have information on the 201 that didn’t initially have syphilis? I can only imagine the emotional trauma, but how did it impact them physically?
None of this was ever taught in school. I grew up in schools at Aberdeen Washington and Tonasket Washington. Everyone in my county is racist. I live in hell.
Damar Hamlin. The fix is in. In 1972 there wasn’t the means to cancel schools of thought like there are now. But don’t tell me what happened to this young man “happens all the time.” Will there be another Bill Clinton-Like apology in 20 years?
Sadly even if the enslaved women were free white women, they likely wouldn't have been treated better or granted the luxury of giving consent. Women have been horribly mistreated throughout the history of medicine and continue to be ignored or told our pain is "not a big deal" to this day. Studies on medications and treatment rarely includes women so our bodies are often being made to take wrong medications and dosages due to medical ignorance.
This history needs to be taught and remembered.
This... This is what made me be entrenched in fighting against medical racism. This is not only horrible, but wrong, evil and so much more
Black Epidemiologist here. Thanks for sharing this story. We have a lot more work to do in eliminating health disparities in the black community.
It's really disgusting how this happened - it's easy to think it must have been thousands of years ago, but it's so much more recent than that - and it should have never happened. Thank you for educating!

Such an evil atrocity committed by the US government against its own people. Thank you for giving this the attention it deserves
While it's true that 1972 is shockingly close to a lot of people, I want to impress on young people that the 1800s weren't that long ago either.
This is some evil shit.
I learned about this in my first year of college. I am still stunned that something like this could happen not just in the United States but anywhere. Thank you for the video.

This one is pretty infamous. This is the type of stuff that makes people seriously distrust the government.
Finally, I've been waiting for this lol😭

Thanks again
A shameful chapter on human history and an inerasable stain on medical history
As someone who is not black and who was born and raised in the south with a crap education, thank you for making these. I was born and went to school in Tulsa Oklahoma. Never once in my entire education was the Tulsa Race Riots mentioned. Not one time. I had to learn about that in ARIZONA from my college professors. Just shameful.
Thanks for bringing light to long accepted lies and forgotten truths of this horrific episode in our collective history...
I was just reading about this yesterday. So sad, glad to see it getting covered here too.
I had never heard of this study before but wow. It’s horrible how much they went through as not only a family but community. I wish all those who participated well. No one deserves to go through that.
I had no idea that this happened. I appreciate now knowing
This should be taught in High school at the very least. I only remember this being touched upon when i took psychology in community college
My stomach is just turning/feeling sick. Thank you for speaking what we need to know.
I can’t believe that this was something that happened in the 1970s. It’s insane how this wasn’t that long ago. I can’t believe we don’t learn about the atrocity in school!
So remember kids, the next time you say "Oh the government wouldn't do that!" Oh yes, yes they would.
Thank you for the video and history lesson. It gives me another reason to love this channel.
12:50 I didn't know pharmacy deserts existed but I'm not that surprised
I have a hard time understanding how people as a whole could be so cruel!!!!
We need a movie on this
This crash course is mad depressing but very nesessary
Excellent delivery of this black history in healthcare. I used this in my population health course. Thank you for these clips.
I've really enjoyed this series so far and as an Alabamian, I really looked forward to this episode and anticipate the rest of the series. Have a Merry Christmas 🙂.
this and all the atrocities white Americans committed not being taught in schools should be a crime. thank you for posting this
Such an incredible and informative video. What I love about it is that many of the pictures shown are in color, rather than black and white.
Thank you for making this video. As a White American who is a Republican, I am appalled, angry, furious, and at a loss for words. After learning about this atrocity, as well as so many others. Many of the issues I see occurring in todays world can easily be linked to atrocities like this.

Man, I’m so happy that the US government is virtuous now, and would never team up with big pharma to harm people ever again.
what a contrast between the intro sequence and the subject of the video 💀
Teach this during black history month
Reminds me of recent facts when some white European said " we will test the COVID vaccine in Africa first, no worries". We've come a long way and the trails of the path are still fresh
As always no justice for wrongdoing on the government’s behalf.
This should be in schools
These videos are amazing!

Informative video
How could a black person ever trust the government or pharmaceutical industry again?
this study broke my heart
This is a great series, but some parts are hard to watch without getting pissed off
If it wasn't for the book don't cry for me I wouldnt know this even happened
I am in Alabama, age 76; I have reason to believe that my father was a Study Subject; in 1989 Kaiser Doctors duped me into receiving a spinal tap. And, I want to be paid, I understand that funds have been set aside for me but I don't know how to reach the money; can y'all help me ?
wow, that is soooooo important, thank you for sharing!!
💔💔💔😥 just hearing black ppl being treated so badly, broke my heart. No one deserves to be scapecoated like that
Why haven't there been a law sue against the U.S. government
The evil is overwhelming
I hope they all burn in hell for doing that to these poor people.
Great recap - thank you so much!
I’m wondering if you have information on the 201 that didn’t initially have syphilis? I can only imagine the emotional trauma, but how did it impact them physically?
As a white, southern woman who is engaged to a absolutely wonderful black man. Why wasn’t this taught in school?
I truly appreciate this content.
It's really disappointing and at the same time reencouraging to think that these things had to happen for the current standards of bioethics to exist.
Heavy video to drop on Christmas Eve.
Omg not an episode on my town!!
None of this was ever taught in school. I grew up in schools at Aberdeen Washington and Tonasket Washington. Everyone in my county is racist. I live in hell.
Thanks 🙏 😢

I geuss thatt bug pharma was ALWAYS corrupt!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
🖤
Wow
America’s shame. 😔
The history of medical experimentation is so fucked up.
Sometimes I think the devil is actually white
This is happening now, they're doing it to everyone. This was just the beginning.

Subconscious conscious supreme magnetic infinite.
Soo evil.
Don't forget to get your free booster shots!
I’m here cause of half baked
