Perhaps looking to plead 'guilty' to a lesser charge eventually? Hoping to strike a plea deal with the prosecutors? Doesn't consider himself 'guilty' and is hoping to provide reasons which will lead to his being acquitted? So many possibilities . . .
I believe we are dealing with an attorney who sees a high profile case where he can make a name for himself, and he has jumped in without permission. Watch the video again and listen carefully to what the judge and the Commonwealth lawyer are saying.
I don't think it's about making a name, but some prior collusion that may be unearthed. Public Defender's office is usually swamped and won't go out of their way for anyone, it's a load more work they are intentionally not budgeted for.
It's highly unusual for the DPA to get involved without an appointment from the court, but as an attorney myself, for a Class A felony charge I would charge at a MINIMUM $50,000. What they do, my sister's a bailiff, is STRONGLY discourage ambulance chasing shysters who follow big cases around and force their way in for publicity. Which really sounds like what is going on here.
The "Sheriff" arranged a back door deal to try and make the State pay for his defense. Who shows up in Court with a Public Defender that was never assigned to the case? Fishy as heck. That "lawyer" needs to get the boot and be investigated. Sadly, he will probably get the case and be rewarded (paid) by the taxpayers.

He's a sheriff and being represented by a public defender is crazy and why is he not handcuffed when anyone else in a capital case would be cuffed and surrounded by officers
No doubt he'll be characterised as an 'upright citizen', a 'pillar of his local community', a 'stalwart member of the local church', a 'real family man' etc., etc. and, therefore not a danger to the public and might even be let out until the trial begins. You would think when you're guilty of such a serious crime - with the possibility of the death penalty - you'd WANT the best lawyer you can get (which isn't usually a public defender). I mean, it's not likely he'll ever get out (even if he isn't executed), to enjoy spending money on other things. Maybe the guy is just tired of life. Maybe he's ready to face death or life in prison, and wants his family to keep the money instead.
This is not a case for the Public Defender. It is a wild misuse of Commonwealth funds in an office that is already stretched far too thin. Also, his family isn't prepared for this?!? He's in the process of losing his job???? No, really
Two local rumors. 1) The judge was having an inappropriate relationship with the sheriffs underaged daughter 2) The sheriff was looking for the judge to cover for one of his deputies and the judge refused. Take your pick as to which is true, that's if either on is.
Pleas of "not guilty" are routine, whatever the evidence. If he pleads "guilty" to everything in the charge, then he has no room for a plea bargain which could reduce the sentence.
