    I have not seen or heard about this movie for 35 years.
    For some reason I kept remembering a couple of scenes from this movie, but I didn't really think about this movie apart from them since I saw it in theatres. Seeing this video after some 35 years is really surreal. I also remember the Challenger and it came on really early in the morning, just before school, live on almost all the channels (we were at home when it launched, being Pacific time and there were only about 11 channels anyway) and our teachers had to talk about it, because that is all the students talked about. We were really obsessed, especially since it was promoted a lot leading up to the launch and one of the astronauts was originally a teacher. There was a lot of stuff about her training, and it was clear she was chosen because she had that kind, charming, charisma that some teachers have. Also, her being a civilian originally made it seem that space could be in reach of anybody... so the movie just added to that feeling.
    The scene I really remember is when the kid is doing the spacewalk and sees the infinity of space. I don't know why, but it was so frightening to me, and really scared me in the theatres (weird what affects you as a kid). To this day,, the thought of a spacewalk is really scary to me, and floating into that black nothingness is horrifying The space scenes do seem fake now, but in the theatre, at that time, they didn't Theatres have a way to immerse you, that maybe a television screen doesn't. The other scene I remember is when Lea Thompson's character is trying to pilot that spinning gyro thing. It was weird, because I always wanted to "pilot" one, but never could find one that you pilot, just one you hang onto.
    It seems goofy to me now, but as a kid, at that time period, the possibilities seemed.... bigger somehow. It is hard to explain, and of course the F/X are shoddy compared to what so many other movies can do and since, but movies and tv were more like Kabuki theatre at the time... you ignored the sets and cheap F/X and let your mind get absorbed into the story. Or like a puppet show... there is a point where you just stop thinking about the hand moving the puppet.

      I'm just happy you got to relive some of your memories from 35 years ago! I hope it was an enjoyable experience. I liked the movie quite a bit for all its goofiness. Space Camp always seemed like the coolest thing when I was a kid, I probably would have really liked this movie if I saw it back in the 80s.

    • @alen7480
      @alen7480 2 роки тому

      @@WhatWereYouWatching Yeah, a lot of movies were great as kids, and somehow immersive, despite the shoddy F/X. Nice to see you review it, and the jokes are funny. Keep it up.
      The Challenger disaster was really a tragedy. But I do remember that not just before, but after they kept talking about all the hope it would bring in our knowledge. I feel that wonder is sometimes lost. Even the Soviet Union was into the whole space as peace and scientific world of togetherness kind of thing. Especially since the MIR space station was built by them (MIR meaning peace in Russian). Kind of tragic that Russia has become worse than the Soviet Union was at the time (even in the 80s, after Gorbachev the Soviet Union's building bridges seemed to offer a path forward). Although people remember the Cold War, the 80s seemed to offer hope in ending it, and, in hindsight, they were right when the Soviet Union finally collapsed in the early 90s. It was a weirdly optimistic time then. The fall of the Berlin Wall was amazing thing to live through at that time and Russia letting all the independent states go was amazing. Even the US human rights record (which wasn't good) was constantly being exposed, which ironically made it seem that things would change for the better.
      Sorry for going on, but it is hard to convey how this movie, and movies like this, made us feel.

    George Herbert Walker Bush being VP, the countless children (including myself) watching the Challenger disaster unfold in real time, the mandatory counseling and evaluations afterword, was no accident.
    Finding out decades later that they weren’t even astronauts and it was all a psyop… well it makes sense now.
    The CIA and NASA traumatized a generation of kids so they could study the effects of trauma based programming. There were teams of psychologists and counselors arrived at schools no more than 2 hours after the disaster, we had to have an initial interview with psychologists before our parents could pick us up.
    Most kids didn’t even understand the concept of death, and here these people were reinforcing the notion that those astronauts were heroes because they died, and that dying for your country is one of the best things we could aspire to. It was death programming, among other things…
