Why Was This B-rated Sci-fi Movie a BOX OFFICE BUST? | My Science Project (1985) | Movie Review

- In this video I review the 1985 sci-fi movie MY SCIENCE PROJECT. It did not perform well at the box office. What could have made it better? Did Fisher Stevens need all those lines? Was Dennis Hopper a cool guy on set? I bet he was.

There are a number of movies from the 80's like this one that failed to hit it big at the box office but when video rentals and cable TV came out many became fan favorites like this one.
Personally I saw it when it was released at the theater and loved it and still do today.
Absolutely. Definitely should have done better, it's a fun one.
I know this is 4 years out, but I do want to say this video was well done. You can tell alot of time, care and effort was put into it, and thats very much appreciated.
For the film itself. I loved it as a kid and still do, even and esp for its campiness. It felt like it knew what it was and embraced it. It's highly underrated and deserve way more love then it gets.
Loved this movie as a kid in the 80s, I still laugh at the old man at the police station who laughs hysterically
Been waiting for this episode for a while. My Science Project was one of those movies I loved as a kid, and hated as an adult. Great review as always!
PS - the fact that he always refers to it as a "Gizmo" drove me nuts.
Thanks! I'm glad I rewatched it. I wish there was more Dennis Hopper in it but what can ya do.
This was one of those 80's movies with a scope that didn't match its budget. However, the final result was flawed but fun. Imagination radiates from the script in the insane way that the 80's were known for. I love the ending scene where all the timelines, past and future, converge in the school. John Stockwell was a capable, leading man and was hot with the young, female generation. I also enjoyed the fact that they were all a group of outsiders, which I don't think was touched on here. The nerds, the obnoxious kid, and Mike, the loner who used cars as an excuse to not build relationships with people, including his own father. There were no easy fixes with people, just always problems. Mike says as much when he asks Ellie why they spent 4 years in the same class and never got to know each other well. The events of the film show Mike that he does need people sometimes and that that was okay to admit. The car and rep as a motorhead (his crutch) didn't matter much anymore.
The short answer is, that My science project was completely overshadowed by Back to the future
That's what they say! I guess for good reason, as BTTF rocks. But MSP is cool in its own way. Thanks for watching :)
@@WhatWereYouWatching I was just stating the facts of the situation, personally I will rewatch MSP more often than BTTF.
It is a good movie, it just got lost in the shuffle of all the teen science movies at the time. Plus any movie with the song Warrior by Scandal is an automatic must watch
My single favorite Camp 80's movie. I could probably watch this and The Wraith on continuous loop.
The Wraith was so awesomely weird.
This movie is proof that your parents had HBO back in the 1980s. Twice a day for about three years...swear to God. 😂
somebody cut me off on interstate 81 last week here in PA, i gave him the finger in the rear view and said aloud "sit on this butt plug." i still quote this movie now. this movie is cult classic
They should have had Mike reappear in a slightly-off doppelgänger reality after unplugging the device… like cooper in twin peaks lol
I guess we now know why he turned into a yuppie, government employed, computer hacker known as The Plague!
Hahahah seriously. Gah now I wanna watch Hackers.
What Were You Watching? I remember seeing it at the theater when I was a teenager. It’s a classic.
The future mutant scene is so clear and well colour balanced. Was this footagw from the bluray? My DVD is very fuzzy.
Thank you for blessing us with a new video!
Hahah I hope I can bless you more frequently in the future. Thanks for watching.
Was that oxygen Dennis Hopper was taking a hit off of?
Whatever it is I want a hit.
Awesome video. I loved this movie.
Thanks a ton Jason :)
Another gem. Quite the horror film cast too -- Stockwell from Christine, Fisher Stevens from The Burning. Add in Dennis Hopper chewing scenery like his name was Bill Shatner, and well, you got a crappy movie. :p
I've never heard of The Burning until now. And I checked and it seems you did a video on it and I'm not sure I've watched it so that's now on my To-Do list for today :)
@@WhatWereYouWatching The Burning is pretty much a slasher classic. Has Fisher Stevens, Jason Alexander with hair...Holly Hunter.
It was one of my early videos -- so not many people watched it. :p
This brought back memories of watchung this when I was a kid;) It was never at the top of my list, but it was enjoyable, and I would always watch it when it was on... which was ALL THE TIME!! Great video again!! Weren't you gonna do Willow...
Thanks a bunch :) I have about five movies I'm going to try to do by the end of the year and Willow is one of them. But first I have to talk about Ferris Bueller's attempt at a TV show. It's time has come.
@@WhatWereYouWatching I remember that show... I used to always get it confused with the show Parker Lewis Can't Loose!!
Set in 1985, with John stockwell and the early Dennis Hopper Character from Blue Velvet and Apocalypse Now, this movie looks amazing. Oh and Fisher Stevens, the 80s never had enough Fisher Stevens.
Remember him in Short Circuit? So goofy and fun. Thanks for watching.
How about not taking every movie so seriously. These movies weren't made to win Oscars, change the world, or even make sense. Just have fun instead of whining. 👎🏽👎🏽
Weird Science is top tier!
It's hard to believe Iron Man was in that movie. Such a weird one.
Why is the dialogue drenched in reverb at 4:13-4:42 lol
I KNOW. I originally was gonna bring up the shitty ADR reverb but wound up cutting it out but wasn't sure if it was too nitpicky. Did they re-record the dialogue in a canyon of sorts? John Stockwell's voice also doesn't carry very well and I feel like a lot of his lines had to be dubbed because of it.
I have zero memory of this movie, but I’m sure I saw it, but no, but yet...no.
Haha it's worth a watch if you're bored.
