After the finale, I had to come back to this episode and surround myself with the empowerment and validation of the Asian American women in this community. I’m not a big bachelor/bachelorette watcher, but throughout the season I was so inspired that Jenn always spoke her mind and showed that she was so witty, strong, communicative, and independent on top of being this beautiful and loving person. She made me, also an Asian American woman, so proud and uplifted with this representation! But the finale, and every instance of men referencing their expectations for a different bachelorette, hit me so hard. The moments of (stereotypically attractive white) men wanting white women, lying to and manipulating the emotions of an Asian American woman for their own gain, their defensiveness and shamelessness in the face of so much hurt… and for the media production to exploit it all. In some ways, this kind of representation felt appropriate and soberingly honest. But it still hurts. Right when we think we’ll be uplifted and recognized as worthy of love and a place at the table… sending Jenn a big thank you and best wishes
