This is absolutely amazing. I’ve got a pair of RDCs and a quartet of F40s that are all destined for VIA Rail paint after the stock paint is removed. I’ve always been leery of attempting to strip Kato, and usually just give a quick bath in alcohol to remove the lettering, and just paint over the stock basecoat. But watching this is incredible. Thank you for passing this on!

Paasche air eraser, 400grit aluminum oxide powder, cheap walmart 3 gallon air compressor and run it at 60psi. 20 minutes max you can have an entire Kato shell stripped, if 20 minutes. Plus you won’t have to wait a few days while it is soaking. You can literally disassemble, air erase, wash and dry.

Well I tried testors and acetone after a night in alcohol but now I’m going back to alcohol and grabbing my dermal and going back to alcohol thanks. Almost melted the shell on my kato F units. In acetone.

I know this a few years old but I just found your channel and thought I'd comment. I use denatured alcohol for stripping paint. It works even better than isopropyl and I haven't found it to be a problem with the plastic even after soaking several days.

This is exactly the information I've been searching for for years now, I like to get Kato models when possible for my prototype because they're the best runners out there.
If you've got a good technique for removing Kato lettering/numbering without damaging the paint underneath (I have some patch-out projects in the to-do queue), I'm yet to find a solid demonstration online of such a technique.

91% alcohol is good stuff but way to pricey, Lacquer thinner will remove it and large quantities are super cheap. Lacquers > Enamels > Acrylics and so on, if you use the appropriate thinner or higher the paint comes off easily. Super clean works really good but there are rumors it makes some plastics brittle though I have never witnessed it and used it for years. Brake fluid is a great alternative but can warp and melt some of the cheaper plastics. Always test in a hidden area to see any reactions.
