Why do these new generations need to be so big? Harder to park and garage. If you want bigger, get a Sequoia. If you want more luxury, buy a 4runner limited. If you want fuel economy, buy a Highlander. Toyota just alienated a HUGE loyal customer base who persued reliability. The 5th gen just needed freshened a little and not ruined.
@theczar6171 Absolutely. They were eliminated due to government classification in relation to the resulting CAFE regulations. Different criteria for 4 door trucks. Gee, the government messed that up as well.
Then they completely ruined the Land Cruiser. It used to be a great Luxury SUV, that was nicer than the 4Runner limited. Now it’s basically just a slightly nicer 4Runner for a way worse value.
Glad I purchased a new 2nd generation 2021 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro employing that bulletproof naturally aspirated 3UR-FE 5.7 liter V-8 engine and reliable 6 speed Aisan transmission. A quality built tank
I have always gotten 20 mpg in my 2011 4 Runner. It has 250,000 miles on it. Keeping it. I just cannot bring myself to pay $80,000 for any vehicle. I like having zero car payments for over 10 years! I'm going for a Toyota record for my 4 runner. I have babied it and always maintained it!
5th gen 4runners are some of the best vehicles made for people that actually keep cars for a long time. None of this matters for people that trade in every 2 years.
My experience might not be directly germane, but I, too, was an NA guy until I bought my F-150 with the 2.7 ecoboost. It's now 9 years-old and has 95,000 miles. So far, no issues and the low-end torque in the real world is genuinely impressive. I'm a turbo convert -- at least until one goes boom.
I don’t want a turbo at all. Until they come with real lifetime warrenties, I don’t want a hybrid either. And do we even need to talk about CVT’s? (Which all hybrids come with).
NA all day. I could have got the 24 Tacoma, but chose a loaded 23 off road instead. I paid $44k for my truck. I’m bearly in an sr5 for that price in a 24.
I had a V-8 forerunner, and now the Land Cruiser, first edition the hybrid engine is absolutely amazing. The low end torque is fantastic. We will see how they hold up overtime. They are over priced though. I got 5K off. You got to get a discount.
Blame CAFE standards. Thank USA environmentalist. Toyota has always said NA engines are always more reliable, bigger motors doing less work last longer. But to sell cars in the USA all auto manufacturers must meet CAFE standards
I test drove the Land Crusier today - NO THANK YOU! The engine is woefully underpowered for this large vehicle. I cannot believe this thing is rated at 326 hp. Dealer lots around the country will soon be overflowing with these.
I honestly feel too much emphasis is put on how much power these suvs have, there are things to think about depending on your use but your not buying a race car
Great comparison...like the styling of the new Toyota LC but the engine / powertrain is a missed opportunity IMO. Toyota should have offered both the turbo 4cyl and the turbo 6cyl...at different price points to give the consumer a choice. This is something that GM does well...gives you the ability to configure your vehicle how you want it...with Toyota it always seems like you have to compromise some things you want to get the other things you want...
Toyota has 3 distinct hybrids: the Prius (type) version (Gen 5) ECVT - non turbo/electric motor, Tacoma (type) version - turbo/electric motor (new Gen) 8 auto, and the Lexus RX 500 (type) - turbo/electric 6 auto. The Tacoma type hybrid was designed for power and not for fuel economy, while the Prius is made primarily for MPG. Prius especially with Gen 4-5 have high reliability (ECVT is rock solid), the Tacoma hybrid is new of course and time will tell. So Tacoma type hybrid is not designed for MPG and the reliability is an unknown factor but just adding a turbo to a hybrid has added additional complexity that will probably work itself out in the long run, I think...
my 2014 SR5, 178,000 miles, still runs like very well. I had thought to 'upgrade' to a new LC and pass my truck down to my son when he goes off to college next yr...but now im starting to wonder about the LC250. My fall back is an LC200 or a TRDP 4Runner (2020-2024 model)...for the money, that might be where im headed. Certainly not getting a 1958...LC200 & TRDP have much more in them for the $.
New one easily, im not afraid of turbos lmao. My hilux back from home has a 4 banger turbo and thats on 300k kms on stock no problems. Warm your car up before using it and put a turbo timer on it so it can idle for a few mins before shutting off. Turbo problems stems from shutting the engine off immediately. That new LC prado is meh though.
The 4 banger engine is fine if all you are planning is to lease it and keep it for 2 years.. If I was going to purchase a 4 runner I would get the last year 2024 with the 4.0.
Plastic bumpers have nothing to do with rust, it's the chassis that has the corrosion issues. The 4R isn't any less plasticy than the LC, the plastic bits are just painted.
The new Cruiser has 35% better mpg with more torque at much lower RPM range compared to the 4Runner you tested. I have the 4L V6 which is fantastic for its time but the new 2.4L turbo and 2.4L turbo w/ hybrid power boost are both superior to the old V6 for offroading, daily driving, etc. Even the reliability of the architecture has been solid (Lexus NX history). Sound and engine bay aesthetics are in favor of the V6 - maybe.
4 banger turbo will have more HP/Torque likely similar mpg as the V6 but will it last 200,000 miles with normal maintenance like the v6 4runner is legendary for? Based upon the issues with the new Tundra & Tacoma, I'd say no. Don't worry many (fools and their money) are willing to shell out sticker plus a bump to be the 1st poser on the block to own one.
I'd rather complain about the lack of power for 200k trouble free miles than complain about the latest excuse for another problem with that piece of junk 8-speed transmission Toyota has been trying to make work right for over 7 years. I lost trust in Toyota products after my 2020 Camry. It was the first Toyota product I really hated. It got worse with all the excuses for all its problems.
Toyota is really screwing up with the turbo charged lawn mower engines and electric / hybrid junk nobody wants. They should have upgraded the V-6 with a turbo or supercharger, but NOPE they wanted 2 or 3 miles better MPG. smdh
The real comparison is the 4Runner with a Magnusson Supercharger. Hands down the winner. I don't have the money for it so I just did the ShiftPower gas pedal plug and app, my 4Runner is way better now on acceleration. Depending on what percentage setting you put the app at you can get all the "torque" feeling you want for less than $200.
4 cylinder turbo engine is not meant to last! Sadly the days are long gone when a motor would last 300,000, miles, 4 cylinder turbo lifespan is 100000 miles, they don’t want them to last any longer, because you will have to buy another one!
My opinion, the 22 RE and later the 24r cylinder motors once they got into that 90,000+ mileage on a lot of them timing chains were a problem. The V6 had head gasket issues.. today’s Toyota the engines are letting go in the pick up trucks. Also, the initial start of the turbo motors. They had waste gate failures and some even had turbo go out.. we haven’t even seen any of the new motors in high mileage yet.
A lot of the economy issues are with driving style. We get 21-22 on our new LC on a regular basis. Drive a mix of interstate and city streets, it's just how you drive it.
For all the talk about buying the last gen 4Runner before the new one comes out the truth is Toyota sold less4Runners last year than they have since 2014. People were waiting. The new 4Runner got bigger and the engines got smaller. Why? Because people want bigger vehicles and most don't care one bit about the engine as long as it feels good enough to them when they test drive it. Toyota folks or those who hear about the brand blindly assume reliability is baked in so what does it matter that everything changed and these have been significant early issues? After all, it's a Toyota, they say. They'll get it figured out. Not if they can sweep it under the rug they won't but, hey. Buy what you want. Manufacturers build what people are actually buying not what a few guys on the internet say they will buy but never do. And before you blame manufacturers for small turbo engines start writing your congressmen and women about emissions regulations. Americans like numbers. Whether those numbers make a difference or not is irrelevant. Whether they will ever make use of those numbers is also irrelevant. So we get big power numbers with little increase in fuel economy. We just don't get a decrease in economy. Americans (I am one, so don't pretend I'm a foreign troll) want things to be bigger and have more features no matter what they say and we know this because they buy the bigger and more full featured cars and trucks even if it hurts them financially. They complain about the cost and they say things like, if they would build one with fewer gizmos and gadgets and sell it for less I'd buy one. No, they wouldn't. Almost all manufacturers base models of whatever vehicle, which have every feature most people ever actually use, are the worst sellers in the lineup. You vote with your wallet and make noise with your mouth. Will the new Tacoma's and 4Runners ultimately prove to be as reliable as the old ones? Who knows. The idea that lightly stressed engines last longer than heavily stressed ones is not a cut and dried issue. Heavily stressed engines usually require more maintenance and we hate to do any maintenance so that may prove to be the downfall. But when they are maintained they last just as long as any other modern engine. Yes, yes, I know about all the old 140 horsepower inline 6 tractor engines that everyone from Ford to Jeep to Toyota used to use that never died but no one would buy a car with one of those in it today even if they were emissions compliant. We talk sh*t and buy anyway and we talk sh*t but vote for the same people who helped put over reaching policies in place so there's no incentive for manufacturers or government officials to change their policies or what they produce.
I have no doubt eventually they work out the gremlins out of the new engine but the problem is a turbo engine drives differently than a naturally aspirated engine and I just don’t like them. The fact you get all the power upfront and the throws your head in the back of the seat every time with the delay in the pedal it’s just a pain in the fucking ass. I hate it. The natural power curve especially on a V8 is just unmatched. There is nothing better than taking a road trip with a vehicle that has a V-8 engine.
A lot of us may complain but this is new reality when it comes to vehicles. It’s the fault of our all knowing government and tree huggers. We’re going to have to get over it sooner or later. If you can do keep your naturally aspirated vehicles as long as you can.
Cracks me up all the complaining. No..too much plastic (Have you not sat in any toyota?) Oh no, 4 banger with turbo... 4 bangers and turbos are not new.... oh no 60k for an SUV.... look around.... everything is crazy expensive now.... oh no... a hybrid....well, Toyota invented the hybrid..... The sky is falling!!!! Ill just keep my 2024 4runner... good idea, but stop complaining about stupid stuff you dont understand...
Want power¿ Buy power! Fooling around with weak, supposedly fuel efficient engines is a practice in disappointment. My 2023 Toyota tacoma-3.5 gets in to the high teens for typical milage. My 2003 Dodge dually with a 5.9 diesel, get 21mpg if I keep the RPM's below 1900. = less than 60mph. Which is A 10,000+ pound truck.
It's not rocket science. The six cylinder aspirated engine will last much longer than the 4-cylinder turbo. The turbo engines will work harder to push the same car
IforceMax is worse. Its jerky, janky, thud to life on stop and go, its just not smooth on stop and go but on highway its smooth. I rather get non bybrid 4. Most of reviewer only talk positive for obvious reasons, suck it up to car makers
2016 trail with 100k runs like the day I bought it. Zero issues. I cannot believe Toyota is going to destroy this legend SUV with turbo garbage that nobody wants then charge 50-70k for it. Just sad.
"Muh real land cruiser muh real land cruiser muh real land cruiser muh muh muh" - 200 series Station wagon owners in denial that 70s and prados are also land cruisers
@@BenHardyCars The same team that builds the 200 and 300 Series also builds the Prado, using the same materials, facilities, and manufacturing standards. While the Prado is designed as a light-duty platform, it maintains the exact same level of quality. You’re comparing two tools designed for different purposes. The 200 Series is built as a station wagon, so its parts are thicker and more robust. The light-duty Land Cruiser is intentionally designed to be lighter and more agile. It’s not about being 'less well-built'; it’s about fulfilling its specific role while maintaining the same craftsmanship and quality inherent to the Land Cruiser name. Can tell right away how cheap Toyota got with the manual prop hood on the Land Cruiser (and I work/worked for Toyota for the last 13 years). Go a little lower out front and check out all that cheap plastic they put on the grill and bumper...just trash. Glad I got my '24 TRD PRO Runner 6 months ago...last of the dinosaurs and great Toyotas. As far as the interior goes, the Land Cruiser like the new Tacoma is lots of cheap plastics when you throw in the fact that they are anywhere from $5K-$10K more trim level to trim level across the board. You even mentioned that this Land Cruiser is more expensive than the Runner you're driving....for that you get cloth non-power seats and no sunroof lol. Not to mention the garbage they put under the hood.
Toyota wasted millions with lobbyists opposing EV. Now that is coming back to bite. Turbos are ALWAYS higher maintenance then non turbos. Plus a small turbo works harder with a heavy truck or SUV, and a turbo under load returns worse gas mileage than a v6 or even v8 not being stressed. On paper turbos sound great, but in use I'll take the old v8. Better yet, have you seen the Rivian? ICE is Dodo.
As an owner of a very reliable 1GR V6, I'm very much ok with a turbo 4 replacing it. It'll go down as one of the great engines in Toyotas portfolio. The new V6 will be one of the worst.

Personally, I miss the standard cab small version pick up trucks.
@theczar6171 Absolutely. They were eliminated due to government classification in relation to the resulting CAFE regulations. Different criteria for 4 door trucks. Gee, the government messed that up as well.
I agree, bigger is not always better.
Ohh yeah alienated their customers looking for reliability.
Then they completely ruined the Land Cruiser. It used to be a great Luxury SUV, that was nicer than the 4Runner limited. Now it’s basically just a slightly nicer 4Runner for a way worse value.
V6 all the way! That turbo will wear out faster and then the stupid hybrid battery to replace later on is a huge cost.
Should have kept the 4.0 and tried to increase efficiency.
I sat in a new land cruiser and I thought that the interior felt cheap compared to my 5th gen limited 4 runner.
and for a stock stereo the JBL is one of the better OEM's Ive heard.
Last year I bought a 2023 TRD ORP w/KDSS/ Love it.
Really interested to watch you to compare side by side New vs Old 4runners when its available.
Saw a 1958 IRL - it looks SO CHEAP/shabby with all the plastic in the front
V6 still the better engine - almost same MPG, waaay more reliable…
Checked out the new LC. Cheap plastic plus de-content clearly was the Toyota game plan. Hard pass for 70k
Terrible trunk space with hybrid battery location.
is that 4runner for sale? the silver 24?
Great comparison...like the styling of the new Toyota LC but the engine / powertrain is a missed opportunity IMO. Toyota should have offered both the turbo 4cyl and the turbo 6cyl...at different price points to give the consumer a choice. This is something that GM does well...gives you the ability to configure your vehicle how you want it...with Toyota it always seems like you have to compromise some things you want to get the other things you want...
Agreed. The power issue can be resolved with a good ECU tune as the 1GR is severely underpowered.
Bro I'm growing out my hair because you inspired me. Been watching since you were clean cut.
To me, the most important factors are still unknown, how will durability and longevity play out in the Land Cruiser.
I would put money on them not being as reliable as the 5th gen 4Runner
2020 Army Green. It’s my go bag.
my 2014 SR5, 178,000 miles, still runs like very well.
Im keeping my 40th anniversary 4runner for life!
I paid off my 2019 4Runner TRD OR in 11 months. That vehicle ain’t goin nowhere.
$60k for cloth seats is unreal to me. Modern Toyotas are such a bad value for what they offer
Looks like I will be holding on to my Land Cruiser 150 with its 4.0 V6 rather than spend more money for the new LC 250 with a 4-Cylinder turbo.
That's the diesels not these gas engines..
The 4 banger engine is fine if all you are planning is to lease it and keep it for 2 years.. If I was going to purchase a 4 runner I would get the last year 2024 with the 4.0.
Do an overland torque tune on the v6 and call it a day, way more notable usable torque for daily driving..
Pricing is just out of whack with these newer Toyotas.
NO TURBOS for me makes the engine run too Hot.
Oddly only the rare Geezer like myself mentions the preference for rwd cruising, vs awd feeling... G5-T4R-ORP .. winter drifter...😊
Hard no to turbo!
I think that 4Runner was a Avis rental as I know the bar code on the windshield.
A lot of the economy issues are with driving style. We get 21-22 on our new LC on a regular basis. Drive a mix of interstate and city streets, it's just how you drive it.
I was getting better until it got cold
5th Gen 20yrs+ , new generations Maybe 10yrs
I’ve heard nothing but issues from the new turbo hybrid 4 cylinder
My wifes a dealer, zero issues w the 4 cy
Going with a large, low-stressed NA engine is ALWAYS better than a small, high-stressed turbo engine. And, btw, the new LC is a fat, bloated barge.
They save a good bit on paint sticking those shitty black plastic pieces on it, I imagine.
Longevity and cost of repair are the issues.
Nice job 👍
Toyota never ruined anything its about weight plus the emissions restrictions that vehicles have
Had a 2013 Tacoma, had 200k on it when I sold it.
One thing that people forget to mention is that out on the open hwy the 4.0 is a dog. Turbo motors do better at hwy speeds.
Want power¿
Buy power!
I want a 4Runner w/the V8 again. The V6 /5speed was too anemic for our needs. Sorry Toyota.
2016 trail with 100k runs like the day I bought it. Zero issues. I cannot believe Toyota is going to destroy this legend SUV with turbo garbage that nobody wants then charge 50-70k for it. Just sad.
This guy is sooo wrong in his opinion. 😂 I’ll keep my 5th gen.
I rather buy 2 runners for the price of a land cruiser and it will last 5x longer
"Muh real land cruiser muh real land cruiser muh real land cruiser muh muh muh" - 200 series Station wagon owners in denial that 70s and prados are also land cruisers
70 series is cool, but prados aren’t as well built.
@@BenHardyCars
The same team that builds the 200 and 300 Series also builds the Prado, using the same materials, facilities, and manufacturing standards. The 70 series has even THICKER parts does that mean the 200 isn't as well built? NO. They all serve different roles in the Land Cruiser family.
@@noctilucent7396it’s cheaper for a reason, it’s not as well built. Take a look at the size and strength of different parts and you’ll understand.
@@BenHardyCars Bro, one’s a Station Wagon Land Cruiser, and the other’s a Light Duty Land Cruiser. Why is that so hard to grasp? Of course, the Station Wagon will have bigger parts. By that logic, the 70 Series has even bigger parts than the 200 does that make the 200 less well-built? No. You 200 guys need to drop this 'real Land Cruiser' nonsense. It's idiotic and makes you look bad and uneducated on Land Cruisers.
that 4 cyl looks like a complete mess under the hood
They can keep it
Avoiding the turbocharged engine with any costs. 4 l engines are always better and lasts longer and more reliable.
Land Cruiser got a turbo Prius hybrid engine😂
Say it with me "Video"... lol
same mileage and worse , this scenario turbo engine are rejected
Stupid question. 😂Anything with a turbo is not as reliable as a naturally aspirated engine. Ask the guy whos been a mechanic for 57 years.
The 4R is full of plastic all over, including the front. What are you talking about? The 4R is just painted plastic.
The 0-60 times are the same lol
Toyota wasted millions with lobbyists opposing EV. Now that is coming back to bite. Turbos are ALWAYS higher maintenance then non turbos. Plus a small turbo works harder with a heavy truck or SUV, and a turbo under load returns worse gas mileage than a v6 or even v8 not being stressed. On paper turbos sound great, but in use I'll take the old v8. Better yet, have you seen the Rivian? ICE is Dodo.
250 miles per tank!? That's as bad as an electric vehicle! Toyota has lost its' mind...
The new turdbos suck. And more problems overall than I can list. And if you’re going hybrid it’s thousands extra for 1 more mpg.
As an owner of a very reliable 1GR V6, I'm very much ok with a turbo 4 replacing it. It'll go down as one of the great engines in Toyotas portfolio. The new V6 will be one of the worst.
Their V6’s are the fruitiest of them all. Yoters have some of the greatest V8s + Diesels. Wait for the next gens & don’t buy Toyota rn. i4-i6’s are coming
It will ultimately kill the brand!
