I was hoping for more. I wanted to see how to clear the cyclone under the mesh. Here is what I did - A can of condensed air did a marvelous job of cleaning all of the fine, accumulated dust under the mesh. Remove the filter first! Works wonders. This is not addressed in this video, nothing in Dyson manuals.

I am thrilled!!! A few years ago, after 10+ years, my first Dyson Animal wore out. Not satisfied with other vacuums I bought to replace my original Dyson Animal, I was fortunate to purchase a Dyson DC65. After 3 months, I cleaned the filters with ease but I wanted to take the bin off to clean. I was so excited about how easy it is to remove the bin. I love to vacuum and this vacuum is so easy to use. Thank you, Dyson for enhancing my vacuuming experience.
Everyone thank you for watching Michael channel , unfortunately my wonderful husband passed away on November 3rd and he won’t be able to answer any questions but please remember him and thank you so much for watching and subscribing
Awesome video there Michael! Vacuumed up some flour and it made a mess inside the clear canister this morning. Your video solved my problem of how to open it up! Thanks so much!
Dear M. You have put together a very correct and informative video. I have watched it and will now service my Dyson Dual Cyclone. My house keeper reported that it was not working at all so who knows what "they" have done to it! However: I expect it to be the blockages information etc that you have imparted! Very Eeemportant! Thank you so much! Rob of Halmore, Gloucestershire, England.
I have used this Dyson Ball long enough to know that I will never own any other brand vacuum!! I love this thing. The house seems so much cleaner and dust free since I’ve started using it. Even the Kirby I had years ago can’t compare to this one.
This is the first video I found on cleaning my Dyson today, and the only one I needed. Perfect. Informative and entertaining. Glad I found your videos and your wife's too. Happy to subscribe to these excellent and humorous gems. Sorry about the kitchen towel getting so dirty! I made sure to have a sacrificial cleaning cloth and a brush handy. Dyson's cryptic diagrams are not enough, but you made everything clear to me. Thanks!!
Thank you for the video! I just cleaned my Dyson and discovered about 4 dryer sheets clogging the filter. I hate to think how long they have been there. Setting a reminder on my calendar to clean every quarter.
I put my cyclone in the shower monthly. I use the high pressure shower head and fill it up with hot water, give it a shake, and this god awful black gunk comes out. I’ve been doing this for 4 years. My Dyson runs like a beast.....
Brilliant, thank you so much. I haven't cleaned the filter on mine enough, and had no idea you could get to the cyclone part. GENIUS. thank you so much. 👍👍👍👍
I did clean the cyclone 5/28. Filter too. I used the shower massage in the tub and just kept running water into it, then turning upside down, over and over until no more dirty dark water with pieces of black stuff, eventually the water was clear. Then I shook it and stood it in front of a fan on low speed over night while on a towel. Then I placed it in front of the heating vent the next morning-it is May 29th, 2019 in Illinois but sooo cold I had to put on the heat. Today, 5/30 in the am, reassembled the vacuum, turned on and viola, working fine, picking up, no problem seen.
Again...thank u my dear kind&gentle soul for showing us how to keep our Dyson clean to keep it to last a long time so that it’ll keep running lik a charm😊 A new Sub..
Hello Cecilia. Thank very much for subscribing to my channel. I really appreciate it. To be honest it feels good to read your kind words. Greetings from Los Angeles. 😀
Big brother at LA. Thank you zillions for this Vid. I came to learn how to clear bin in my Dyson and bingo i got my machine back spot clean. I belong to the that category who see the glass half full. Thank you for imparting your knowledge. All the best. Sx
Awesome video! I'd probably take it apart in my garage or somewhere outside and clean the non-washable part outside just to minimize dust flying around in my home. Kind of gross to wipe all the dirt off in the sink for me, but to each his own! Thanks again!
Very helpful video. Egads clean that canister away from your kitchen counter, take it outside or do it over a garbage bin. You cant see all the little particles landing on your dishes etc. "I've been drinking the tap water for half a century"....yeah but lets check back in another 10 and besides where are you that your tap water is good...good for you. Thank you for this video.
You can use water to clean out the cyclone portion. The trick is you MUST LET IT DRY. Most people do not have the patience. It may take 48 hours or so. That is why Dyson has told their customers not to wash the cyclone. Another way to clean the cyclone is to use another vacuum that has good suction. It is possible to vacuum out most the dirt and dust that collects around and behind the screen. Also, use the vacuum on the bottom portion to remove dust. Happy vacuuming all.
I had cleaned it out with water and works well, I was waiting 2 days drying the cyclone but it’s worth. However, I love my Shark instead dyson, this is complicated and the brush is always blocking on the carpet.
If you separate the cyclone halves (3 screws), you can absolutely clean it out with water. You need to do this to unclog all the little passages. Blow it dry with a blow gun, then let it sit for a day to dry even further. If you don't do this, and replace the motor filters every couple of years, your machine will steadily lose suction (Dyson's claims to the contrary notwithstanding).
@@julieD5508 They are deep inside of it. There's another video on here that shows you how to do that, and you need a star-tipped screw driver to remove them- it also needs to be very long because the screws are deep inside the canister-
Thank you, Michael! This was a very helpful video - Just what I was looking for (I also enjoyed your sense of humor, especially regarding the tap water, LOL.) Thank you for explaining!
I use a small leaf blower to blast the dust out of the cyclone (take it outside to do obvs). It shifts the majority of dust. I also do that to the filter if I haven't got time to wash and dry it.
Thanks for watching my video and your comment. Not a bad idea to use a leaf blower to clean a vacuum cleaner. Thanks for letting me know. Have a great week. 😀
So what I just did was I took a leaf blower and blew the junk out from behind the mesh. Not perfect but way better! Seems to work great now. I also used the blower to blow the excess water from the filters for a jump start on drying. And I blew the dirt from other nooks and crannies in the vacuum as well. Yay! Yay! I love blowing as much as I love sucking. I got a mini leaf blower so it is girly size and still worked
The bin is clean, but I dare say if you hold the cyclone upright and strike the sides, ample dust will fall from the interior, and the fine mesh of the screen is still dirty. Dyson may claim that there is a limit of how much additional dirt will accumulate and it will not exceed harmful amounts, but I take mine apart and clean with water, and dry. The only residue will be contaminants in the water, such as calcium and iron, depending on the quality of your water. If I lived in Flint I wouldn't do it. It takes some patience and skills to deal with the two compression springs and the friction clips around the top, however. The process shown in the video complies with the manufacturers instructions, and I should think that the machine will function, as desired.
Today, August 18, 2018, I started a Giveaway of a Dyson Cyclone V10 Motorhead. Please find out how to enter this Giveaway and see the terms and conditions by clicking on the link below: gleam.io/n0Y1O/woopniks-dyson-v10-motorhead-giveaway 😀
Vacuum stores will routinely disassemble the cyclone into separate pieces when servicing Dyson vacuums. They wash these separate prices with high pressure sprayer, laundry detergent, and rubbing alcohol. They then let them dry for a 24-48 hrs in front of a fan before reassembling. If you clean yours at as you already do, and it has an odor, you may need to deep clean the cyclone by taking it apart and washing the components.
Hi, thanks for this. Is this easy to do? I have cleaned mine so many times and unfortunately did run the post-filter under water because of so much fine dust. I let it dry for a few days before reassembling and it seems to work fine except it has a funny odour now. Maybe it's time to give up and get it serviced. Thoughts?
Thank you. Very easy and clear instructions. I have a lot of caked dust particles under the cyclone’s fine mesh filter. Is there any way to clean behind this mesh? Thanks again
Hello. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, there is a way behind the mesh. I don’t recommend to do that because it means to strip down the vacuum cleaner and I really don’t think that cleaning behind the mesh will give you any advantages. 😀
I agree with It's-a me Megatron, if Dyson came out with a BAGGED vacuum, that would be most excellent. Right now, I need my Hoover upright to clean the Dyson!
I totally agree with you! People really annoy me when they say dyson hoovers are a gimmick or basically not good ! What they actually mean is that they are so stupid that they don’t know how to clean there hoovers out properly? Probably more interested in looking in the mirror than actually reading the instructions for your hoover 😂
I have a Dyson and am glad I watched this video. However, I would not have cleaned all that dirt from the filter in my sink. He could have put all that crud in a wastebasket. Good to know though that we don't wash all the parts in water.
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! I never even knew about the inner part (last part you cleaned without water). For now on I will clean it every three months. I subscribed to checkout you other videos because I found you informative, quick to the point and entertaining too! Have a nice day!
I HAVE to clean the DIRT from behind the MESH! It's accumulated lots of loose and stuck dirt. I'm glad you said no water on that part because I was about to use water. But im thinking about it again because I'm desperate. My vaccum smells like an onion because I sucked up some onion pieces when I was having a bad day. I regret that. Even if it didn't smell like an onion, all the crap behind the mesh drives me nuts and I imagine one day it will be packed full of dirty dirt. So, what the HECK CAN I DO to get it out? ?? Thanks!! Soooo much!
Nothing else will clean it out but water I don't understand what he means by using a rag that doesn't do anything,. I own 3 Dyson and that's the only way I can clean it out
Oh thank god i thought that top part of the bin was to come off but i couldn't find out how it was starting to get a mess in the upper portion and tried to wipe it out with paper towel but the bulk of parts in the bin made it impossible. I had went as far to contact Dyson but the person wasn't helpful they said don't come apart and told me to try some water through
You can totally just rinse out the chamber with hot water. This allows you to get out all the dust and caked on bits. Besides, when you wash the filter you have to wait 1 day+, in that time the plastic will EASILY dry.
Thank you for your really informative video. It’s great to have people like you to share tips. I will be tuning in to you and have subscribed. Thanks once again.
So I actually DID rinse the entire core out and used a blow dryer ( hahaha don’t laugh) to assure it was completely dry when reassembling. What would happen if you clean with water???
Uuuuuh, I have always detached the whole ‘can/ casing thing’ and clean out that upper area that you showed that was so dirty every single time that I empty it! I couldn’t imagine just letting that stuff build up! I didn’t know you even could leave it like that for any amount or extended period of time.
Thank you, for your very informative video. Really appreciate your doing this. Saves a bunch! If it had been around a few years ago, I wouldn't have had to buy a new cyclone. C'est la vie! Hahahahahahahaha!
@andreah6165 yes. I own three Dyson and have cleaned them all using water and they work fine. They just need to be given plenty of time to dry before use.
Do you know how to get the cyclone part open to clean the dust out of there? I get lots of dust inside the metal mesh, and it looks like yours has the same. Is that something that just can’t be cleaned without more invasive techniques?
I’m back with a question. I’ve never cleaned the inner part (the one you can’t clean with water). There is crud packed on inside that I can’t get to. Is there a way to open that piece up so I can brush it? Everything else went just as you demonstrated. I hope there’s a way. I’d love to keep my Dyson a long time. I also have a cordless one that I also love. If there is a way to clean the inside part I can’t reach, I’d love a video. Maybe you’ve already done one. Thank you!
Hello Laura. I have done a video for the Dyson V10/11 which shows how to clean the inner part of these cordless vacuums: ua-cam.com/video/qpA1gmlStck/v-deo.html To open the inner workings of the DC65 is not that different. Please let me know if the video helps you. If not I might be able to do a video about the DC65. Have a wonderful day.
Jeff Hauser I flip it upside down and fill it with hot water. I shake it and then let the nastiness just poor out. I suggest doing it in the shower. You will have to do this several times. You just have to wait several days to use it again. It has to be dry before you use it again. I don't clean it this much all the time. But a few times a year. The rest of the time I do a more general clean.
You absolutely can. I did this the other day with my air compressor. Do this outside in the backyard or something so you don’t have airborne dust inside your home. He does mention not to use water on the cyclone part only to use a brush on the mesh. I actually used water to clean that out. Used my air compressor to air it dry then let it sit for a day. It works perfectly without an issue. I’ve been using my dyson dc66 for about 2 years now. My wife loves it, I love it, and my family always asks us how we keep the carpets so clean. Before this purchase I was about to invest $1200 in a central vacuum system and I’m glad I haven’t made that jump yet. Maybe in the future who knows.
There are 5 clips above the fine mesh, you insert a screwdriver above these clips and pry it apart. These two units must come apart as fine dander gets caught behind these screens. Once the two pieces are apart you can wash these screens with a spray of hot water for a proper clean.
Yes! I use a compressor to hit the cyclone from many angles until the cloud of dusty smoke stops. It is quite a dirty job, though. I put a rain poncho and rubber gloves on before I do to try and not come back in the house looking like I survived a dust storm in the desert.
There are 5 clips above the screens, insert a flat screwdriver and pry the unit off these clips, then you can dump the fines and wash with water. This guy does not go far enough with these cleaning instructions.
Thank you for the information Lynn as to how to clean the fine dirt from inside the mesh screen! My husband just bought me the Dyson ball and after seeing all the dust inside the screen it drove me crazy since I wanted to clean it out and was frustrated after looking through the entire manual and it said nothing about cleaning out the screen. This is my second Dyson and I love them. Can someone explain to me why it is that dust collects beneath the cyclone also instead of just in the bottom of the dust bin? Is there any way to prevent this from happening?
SIDE NOTE: I had to clean up a ton of plaster dust ( very fine powdery) because our shopVac wasn’t working right ... so it was a very fine dust throughout like flour!
Woopnik I found you very entertaining and that is half of the battle. You get the message across very well. I have had Dyson Vacuums since 1993 and every one has been washed using the shower. I have a extra long bottle brush for the hose. 1) disconnect the hose 2) Holding the two ends together fill it with hot water, but do not extend it. 3) give it a shake (using both hands) and then extend it (ensuring to keep the ends upright - it should be in an extended "U" shape); keeping it upright. Extending it helps release the dirt. 4) empty it and depending on how dirty it is, refill the now not extended hose with water and repeat the process. 5) Empty water out. if you have a large bottle brush, push it through and flush water through. NOTE: do not leave your hose in a bucket to soak. Doing this will cause stubborn dirt to not fully remove itself and it will set like cement.
Hello Kerry. A damp or musty smell is caused when dust in the cyclone has come into contact with water. As in your case the smell may occur if the filter goes back into the machine wet. Moisten a cloth with undiluted vinegar. Wipe off the exterior of the vacuum with the vinegar. Deodorize the receptacle and interior areas, where the bagless receptacle and filter go, by wiping them with the vinegar-moistened cloth. Dry the vacuum with a clean cloth. Place two drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball. Drop the cotton ball into the dust bin before securing it to the vacuum to prevent odor from building up. Vanilla extract is an effective natural odor absorber. I hope I was of any help. Let me know how it went.
Woopnik THANK YOU so much!! I will definitely go purchase vanilla extract tomorrow. I couldn’t find the manual and I submerged the entire canister in water thinking I could clean it that way, and it stinks SO bad. I did order a new filter and a manual. Thank you so much for your quick response and I will let you know how it goes.
You are very welcome. You might have to apply vinegar multiple times. You may use also fabric sheets. Just make sure the Dyson is absolutely dry before you use it again. Have a great day 😀😋👍

How did your partner feel about cleaning the dust next to clean dishes? 😂 thank you for the informative video though!
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! I never even knew about the inner part (last part you cleaned without water). For now on I will clean it every three months. I subscribed to checkout you other videos because I found you informative, quick to the point and entertaining too! Have a nice day!
Thank you for subscribing to my channel and your kind words. I really appreciate it. Greetings from Los Angeles.
I own 3 Dyson and that's the only way I can clean it out
I had no choice but to use water. I'm currently air drying out the parts. O well. There's no tool to currently clean the gunk.
nflcolts83 Does it smell musty after? I washed my cyclone in the sink and dried in the sun but it now smells “off”
"How to clean a vacuum....(wait for it)...cleaner!"
Great video !!! Thanks for the info and I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2020.
Well Carmen, you failed miserably!
Oh thank god i thought that top part of the bin was to come off but i couldn't find out how it was starting to get a mess in the upper portion and tried to wipe it out with paper towel but the bulk of parts in the bin made it impossible. I had went as far to contact Dyson but the person wasn't helpful they said don't come apart and told me to try some water through
Thank you again for the video
Hello Brian. You are very welcome. 😀
@@Woopnik I'm just so happy that you keep the video up so I don't have to remember all the steps.
This video will be up as long as you and other viewers need it. 😀
Danke for making this, will go clean mine now! Auf wiedersehen!
You are very willkommen. Thank you for watching my video. If you like to support my channel, please subscribe. Greetings from Los Angeles. 😀
You can totally just rinse out the chamber with hot water. This allows you to get out all the dust and caked on bits.
Besides, when you wash the filter you have to wait 1 day+, in that time the plastic will EASILY dry.
You are right. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day. 😀
I'm glad to hear that you used water because I did before I stumbled upon this video! It's drying right now. 😆😂🤷
try using those care cleaning clothes. They are gentle but they pick up dirt like a charm.
😀👍
This worked great for my dyson DC 50
They sell the filters on amazon at a great price. I think washing it will still keep crud and hair in it. Just get new ones.
You are very funny. I had a Dyson for 20 years and I think that is why it lasted so long because I kept it clean. It finally died.
Thank you for your really informative video. It’s great to have people like you to share tips. I will be tuning in to you and have subscribed. Thanks once again.
Hello Canterbury Bell. Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate that you subscribed to my channel. Best greetings from Los Angeles 😀
So I actually DID rinse the entire core out and used a blow dryer ( hahaha don’t laugh) to assure it was completely dry when reassembling.
What would happen if you clean with water???
That is what I want to know.
Uuuuuh, I have always detached the whole ‘can/ casing thing’ and clean out that upper area that you showed that was so dirty every single time that I empty it! I couldn’t imagine just letting that stuff build up! I didn’t know you even could leave it like that for any amount or extended period of time.
Awww thank you so much ! I was about to wash the cyclone as another video on you tube told me ! So glad I saw this :)!thank you x
You are very welcome. I am here to help. Please let me know if I can do something else for you. Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon. 😀
Woopnik your so kind thank you so much x
😀👍
I'm so sad I didn't see this video earlier to wash earlier today. I wet mine. Help?
Hello Shirley. I am sorry to hear about your problem. Of course I am here to help you. Please let me know exactly what happened. 😀
Great Video!!!!!!!
Thanks 😊
Thanks for the demo! Very helpful!!
You are very welcome. Have a great day. 😀
I did not have that tan on the purple part. I have a filter in the roller ball part. I am worried about breaking the top where the handle is.
Oh my goodness Thank you so much!!
You are very welcome. Have a wonderful weekend. 😀
Thank you, for your very informative video. Really appreciate your doing this. Saves a bunch! If it had been around a few years ago, I wouldn't have had to buy a new cyclone. C'est la vie! Hahahahahahahaha!
Hello Ron. Thank you for your kind words. I hope you have a great weekend. 😀👍
How do you clean the Dyson that doesnt have a washable filter?
The HEPA Filter on the ball isn't washable. You'll have to buy a new HEPA Filter for it every few months.
I personally use a glove to get the dust out and then hose everything down. Let it dry for a day and done!
That’s a very good idea Nara. Have a great weekend. 😀
Very helpful, thank you!!
Does the mesh internal filter get very dirty ever? Mine isn’t dirty and I wonder if this is normal.
Nice video! But all this work and dust is big reason I prefer bagged machines.
I understand. The dust bin of the Dyson is bothering me too. Very dusty. Which vacuum cleaner do you have? And thanks for watching my video.
Woopnik
I have a Kirby Ultimate G Diamond edition and love it. Sure it's heavy but it's built and it runs like a tank!
I have done a video for the Dyson V10/11 which shows how to clean the inner part of these cordless vacuums: ua-cam.com/video/qpA1gmlStck/v-deo.html
To open the inner workings of the DC65 is not that different. Please let me know if the video helps you. If not I might be able to do a video about the DC65. Have a wonderful day.
Nothing about disassembly of the cyclone to clear clogs!
Milton Alvis thanks for saving me 14 minutes of watching this guy dance.
How do I remove all the dust inside the cyclone and under the screen? I even tried blowing it with a hair dryer and it still didn't budge
Seriously. I'm about to take the yard blower to it right now! Or try to find another vacuum to suck it out. ....
Well made easy to use
is there a way to make sure it's ok if you do get water in the piece with all the dirt on it?
How to get to the dust on the inside of the mesh screen?
I love your kitchen! It looks like it's all original from when the house was built... 1940s?
Hello. Thanks for watching my video. You are about right. This building was built at the beginning of the 1950’s. Have a great day. 😀
I am Han’s, where is Frahns? - great job Arnold
Thanks. I appreciate it. Ich komme wieder!
any way you can make the audio quality any worse?
Is there a way to clean inside the filter? We have an abundance of dust built up on the inside and cannot find a way to clean it.
Dexter Jones i clean every part in that way; uses less water and the cyclone comes out extremely clean.
Dexter Jones yes! This is what I do too!! And I’ve never had a problem
Could you use an air compressor to spray out the cyclone part?
Thanks for this information. Finally I cleaned the vacuum cleaner thoroughly.
Yes! I use a compressor to hit the cyclone from many angles until the cloud of dusty smoke stops. It is quite a dirty job, though. I put a rain poncho and rubber gloves on before I do to try and not come back in the house looking like I survived a dust storm in the desert.
Then wash it
There is still a lot of dust behind the screen. What to do??
With an air compressor you can blow out the dust bin.
There are 5 clips above the screens, insert a flat screwdriver and pry the unit off these clips, then you can dump the fines and wash with water. This guy does not go far enough with these cleaning instructions.
Lynn Rahn thanks needed this
Thank you for the information Lynn as to how to clean the fine dirt from inside the mesh screen!

Good help this 👏👏
SIDE NOTE: I had to clean up a ton of plaster dust ( very fine powdery) because our shopVac wasn’t working right ... so it was a very fine dust throughout like flour!
Personally, I would have put all my dishes away. You are spreading the dirt over your clean pots and pans!
You are absolutely right. My mistake. Thank you for pointing that out. Have a great Memorial Day. 😀
Woopnik I am in the UK. 😀
I guess no Memorial Day in the U.K. I am in Los Angeles. 😀
Woopnik All the very best to you. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Woopnik I found you very entertaining and that is half of the battle. You get the message across very well.
I have had Dyson Vacuums since 1993 and every one has been washed using the shower.
I have a extra long bottle brush for the hose.
1) disconnect the hose
2) Holding the two ends together fill it with hot water, but do not extend it.
What about the second filter?
Many thanks! Big help!
You are very welcome. Have a good day. 😀
This video was helpful but my Dyson smells I didn’t dry the filter and now the canister smells like mildew 😩😤 any tips would be appreciated
Have a great day 😀😋👍
Thanks for sharing!
I have a large amount of dust underneath the mesh that I can’t removed even with an air compressor
