    Good job on this. Useful edits, man! It's not easy to narrate, operate the camera, film and wrench all at the same time. I know how difficult it is, and you did very well. I don't even have that kind of Elantra, I just wanted to see what everyone else had to work with. Thanks for the inside peek.

    Great video. Took 6-8 hrs. Lower timing shield was a PITA. I did not adjust the timing gears at all I just put on the new belt and tensioner to feel sort of tight and it was fine. Also replaced PS, Alt, AC belts. Water pumps don't all come with the same head so you may have to drill a hole in one of the shields. Between this, the thermostat and radiator I replaced the thing is tip top now.

    What a world we live in. My favorite car guru doing what I have always wanted to do on my exact make and model. Thanks man, gonna order new water pump, aluminum underdrive pullys (if I can find them) and timing belt, then set to 10btdc. I am confident I can do this solely due to your video. game changer. I feel like I need to pay you lol.

      Love that G4GC btw. Oh it's important to note that for some reason advance auto doesn't allow the option for that motor for that make and model. It comes up G4CP as default and it's the only option. Because of that some parts are incorrect, one example is the output speed sensor plug (think it's called a pigtail, please correct me if I am wrong) however the input speed sensor *plug" is correct. I can't speak for the output sensor itself as I ordered it from Amazon, it was an exact match. The plug though was identical to the plugs for the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors the same. Maybe they made a mistake, if so it was the third time, three strikes and ur out. I so my own part locating now. Being smarter than an advance auto employee isnt saying much though. I like to ask them what a certain product is for and what it does and smh while they read it out loud seemingly seeing it for the first time. How incompetent can someone be 😂

    Again its a very good chance he has put too much tension on your timing belt. Depending on how tight it is it may not be safe to drive it. Loosening the timing belt tension is easy but its best done by a professional. GL

    Just for future knowledge, the plastic gasket/ rubber gasket that goes on the timing belt cover has been known to cause problems in other cars. What happens is it gets very brittle and falls apart into the timing belt area upon assembly or during inspection. When this happens it will fill the space for the crank cog and cause the belt to jump timing essentially taking out the motor. Yes it is nice to have when the car is new but it is a danger to the motor later on so there is no real harm in removing it to prevent interference from belt jumping.

    Cool these videos saved me like 2500 bucks and a lot of time . My belt actually broke but it seems fine with the new belt. There does seem to be a humming noise or tone emitting from one of the belts. Maybe I can upload a video. It may be the gasket on the timing belt cover. I wasn't able to get it on

  • @myRatchets

    He probably over tightened the Timing belt, you can loosen the timing belt by easing off the timing belt tensioner , but first you need to remove the top timing belt cover. Just ease off the tension on the timing belt little bit at a time until the noise goes away. Thats my best guess.

    Hey man good video. I have to do one of these Monday at work and I always like to watch a video ahead of time if I can so I can do it faster. By the way, do you have an electric impact driver? You should invest in one if you do a lot of work on cars. They don't have a ton of torque but are great for most bolts, 14mm or under. Saves a lot of time taking off covers and small fasteners.

    i followed your video on replacing a head gasket. Well, I got that all done however, I think I moved the bottom gear for the timing belt when I was zip-tie it in place. I also didnt lock the head with that special tool. I didnt realize that the rockers can move independently of the cam shaft. So I äm now going to check and hope this video fixes the problem. if not, ill have to find a video on how to set everything in the head to make sure everything in there is timed properly.
    I dont know anything about cars so I äm not even sure what all that stuff in there is called which makes googling it difficult

Is there an easy way to remove the upper timing belt cover without going too crazy and taking off all the stuff you did before you removed the upper timing belt cover? Thank you.

    I used a 1-inch section of old radiator hose to hold the water pump pulleys in place while I inserted a bolt. It saved a lot of frustration. I inserted the piece of hose between the pulleys and the body sidewall. It acted like a spring to hold it. I guess a small piece foam would work as well.

    I have a 2010 elantra with a rough idle. I see that the advance timing is erratic on no#1 cylinder. Timing belt was changed . The engine vibration is still there at idle. Also I bet the starting issue is due to the tensioner. I I hear noises like a squealing that lasts a few seconds when I cold start the car, and sometimes a rattling noise. MY mechanic tells me he is hearing tensioner bearing noise. Can a bad bearing cause a rough idle, and this noise. Should I have him replace the tensioner. Can I replace the tensioner my self! Thanks EJR

    Those two white marks will line up with the line across the top of the cylinder head, good to use multiple marks for reference, don't really need the valve cover off and they are factory marks

      Ratchets And Wrenches can the engine and head be timed separately from each other without issue? I'm doing a head gasket on my 05 tiburon 2.0 but my wife's stepdad took the timing belt off before I could get it timed and I don't know if anything was moved or not.

    • @romanval69
      @romanval69 7 років тому

      Yeah as long as the cam and crank at at top dead center the belt should slide on at the right position. After putting back the new timing belt you should verify it by hand cranking the engine clockwise to make sure the top dead centers stay lined up (remember the crankshaft spins twice as fast as the camshaft). If you're off by one tooth the car will run very rough (or not at all).

  • @Chubbycat747

    I notice you use an impact wrench for the harmonic balancer bolt. How do you keep engine from spinning, or does it matter?

    • @myRatchets
      @myRatchets  11 років тому

      If you use an impact gun you dont need to keep the engine from spinning, if you dont have air, you can use an electric gun but make sure its strong enough. There are also harmonic balancer holding tools but not sure if Hyundai has one.. GL

    • @Chubbycat747
      @Chubbycat747 11 років тому

      I was having trouble getting it off, so I used the old breaker-bar bump-crank-it routine. I used a cheap electric harbor-freight impact wrench (with lock-tight) to tighten it (I can't afford a GOOD air compressor right now). It seems to work.

    • @myRatchets
      @myRatchets  11 років тому +1

      cool, that bolt is going to be a beast to get off next time though! You can always tighten it with the electric one and drive to your local shop and have them tighten it with their gun...they usually do it for free or just ask for a tip or something! GL

    My water pump is making a weird noise. I thought was the belt and remove then tight again, but still making it. When I push gas noise goes away, when I stop or an idling it make the noise. I used a stetoscope and I hear the noise by the water pump bearing, but the car is not getting hot. Everything is working fine.

      adam chapman I'm sure you figured this out a while ago but it sounds like an issue with the cooling system. Like maybe you did a coolant flush as well and didn't get enough back in? I did a coolant flush a while ago and as part of it I undid the engine block drain plugs. I filled it back up with coolant but since the thermostat was closed I didn't get the new coolant back in the engine block and it ended up overheating and smoking. I ended up pouring coolant down the hoses and into the engine and got another half gallon or so in there and problem was solved. Anyway, I assume you may have had a similar issue but if not I'm curious to know what it was! I'm halfway through this repair and it's always good to know what could go wrong.
