There are far thinner wool blankets like the ones given to city homeless in SF,CA... if you wrap up under a good outer shell it will keep you warmer. As for sleeping, you don't lay flat out... you sit as compact as you can on and against the best insulators you can find. When I slept outdoors homeless without any wool or warm materials I dug a hole to sit in and filled it with the warmest materials that I could find for insulation. One time all that was available was sand, so I buried myself in sand up to my neck and wrapped my head and neck as best I could. Might sound lame but I survived freezing temperatures which by the way also works to stay cooler in extreme heat!😊

I found out while in the army that i had a bad allergy to wool. So I used to put the wool blanket on top of the cot and then the sleeping bag on top of the blanket. fast forward 30+ years and it's now referred to as a sleep system.

Okay, let's talk relative here. First of all, people who use wool blankets do not pack them inside nylon backpacks. They almost always go on the outside of the pack as a bedroll. Secondly, the proper way to utilize a wool blanket is in a triangle pattern so's to create an envelope (not a sandwich).
And finally, a good wool blanket is used to preserve heat, not create heat so basically, it will keep the BTU's that you put out and ideally is used in conjunction with a good campfire. BTW, that's another plus of the wool blanket that if a spark falls on it, it won't burn through and your camp won't catch fire.
It's supposed to be used to create air pockets that your body heats up and acts as an insulation barrier between the outside cold air and the warm air inside of the blanket. I've used this concept when I spent a few weeks sleeping in the back of a moving truck using a moving blanket.
I'd say that it's not fair to compare a wool blanket for use as a sleeping system to modern camping applications. It's like saying a Corvette sucks at the mud pit or a monster truck is horrible at a Formula 1 race.
I agree with you that it's not the ideal bedding if you want something lighter and more compact (that sounded so stupid as I typed it, but it's true nevertheless).
I think the best sleep system is the USGI MSS or Tennier's Modular Sleep System. I've spend many a night with their -10 degree bag and nothing else in sub-freezing temps and had to keep it open because it was almost too warm. Sure, it weighs 4.3lbs and is the size of a soccer ball when compressed, but you know what? You won't freeze to death (like, literally die) and in the end, if you want to save 1lb for that same temperature rating, you're going to spend a good $600 or so instead of 50 bucks U.S.. I'll carry the extra pound since I'm already carrying an X and a Y chromosome.
I also agree that wool blankets are too hyped up. In the real world, they're awesome with a nice campfire going, but then again, I wouldn't sleep with a sleeping bag without a good campfire going either.
    Good vid.
I just scored a mint queen sized Hudson Bay for $125 from someone who's owned it for half a century. I didn't believe it until she brought it out to me. I didn't haggle one bit. Then I bought a nice Pendleton for $10 bucks about 15 minutes later from someone in that same town (the same pattern that Jeremiah Johnson's coat was made of). That was a good day.

"...utilize a wool blanket ...", oops, sorry I did not receive the memo stating "rather than utilize the correct word use we should now utilize utilize." Using utilize comes across as pompous and self ingratiating. Also, use and utilize do not mean the same thing. We utilize something for other than it was intended for. e.g. we use a chair for sitting upon, however we may utilize a chair as a step stool. Hope the above helps you.

Very good! I like the video. I've got a large wool blanket I sometimes bring camping when it is cold. I cut a slit in it right in the middle to make it into a poncho. makes it a lot easier to wear as an additional layer while moving around. I've also attached thin line to the ends so I can hang it underneath the hammock. The blanket can now easily be used as a normal blanket, as a poncho and as a quilt underneath the hammock. :D
    All the best!

The problem is inadequate preparation for the task, I slept on the ground in a tent made up from 4 5x5 shelter quarters, I made end triangles , the base was a 12 pound sleeping bag on a moving pad doubled, wool blanket folded into 3 layers, depending on the weather I used one or two three candle lanterns to supply heat, or an alcohol burner with a 25mm wick for cooking, coffee, and heat.
So winter hiking means pulling a sled with what you need, summer is pulling a cart.

I went hammock camping in damp conditions (rain and fog), and my wool blanket significantly outperformed a cotton blanket I had brought with me. The cotton blanket soaked up the moisture and became clammy and uncomfortable. The cheap army-style wool blanket got damp, but maintained it's insulative properties and kept me comfortable all night. Now I never go hammock camping without at least one wool blanket. Caveat: I'm a car camper, so the bulk and weight isn't as much of an issue for me.

I recently bought the same blanket by Pendleton. I only use it indoors and I love it. But I realize now that it won't keep someone warm by itself. One of the reasons I love it is because its compact (although a bit heavy) and I prefer to layer instead of having a one size fits all blanket that might cause me the sweat at night in the event that I get too hot. A good quality wool blanket has a high level of breathability that I like. Thanks for the review! Cheers!

I use a wool blanket just to sit in the snow and it does have some value against conductivity, but after an hour, it is now stuck to the snow.
My new take on it is make a pad out of reflectix (a car windshield sunshade works great too) and put that under or on top of the blanket. It's like a heated seat...

I agree. I love wool blankets, but it's a romantic way of camping for strong young people, I can't do that anymore. In my case, I used then with hot-worm weather and sleeping beside a good fire, the whole shebang or the enjoyment was poor. But now... tent, good insolation and a powerful down sleeping bag. Now my wool blankets are at home, specially the cute Swedish Army one, for the sofa. Regards.

some tips and tricks I have learned about using wool blankets.
first if you have a fire dig a whole roughly the size of a person, not too deep, then bury the warm ashes and coals into the hole (make sure its deep enough to not be too hot to sleep on) this will warm the ground up so it will not suck the heat out of you when you lay down on it.
second when wrapping the blanket around you position it so that you can take a corner of the blanket and pull it over your feet such that the corner is wrapped around you feet from the bottom, then take the short side of the "diamond" and pull it over your legs and tuck it under you, then do the same with the long side tucking it under and snuggling into the newly formed "Bag" you can then pull the upper corner over your head forming a burrito, mummy bag. this prevents being unraveled mid sleep. look up a video hoow to use a wool blanket as a sleeping bag.
thirdly a wool blanket NEEDS something to block the wind, this can be pretty much anything, some use a tightly woven cotton sheet, but I would suggest either a goretex bivy, tarp or one of the reflective emergency blankets, this will drastically increase the warmth value of the blanket.
fourth I have heard that Scottish highlanders would dip their wool blankets in water in cold weather, causing the fibers of the blanket to swell, effectively blocking the wind, as well as in freezing conditions cause the formation of ice on the outside of the blanket creating a mini ice cave blocking the wind, meanwhile the insulating while wet properties would keep the highlander warm inside of the blanket cocoon. (test that one safely before trying it in an emergency only, I have not been brave enough to personally verify that)
obviously pound for pound and dollar value wise a down sleeping bag in a waterproof goretex bivy will keep you warmer more effectively then a wool blanket, but a wool blanket is more versatile and is safer to have a fire around.

Another item to consider when purchasing a wool blanket (or two) is that not all blankets are the same. Ideally 100% Virgin Wool is the best ratio. Also Wool Blankets combined with a long fire and two reflectors is the best way to cope with negative degree temps. Also wearing fresh clean thick wool socks and taking measures with your wardrobe to protect yourself when you are burritoed in your shelter. Functionally Conduction is also a big issue. Getting off the ground is the best way to maximize your shelter set up (sleeping pad, raised bed, Hammock system if you have the right gear).

I use my summer bag in the winter. Basically all year round bag.
It's sold as a two season bag, but it's a good one, typically used for high elevations where temperatures can still drop.
It's comfort is zero degrees with a limit of 5C. I've no idea what the extreme rating is.
Anyway, for me now at 64, I can take it pretty close to zero, but when I need a bit more insulation I have the Softie suit, plus a goretex bivi bag helps also.
It allows me to keep everything simple.

Great video about the pros and cons of wool. Nothing beats a goose down bag on an air mattress inside a fully enclosed tent. Wool blankets are great for emergencies if stranded in a vehicle and
where wool blankets really shine is under or over a sleeping bag. But again if you have a good bag you can skip building a fire to stay warm, not so with wool. In the summer wool is acceptable but anything below 45 degrees is not using common sense unless in emergency. Air is the best insulation so a self inflating backpackers pad cannot be beat on frozen ground.

The bulk and weight can both be mitigated if you use a kilt. That keeps the weight on your waist where it feels lightest, and gives you 2 blankets (or more) worth of material that doesn't need to fit into your bag.

I am in a more moderate area that only gets to 29f. Personally I prefer wool myself in a cowboy style wrap.
I use 3 layers, a waterproof outer layer, then 2 4lb wool blanket layers. I wrap in the first layer bottom-right-left folds. The second wool layer bottom-left-right folds. Then the outer layer bottom-right-left folds. It has always kept me toasty. Especially with a woman, more about that later.
I find this much less bulky than bags are and is stored in my vehicle in case of roadside emergency. You can't store these sleep systems long term all compressed, it will degrade alot of them. They need to be lofted between use.
Now about the companion, my setup is two hiking belts(each with a lavvu half, ground sheet, tarp, and 1 wool blanket). That is roughly 9 pounds each for those items. I won't go into the additional items for each belt as they are different but my belt is 15 lbs(19 lbs with the blanket) and is the heaviest. As a 64 year old man and have no problem carrying this for miles.
The lavvu acts as ankle length rain gear, an outer coat, a lean to, and an 8' diameter tent with both halfs. The wool blanket is not only part of my sleep system but also a warm warp if needed under the lavvu.
So tell me how much does your rain gear, coat, tent and sleep system weigh? More than 7.5 lbs???
And with a lady wrapped up in the sleep system with it doubles the amount of heat a single person puts out. Lol isn't togetherness wonderful. Lol

Just stumbled upon this vid and subscribed 🙂. Another thing which might be helpful for people that find wool really itch is mix water and pure lanolin together and apply to the area that touches your skin and let air dry. Don't put loads on tho cos it will clog up the wool so won't insulate as well. This also adds a little bit extra water repellency 👍I did this on my thick wool overshirt and i can wear it with a t-shirt on now with no ichy arms.
On the subject of wet wool , i use my overshirt straight out of the washing machine and it's still very , very warm (5°c with a thin t-shirt). I think the misconception is that people think you can get piss wet through and it'll still be perfect when in reality you need to twist and ring out all extra water (or as i do, but the wash cycle on an extra spin finish)

    • @jimbomagee2950

    • @K.F.L
      @K.F.L Рік тому

@jimbo Magee It's the sheep oil that's secreted from its skin. I never said it would. I said over appying it would clog up the wool, which would have negative effects on the insulation. Applying it in moderation is great.

The other consideration is that a good wool blanket will last for generations even if you use it every night. Even the MSS isn't designed to be used for years. The bivvy is essential to carry with it to keep it dry but even that won't allow you to keep it used daily for even a few years. If you're only going camping or out on patrol for a year then the MSS will work, but don't let it get near any campfire. The civilian ones won't last nearly as long, especially if they're light weight even if they're super insulative. The outer fabric will tear at some point.

I'm in central Texas, it doesn't get nearly that cold here. I use a sleeping bag in cooler weather. We seldom get to freezing weather. My bag is rated to about 38 or 40F. Often I just use a cotton sheet or flannel blanket. On the few nights it gets below 40F I use a military surplus wool blanket over my sleeping bag. But as you mentioned, it shifts and you end up with cold spots. I use large binder clips to hold it in place. I've been thinking about trying one of the blankets that has a reflective side on it. Really I need a second heavier bag, it would be a lot less hassle. But I've resisted since I'd only use it maybe one out of 8 or 10 nights that I camp. After 2 or 3 nights of restless sleep you definitely feel the effects. Your blankets are really nice, especially that red one!

There's a time and place for wool blankets, but I like to use them as a cover or liner in my sleep system in conjunction with my sleeping bag. Depends if I'm using a hammock, tarp, or both, or a tent. Anytime I'm using a tarp, I'm having a fire, but there are situations where a fire just won't be possible, especially if there is a major wind storm or heavy thunderstorms with showers. In those cases if it's really cold, I use the wool as a liner and I always carry lots of hand warmers so I'll toss some of those in my sleep system and these work really well.
However, every vehicle I have has a wool blanket for emergencies, much more practical then those pos space blankets that really don't do any good but add condensation.

I'd rather crotchet or hand make my own wool blanket. It's cheaper and you can make them any size or thickness you want. If you got sewing and crotcheting skills. I also hear that they're itchy but you didn't state that. So I guess thats a myth. Also you can't compare all will to be the same. There are I think two or three different types of wool.

I put the stuff in my humvee but it got way too bulky, and without a lot of stuff. I would have maybe passed on some of it if I'd seen this first. It was just different stuff I had to try, I thought some of it might be more comfortable. After spending thousands on this stuff, there's not much I think I'll end up using. I should have been looking at these YT videos sooner. Thanks for the info. it helped solidify some thoughts I was having. ... and yes, stay home! who would want to give up all the conveniances of civilization to go hang out in the woods... for fun? For hiking a sleeping bag is lighter and smaller and is the way to go. But I have used a wet wool blanket to sleep in and was able to sleep , all though not to comfortable, all night when I drove my cabover camper in storming rain an the water hitting the front window over the bed was leaking in and wetting the wool blanket. If I only had a wet sleeping bag I would have had to stay awake I am sure.

Wool blankets are not a proper cold weather sleep system. One would need to harvest a extremely large amount of fire wood and be up most of the night tending the fire to be even slightly comfortable with a wool blanket as a sleep system. Every day of this camp would leave one more and more tired through work harvesting a large amount of fire wood and lack of proper sleep. Exhaustion is neither fun nor safe in cold temperatures.

Yahshua - you know Him as Jesus - was born to a virgin, turned water to wine, taught, healed the sick, raised the dead, casted out demons, walked on water, calmed the storm, and fed a crowd of thousands with a few fish and a few loaves of bread, among many other things. He was killed on the cross as payment for the sins of all mankind, three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus/God (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4). Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came in the flesh to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name!
if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. - Matthew 26:6-13
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.. ..
To anoint your self, the sick, or a building for spiritual protection:
Get a small bottle of olive oil and pour off a small amount into a smaller vessel like a vial or baby food jar. Use the rest of the bottle for cooking. Ask the Lord to bless your vial of oil in Jesus name. Anoint yourself with the oil by placing a dab of oil on tip of finger and touch it to your forehead, and ask the Lord to bless you/heal you. To anoint your home or other building: place a dab of oil on your finger and anoint the door posts and order all negativity and evil out of the house, and order that nothing negative or evil can enter into your home including piggybacking on a person entering, order it to be so in the name of Jesus. Anoint all potential entrances to your home. To anoint the sick: place oil on tip of finger and touch it to the head of the sick and say a prayer of healing over them in Jesus name. See James Chapter 5:14-15..... ......

this is where the interesting argument comes up.
people keep criticizing wool blankets as romanticized options, yet the whole concept of camping is a romantic notion in of itself.
where do you decide to draw the comfort line?
why build a tripod when you can slide one in your bed roll?
why not just bring a folding chair instead of looking for a stump?
Therefore, why bother with an expensive bag, when you can just strap on a few extra blankets?
seriously, unless you are a 4'7 anemic is there a real reason you are incapable of bringing 12lbs of bedding along?

Are you saying that in a hot tent with wool blankets you're still cold? What temperature can you get your hot tent up to on the coldest of nights? I'm new to hot tenting. Tried it out the other night. 0 degrees Fahrenheit, so it was super cold. But my little tent stove couldn't get the tent over 40 degrees ever and I was still cold inside my heavy duty sleeping bag. It was the Pomoly T1 mini. I'm thinking I need a bigger one for such cold nights.

    • @couragebushcraft2056
      @couragebushcraft2056  3 роки тому

I think that it comes down to a few factors, but in my experience the thickness of the tent material plays a key role in heat retention. Plus the Pomoly T1 mini is a small stove, so something with a larger surface area will put off more heat!

Wool blankets CAN be just as warm, if not warmer, than most appropriately rated sleeping bags BUT....there's a lot more work and knowledge involved for that to happen. Proper shelter, fire, etc
And, of course, heavier and bulkier.
But, yeah, anyone thinking they're going to tramp out in the snow and just throw a wool blanket over them like they're at home and going to be warm....🥶

    • @YankeeWoodcraft
      @YankeeWoodcraft 3 роки тому +2

@@pennsyltuckyreb9800 Yep, it all depends on the sleeping bag. Someone could have a heavier sleeping bag that's nowhere near as warm as a comparably weighted wool blanket depending on the material (goose vs synthetic).
But a good wool blanket is always warm when used right. In fact, I wouldn't say that it keeps you hot as much as it doesn't let you get cold which to me is what I prefer. I don't want to be hot on a cold night, I just don't want to be cold.

@@plumbus8363 I think most folks don't realize that you need an all night fire and proper shelter setup to make a wool blanket work in a Northern winter scenario. Otherwise, you're right, even a quality blanket like the HBC will not keep you warm all by itself.
Winter outings with a wool blanket is an entire thing that includes shelter, proper clothing, camp location, etc. It can be done and it can be Hella warm but it does require much more planning and work.
The warmest, quickest, lightest, and easiest setup will always be a tarp/poncho and appropriately rated sleeping bag with pad or natural bedding underneath you.
I split the difference for the best of both worlds. I have a -5° F synthetic sleeping bag plus a light, 2lb wool "patoo" from Afghanistan. The large wool shawl is great for added warmth while on the move but also doubles as a liner inside your bag to keep it cleaner, less stinkier, and bump up your bag's warmth rating.
If a nighttime fire is a must you could also just throw the patoo over the sleeping bag as well to help protect the bag from sparks.
