  • Here I go through the process of selecting anti-collision strobe lights for night time operations of my DJI Air 2S. I compare the Firehouse Technology arm mounting brackets with the AerialPixel topside battery mount.

I hung my strobe 2 in off the end of my drone, shining down is how I want it..made my own mount from a length of stiff wire, I bent it into a paper clip shape and attached to my drone with rubber bands, and the strobe is attached on the end with more rubber bands.. optimal visibility and I didn't want to block any of the sensors. Works great, if you have any skill at all don't waste your money buying a mount

IMO I would go with the top light. I like the fact you can't see it from the ground. I would think you can see the navigation lights.

Hey Tom, Most of my flights that I require lights for are at dusk where there is still some ambient light left. At this time of day I can be 250-350 AGL shooting a sunset and the nav lights are not that visible to my old tired eyes. The strobes really pop, so if I'm looking at my screen and then to the sky I can find the drone immediately. I even like the strobes during the day for that same reason, but as they say, to each his own and YMMV. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

Vifly for the WIN. TOP, NOT over the GPS. Air Craft are Above where your drone should be.

anti collision lights should be on top. it doesnt matter if you cant see the strobe when its up in the air. Its for other aircraft above you in the airspace. The drone navigation lights are for you to see on the ground

Depends on where you're flying where I am one of the drone pilot schools also does night flying classes one of the requirements are you have at least one anti-collision light that faces down that strobes or they will not allow you to fly during the night courses till you have one. it's more for other drone or UAV pilots than it is for manned aircrafts.

These drones are self balancing. Regardless where or what weight and placement doesn’t matter. Dji drones, that is. They are programmed to make up the difference, and will fix whatever weight difference, and will make change and spin the props to adjust for the balance and weight changed. So it wouldn’t matter, if or where you put it effects the weight or not. So I’m confused by this test, or what your test is teaching us. So yea of course calling the company, and asking about that , he gave you a response like that.

So the lights pre installed on a DJI mavic 3 aren't considered anti collision ?

    • @ChucksMagic

Nope, they're considered navigation lights and don't meet the 3 statue mile visibility requirement.

They're not considered anti-collision because they do not strobe although they do flash FAA requirements is that your anti-collision lights strobe or flash every 3/4 second or less.

@Rodger Hunter Interesting comment. below is part § 107.29 Operation at night and I don't see any requirement for the lighting to be on the top of the aircraft. I and many other pilots would be interested if you could cite what part of the regulations state they MUST be on the top.
      (a) Except as provided in paragraph (d) of this section, no person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system at night unless -
      (1) The remote pilot in command of the small unmanned aircraft has completed an initial knowledge test or training, as applicable, under § 107.65 after April 6, 2021; and
      (2) The small unmanned aircraft has lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles that has a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision. The remote pilot in command may reduce the intensity of, but may not extinguish, the anti-collision lighting if he or she determines that, because of operating conditions, it would be in the interest of safety to do so.
      (b) No person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system during periods of civil twilight unless the small unmanned aircraft has lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles that has a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision. The remote pilot in command may reduce the intensity of, but may not extinguish, the anti-collision lighting if he or she determines that, because of operating conditions, it would be in the interest of safety to do so.
      (c) For purposes of paragraph (b) of this section, civil twilight refers to the following:
      (1) Except for Alaska, a period of time that begins 30 minutes before official sunrise and ends at official sunrise;
      (2) Except for Alaska, a period of time that begins at official sunset and ends 30 minutes after official sunset; and
      (3) In Alaska, the period of civil twilight as defined in the Air Almanac.
      (d) After May 17, 2021, no person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system at night in accordance with a certificate of waiver issued prior to April 21, 2021 under § 107.200. The certificates of waiver issued prior to March 16, 2021 under § 107.200 that authorize deviation from § 107.29 terminate on May 17, 2021.

@@ChucksMagic while this regulation does not specifically state this, is in fact an FAA regulation on all aircraft as to where the location of anti-collision lights must be placed. ALL aircraft, not just drones, are required to have the lights installed on the tops of any aircraft, tower, or building so as it can be seen from and by other aircraft as this marks the top most position of the aircraft, tower, or building. If you have this on the bottom, it does absolutely no good to other aircraft as they will be unlikely to see the BOTTOM of your drone.

@@crazydpaintball No one seems to be able to cite the specific regulation that requires that a strobe be mounted on the top of your sUAS for night flight. That's because there is not one! It may be prudent to put a strobe on top of your drone, but not required by FAA regulation. I will certainly retract this statement if any one can cite a regulation that contradicts what I'm saying.

Not always, anti collision lights are only required when flying in civil twilight and at night. There is no reason you can't use them as anti collision and also as an aid to see your drone day or night.

What if the aircraft is an Air Ambulance taking off from below. The fact is that in order for an aircraft to hit your drone, they have to be at the same altitude not higher. Strobes mounted on the arms broadcast light in a 180 degree pattern so they can be seen from above, below and at the same altitude. Strobes can also aid you in seeing the drone. Nothing in part 107 says any different! Bottom line, if you want to mount your strobe on the top, knock yourself out!
