    As for Natural 1s. We were climbing across rigging to the enemy ship. I was trying to sneak, rolled a natural 1.... but got like a 28 on my Acrobatics.... So this cute rabbit swung across did a double somersault, landed shouting "TA DAAAA" .... JAZZ HANDS..... onto the deck of the enemy ship.
    Hillariously followed up by the centaur double criting his acrobatics to climb across....

      BTW I think this is doubly true for Social checks. I think a lot of the time it's more fun to ask the player what they want to achieve, roll for success and then roleplay the results. Players can be really creative when it comes to messing up conversations.

    I love when people science and magic at my table. Ex: occultist friend arguing with physics friend in character about lightning being able to effect ghosts is a beautiful thing. I don't think I'd have nearly as much fun if people didn't act like the universe was alive and just lumped along.

    On hiring mercenaries, twistedpint is right on the money by saying it's a mechanic for a reason.
    In my current campaign the party has managed to scrounge up enough money to commission an airship. We cannot crew a literal ship that needs a crew of 20 to operate with just our party of 5 so we've had to hire a mercenary company to give us that kind of manpower.
    A lot of it has been facilitated by the DM and airships are a whole theme of this campaign and we all cannot wait to set sail into the skies as players :)

And in the middle of a fort filled with recently freed slaves and dwarven soldiers in full view of everyone... That PC died.

    I'm up in the air about banning phones in sessions. MOST of my players are really good about paying attention in sessions and use their phones mostly to more efficiently look up spell effects or things like falling or such to take off some of my workload as DM. But one player in particular will read the news or books or watch videos whenever it isn't actively their turn in combat (even in roleplay) and then act while they have no idea what's going on (like walk over to our *hiding rogue* with a *lit torch* to stand next to him in a room full of enemies that aren't aware of the party yet), or even worse just flat out look up stat blocks for enemies and metagame.

  • @ninjabgwriter

    When I've had new players, I try to come up with one sentence descriptions of the class as a whole if it's not intuitive (like 'Monk is basically martial arts with some extra stuff' or 'barbarians are strong and often angry and good at hitting stuff' or 'wizards and sorcerers are similar but wizards do study and can learn a ton more spells and sorcerers do magic more based off of instinct and a theme and can alter spells in ways wizards can't'), and make suggestions based off of characters I know they like from other media, their interests, or video games they like to play. For instance, one of my players is very outdoorsy, loves nature documentaries, and knows a ton about camping and survival stuff, plus is an avid animal lover, so I recommend druid for their first character and worked together with them on what they'd like. They were way more excited about the ability to wildshape than cast spells, so that helped narrow down their subclass too.
    Character generation can be a bit daunting even if you're experienced and understand the game, but if you're new or trying out a class you've never played before or can be confusing and outright overwhelming. Knowing what someone is most looking forward to is also helpful, be it roleplay, exploration, combat, stealth, mystery solving, etc. And their attention span too. Someone who doesn't want to make a ton of decisions might enjoy a martial class more. All of the first characters I made with my party were full casters, and then when I was helping a player make a fighter for a second campaign, character creation was so relaxing it felt like we were cheating somehow or had missed something, but it was just that we didn't have to choose from like a million spells.

    For the record, casters have access to waaaaay easier WMD's in the form of spell tiles. Nothing like chaining X amount of fireballs together using a crossbow bolt to break the first tile to also set them all off while contained in a thin metal flask. Use a wax seal for the initial shot that way they detonate on impact.

    I'm kind of glad they added the Aim bonus action to Rogues. Rogues need the Sneak Attack to match other martials in damage. But the Hide issue comes up... Having the option to Aim but not being able to move kind of makes up for situations where hide doesn't make sense, while at the same time not just negating the Rogues damage.

    • @theuncalledfor
      @theuncalledfor Рік тому

      Remember that you can also Sneak Attack if an ally (who is not incapacitated) is within 5ft of the enemy. The ally need not be a party member, it can be a friendly NPC combatant or a summon. I don't think it even technically needs to be an ally - I think it can also be a mutual enemy. So long as it's a threat and provides a distraction.

    • @TheRodentMastermind
      @TheRodentMastermind Рік тому

      @@theuncalledfor Yep it just has to be an enemy to the person you are striking. The reason the Aim option was so important is Rogues rely on that single attack hitting. So getting Advantage is huge. They are also not really tough enough to survive in the front line, so running in and using a off hand weapon to guarantee the Sneak Attack (if you miss with your main attack) is not always viable.
      The Mobility Feat of course helps a lot with this as you don't need to use your bonus action to disengage which means the off hand becomes a lot less dangerous.

    If you're trying to keep the flow of the table going that's fine, but if this is because of some sense that "Well in combat you'd have to choose quickly" you also have to consider that if this were "real" your character would have dedicated hundreds of hours to practicing these spells.

    When it takes me longer it’s usually when I’m looking up what an edge case for a spell is. It interacts in a special way with some bit of rules and gotta figure out how that is. If I think it works a particular way that is a bit edge I want to make sure both I and the GM align on how it’s going to work and that I’m not, for lack of a better term, ‘cheesing’. Fortunately we have a rules maven who will usually give the answer for the asking. To me ‘rules maven’ is the positive version of a rules lawyer.

    I got sick and tired of other players taking 5 - 10 minutes on their turns. So when I started doing, I made the rule that if you haven't taken an action within two minutes I give them a slow 5 second count. If at the end they still haven't taken any action (attack, spell, move, something) I skip their turn. This has forced my players to pay attention to what is going on and have several things to do when their turn comes around.

    4:18 I have a relatively old idea of using something along the line of "of course I can create an alchemist's fire, it's a common knowledge; why can't you do it?" I don't know what exactly it will be all about (probably some sorcerer or arteficer and flavour for some cantrip, but I don't know what the actual backstory will be), but... I will pull it out at one point. (It refers to some irl stuff I don't really want to get into, but most people I may play with will get it.)
    7:36 our DM goes out of his way not to implement gunpowder into his world, while it wouldn't be either game-breaking (we do some pretty power-creep homebrew stuff anyway) or super out of place. I get the idea that in a high-magic world there is not a lot of requests for non-magical alternatives, but in some cases it just looks as a bit of a stretch.
    10:05 isn't it raw? I mean, some may argue that a high-level rogue should be able to pull it out because realism is long forgotten at this point, but I feel like it may be introduced like a homebrew ability, not as a ruling.
    11:46 I guess they could hire someone to take care of some problems they don't have time to solve (and DM didn't prepare yet because players declared to go one way and hire someone to take care of the other). Unless there are no meaningful choices in the game, which... Well, it isn't railroading (some people go berserk when others call it like that), and it may be totally fine for you, but for me personally it sounds kinda sad.

    For the charcater sheet thing totally agree with the player needing to put in the work to make the character,
    Also as for the infinite hp thing i found a homebrew for a lich pc build that would let you just revive after a few days if you died so its not as perminate as "that character is dead make a new one" since it can be annoying to put alot of work into a pc just for it to die session one.
    As for the chemist thing i feel like alot of people go for overkill rather then just making smoke bombs, invisible ink and other utility type stuff thats maybe more useful and less likely to blow you up if you take fire damage.

    The three times rule I have always applied in my games, and I tell everyone ahead of time about this. You say it once haha it's a joke, twice it's a warning, three times you did it.
    Two other rules I always have. 1. if you are a prepared caster that needs a spell list ahead of time you present it to me after your rest. I have had too many players play clerics and wizards but treat them as spontaneous casters with every spell as their known list, just looking through the books to find the right spell for any situation. No. Stop it.
    2. Are you sure? If the party or a PC is going to do something really dumb and I mean beyond lack of common sense I ask them "Are you sure?" and give them that one chance to step back and think about it. If they say yes well not my fault.
    Example of this, rogue player "I'm going to go up to the drunk gladiator and kick him in the balls, that'll get me respect."
    Me "Are you sure you want to do that? There are five others around him, all respect him, and you just saw someone bump him and get smashed into a wall. Are you sure?"
    Rogue "Yes!"
    A few rolls later.
    Rogue "Why are they all fighting me? This makes no sense!"

    When I play a spellcaster, I spend the entire time from when I finish my turn thinking of my next turn, and listening to what everyone else is doing to see if I have to adjust my strategy. I hear a lot of people talk about how combat in D&D 5e is snappier and more fluid than other systems, so maybe it's our inexperience, but we've only recently gotten to a point where we can run multiple combat encounters a session. To be entirely honest, combat can feel a bit like a chore sometimes, though we have had a few standout sessions that were a ton of fun. I like it when we have a plan and get to do cool strategies, but casting the same cantrip for every turn over 2 hours isn't exactly super enjoyable... honestly though it could be that my DM's module is whacked out. I recently found out that it does encounters radiantly by adding X enemies per player, which led us to have to fight 30 ORCS IN ONE ENCOUNTER. AT LEVEL THREE. If our wizard hadn't sent in his familiar charged with Dragon's Breath we all would've died. Half of us were squishes, and that was our only AOE at the time. (This is DoIP, and I cannot understand for the life of me WHY it does encounters radiantly, I ran LMoP and it wasn't like that, every encounter was fixed. I feel like if they were going to adjust encounters per number of PCs, they should have a stock number of henchmen and then a few more powerful enemy variants to bring some variety and still challenge a large party.)
    Also as an aside, does the balance of spellcasters and martials ever feel off to anyone else too? It feels like casters always have a million things to keep track of, and most martials can do like three things. I kind of feel like martials should get more maneuver type things just in general, or advantages of certain weapons over others that aren't just different dice sizes, but... idk, giving spears reach and making it so you can do stuff like brace against an enemy coming at you, or make it hard for an enemy to get within 5 feet of you, or like daggers having a boost to hit because they can slip into the gaps in armor even though they only do a d4, war hammers having a stagger effect, etc. Making it possible to do stuff like kneecapping someone with a mace to reduce their speed by 10 ft. Ray of Frost is a cantrip and does basically the same thing for free. Fireball, in a densely packed battlefield, could hit like 16 medium combatants at once, doing 8d6s of damage to each of them even at the lowest level. I get that it's literally magic, but IMO it doesn't really feel unbalanced or like cheating to let martials shine more.

    You know... When it comes to spells making sense in a situation, I don't think it would be out of the realm of possible to give a spell damage if used with some ingenuity.
    Example: create/destroy water already does damage to water creatures (like water elemental) so why not just choose a lesser type of damage?
    But also consider that I can have secondary effects like causing things become exponentially more flammable or allowing a fire elemental to dash as a bonus action.
    We can be flexible :)

    • @theuncalledfor

      Create Or Destroy Water does not deal damage to "water creatures" in 5e, unless you have proof to the contrary. Homebrew is valid in actual practical play, but does not count for discussions outside any specific game.
      Neither the spell description nor the description of a water elemental contain any verbiage about this spell being able to deal damage. Are you talking about a different system? Pathfinder, DnD 3.5e, etc.?

      PIck an easy class (like fighter) while you're first starting so you can have more time to focus on learning the rules (both game rules and house rules). Then work your way up to more complex classes once you have the basics down. It makes things so much easier, both in character creation and in actual play. Fighters mechanically are pretty boring, but that just means you get a chance to also focus on making an exciting character through roleplay instead of mechanics :) The absolute best advice, though, is just have fun!

    • @theuncalledfor
      @theuncalledfor Рік тому +1

      Ignore the other guy and pick whatever sounds the most fun. Learn the rules, read your spells (if any), read your abilities, and have _fun._
      IF you choose to pick an easy class first just because you wanna get more familiar with the core rules and the game's concept first, make sure you either want to play that character for an entire campaign, or play a one-shot/mini campaign first. Getting stuck playing a character you don't like for a major campaign sounds like agony. Alternatively, make it clear that this character will only be with the group for a short time, and that your real character joins up with the group later.

Ok party wants to carry a powder keg well then one PC has to carry it, any roll that means an attack might miss that PC has a second 3 dice roll on hitting the bomb. Leaves the option for creative shenanigans open to the players but also introduces consequences for trying.

I am really sick of people doing this "Lets make encounter in area with no cover so Rogue is useless" "Why are you not fighting the guy, he is right there" kind of bullshit. Its like "Your wizard walks into a room, the doors seal and now there is anti magic zone, so you can't cast spells". And they always get upset when you don't walk into it, and you can't be creative and just trow down some rubble or smoke bombs without being considered blind or getting your hand blown off for no real reason.
    I mean you can fix that problem in higher levels, bu you just don't get to higher levels most of the time.

  • @VestedUTuber
    @VestedUTuber Рік тому

    Ok, just to comment on the whole "using real world science in a medieval fantasy setting to break things" thing, it's a little disingenuous to claim that it's impossible. After all, they figured out things like trebuchets, balista and, in the case of the Korean Empire, _Multiple Rocket Launcher Systems_ (look up the Hwacha) in that era. So there's some crazy stuff you can pull off with just medieval tech, and in a medieval fantasy setting you could push things significantly further with just a little magic. Even so, I do agree there needs to be limits to that. The tech might be there but the knowledge and material resources to use it to its full potential probably isn't. So no medieval Saturn Vs, stick to spelljammers if you absolutely must go to space for some reason. Your "machine gun train" example is a good example of something that's possible tech-wise in a medieval fantasy setting, but not resource-wise, at least not without the backing of local nobility. So if you're going to build a medieval rail line, it should be a significant long-term campaign goal, not the party artificer's weekend project.

    • @lootgoblinmarketplace
      @lootgoblinmarketplace  Рік тому +1

      I think that’s a good way to balance it. I think the assumption that the artificer should be able to easily recreate or implement real world science with a minder understanding is what we were more talking about. I’ve run into a player wanting to make powerful and kingdom crippling tech day one. If you artificer has to make more incremental breakthroughs and get rare components and expertise of others that they should be able to long-term make something powerful.
