They were helping him. He was a dumb shit that didn't get all of his research completely in order, and instead did his work as it happened. Although it's a fast track to experience science, it's also the most dangerous, not only to yourself but to others. Which is exactly why the environmental agencies needed to intervene to keep him from doing too much damage.
@Noruzenchi86 Welp, maybe if actually lived in a free society, he wouldn't of had to work in such conditions. Also, f*ck the 'environmental protection' agencies. They once tried to fine a man for obstructing a river with 'wood debris'. Turns out it was beavers. Also, I don't know how you think you can protect the environment by creating infinite amounts of debt. That money eventually ends up buying products for the employees of said government agencies, thus taking ever more out of the environment. Infinite amounts of monopoly money, finite amounts of resources (or at least resources that can be reasonably brought to bear). THINK.
@@TarsonTalon You should dig more on that story. When the police arrested him, his face was full of sores produced by radiation exposure. And in the video itself, they say that David basically shut down communication with anyone and thus no one could have helped him OR prevent him from killing himself with radiation. Police shutting him down was actually the only thing that reached to him and extended his life to 39 years instead of dying from radiation induced cancer.
Terry At the time, he would have lived longer if he was supported because the distinct lack of support got him his drinking problem that killed him at 39. If he was assisted by the government to get a job in radiology and nuclear reactors, he could have been provided with hazmat suits and other methods of defense against radiation. Or at least a job in teaching about chemistry, instead of being turned into a freak by the government doing nothing. If he died of natural causes, having died of "old age" at 39, then your point would be valid. But the validity is removed by that he killed himself with alcohol poisoning, as mentioned in the video at 9:18.
I met him actually, sorry to hear he passed away. I randomly got a ride with him in a taxi from the airport when we were both stationed in Norfolk, on the USS Enterprise. I was a Nuclear Electrician at the time, ironically he was unable to get into the Navy Nuclear program, he was clearly a bright guy. We were both Eagle Scouts and he told me about the incident. He even showed me a newspaper clipping that mentioned the incident, which I probably wouldn't have believed him if he didn't have, having a pretty good handle on what is needed to make a nuclear reactor. For not being a Navy Nuke, he had a pretty good grasp on the science and physics involved. I don't think the idea of neighbors seeing a green glow is very realistic. He told me that he got caught after he had became concerned with the safety of the project and was attempting to dismantle it. He had already disposed of the majority of the nuclear material and was spotted loading a large number of tires that he had been using as radioactive shielding into his car and had the police were called to investigate. A lot of the other stuff he mentioned as well, such as collecting ore (which is common on the shores of the great lakes) to attempt to extract the U235/8 and roaming around with his geiger counter hoping to find radioactive material. He told me he hit the jackpot one day when his geiger counter spiked and it lead him to a old clock that had a vial of radium inside it, presumably to repaint the hands.
Hey of your a scout then you should have seen in the beginning that the uniform is wrong and the cerchief is the wrong color there was no senior patrol patch or any merit badges or sash if he were going for eagle and there was no rank one him
unshapened python I meant government recruited him as nuclear specialist or something that contributed into nuclear technology, and no, he didn't get recruited, he only enlisted as navy.
I think if they did a video focusing on nuclear fission/fusion, they'd have to do it on the entire reactor as fission and fusion are actually 'simple' concepts to explain. Nuclear fission is essentially just throwing particles at uranium (or another suitable material, such as plutonium or thorium so long as it is unstable enough to sustain a chain reaction) to trigger a nuclear chain reaction which is what releases the energy we harness. The nuclear chain reaction is just a series of nuclei being split by launched particles from other split nuclei.
I expected David to be hired by some nuclear reactor development companies but I was bummed out. Also what the frick with those paranoid people in his school.
Normal people like us, you and me... are actually PRETTY TERRIBLE. And when somebody is different (and most likely better) we shun them INSTINCTUALLY. Like...why?
Too bad the government didn't take him in and begin to teach him. He could have become a great scientist and asset. Instead they threw him aside after destroying what he saw as his whole life, leaving him depressed with no purpose in life. He was a gifted individual treated like a terrorist from those who were to ignorant and closed minded to see his genius. Point is, I am not surprised the government and local small town people treated him this way till he took his own life through alcohol.
Are saying they should have left him with his lab and let him die early anyway? His passion was nuclear power but he had been exposed to it far too long to pursue a career in it
@ allwhoplay He started this as a child boy scout in a small town when he started this, do you know all the laws for such research in this day and age? Especially back in 80s - 90s when you can't just google any of what he did. I know that must blow your mind that there was a time before the internet where you can look any of those laws and facts up.
he approached the DOE,NRC,the american nuclear society, the edison electric institute and atomic industrial forum he may not known have the laws but they probably did he didnt need the internet he had those companys to get the laws from
He build a nuclear reactor to get Eagle Scout status... that's some serious devotion to eagle scout hood. Wow 315 likes, didn't think this comment would blow up so fast :)
I have nothing on that David, but I blew the neighbor's car door off with a homemade RPG when I was 14. I built it out of my old 3 stage model rocket and some old 4 inch pvc pipe. I just loaded the final stage with a metal tube packed with a black powder, lamp oil, & crushed rocket motor fuel dry paste capped off by the half of a shotgun shell with powder and primer. A nail mounted through the nose cone struck the primer to detonate it. I bought the largest size rocket motors I could buy for the lower stages and the launch button taped to the pipe. I fired at a piece of plywood but it went ballistic and found a neighbor's Grand Am instead. It was the coolest and most painfully punished thing I have ever done.
I remember when I was also 14. I tried to make a homemade nitroglycerin. I had to bought a bottle of toilet cleaner, glycerin from the local drug store and I had to stole some industrial disinfectant that is kept somewhere at my cousin's basement. I loaded the finished product in a can and try to detonate it. It sure is the loudest explosion that I ever heard, its so loud, police had came over to where I detonated my nitroglycerin. Luckily I immediately flee out Of the scene before the police arrived....
I made a works bomb once and while I was waiting behind a boulder for it to go boom, my brother picked it up accidentally and put it in the shed where we kept fireworks and ammo for our hunting rifles. After 30 seconds the biggest explosion i've ever heard blasted that she'd to pieces and lit up the night sky.
David Johnston That’s nothing when I was 14 I literally blew up my neighbors house and destroyed about 1.3 million dollars worth of property and blamed it on the school bully, and currently he’s in a juvenile detention center till 18, and after he will go to jail for life and his family is now homeless because they had to sell everything they own to pay the damages and now I’m a hero for some reason 😂😂👌👌🅱️🅱️💯💯😩😩👌👌😤😤🙅🏻♂️🙅🏻♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️😱😱🅱️🅱️😍😍😑😑🤔🤔😸😸😭😭😎😎😇😇

I’m just so surprised that people are criticizing the scientists for helping keep him and the others around him safe.
@@fantasticgames7603 Im pretty sure he is dead. In fact, he is dead. Look it up. Also if he was his grandson and Albert was in his 40's he wouldn't be his great great great grandson.
I couldn't imagine being smart enough to pull this off, especially as a teenager! However, I can understand the rage he felt after all his work was trashed. I assume this was a big factor in his depression, and ultimately his death. I feel very sorry for him and his family. It's a real gut punch to lose someone so brilliant. He might have gone off to create something that would've significantly helped humans.
@@Aiden-Ed those arent that dangerous as opposed to other more deadly elements, such as polonium, plutonium, radioactive cesium, etc. He also wasnt trying to hurt anyone
Connor McGregor it doesn’t matter that there are more dangerous elements, the point that he had them at all was bad. Not even considering that what he was doing with them was straight up illegal.
Eros Matthew Montallana He apparently had a lot, considering that he bought hundreds of clocks and lamps to get enough to power a small reactor. And just because we can own firearms does not mean we can make a whole nuclear reactor at around 16 years old, we can’t own firearms at 16 either. The reactor wasn’t maintained by anyone with the ability to keep it under control, not even mentioning that he was a 16 year old doing it because he wanted to. It was a danger to him and the surrounding area, there was a reason why he got in trouble with the police. (Also I’m tired of talking about this over-exposed kid)
I hate how if anyone speaks out from the "normal" way humans are supposed to live, they get shot down and sent into depression. I understand it could have gone wrong, but the kid clearly knew what he was doing.
Oh yeah, hunting down Uranium. He's lucky he wasn't labeled a terrorist. I mean really, how could you not know this was going to end badly? He knew this was stuff only top scientists, military, and government officials were supposed to be involved with. One mistake and he could've killed or poisoned himself and potentially others. The kid is lucky he wasn't arrested.
He didn't. Read any book on the subject. He very nearly killed himself and his family at the MINIMUM, as he was just a few days from creating a small scale meltdown and release of massive amounts of radiation.
You should dig more on that story.
"the kid clearly knew what he was doing" Haha, no. Thinking you can single-handedly build a breeder reactor at the hobbyist level, with a teenager's resources and judgment, and believing it won't end up being a radiological disaster is not a sign of someone who "knew what they were doing." It's the sign of an idiot taking stupid risks that, in a bad scenario, could ruin or prematurely end a lot of people's lives. It's lucky that he got caught and shut down before things went any further, and it would have been better if he's been prevented from starting down that road at all.
Would have been interesting if they hired him. They destroyed his site and he went intone deep depression, than seems to have slowly rotted in the navy sadly. He served, which is great, but perhaps never got past his loss.

He managed to do all that without internet and at his age.
I guess that determination knows no boundaries.
So the David was a genius he could have become a good scientist, the government should have helped him.
All science comes with risk. Some of the greatest discoveries we've made have been done with similar recklessness.

Felix Frost he died in 2016 so you probably read it before he died
@Dhruv Patel He said he heard of him years ago. Of course he read it before he died?
As a Boy Scout, I believe that THIS MAN IS A LEGEND!

I'm fascinated by nuclear power ⚡🔋 and I was wondering if you could do a video on nuclear fission and fusion.
Fusion is more effective that fission. Fusion has no waste I think.
Fusion *fuses* atoms. Fission splits atoms

Luckily I immediately flee out

If your interested in this kinda stuff its pretty simple but it still takes a shit ton of work

He had really dangerous elements.

Esoteric Emissary finally someone here has a brain
He didn't. Read any book on the subject. He very nearly killed himself and his family at the MINIMUM, as he was just a few days from creating a small scale meltdown and release of massive amounts of radiation.
You should dig more on that story.
"the kid clearly knew what he was doing"
Haha, no.
I did too.
But I failed on the start.
Would have been interesting if they hired him. They destroyed his site and he went intone deep depression, than seems to have slowly rotted in the navy sadly. He served, which is great, but perhaps never got past his loss.
it wouldve been interesting if he did the work and went to school for it and was legally allowed to do it
A good point for safety precautions. He seemed like one of those individuals that learns more outside of school than in school.
I think his depression came from all his hard work being destroyed.
