This is a thing newer mopar vehicles do. My 2017 jeep gc, 2020 jeep gc, and my 19 ram 1500 have all done it after jump starting due to a completely or near completely dead battery. Dealer says it's due to all the "low voltage" alarms in the ecu/bcm, etc. Basically let it sit for a while until the battery's charged and then restart the vehicle and it'll go out of limp mode.

Dude yes this happened to me last winter. My truck looks exactly like yours same year, color and everything. I know I didn't leave anything on. Luckily when mine happened I work right next to the dealership and didn't have to drive far. The dealership was stomped and acted like a low battery should not do that other stuff and not let it shift. They charged the battery and reset the light and said something about it needing a update that shouldn't allow the truck to do that with a low battery. They would not replace the battery because after charging it they said it passed and wasn't bad. They did a load test and nothing was draining it they said. So I still till this day don't know what happened. I kept an eye on it a few weeks after with my multimeter and it seemed like the battery was still starting to get low on volts like 11.9 ish in that area. So I charged it back up myself and stopped using some features by turning some things off seeing if anything changed. So I don't know if this was the problem or not I stopped using my electronic emergency break. My driveway has a incline so I set that electronic break on at night. After I stopped using that I have not had that problem and that was last winter and I still have the same battery. I haven't checked the volts with my multimeter in awhile so I'm not sure if they are up or not but who knows. It did suck though.

I had the same exact truck as you except silver. My battery died(no clue why) but it was dead dead and I needed a new battery. It died 1.5 years into owning. Dealership warranty towed it and put a new battery in. I had a 4x4 issue after that. The 4wd buttons when pressed would operate but the 4wd drivetrain would not shift into gear and would say it needed to be serviced. electronics and power…. Dealership ended up upgrading my ecu/tcu. I posted on 5thgenrams about my issue. Could be that same!?

Haven’t replaced my battery in the three years that I own my truck. I think it’s time to replace it after seeing this video. I believe they programmed the trucks to stay in first gear while in low Power mode to keep the transmission from possibly being damaged if the vehicle somehow completely loses power. It’s just a theory 🤷‍♂️….. good video have a good one Truck Central🔥🔥🔥

That is exactly what my son‘s truck is doing. It’s a 2019 dodge ram with a V6 and he came out of Kroger‘s the other day and it would not start. I had to call AAA AAA to get it jumped using their super power jumper. Jumping it with another car did not work. Anyway, it would not shift out of first gear driving home so we have a new battery and we’re going to replace it tomorrow.

Great video, I had this problem 2 days ago with my Ram TRX . It’s not shifting from the first gear i found your UA-cam video and I drove it to the next battery shop about 3 miles away. I replaced the battery with a new one that has 100 amp. But did not do any thing I called a flat truck to deliver my Truck home . Next day I tried to disconnect the truck bed wiring from the battery and then problem solved. I am released now. Thank you man.

I have the 2019 Ram limited and last weekend I pulled my truck out to the driveway to wash it. Started to dry it off and noticed the rear of the truck was in the highest mode and the front was in the lowest. Went to to start it - truck was dead, everything locked up. The E-break locked up and all error messages you got, I got as well. Checked the voltage and it was at 9.5 volts. Threw the charger on it to get it fully charged and bam, everything finally reset. Dealership said that if voltage drops below 12, this will happen. Long story short, new battery- its all good. Count on every 3 years to change the battery. My thoughts are, even when the truck is shut down- it's still feeding all the electronics in this truck!!! I did not experience the 1st gear issue while driving it to the dealership.

    Hi Everyone,
I know this thread is old but for anyone who recently had the same issue i can share what the resolution was for me.
My battery died on my 2021 ram and when I replaced it, i went to the dealer to clear the code and they could not get it to stay clear.
After I dropped the truck off and they spent more time looking into the issue they learn that it was a connection lose between the abs systems and others that was causing this issue.
I ended up with a $100 fix for needing to upgrade my battery.

Been there done that with my 2019 Ram 1500. Always check your batteries cranking amps vs what it should be. New battery was the answer. Also, when jump starting your truck never have the other vehicle running while you start yours. On board computer systems do not like that.

I had a similar experience with my 2019 Big Horn. Not frequently, but more than once. Not related to dead batteries or jump starts. It simply didn't want to shift after coming to a dead stop. I have always been able to pull over and shift to park, then back to drive and it cleared up. I've also been able to clear it by manually incrementing the gears. Never made sense, and I never found a root cause. Just traded it for a 2022 Limited, so fingers crossed that the electronics in the new one are more stable. This is my seventh RAM truck. It's a love / hate relationship.

Next time unhook the negative terminal on the battery for about 5 minutes then hook the terminal back up. To speed it up u can also turn ur lights on after disconnecting the negative terminal. Honestly, it's not huge, easy to fix. Always remember anything electronic number 1 first thing to try is a power cycle. And in terms of a vehicle that means completely removing the power source to the ECM. What fixed it here wasn't the battery IMHO but the act of unplugging the battery and taking power away from the ECM when u changed it.

I did have this happen to my 2019 Laramie. I did all the same things you did, initially. Powered down, started, put it in drive, wouldn't come out of 1st. 3 times. Then I tried shifting manually. It worked. I parked it, put it back into automatic and it worked like it was supposed to. The only warning light I had that was similar was the traction control.

Justin, You and I have almost identical trucks only mine is white and we deleted the sunroof. 2019 RAM 1500 Limited, crewcab, 5.5 foot box, RAM boxes, 4x$, Hemi, etc.. I had a very similar problem when the truck was brand new. Somehow the battery got discharged to the point I needed a jump start from AAA.
After the start many of the icons/apps on the display just disappeared. It was a cold day but the heated seats and steering wheel not only wouldn't work, the icons to activate them were AWOL. It was a Sunday so no dealer support. The lady on the RAM 1-800 number suggested I go for a drive preferably on a highway to charge the battery.
I did this, and guess what? It worked. After an hour of highway cruising, everything was back to normal.
The next day I took it to the dealer, they tested the battery, and it failed right away. My truck had been built with a dud battery. It was replaced under warrantee.
I spoke with the mechanic. He explained that the systems attempt to protect the truck and occupants from harm when something has gone wrong. A discharged or partially charged battery is about the worst possible case for onboard electronics. Not having heated seats on a cold day is a bummer :) but consider if the safety functions like AEB or Lane Keep or ....... are compromised. Easy to understand why it would choose to keep you in first gear.
Since them we have had zero issues with this truck. Love it to bits.

  • @Crocodile_Performance
    @Crocodile_Performance 2 роки тому +4

When the battery dies the truck software reverts back to a base model temporarily. All the lights will come on and make it look like a major issue. The truck has your settings and truck specs saved somewhere (on the cloud or internally I’m guessing). It takes a long time for your truck features and settings to upload and go back to normal on its own. I think your tune could be the reason for the truck not shifting. I never had it stay in 1st gear. My truck is stock with a pedal commander. A few times after a jump the truck would accelerate very slowly even when I floored it. I jumped out. Turned the truck off. Removed the pedal commander…then the truck started driving normal. All the lights and chaos were still on. After a few hours the truck finished uploading my features and went back to normal. I reinstalled my pedal commander and it started working fine.

This happened to me the week of July 4th, 2023. I have a Ram 1500 5.7L 4x4 bighorn quad cab. I ran the truck for several days using a jump pack (when the battery was too dead to start the truck) and found that you cannot jump this truck without first disconnecting the battery and draining any residual energy by attempting to start the truck with the battery disconnected. If you do, it won't shift. If your battery is dead enough to fail to start on the 1st attempt, it will not shift out of first. You HAVE to disconnect the battery and drain before you jump it. It was pretty frustrating.

We had no warning signs before hand but came out after the game (10pm) hit the start button, there was a loud pop, dash went crazy and the truck went dark for several seconds. Power comes back up, no errors or messages. Tried the start button again with the same result. Finally had it towed to the dealer. Long store short it was a dead battery. Now it looks like even if I had jumped it there was now way I could have got it home until I put a new battery in it.

I had wondered if it is a sensor problem, but low voltage in the sensor sounds about right! I've seriously thought about installing a more heavy duty battery than the original factory... as it always seems that the factory batter is made to go out sooner!

I had a 2019 ram, though I didn't have this problem. I had several problems, they were so bad that chrysler customer service told me to stop calling. And before you ask, they did not fix them. After several trips to the dealer for repairs, they could not find what was wrong, though the truck showed a communication problem between all of the computers. Chrysler insisted that there was nothing wrong, but I would constantly have issues that were related to the t.m.p. module. I would suggest that you take your truck to the dealer and ask them to check the history and reset the system so you have a better chance of the problem being fixed.

I can take the shift knob v. lever... but not having the ability to actually shift manually whatsoever sucks. Happened to me with a low mileage 2020 Ram 1500 where it stuck in 1st gear and wouldn't shift. I had to pull over, turn the truck off and back on to clear it. Had nothing to do with battery and never re-occurred. Software... does amazing things in vehicles, but also is a plague.

My 19' did it as well. The mechanic disconnected the positive and negative battery cables. He shorted those cables together for a few seconds to clear out all the trouble codes keeping it in limp mode, we charged the battery up. then he hooked them back on the battery normally. It started again and was fine, but it freaked me out so I replaced the battery anyways.

This afternoon my wife went to start her 19 1500 Laramie and it was dead. She was finally able to get it started and took it to the auto parts place to check the code and it says P1DF3 which seems to have something to do with the gearshift selector assembly. Her truck actually still has the original battery and 46000 miles which I can’t believe. She didn’t tell me the code until she got home and they didn’t replace the battery. Tomorrow I’ll go get a new battery and hope that fixes the problem. She was planning to drive to Florida tomorrow for Thanksgiving but she’s just going to take my Rebel instead. We’re a RAM family. Happened to me multiple times. I was running the Edge Tuner in my 19' 1500. You need to check if there's an update for the diablo. Once updated it should stop happening. If not you may need to send the pcm back to diablo for the update. But I guarantee once you take that tuner out, it stops happening. Good luck, great to have a tuner but not worth the headache sometimes. Haven't gotten one for my 21' 1500 because of that reason.

My 2019 Laramie is experiencing the exact issues. I replaced the battery and it now has a random parasitic draw on the batter that is severe enough to drain a completely charged battery in 8 hrs. The alternator checked out fine and the truck has been left at the dealership until they can "catch" the random draw occurring. After 2 weeks, the dealership informed me that they believe the passenger side mirror is causing the issue. I'm hoping they are not just firing the parts cannon at it and hoping this fixes it.

I had the same model and year. It happened to me same issue once 2020 when I was on high way at 100 km/h( The mileage was just 40K km and one year old ) . Then I pulled over and shut the engine. 2 mints later, restarted. issue disappeared truck was running as usual. went to dealer, I could not show the real issue to dealer. no any alarm lights on. I was told the shop computer did not read out any errors. I put approximately 80K kms before the truck written off Aug 28, 2021( was driving on highway). I did call FCA, they were not even interested in listening what happened what observed prior getting fired. simply told me contact my insurance company and my VIN was not on the recall list. then few questions asked FCA, they just repeated to me dealing with insurance company. I am sure the 2019 RAM limited with 5.7L e torch still not on the fire recall list. short google found only diesel models on the list. We were lucky me and passengers had the time to get off the truck. It took about 5 mints from I pulled the truck to the shoulder to completely covered by flame. fire fighters came, the fire almost done.

I used the key to open the door and the alarm goes off. So I pulled the negative lead off the battery . I go in the house to see if I have a remote battery, and I do not. I pull the battery from the remote clean it and put it back in. I put the lead back on the battery, get in the truck and it starts. From inside I shut it off, use remote start it it locks the doors and starts. I operate the locks with the remote. So I figure it is good. I run to the store and back no problem. This morning same issue except the remote operates the locks, but the truck does not start, or go into accessories mode.

Went to autozone to turn in old battery and when I started it back up, old settings came back on the screen (first start with the new batt it looked like it went to factory settings, different color etc) and voltage went to 11.9 (normal 14) disconnected battery and waited an hour same thing. Make sense that the high rpms and safety features locked in remember you have a generator in the truck now so it’s not your standard alternator big difference more power and more current that needs consistent flow so as a fail safe the high rpm’s will create the electric current needed to maintain the consistent power needed to create a charge until battery change your warning signs are the same as the old school check for a dead alternator in this case just the dead battery

I've had my 2019 Ram 1500 laramie almost 4 years, and it has been with this issue, due to the Columbus. Ohio chrysler dealership not knowing what's wrong. They keeps my vehicle several times for several weeks and still diagnosed it as nothing is wrong! It's been a roller coaster! If you find out what this issue is, please let me know.
