I was just told that I have COPD. I could believe it because the symptoms begin only 2 months ago. I'm 66 and very active until these last 2 months! I thought I had a chest cold! Excellent video if I do have COPD!

Thank you for NOT playing music in the background. I find drums beating, symphonies, horns, and the loud music very distracting from the message on many of these videos and turn them off.

Absolutely, I don't see why they always add stuff like that.

I gave up smoking 15 years ago I'm 53 now and have 44% lung function. Everything thing the doc says is manageable for me but my biggest win probably comes from the purchase of a cross trainer. To start with I managed just 5 minutes a day but now I can push out nearly 45 minutes daily, the important thing here is to have it in my home so no excuses about going outside in poor weather etc and believe me it makes the biggest difference but you have to be motivated to do it. What's the alternative? Any exercise no matter how little will always help, I was really bitter about contracting this hellish condition but what's the point in that nobody forced me to smoke so just make the best of what time I have left and keep fighting back. I do however feel that tobacco companies are essentially evil and at the very least they owe me for the cost of a cross trainer and a pair of lungs a plague on all of their houses

Recently diagnosed with COPD FEV1=45%. Due to diagnosis 15 years ago of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and exercise intolerance, exercise for me beyond mild level is just not possible. But I m learning to focus on being as active as I can plus follow my new drug protocols, which also includes drugs for recent heart attack. Hey, getting old is no fun.

Like me, you probably have a food allergy that's causing the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I suggest you experiment by eliminating foods. My problem is milk.

My Dr. told me don't smoke and take your meds. I know that is important and I follow that.
I asked him if he thought nutrition was important. He said not really but added basic nutrition, 4 food groups you can follow.
First of all, I never had weight issues but I find it difficult to exercise but now I'm learning exercises and have built myself up so that I feel stronger. I know that if I eat as good as I can and keep my weight down I feel much better. Than I asked about exercise and he said of course it's good but he doesn't put a big emphasis on that.
I've found walking and different exercise to be my saving grace and just helps me feel better.
I hope you have time to address my questions as my Dr is a specialist in pulmonary diseases. Sometimes I'm not feeling to confident as I know I'm not a Dr but I go by how I feel and then listening to your video you seem to feel nutrition and exercise are valuable with this problem.

Wonderful suggestions! I personally use the BreatheEasy Lung Exerciser to strengthen muscles and open airways. I keep one on my bathroom sink and another in my car so it’s also convenient to use.

Good advice. But I'm surprised he didn't recommend that patients ask their doctors about getting a spacer (a chamber that makes it much, much easier to administer albuterol and Combivent).
I'm an RN who has had many COPD patients. The spacer actually would have been #1 on my list of 10 tips.

I liked most of your video - except suggestion of microwaved meals. I do understand many are unable to cook, but feel a simple 'healthy' home-made meal would be far better/nutritious - especially fresh vegetables which are good for lungs. Plus a daily amount of 'friendly bacteria' - as in bio-yogurt and the such. There should be more Swimming Clubs specifically for patients with C.O.P.D.

It amazes me that friends and family still smoke after they see how difficult having copd is to cope with. I guess they're brain dead to think it won't happen to them possibly. I guess I was the same way when I wouldn't put down cigs. Paying for it now. Life not so great when you can't breath easily, making everything difficult. My copd didn't kick in until 20years after I gave up the nasty 3pks a day. STOP SMOKING, DONT START.

I get better results with Symbicort than I ever got with Advair. Different glucocorticoid, different long-acting Beta2 agonist, but it's in the form of a fine mist or vapor rather than a dry powder, so it can go much deeper into my lungs. Most of the Advair powder never makes it past the back of my tongue.

    it more difficult to breath.

You know what irritates me. The #1 recommendation when you have COPD is to stop smoking. I have never smoked a single cig. in my life and have never lived with a smoker. #2 recommendation is exercise. I am a very active person, fit. They act as if only smokers have this and only sedentary people. Wrong.

Gayle, I tried to quit smoking for at least 30 years. I was a 2 pack a day smoker & tried a stop smoking clinic, hypnosis, acupuncture, welbrutin, Chantix, the patches. Nothing worked. I got pneumonia and almost died and within a weak of getting out of the hospital (I was in for 3 weeks), I went back to smoking. Fast forward to Aug. 5, 2010 I smoked my last cigarette in the pack & told myself "now would be a good time to quit". Right then I received the faith of a mustard seed from Jesus. I bowed my head and asked Him to take away my addiction. He did and I knew it. I also quit drinking at the same time and had no withdrawals. This is my story. Take care and God bless, Ken

Tip #1, STOP SMOKING!, notice how that is the very first tip. I have a friend suffering from COPD, sad part is his wife been smoking for 30 yrs and hasn't quit. I figure seeing her husband go thru it, she would stop, nope. And her husband has stage 4 cancer, like COPD wasn't bad enough.

I guess everyone who has copd is different, special with given up smoking. like Leonard Neomy, he stopped 30 years ago and still got copd years later. He had all what he could afford and still died of it.
He tweeted: Smokers, please understand. If you quit after you're diagnosed with lung damage it's too late. Grandpa says learn my lesson. Quit now. LLAP. that was in February 2014.
