If you want a great source for strong, exotic woods for your knives that sport wooden scales, keep an eye out for events in your area, whose purpose is to keep construction waste out of landfills. (The one in my area is called “zero landfill”.) I have attended two so far and both times I scored a great many hand size samples of wonderful woods for knife handle making. Everything from curly maple to kumaru. Perfect dimensions for knife scales. -Stagger

About the polyester thing; it seems to me that the resin would theoretically have a weaker bond with smooth polyester fibers than it would with natural fibers. I don't think it matters in the context of knifemaking though. Either one is going to be incredibly strong.

Micarta was used to make POOL CUE FERRULES when ivory was banned..... I myself prefer micarta ferrules it was the best playing material
