There is a technique they use in courses like Dale Carnegie where they tell you to do something stupid in front of everyone else and then after they point out how no one's opinion of you really changed. I think singing and hearing yourself sing, especially recorded, is kind of like seeing yourself in a mirror, or in a picture. You just have to get used to what you sound like.
luckily I work night shift so I just belt it out in the car during my drive home and nobody else is on the road. I'm sure my neighbors appreciate it lol. just do basic breathing and the do ra mi fa so la ti da exercises. you can do it quietly and still get a good workout.
This was so well explained - for the first time in my life I just heard my natural grit - and completely painless on my vocal chords! I'm in awe right now. Huge light-bulb moment, thank you so much!!!
Step 3 needs more explanation for sure. I have a naturally clear voice and really want to learn how to access the grit, but don't know how yo reach that overcompressed sound. Lots of people I imagine are going to be trying thar step 3 either with no succeas or with a lot of pain because they really don't know what to do to access that sound.
I know this video is pretty old but I'm having trouble on step 3. I can easily switch from breathy tone to a compressed one but when it comes to leaning it harder I always use my throat :((. Any help?
start feeling the diaphragm by adding that 'pee holding' pressure, the tension should help overcompress your regular belting when adding force to get the grit. hope it helps
You know I didn’t think I’d ever have to learn to breathe with my crotch muscles... as someone who has a naturally soft voice and a love for metal, I appreciate this whole video. Was definitely surprised by that part though 😂 Edit: I commented a bit early in the video. I learned how to fry scream by screaming along in my truck but could only do a harsh pure fry sound with almost none if any of my singing voice mixed it. I literally have been confused about that for months now and you explained it in a short UA-cam video. Thank you so much!
Managed to get a scream started, was able to sing along with a few songs from Linkin Park. Definitely started hurting after about two songs, but it's so cool being able to sing with the same vocal style!
I've only really figured out how to use grit in my breathy voice... I also haven't been able to use a fry scream much louder than a whisper scream... any suggestions?
EE Games He's got a whole video for it! also, you want to practice not more than 5 minutes a day (at least until you get the hang of it) so that you don't lose any notes.
I think you should do the over compressed grit, the breathy grit sounds a bit unhealthy. The fry scream definitely starts as a whisper scream. Be patient with it- it will only come with consistent practice
Great video as always! Thank you! Can wait to hear the original songs. If you ever wanted to post some videos on songwriting (getting inspiration, writing a vocal melody, writing in the pop punk or post hardcore styles, etc) I would be very interested. If not, please keep the vocal training videos coming. I watch them all! Have a great day :)
I know this video is a bit old now, but I'm curious about the "raising the pelvic floor" bit. Every teacher I've come across has said that you should actually try to push down on the pelvic floor to ensure proper engagement. Is this different for gritty vocals, perhaps? The explanation I've seen is that raising the pelvic floor will push the diaphragm up and create less space for your air which can be inefficient. However, I could see that if you're just trying to create as much internal pressure as possible for gritty vocals, then it might make sense to lift the floor to press upwards into your vocal cords. I'm just worried about potential strain/damage, so I want to be sure I understand correctly. Thank you!
Yes! I'm working on this - For songs where the rhythms are much more complicated, I try to simplify while I'm practicing singing over it in order to get the over all timing more accurate and then gradually work in the complexity.
Seems like one of the most important steps is getting to the mix voice or higher first and then working in the rasp. Any lower and it seems like you want to try to use your throat and it inhibits the process. I found it easy to hit it with doing the kurt cobain style whine to the start of the phrase or the allanis morrisette yodel "thing."
I used to be able to do this just fine, but now I do it and I feel that burning or scratchy feeling in my throat? I had a sore throat the week before but it’s been a full week of rest? What happened?
Legit, going from breathy to regular to grit made it really click in my head, here I have been trying to learn how to do this for like 3 years and after 5 minutes here I have learnt more than I have in those 3 years lmfao
I've been trying to learn this for a while now, with this video this is the closest I've come to actually pulling it off! My throat feels a bit rough afterwards tho.
Do you have any videos or tips about making your tone sound whinier? I get a grungy sound like Bush when I do this. It sounds cool, but that's not what I'm after.
OMG this is a great explanation!!! I tried it with doing that pelvis thing already in the beginning of the video and accidentally did the healthy grit xD I'm having problems with reproducing it again xD but I think I can maybe learn with exploring this technique further. I thought that this is impossible to learn for me (and I even learned how to do growl but grit...couldn't do it). Great video! 😀
Thanks for the really easy to understand tutorial. But one thing I’m not sure about is what you mean by “leaning into it more for the grit” do you mean like push more air out?
Great video as always! Can you explain maybe in the next video about the way austin carlile of OMM do his very different screaming? :D love your videos doug keep posting :D
Does the grit come from a similar place as the fry scream sound? I've just gotten into this, and it feels to me like these two sounds come from the same area (I think it's the soft pallette?) I feel it most like in the top of the back of my mouth, I get a slight tickle sensation.
@@Dougzed Yes I do notice that. I will continue to work on both. You're videos have been very helpful. They are very straightforward and the fact that you don't use any processing really helps know what the raw sound should be like. Thanks!
It annoys me to no end how during breathing specific advice the only bit that people go over is the inhalation process, the exhalation is just as if not more important. Are we supposed to just really go for it and let our air out (my vocal teacher tells me this but I’m still not sure) or do you not let much of any air out and really tighten up your stomach muscles to compress (which is the advice online rock vocal teachers like Chris Liepe give)?
@@Dougzed Good to know, sorry if I came off as rude it’s just without fail every vocal video I see they go over the breathing like “all right take a big belly breath” and then just move on to something else lol

Okay, try compressing it much less. You can still make the grit sound without forcing the compression, usually it just ensures that the sound will not be too breathy
Doug Zed thank you so much for the video it definitely helps and so far all your tutorials have done nothing but improve me, do you know any metalcore songs that are somewhat easy, I wanna be able to do something like of mice and men, architects, or even like moths to flames eventually but idk where to start....
I already liked this apparently. If you make a video teaching beginners then you should teach; not just demonstrate. It's a good video all the same. I hear no grit in his vocals.
if u make analogy of voice grit and sandpaper..his voice would be....printer paper
It is easier for a heavier voice like a baritone to do it. He is a tenor, so he sounds less heavy, but I can hear the same technique in his voice.
Yeah it doesn't sound really gritty but that doesn't mean it's not compressed.
