    As a judge I wouldnt allow her to continue if a doctor doesnt check her before. Health is way more important than performance. Head injuries can be fatal and there are times you dont see the damage right immediately.
    You can allow contestants to restart their rutine and discount all their previous faults.

      I agree, if someone hits their head during a performance, they shouldn't be allowed to continue. The risk of a another fall is not worth further injury. Imagine if she had sustained even a small skull fracture or brain bleed continues to perform and ends up losing her balance hitting her head yet again causing severe trauma 😬
      Time is of the essence when it comes to head trauma. That being said their performance was beautiful

    • @andreadeagon2301
      @andreadeagon2301 5 років тому +21

      priscilla crow Yeah, I remember someone commenting that a skater was wobbling on a spin when actually they were going to an inside edge. Watching skating only gets you so far. Sloppy is a loaded word, implying that the skater has bad technique. She does not have bad technique. Go look at the protocols and see how much the judges dinged her landings, and it doesn’t add up to much. Not horrible, and sloppy is the wrong word to describe the landings you object to. Wonky is the informal term :-). Shaky works, though only one or at most 2 is that. No deep outside edge would be another complaint for a couple. But horrible? Pejorative and vague isn’t a good look.

    • @andreadeagon2301
      @andreadeagon2301 5 років тому +8

      priscilla crow I agree, she was off her game. I think what I objected to was a tone I saw in your comment which was not what you meant, and is probably the internet communication problem. I admit I don’t like the term sloppy, as there are terms that are more specific to what happened and sound less judgmental. To me, sloppy refers to technique, whereas “she is off her game; she was already having a hard time maintaining her landing, holding her edge, etc., I would have understood your respectful position. Terminology, type, the internet. 😀

    This whole "she's so strong for continuing" rhetoric I'm seeing in the comments completely disregards that being knocked out like that can be quite dangerous and someone should've stepped in for her own safety instead of letting her continue. Head injuries are no joke, and what happens after getting knocked out (preventing the head from moving and going to the hospital for observation and treatment vs. shaking it off and getting right back up) can have an impact on the severity of the damage from the concussion. So yeah it was brave and whatnot, but it was also very dangerous, even more dangerous than, say, continuing with a broken bone.

    Just a guess but I'm thinking there was something perhaps going on with her blood sugar.
    There are multiple moments before that fall where you can tell she is shaky and wobbly, especially in some landings.
    The women in pairs skating try to keep their weight under a certain number so that they can be lifted and tossed etc. It would not surprise me if that were a key factor and this incident, and that she didn't have sufficient fuel before going out onto the ice.
    My heart really went out to them watching this. You can see how concerned her partner is, and you can also see how determined she is to get through the routine.

      Veronica Sendor I agree with you, in many performance sports we are taught that no matter if the stunt falls (in my case since I’m a competitive cheerleader) or if you get injured during the performance you have to keep going until the very end. You can see a moment of hesitation from the guy when he picked her up, a lot of people are saying he shouldn’t have grabbed her like that but I’m sure he was just as worried as anyone else and simply didn’t know what to do so just decided to play it off as “gracefully” as possible as if it was part of the performance all along. And I’m sure she told him to keep going because after all a lot of performers rather finish the performance and hold in the pain than get points deducted. Which I seriously do not recommend because it could be extremely dangerous (as seen in the video) but it’s the most “professional” thing to do 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Veronica Sendor exactly!!! I’m a majorette ( I do competitive baton ) and while competing I threw my baton too close and when I came up from my illusion I hit my face and sliced my nose from my glasses. There was quite a bit of blood but I still kept going or else in would’ve gotten disqualified and as a athlete or a performer you are always taught to finish no matter what. As much as it sucks, it happens all the time

      In figure skating you cannot stop in the middle of a program or else you'll lose a good amount of points, if they had stopped to check for any bad injuries they would have had to probably forfeit. As an ex skater myself the biggest thing to do after having a fall or anything is to finish the program and that's what we are taught to do as skater from our coach. It may not sound right but that's the reality of figure skating.

    • @amyc5437
      @amyc5437 5 років тому +78

      Gabriel Clemente I think they meant that the skater should have stopped completely, doesn’t matter if you have to forfeit, safety in ANY sport is priority and she looked pretty dazed by the fall and she may even have lost consciousness for a second or two. Sure they may only get a handful of opportunities to skate at big comps but getting to the top or being the best is NEVER worth risking your safety after have a fall, especially when it is a serious head injury.

      @@amyc5437but what I'm trying to say is that I know it was a bad fall we could all see, but as figure skaters we were always taught to finish the program. Yes it was a bad fall and yes she should seek medical attention but no one knows how much effort skaters put into the sport. Skaters have probably experienced worse in everyday training. It may not seem worth from an outside perspective but as a skater that's what we have to go through. Coaches have always taught us to finish the program. I remember my coach telling me that he doesn't care if I sprain my ankle or get a concussion in the middle of competition, just do your best and finish the skate which I agree for many reasons. It may not seem right but that's how much athletes want it. Plus they were already almost done the program with a really good skate besides that fall and a couple others.

My coach always values my health and constantly checks if I'm okay even if I only tripped over my toe pick. But at the same time I can see the other point of yes generally we are trained to keep going and finish the program. We also don't know what was going on in her head but clearly she decided to keep going, the reason behind that we may never know.

      I agree. This is such a dangerous sport. I started following figure skating in the 60s when the famous Soviet (Union) skaters Belousova and Protopopov were the best in the world. The difference in the level of danger between then and now is enormous. They were greatly adored around the world - and didn’t really take their lives in their hands every practice session or every performance. Perhaps we should consider initiating some safety guidelines. They’re trying to reduce traumatic brain injury in other sports.

      Perhaps they should have stopped but this means a lot to the skaters, if she didn't get up or was showing signs that she physically couldn't skate safely, they would have called it but you can see the partner asking if she was OK and she wanting to carry on, if he sensed that she couldn't do the lifts and jumps because she was too wobbly or not with it, he would have stopped but this is a long long time training and putting time and sweat into this that falling twice is bad enough, not finishing is like adding salt, so it's easy to see why they didn't automatically step in, I personally think they should have stepped in, but I also understand why they didn't.

The way she fell, the back of her head connected with the ice and he slowed her fall. You can only analyze what happened, you can't say that this or that would've happened because I've seen people take some serious falls or into situations that seemed like they were going to be really serious but the person walked away pretty much unharmed.

    What she did with that recovery is something 99.99999999% could never do. She should be proud of this moment, in spite of the disappointment. Hope she’s okay

      Yes, and that's something you definitely should not do after such a fall. She could barely stand and apparently she went unconscious for a second, that's very dangerous.
