    I've been practicing my writing skills since I was 10. I love this font. My current style is all letters are the same height and it has changed how neatly I write. However people should understand that every day writing is not ever going to be a pretty as when the letters are made with conscious effort. Also don't beat yourself up if your letters aren't perfect from the start. I also suggest writing the alphabet and circling letters that need work. Concentrate on those letters until you're happy with them.

    You can write legibly without focusing on all of these details and analysis by simply finding a comfortable writing tool for your preferred grip. I helped medical students accomplish this by watching them write and then offering suggestions for optimal writing instruments based on grip, the pressure applied, and how they positioned their body and the writing surface. Hopefully JetPens will next feature a video showing how varied are the grips, pressure, and paper position of their employees when writing -- and writing to someone can be far more motivating than practicing the same sentence over and over.

    I appreciate the logic behind the spacing in letters like a, d, u...adds to the motivating principles of legibility. At the end of the day, I just really struggle to keep the same energy from the first letter to the last. 😂 in my journals, it starts off really neat. But a paragraph later, depending on the shifting mood, it sizes up, sizes down, entangles letters, turns to clumsy cursives...and maybe once i realized it looks wonky, i consciously make my writing neater (interestingly stablizes my mood to be more objective or calm about what I'm writing too.)

    This is absolute gold! The technical detail is just perfect.
    Everyone would write perfectly in an ideal world where we have the time & environment when kids ... Sadly that is rarely the case.
    Now it's up to us a adults to fight through the bad habits...
    That said, examples shown are presentation standard so ... We should be kind to ourselves, and patient!
    Noting the death-grip and slow speed of execution are a function of the precision achieved.
    After practicing deliberately like this, real world legibility & esthetic will improve and hopefully not slow down too much.
    For myself I need to get the thoughts out of my head FAST so... It ain't pretty!

      It has been something like 3 decades+ since I first learned to write. However, at that time we were taught that "print"/"block letters" and "cursive" were both types of writing/handwriting. (IE - all apples are fruits but not all fruits are apples.) I've never actually heard anyone refer to "cursive" and "writing" being exact synonyms. (IE eggplant vs aubergine.) That's fascinating.

  • @foodpuppie
    @foodpuppie 3 місяці тому +3

    I'm a neuroscientist who has done research in perceptual grouping. I have to disagree that increased spacing improves legibility. There needs to be an obvious distinction between letters grouped together and words spaced apart. I have always found the JetPens writing to be a bit difficult to read because of that. I also don't know where they got the idea that separating the ball and the stick (in an a or d for example) improves legibility. For me it does not. I like the angle, only because it's a bit easier to write, not because of legibility. Legibility also might be cultural. For example, Japanese letters are spaced out in a different way from how Roman letters tend to get grouped because they're syllabic (and kanji) rather than alphabetical. The principles of legibility don't translate from Japanese to Roman letters, in my opinion.
