This is a 30 year old outdated technology it's called pen plotter I used o fix these machines from lockheed martin (calcomp), widely used in cad industry and even today some radium cutter still use these machines.
Zaki Adam While the tech is not necessarily new, the implementation is. If you read the designers own comments, it's a newer system, that is stiffer, more capable and much faster. In fact the speed is the greatest improvement.
@@chrisbloodworth72 not to say i don't like this machine, but speedwise, have you ever seen an old pen plotter in action? Also very cool technology from a bygone era: ua-cam.com/video/YLZtSUiB2eE/v-deo.html
@@rp101aquatics6 no it's not that simple. To make a machine a as precise to the point where it can draw a seemingly perfect circle on such small scale means having very precise parts and preferably measuring the pens position as many times as possible and using that information to auto correct the machine. This machine is a true masterpiece of technology and if you don't see that, that's very disappointing. When I see this thing, I imagine the hours and hours of coding, let alone the troubleshooting, let alone the fact that this is the 3rd version of this product.
I've used something similar in a previous tech job. Worked great but didn't use regular pens, we had to use special plotting pens that were expensive. This is too cool, this could replace my printer, imagine, no more expensive ink cartridges.
this was the standard Arhitectural CAD plotter using real Rotring Rapidographs, in various thicknesses and colours, some years ago. seeing it using a fountain pen is so satisfying.
I have this machine but I need a video for how to define the device on Win 7 ... 32 bit and how to use it on the Inkscape program and accept my greetings..
So this just randomly popped up on my UA-cam. And I look at it and I said this is cool although I have to admit it's randomly silly like my old egg bot. And then I looked at who made this. Awesome. You guys have been doing this the whole time... Keep up the good work
i have seen something like this before from the 1960s. isn't it called a pen plotter? my old programming teacher has one in his office that i'm sota helping him get to work again. it does however not use full size pens. it just got a lot of small ink pens/bullets that it quick changes. i think he said it was able to do something approaching CMYK printing. but nice machine.
ok sorry did not check the web page so sorry. also sorry again but i have two questions.. is there any reason you aren't using a gantry system like on 3d printers? i reckon that it for a lighter and faster pen movement using those linear motors is that right? what's the max size? from the size of the linear motors on yours one i reckon it's able to draw up to A4 right? the reason i'm asking this is because old one uses a gantry system and it's max is A3 paper. because he may be interested in this axi draw i that case. i'll have to ask him. thank you.
This one is A4 (or letter) size. The geometry is such that the pen extends beyond the footprint of the machine, which makes it so that you can place it next to, or on top of things, to draw on them.
In some ways, yes. But, there are a lot of things that calligraphers do that this can't-- for example rotating the wrist left-right, rotating the pen angle up-down, rotating the pen in place to match, and being sensitive to the amount of pressure applied.
How would one search for professionals that can write software and merge it with excel cells to write letters. Think mailmerge. What skills would they require to do such a task? Thanks!
I find the price somewhat HIGH, 3 times more expansive than an Ender 3 3D printer, is that because it's made in USA? It does seem to be good quality and precision, but the Ender is 0.2 mm precision also.
Wow - I haven't seen an XY grid penplotter in a long time. Last one I saw rolled the paper. So how do you use this then. I guess build some sort of board or drafting surface to mount it on? And what about the interface? I guess you need vector data to send it. What applications will it run in (inkscape?)
For this type, where the pen extends past the body, you can place it on top of large paper, or place paper on (for example) a clipboard in front of it. Yes, uses vector graphics input -- from Inkscape, CLI, and APIs.
"However, its unique design features a drawing head that extends beyond the body of the machine, making it possible to also draw on flat objects bigger than the machine itself. For example, you can set it right on top of a box to write an address or add decorations. You can even set it on top of a poster board, chalkboard, or whiteboard to draw graphics in place." What does this mean? Can i plot on a format as big as for example A2, A1, A0? Thanks
Yes, you can place it on paper as large as you like. However, there is no guarantee that you can pick it up and tile it into larger-scale plots -- that's pretty challenging for alignment. If you want to go larger, you might want one of our A2 or A1 size machines.
perfect your project, I'm a beginner and I'm having a hard time doing what you showed in the video: fill with zigzag, for example, an object. How do I do that? can you help me?
1:08 Wow, this one is beautiful, can't wrap my head around the algorithm behind this... Did you use the grey scale value to determine amplitude and wavelength of the sine wave?
Please don't mind me but why would you buy this instead of a printer? Yes people can see its real ink and not printed but aside from that, what else is there?
First, this is not something you get "instead of a printer" -- it *is* a specialized type of printer. Most people who get these have other types of printers that they use as well. The most common applications are as a signature machine, for writing notes or addressing envelopes when you need it to look like it was handwritten, and for artists, transcribing digital artwork into archival media.
This is SLOWER than ANY printer in the industry. Has fewer number of parts than the smallest and more practical printer in the market out there and costs MORE than 10 times the smaller version. VERY EXPENSIVE!!!. On the other hand is Unique, you won't have any ink problems, is portable. You don't put paper in the printer, you put the printer on the paper. Nice NOT FOR OFFICE WORK!!!

I'm not sure what arrows you are pressing; there aren't any arrows to press on an AxiDraw. Maybe you have some different type of machine?

I presume with a little bit of alignment, this could be used to make much much bigger plots by just moving the thing from 1 corner to another?
In principle, but we haven't experimented with it.
This is really interesting material. I appreciate the effort you put into providing it. Many thanks!
Would this be able to do calligraphy with single strokes instead of outlining then filling, or is that a more complicated process for it?
In some ways, yes. But, there are a lot of things that calligraphers do that this can't-- for example rotating the wrist left-right, rotating the pen angle up-down, rotating the pen in place to match, and being sensitive to the amount of pressure applied.
So it's only a matter of time, then ;) I will watch this space for future calligraphic robots!
