Top decision-makers: Set their own standards: they know what they want, and how to get what they want. Self-management: they manage their emotions well, don't let emotions get in the way. Implementation: they do what they set for themselves. 3 Decision-making traps: Over-stimulation Solution: Simplify. Pick top 7 chunks of information. Perfectionism Solution: Successful decision-makers act when they have 80% of the information. Fix errors on the way. Stress: Stress raises your cortisone level, which blocks the information to your brain's decision-making center. And your amygdala makes you avoid danger. So you will fall back to old habits under stress. Solution: train your brain under stress by doing more new things. Because unfamilar things will automatically raise your cortisone level, and you can train your brain to do well under that situation.
Excellent talk. Very useful message - Your life is a result of your decisions Summary to take better decisions: 1. Simplify - narrow it down to top 7 (or less) 2. Train your Brain under stress by regularly leaving the comfort zone 3. Perfectionism - don't wait for 80% or more info, before taking the decision
This is a GREAT video! I teach middle school, and I'm going to show my students this video at the start of the year. Love it! Thank you for posting--and also keeping it student friendly!
The problem with decision making is: lot of options! (paralyzation). Solution: 1- Narraow the options to a maximum of 7 options. 2- Put Permanant Stress on your self to get adapted to decision stress by getting out from your comfort zone. 3- Don’t seek perfectionism. (if you have around 80% of the information that is enough) as Stephen R.Covey says ”Perfection prevents action”.
Hi Angelica, you could do that. Even more effective is to train your brain to cope with higher cortisol levels. You can do that by constantly leaving the comfort zone!
"When you wish to reflect upon or consider a matter, you consult something within you. You say, shall I do it, or shall I not do it? Is it better to make this journey or abandon it? Whom do you consult? Who is within you deciding this question? Surely there is a distinct power, an intelligent ego. Were it not distinct from your ego, you would not be consulting it. It is greater than the faculty of thought. It is your spirit which teaches you, which advises and decides upon matters." - Abdu’l-Baha, Baha'i Faith
Does anyone know or can contact this guy? I would love to have a small podcast with him. I am a student and doing a podcast about decition making. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks so much James! I look forward to more talks in English in 2017.. Until then you can find more on my official website, mostly german though: www.BenediktAhlfeld.com
hi!! in video u said we are not the product of our jeans and education but the results of our decesion ..... how u justify it?? ( also any other person or anyone have u justify this ??) because i didn't get it
hi every body. I have a problem, would anybody help me, I am studing physical therapy, it's my first year in university, I love physical therapy, and there are no problems with studying, I get really high marks in exams, but the problem is that I don't know what I am doing here, I don't want to be a physiotherapist, I like reading In business and want to be an entrepreneur, I don't know should I stop studying physical therapy, and go to business school, or should I study business just beside my physical therapy course which is my parents opinion.
Yousseff, your question, I believe is one that plagues the minds of most young adults starting out in a new direction. There are several ways to approach this question, but I would start out by re framing it. If you are starting out on the path to physical therapy and enjoy that vocation, the question you should be asking yourself is WHY. EXAMPLE: "Why am I such an awesome physical therapist?" You see that the "Why" question basically creates a google search mechanism internally and the brain and mind will search this indefinitely and line up your conscious and your sub-conscious to create a physically congruent success path. The key is consistent repetition to re-frame your thoughts and beliefs to be congruent.
I have to say, this guy is really charismatic but he has no idea what he is talking about. Bad combination... I'm afraid that a lot of people might take his statements literally. He gives the classic empowering tips that people would really love to believe in and that keep coaches rich. Many of them are just empty words. For example, how do you know when you have aquired 80% of information? You can't. Is 80% the magic number for all types of decisions? He takes the work of great psychologists and violates them. Also, the mechanism described regarding stress is fully wrong and the leaving the comfort zone is typical empoewering gibberish. There are tens of great videos on decision making. For anyone interested in the psychology of decision making, you can check: Barry Schwartz , Dan Gilbert , Malcolm Gladwell, Gerd Gigerenzer, Carol Dweck, Angela Lee Duckworth, Simon Sinek (some of whom are actual scientists)
No new insights? That material is freakin old within the self help community. There are many new studies on the topic and you just repeated the five most famous books over and over? Next time you could just read covey in front of them. Would be more helpful since it's actually 'original' material. Cudos for doing a ted talk though.
Hi simple guy, thanks for the feedback. Good for you that you already knew some of those points I made. Not everyone does! My focus was to compress all that's important in 17 minutes and be entertaining at the same time. :) If I'd had more time I could have gone way deeper. Maybe next time!

I admire you can give a ted talk in your second language.
It doesn't matter if it is your second language, what matters is your message.
