      +raondaim Obviously everyone knows by now that Cho won the gold.. I don't have a problem with that even though I though Liu is better overall even with her mistakes in the Concerto. So, those of you who think errors don't count, they do. Because the second prize is Hamelin(not my cup of tea) and he also made few mistakes. The third went to Liu who should have been first. The fourth went to Lu who would be higher if it wasn't for his Concerto mistakes. The fifth went to Yang...I admire him but I don't get it. He is only 16 and sounds immature and made a ton of errors in the Concerto. I am shocked that Aimi and Nehring did not break the top 6. So I think the jurors wanted performances with the fewest errors in all the rounds.

    • @xiao1215
      @xiao1215 9 років тому

      +Vette gaddia Perhaps if Liu had chosen F minor concerto, jury wouldn't have that many contestants to compare with other than Hamelin, and that could have been a better strategy.

    The only music continuously flowing throughout the entire movements is Cho's. He has the biggest perspective with the concerto and doesn't break the music into sections, he sees it as a whole. And his sound is so brilliant.

      +Oi OMG interestingly enough, I was reading an old interview with Chung Myung-hwun(pianist/conductor brother of violinist Chung Myung-hwa), and he said the similar thing regarding how Cho has the maturity and depth of knowledge of music for such a young person, that despite his young age, he can see and understand a piece of music as a big whole picture.

  • @gakasi9

    Cho play rich, colorful and dynamic. I can feel enough tension through the piece. I can feel similar tension from kate. But Cho's play is more dramatic while kate play pure and innocent. Both are good but for my taste, Cho better. He is quite different.

      democolor42 get out of your cave and get a life. You were commenting about Seong Jin Cho, aka the latest rising star in the classical music world. Legendary figure like Zimmerman is fond of him, along with Pletnev, etc..his CD's became the most sold classical CD last year with 150,000, his another latest CD of Chopin Concerto is top in Korean Billboard, AGAIN. UNheard of that a classical CD tops Kpop music. Come out and see how Cho is becoming hugely successful, as his concerts/recitals' tickets sell out too quick that they had to change the hall to a bigger place, (e.g. the San Francisco recital next year)..I can go on and on, but I think you get the idea...^^

  • @kojosun

    To me, it was very unique experience to listen and find a controversy within myself between before and after the winners announcement. It turned the gala performance that settled my problems for good.
    Until right after the final, my problem list accounted Liu's and Aimi's heartbreaking but unacceptable mistakes, Cho's IBM Deep Blue style and the fact that they were all great pianists by everyone's own merits, finding myself in a controversy in agreeing who really won.
    But, lo and behold, there was the gala where Cho unleashed himself, became a mustang jumped out of the fence and started running across prairies, singing and dancing Chopin. Concerto no 1 was out of comparison from final round and the polonaise Op.
    53 was the best I have ever heard, alarming knocking Arthur off his old rocking chair.
    A Chopin not quite familiar as traditional Chopinesque he was. I immediately
    understood that any competition is the worst cage where Cho does his things yearning to find his eternal wilderness freedom in the near future, I hope.
    So my problems settled and controversy dissolved.
    Just got stuck with this trouble maker to follow whatever he will be doing to see what this mustang will become down the road.

    I just watched the intermission interview with Yundi Li. I don't know... he did not answer all the questions addressed to him and appeared a bit arrogant to me. First of all, he shouldn't be excused to attend his friend's wedding in the middle of the competition. By the way, I think it was a wedding of a famous Chinese movie star. It is a total lack of respect for this competition. If he feels his friend's wedding and the mingling with the celebrities were more important than being a jury member, he should have turn down the invitation to be a jury member from the beginning. There are many distinguished and more qualified people to replace him.

    Cho is clearly the winner. It was not even close. Oh, the mistakes by the others were so distracting-like nails on chalkboard. Although overall all the performances were enjoyable and I would pay to see (and hear) any of them. In a musical competition the only interpretation that the judges are looking for is the one who best conjures Chopin. Whoever best recreates his vision, mood, sound and, yes, "technical facility," wins the day. It baffles me to no end that mistakes-horribly distracting in and of themselves-can be deemed trivial when considering the collective quality-and enjoyment and recreation-of a masterpiece. Such liberties would have Chopin rolling in his grave (and not rock n' rolling). I can't imagine Chopin saying, "your mistakes don't matter. I created masterpieces knowing people won't ever achieve excellence. Passion and emotion are good enough; really, I want people to do their own thing and jack up my pieces (in modern day Compton Vernacular)."

      I totally agree with you. You nailed the coffin with "recreation of masterpiece".

      Tf? Who are you to critique everyone? If one captures the soul and passion of Chopin, you are already achieving a level of excellence, for example, Kate Liu!! Mistakes aren't everything you know, it just tells you that you're human. A piece with no mistake requires years of practicing the same piece. Just enjoy the music, and I'm also pretty sure Chopin wouldn't be 'rolling' in his grave. He would be honored to have a competition with international acclaim honor him, how foolish of you to say such things!!!

    • @dankg55
      @dankg55 6 років тому +3

      Everyone knows how many mistakes Horowitz did in one single performance. God knows he achieved excellence ; that the amount of musicians that can stand next to him is close to 0. I don't say that the competitors achieved excellence, I only say that the amount of mistakes one make doesn't define the value nor the level of his performance.
      Sorry for my English..

      It's so funny to me that people seem to know that Chopin would have said and done or if he would have approved of his music being used as material for competition. Entitled folks.

    Such stunning performances with virtuosities. He simply far outmatched them all. Perfect touches in due course. And his glitterily sweated face indicated the way he've endeavored through to attain his sole aim. But above all, we've all felt his liberal mind to waltz around on the piano keys

    If the competition really looks at all the rounds, Cho wins. Judging is always subjective however, and the more emotional Ami's and Katie's may sway the jurors. However, the sheer power & confidence of Cho, along with an absolutely flawless technical performance should win him the competition.

Bravo to the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Jacek Kaspszyk! Easy to spot brilliance through the way the conductor and orchestra interacts with the pianist during the piece. And what a standing ovation at the end!
    Thank you Chopin Institution for being so quick with the uploads! Amazing quality and sound :)

      dazhen xiong 南韩小赵获得第一名没意见,他从第一轮开始就很棒。但是,协奏曲我觉得刘凯特最好,第一乐章的轻重缓急,对意境的把握很能感染人。第二乐章很美,应该是所有选手中让人听得的最舒服的。第三乐章仁者见仁智者见智吧。她失误应该不少,机器人不会有失误。以上个人见解。

    I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. It's obvious the top players all each possessed huge musicality that is hard to fathom its relative depth. Then it's only natural for the judges to turn to their technical sides to pick the winner. That's what it takes to be a winner. You couldn't have made it this far with so-called machinery perfection (or as others would call it, beautiful restraint).They all have it, but Cho was flawless. Enough said. It's really idiotic to argue your subjective preference to be superior than others.

      Absolutely and positively YES! It was simply Outstanding. This performance by Aimi was Flawless, and I can testify to that since I watched it live without video glitches like we notice in this uploaded version. The emotional output she delivered was simply phenomenal and in my honest opinion, it outranked the other contenders by a noticeable margin. The other Artists were also excellent and performed extraordinarily well, however they were to my ear and senses, more technical where a certain element was missing. Aimi delivered as we have known her to do for years. The senses were complete in her interpretation and there was the unexplainable element within her rendition which makes a sizable difference. To date, and In my assessment, Aimi Kobayashi won this round, however, having more competence and expertise than I, the Jury will decide who the real winner is and I will necessarily trust their decision.

    • @vettegaddia6234
      @vettegaddia6234 9 років тому +6

      Richard Deschenes ummm...my dear, I understand it's Aimi's best round. But are the jury going to do a 2010 and give it to some others. She was fantastic in the Concerto. But she was not nearly as great as she can be in a couple of rounds. I am a huge fan of her's. But I have heard her played MUCH better. So it will be the call of the jurors who LOVE her.
      IMO, I think Liu and Cho are the total package here. You can argue that the Concerto belong to Aimi. She was fantastic, thank you. But she did not get a bear hug from the conductor or the only standing ovation thus far from the audience as Liu. The only other pianist I can see who can break the gold silver bronze mark is Lu. So we will see what he does.
