Growing up, we had a Helms truck and a regular driver delivering Helms’ baked goods. I think it was a couple times a week. My mom bought breads, rolls, sweets from the driver, who ‘sang’ what items were for sale as he opened the drawers to show her the goods that were available. His singing drove my mom nuts! Those were the days. My elementary school also took field trips to the Helms Bakery. We would tour the massive bakery and at the end of our visit received little paper Helms Trucks, filled with miniature baked items. One of our favorite field trips!
I remember the Helms truck when I was a kid in Covina. The truck would stop, the guy would get out and open the back door of the yellow panel truck. Drawers full of Donuts! If heaven has a smell, that was it!
Helms bakery trucks use to travel all over Los Angeles county back in the day. I remember the truck coming with fresh donuts & all us kids from the neighborhood would be outside telling our moms which donuts we wanted. Now those were the days. 😁👍🏽
I grew up in Huntington Park in the 50's and would get so excited when I would hear the Helms whistle and see the beautiful panel truck in front of our house. Just like in the picture on the wall there, they had big beautiful wooden drawers that would pull out the back of the truck to show all the goodies. I always would get a delicious creme puff. Miss those days, Melaney from SoCal
I was born in Torrance and I remember begging my mom to buy donuts from the Helms bakery truck. She never would. When I got older I spent my babysitting money on chocolate donuts from Helms. So good!❤
@@squalli1297 ooh I don't think I ever had those! I live in Vegas and we just got a Randy's Donuts! Delicious! Cream filled maple bars are my favorite.
yes, as kids in the 1950's we used to run to the helms bakery truck for the donuts. ditto the ice cream truck. cost? 10 cents to a quarter..the ice cream truck not helms owned. also, remember when the milkman delivered milk in glass bottles, chocolate milk, and orange juice too. wow mike did you open up memories.. this was in long beach ca
In the 1960's we lived in the Los Angeles area and as children we couldn't wait for the Helms truck to come down our street. They had all kinds of baked goods and even candy that was in the drawer. But to me the best thing of all was they had the best and I mean the best Cream Puffs in the world.
In the early 70s Helms was still delivering baked goods with their panel trucks. I lived off Hoover (the hood), and they still delivered like ice cream trucks do. Fresh warm donuts were either 5 or 10 cents. I can't remember. Still, the best tasting donuts ever.
In June 1965 I worked the late afternoon to early AM at Helm's where I pulled stock for the trucks, rode my bike to the Venice Beach at Speedway & Wave Crest my apartment costs $67.50/month. I was 19. The lunchroom had a huge mound of butter and all kinds of baked good for us workers to enjoy. Memories...I am now almost 77 live mostly on a beach across the Pacific Ocean in the Philippines! Thank you Mike!
Helms Bakery bread trucks were awesome! I grew up in Ventura County. If I remember correctly, they would blow this steam type whistle as they came down the street. Of course the bread was good, but the huge long trays filled with various fresh donuts were the 💣! After the demise of Helms Bakery, this store was turned intoThe Antique Guild. They had tons of antiques, collectibles and retro items at reasonable prices. I was so sad to see it fold. This Buttercup store looks cool, but unrealistically priced for the average person. Still great though for inspiring furniture and design. Thank you for sharing! 👍😊
@@vicaroo001 Then we went back to school and the teacher made butter for the bread. Our Helms delivery driver was the best and if we heard him coming we would try to beg some change from my mom to buy something. Sometimes by the time we got the money we had to chase him running at full speed down the block. Same with the ice cream man. LOL
They had those amazing tea cakes & doughnuts ....delivered in those trucks with the wooden drawers in Glendale. Oh my, I'm old. Best memories ever. Yummmmy!!!❤
Such a wonderful memory as a child growing up in West Covina Ca. running out to greet the Helms Chevy panel truck as the neatly dressed driver popped open the rear doors to a variety of freshly baked doughnuts, bread, and cookies the smells were amazing... wow that was nearly 60 yrs. ago. Thanx for sharing. Sadly I don't think this concept would work today.
Oh man, I would love to see a video of this.......just to KNOW it happened! We had delivery of milk from Smith Brothers (WA State - Seattle area) and I still see trucks but not often.
It's always fun to go to IKEA or other furniture stores just to see how they stage the pieces. As the granddaughter of a cabinetmaker, I can appreciate the skill and craft that goes into handmade furniture. GIV, you can make a wall collage out of all your baseball caps!
You know Mike, I think you should go to Germany every year and do your UA-cam channel from there. Split your UA-cam locations between Los Angeles and Germany. You could go to Belgium when you are in Germany and do your show and Luxembourg. How is Mom. I hope she is much much better.
I remember the Helms man! He had drawers of cookies & it was awesome as kids to buy a cookie or goodie yum yum from his truck! My mom used to take me into that store when it was full of dusty antiques. It was a high end goodwill store type before it was all fancy & pricey! Thanks for showing it i love it
Thanks Mike love Helms 😊 I could see one of those sectionals in your living room. You might have to knock down our next door neighbor wall. But what the hey.
So amazing imagine if you could live for hundreds of years, that would be the perfect decoration, yet whomever can have all that, at the end it all stays. Well at least you had it and hopefully enjoyed it. Great video
Random cool and I’m certain extremely expensive artifacts. If Mom ever can travel back to LA it would be something she’d love to see and spend a few hours. Love and respect to Mom in Germany 🇩🇪
This is such an amazing video. I absolutely love love history and growing up in Malibu all these tours you take us on are why I love your channel. Be well my friend PS anytime I find myself there time stands still. Wonderful
When I was a kid the Helms bakery trucks drove past our house. I always loved the cream puffs and to this day I think of them whenever I eat a cream puff.
I grew up in Culver City, but we could never afford that bread delivery, we bought Wonder bread from the market. I remember getting milk delivery called Foremost milk, and chocolate milk was a once in a great while treat ❤ That artistic furniture is for someone who has $ with a big house 😊 that capsule reminds me of the inside of the I dream of Jeannie bottle😊
I love to look at furniture of all kinds never know what you're going to walk into The Good The Bad and The Ugly oh well this was fun thank you so much for great video
Hello Mike beautiful lights chandeliers, fantastic glass table that seems to have quartz inside, then the round bookcase very nice ... lots of ideas I would have liked to see the clown🫣🫣🫣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣scene thanks for the video

Went there on a field trip in preschool in 1974! I remember they gave us some fresh French bread and that started my bread addiction 🤣 I can still remember the smell
Thanks for the tour Mike!! Its always fun to dream as you walk through such places. The Helms Man used to drive neighborhoods much like an ice-cream man. The baked goodies were a treat & the delicious smells were always free!!
This was great, Mike. Danke sehr! From 1974 - '77 I lived on Canfield Ave, just off Venice a little west of the Helms building. I vaguely recall that building being abandoned, but then gutted and only slightly remodeled so individual vendors could have booths inside. There was so much to see, and most of it affordable. Now, it all looks upscale, but still fascinating. Thanks for the tour. It brings back many memories of how that area used to be. I lived there when Culver City was still affordable, too.
Boy, I recall that when I was a child young kid going to school I was seen the bread truck and also donuts I live close to San Francisco at that time it was a good time

Probably will never see that type of “America” again and it’s sad
That needs to come back and come to Florida Long with the ice cream trucks in my city. Both sound good right now.

I wish that Helms Bakery was still around, they delivered right to your house. Bread was 5 loafs. for $1.00.
Lived out in the Valley in the 60s and could smell the Helm's man coming from a mile away 😋

The desert will be beautiful with blooms this year. I go to Borrego Springs outside San Diego
They strap you in to the Apollo capsule before naming the price so you don't blast off into space when hearing it....🚀
They sell that same SPACE SHIP "chill out room" in London furniture shops in Tottenham Court Road. Exact same 👍👍👍👍👍
