Really enjoyed your video, and I concur. Always looked down my nose at Vstroms - being a jack of all trades, cheap and soulless-a stepping stone if you like. That is until I rode one. By God-what a revelation. How could the mainstream mc media have missed it? Started with 650 a couple of years ago and purchased the 1000 a year ago. Love it to death. I've ridden everything from LC350s to Ducatis and I keep coming back to the big Strom. The handling is sublime, the torquey engine is amazing and, as you say, the brakes are very good. You won't get many people asking about your bike, and you may get some disparaging comments, but, that's the way I like it...best kept secret out there.

My experience was the same way. Was a skeptic about ADV bikes until recently attending a rather low-attendance Suzuki demo day, where I rode everything I could, back to back to back.
The revelation the V-Stroms are in comfort, pep, rock solid agility and confidence, and being such a satisfying machine at everything was an eye-opener for me. They don't set your hair on fire for any aspect of function, but they do satisfy for every aspect. The question is, would a rider rather be satisfied with every function of a DL1000, or be rather disatisfied with a handful of functions on another kind of bike that sets their hair on fire in one or two ways?
I think for long term, overall satisfaction is more valuable than a blend of dissatisfaction/annoyance with one hair-on-fire attribute thrown in.

Have you riden it off road on dirt tracks or sand ? I'm considering one of these but I really want it as an adventure bike and want to know how it holds up. Anyone know of a Paris/Dakar test of one of these ?

Gazza-usa you want the xt version if you want to take it off road, you will surprised just how light it feels and it is capable off road but you will need to add some extras skid plate for example oh and the ground clearance is a little low but apart from that off road is no problem.

I'd never considered the V Strom 1000 until my local dealer suggested I take one out for test ride. The bike provides a great riding position, it's comfortable and the bike feels really planted. I was never a fan of the big screens but what a difference it makes to motorway riding, completely protected making it easier to concentrate on the road ahead. The brakes are sharp and responsive and the V-Strom is still lots of fun around the a and b roads, and the 1000cc engine is really torquey. Anyway cut a long story short I bought one. You won't win many track days but the V-Strom is a great vfm bike that will perform well in any situation.

@@raywilliams9808 Dude you know he's happy. V Strom has a cult following. Everyone reps the 650 but for my money (if I'm going brand new) its the 1050 XT all day. The only thing it is missing that is useful is quick shifter. Thing is a beast. These older ones are great value for money going back to 2014, I have seen them in good condition as low as $5000 USD with some little mods on them. No one buys them because they're all fighting for used 650 XT @ $8000 USD. DUMB. Give me the big one.

Super awesome review of the 1,000cc V-Strom. I absolutely love my V-Strom 650 as a everyday commuter. You simply can't go wrong with it, being a everyday motorcycle, especially with the pannier system on it. I got my 650 going 80mph at 6,000 rpm in 6th gear the other day. I wouldn't do that everyday on that little 650, but at least it's capable of it. Keep the videos coming, love your content man!!

Already have an old 650, brilliant bike. Great review as usual, I think when you took the 4 cars at the start, you were confident with its grunt and handling, as I did when I rode one few years back, now new model out ... grab a bargain!

I currently ride the 2014 Vstrom 1000 and your review of the bike is spot on! The 20 liter tank will allow an easy 350 kms between stops and the comfort level is very good on long tours. I replaced the standard exhaust with a Yoshimura slip on, and the sound is perfect. Great review as always. Stay safe mate.

I test rode a CRF1000 then a Vstrom 1000 and within 2 mins of being on the strom I knew I was going buy it over the Honda, and I had my mind set on the honda for months beforehand. It is a comfy bike, my other bike being a K2 gixxer 1000 which I take when I need a power fix. The Vstrom to me seems to be happiest cruising at 130kph which only feels like 100, and the low down torque is amazing, no tickets yet though. Arrow slip-on without silencer is superb too. Nice vid. thanks

As someone who owns a 2014 vstrom 1000 the speedometer is off a easy 5 mph most of the time. Just passed 10k miles and I have few issues with mine. Love the motor but wish it was not as abrupt with the throttle especially at low rpms. The worst thing is the windscreen which may make me sell mine. I’m very tall person and even after putting almost $300 more into brackets and new screen it still stinks. The buffeting just kills me. Love the rest of the bike.

I have the 2014 Vstrom 1000ABS thta I bought new in a box in July 2017. I have 25,000km on it now. It is an amazing machine. It does everything really well. I'm 6ft 1' and have a long torso and had buffeting issues with the stock windscreen. I put on the GIVI Airflow and its nothing but smooth air at any speed. I would highly recommend one. I paid $10,500 for this bike new with a 5 year warranty. It is one of the best bang for the buck bikes out there. This summer i'm going to put electronic cruise control (MCcruise out of Australia) on it and it will be perfect. Good luck with your bike

I bought an '09' model 650 v-strom about six months ago and I love it. It deals wonderfully with the rough Australian back roads. My previous bike was a '05' suzuki gsx1400.
I have changed exhaust and air filter plus a few other goodies to toughen it up a bit. It's just a great comfortable all rounder for my mostly road riding.
I will definately be going for a late model 1000 next. The xt version looks like a good option
    With the tubeless spoked wheels.

Hi, great review as usual, thx!
Owning the 2017 V-Strom 650 I had a testdrive with the 1000 recently. Being enthusiastic about the chassis, in particular the suspension I finally felt unexpectedly disappointed by the engine! Appreciating the additional power and torque I ended up missing the cultivated and decent way the 650 delivers her's. At least with the individual I drove it felt as if the gear ratio of the 2nd and 3rd gear at least are to long. This means that you might end up at a hairpin in the alpes forced to get down to the first gear because the 2nd won't run round below 3000rpm which would mean almost 50 km/h which usually won't be the velocity you'll be with at the summit of a hairpin.
The clutch behaving reluctantly and Hard didn't make things better.
I didn't expect this disappointment. Considering to augment the 650 suspension by a Wilbers.

    Thanks for the video.
I had the 2013 650 version for 5 years from new.
Last year i made the stupid mistake of trading it in for a new 2017 model Yamaha Tmax 530 DX so called sports scooter.
I had only one reason to trade in the almost flawless 'Strom' - I get hand and wrist pain in my left hand when riding a manual transmission bike.
Hearing you say that this has a hydraulic clutch and that that's easier on your hand made me want to spit.... and cry.
I spent 1,350,000 Yen (ten thou quid) buying the Tmax, which is about 200,000 Yen more than your Strom.
I have spent the last 7 months - almost from the very moment I rode the Tmax away from the dealer with zero kilometres on it - wishing I had not changed the 650 Strom at all and telling myself that it's OK that I will lose money again when putting this Tmax on Yahoo Auctions for as much as I can get.
I did 5000 kilometres a year on the Strom, and 7 months after buying this current thing, it has less than 700 on it.
    Lesson?
If you have a Strom, don't allow yourself to swap it for a noisy and fuel inefficient Tmax, no matter how much the Tmax's good points (and there are plenty) tempt you. In the end, you will wish you had either tolerated the hand and wrist pain or swapped the 650 for something with a 'servo assisted' (?) clutch lever.
    Thanks for the good videos.

Try a throttle tamer. I have the same model with the same concern. The throttle tamer changes the wrist input at the first part of the twist. Really changed the bike for me. They are about 70 dollars and take 15 minutes to install.

We had the classic VFR 800 pre vtec and girlfriend found it very comfortable, the 1200 is a similar set up in peg height and she felt comfortable on it. Depends on height etc.More a sports tourer than Tourer in this age of sit up arm chair bikes, its a slightly more leaned forward but not aggresive. The 170 bhp is linear and smooth, will get you out of a sticky situation. The exaust bark note is great when the vtec kicks in at 5000rpm. The DCT version is meant to be quite a good experience also! I would have bought it but it was purely down to price as basic bike without luggage and extras was more expensive than the fully loaded FJR1300 we opted for at the time.Do still look back and wonder if i made right choice though, FJR great but the VFR sportier, best thing to do is give one a spin. TMF might review also. ;)

Are usually write a more off-road style bike with 21 inch wheel, however I find this bike incredibly nice to drive, safe in the knowledge That it is reliable and will still go down some green lanes if I want it to. Was considering the Africa Twin but got put off its because of its weight and tubed tires, And also I just hate to many electronics that could go wrong.

Test rode all 3... The Duc was FAST, GS was very nice, V-Strom honestly felt like the GS but was more comfortable for me.
I was going to choose the GS but brought the Suzuki home as the money I saved paid for crash bars, GIVI aluminum panniers, new riding gear and lots of fuel.

TMF, Thank's for another awesome review! I am looking at some leftover models of the DL1000 and the FJ 09. Both are priced around $8300.00, here in the U.S. Which of these two would make a better and more comfortable all arounder? I've been riding for most of my 55 years. Currently on a Versey 650 and spent the previous 15 years on a ZRX1200. The 650 is great, but I need a more torquey and powerful engine. Keep up the good work! Rich

+elitetileandstone tricky one - the FJ09 has a more modern/sporty feel about it, the Suzuki feels like a more serious bike - if you tour a lot then the Suzuki I would say (on comfort grounds), if not then the FJ09....both are great though, you won't be disappointed with either.

I own a 2017 vee and I love it. Can lug 2 up with some weighty luggage without a flinch and Its surprisingly quick too mid range 30- to illegal speeds with an easy twist. can tail my brothers zx9r on spirited overtakes with ease. I've added an inflatable bubble seat pads as I suffer with numb arse after an hour or so and it works a charm managed a 600 mile trip completly comfortable without too much fatigue 300 miles of that in p****** down rain too I'm totally confident in wet weather on this bike just a sore jaw through clenching which I always do when riding for some stupid reason. Rev assist and feather clutch is a god send in crawling heavy traffic also. Can pretty much ride round town rev and go sticking to 3rd though it can be a bit Twitchy/lumpy on slow corners if you're lazy with shifting that's vtwin torque for you. Sublime bike for the money.
