- After much speculation, here's the secret behind that fuzzy, upper-octave amazing guitar tone.
There are several theories out there, but here's the mystery finally solved!

This is Pulitzer winning levels of investigative journalism.
This solo alone is the whole reason why I fall in love with Epiphone Casino
Everyone should have one!
good God, i thought it was just me hahhahhahahahahahahahha
And the music of Gary Clark JR. for me also!
This is some high-level research man... Well done!!!
Knew it couldn't just be the amp and guitar haha!
He has like a 50% success rate with that one bend technique in the solo, it’s such a hard maneuver haha
What I like most about John Mayer is that he seem to really love playing for sake of playing and thoroughly enjoys explaining to others his thoughts on music and playing
Great work!! That ending and solo is so 80's Clapton, I love it.
Brilliant, one of my favourite solos of all time
AMAZING VIDEO!!!!
Bought a Cassino just because of this solo! And now downloaded the fuzz to my QC.
Thank you very much!
Always amazing content
Amazing!! Great work!
Great work!! So much insight
Great research!
The Tone Detective has arrived.
G'day Inspector.
Well done.
Fine work as always!
I appreciate that!
Love how much of a nerd Mayer is about his gear. He’s truly just a guitar player that sings.
Incredible work!
Awesome, thanks for the post.
Great detective work Alejandro!
Great video!!!
Something is about to get WAY more expensive on Reverb 📈
It is already expensive 🥵
That didn’t take long. The one available on Reverb is now gone. (After sitting for 2 months with no takers). 😂
@@s2seltaeb It's been sitting a lot longer than that lol, like 6 months at least. It was taken down and then re-listed. Shame it is an EU unit though.
@@JustinJeske wow, I believe it! That has got to be expensive to ship, too. I love how JM had a towel over it. 😂
Kudos to you man, well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the best solos I’ve ever heard.
Oh my gaaaaawd this is great
awesome! Mayer gearheads certainly appreciate the research!
Aaahmazing! Thanks for sharing❤⚡✌🏼💋
Hot tones !!
I really thought the overtone octavey thing was just volume/tone knob fuckery, which was how i had been approximating it this whole time, but this is pretty wicked
Nice work
And the answer is….pure unobtanium!!
From the time he was a kid, I said to myself, “that kid’s a guitar player. Then, I saw his debut on stage with Buddy Guy where he was playing the blues. “There you go kid. Good on you…”
Hey man! Great and informative video! Would the Fuzz Supreme also work in getting those live tones from the IGIJFL solo in Albany (Sob Rock Tour)?
Fair play Sherlock! Great detective work
Thanks, Joey!
Can you do a video with the supreme recreating the tones??
Impressive findings, thank you! Is this the same octave fuzz used when he is jamming at the end of "I don't need no doctor"?
Nope! That was a EHX Micro Synthesizer
Great work dude!!!
Any tips on getting the Wild Blue tone?
Middle pickup and a compressor will help
Any guesses as to the signal chain order with the psych loop? Also do you know of any possible differences between the JHS Supreme and the Psychedelic Machine fuzz circuits?
Wow, impressive work! (And I'm not even a musician.) Well done!
Thank you very much!
Is this about how he got the tone live? Because if so, I’m excited!!
Live and in the studio
I feel as though the TychoBrahe Octavia gets you in the same realm. Chicago Iron makes a very nice reproduction of that pedal!
I wonder how close the Behringer SF300 could get.
I would like to try that!
I tried with mine and rolling the tone knob and volume knob down on my Epi Les Paul. Kinda gets in the same ballpark :)
JHS supremes are about to fly off the shelves as a suitable replacement for cheap lol
This is some next level super-sleuth shit, nice job man!
So the JHS Supreme would be a good option for getting that sound without spending ~$2k, right? haha
Yes!
Supreme is too aggressive for this
@@111anthonym isn’t it the same circuit? Or at least a clone of?
MXR sub machine also a nice tame option.
@@111anthonym it's actually great for this
Brilliant! So in theory to get this tone you just need a pedal with a superfuzz circuit? Because he's obviously not using the vibe side of the pedal and the companion psych machine doesn't have the octave...correct?
Exactly! The fuzz in the Companion (Super Fuzz circuit) creates that upper octave fuzz tone
For the live setup, is this ts10 -> super fuzz? Or vice versa? (How does he replicate the cranked champ tone?)
On some occasions he stacked the Klon with he Psychedelic Machine
Inspector Gadget strikes again! 👌
Does anyone know where i can find the full concert for the gabby bergman clip at @4:17? i remember it was a pre tour show with a small crowd but i cant find it anywhere. if anyone could help me out? thank you
Aww man now they're going to be even more expensive haha
Yep I just ordered one 😂
The Behringer Super Fuzz is also based on the univox, months ago I tried it and for a moment I was convinced that I had found the tone, but that fuzz is too aggressive, could it be useful to combine a univibe pedal afterwards perhaps? or a compressor to limit it? i would like to try but i sold the compressor and i don't have a univibe. Congrats for the amazing research!
Have you tried rolling down the volume and tone?
@@mikkywhalan obviously 🙄
Mayer used a cranked Fender black panel champ/princeton for the solo in this video? Looked like a champ but is it a 65? 66?
Very high levels of gain, tone rolled off , volume slightly rolled off , and pulling on the notes , gives a similar tone
Any plug-in out there to replicate this?
I wonder if the Fulltone octafuzz would be similar sound too ? I know he used that pedal but not sure what songs he used it on. Thank you so much for this research id been wondering what Octive fuzz it was.
While both are "octave fuzz" pedals, the feel and the tone is reasonable different. Both great tones, for sure
All different tones within a certain range. Some had slightly more overdrive. Basically, don’t drive yourself crazy. Learn the riff properly with slight overdrive and a cathedral size reverb and you should be fine to impress normal people who could care less.
Came here from Instagram. Hope I win the Sabbadius vibe.
Yes, dimed Fender amps produce ridiculous tones.
Snap
Is it that he used a vintage casino and a old busted up small fender champion amp to get the tone? There was a video about it
There's something else 😎
I think it was a cranked vibroverb
You think fox tone fuzz can get close?
I would look for a Super Fuzz clone
This video could have been even better if you demo’d a few alternatives!
That'll happen
Ed Sheeran and this guy are the best!
probably important to recognize that cranking an analog preamp while recording can also have an affect on tone
So he only uses the Fuzz part of this?
Yep
@@JohnMayerGear what is the point of JM using the whole big box for this? Why wouldn't he just use a Univox?
nice sherlock vibes there. thanks man!
are you reachable over email somehow?
jmayergear@gmail.com
Literally everyon knew this already
Just buy a pigtronix octava and you will nail it 👍🏼
