my dad lived in a socialist/communist Soviet union for much of his life. He worked as a machinist in large factorie/s and says one of the reasons the idea doesn't work is because people are lazy. Nobody wants to work. You get paid the same if you slack or hustle. People had basically no motivation
What you just said is one of the bases of why socialism does not work, the people has no motivation to continue. Thank you for sharing your father's experience.
@Umut Işık Taghiyev where does your mother live right now?
"the road to serfdom; the profit motive, an example"
@Umut Işık Taghiyev You are sooo wrong. While there are selfish and disgusting people in all countries, capitalism has given more opportunities for people to better themselves than any other system. This is why people will do anything to get to America. There are many more success stories than failure stories. If you only watch American news, you won’t ever see that. You need to live here and get to know people. The ones on the news have plenty of opportunities, they just don’t want to put out effort. Most of them have grown up in the cycle of welfare, and expect that they should have the same things that “the rich folks got”, but without contributing to society. The American media is a major party in the disgusting group of humans. Free press in this country does not equal 100% truth.
@Umut Işık Taghiyev ye I agree , we can create a system where everyone is happy. The technology is getting better and better we can invent new systems, people would no need to work or only for maintain the machines and would get extra rewards I mean there are options but at this point people get exploited by this system

No matter what system there is, there will always be pros and cons as they are all based on humans with different ideas of how things should be, which is all according to how they were raised - selfish or giving, individualized or community-based. And everything can work if limits are in place to prevent the extreme from happening. So far, there are few places that have a perfect system worked out.
EXACTLY!! It all depends of education actually!!!
Conflating individual with selfish is a false equivalency due to the nature of survival.
@Down with Corporate Amerika Norway is very white and everyone works and those economies are propped up by heavy capitalist infrastructure.. Socialists in America want to sit on their ass and play video games all day. Government doesn't create wealth, it can only seize it.
I fully agree on what you said.
Can you share your opinion on democracy?
I am very curious about your opinion.
And to the OP there is no "perfect" system, only a system with proper checks and balances, properly executed and enforced. That problem we have now is that we don't have a free market, we have a corporate, state-ist market where the politicians are in bed with the big corporations. Those checks and balances aren't being implemented nor enforced

The road to communism is paved with good intentions and many unintended consequences.
well.....unintended by the masses anyway. Stalin for sure intended those massacres and millions dead from created famines.
Amen. That little sentence says it all. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The leaders start out with the ideals but when the money gets them they sell their souls to Satan. Just ask the politicians and new elite to give up their money so that they can be equal.
@@AN-gl3jx The real answer is that there will always be inequality, in whatever system. There will Always be poor and always be rich. So both Capitalist and Socialist at extreme is BaD
Thus, America is built on Creator model that the government doesn't give rights, but God/nature does. Government is to protect them. Capitalism is the closest to that in that you can't legislate nature/ natural law. One can only maximize its potential, thus, individuals will do this on their own, with others, and according to Their goals, not those of others. All this leaves out the church, which is the most efficient way to feed the poor and help folks, of course by free choice of others. Etc. "Pure capitalism" doesn't address the sick, blind, maimed, etc. (church does) but then Americans are some of the biggest givers in the world.
@Tycoon Playz How?
@Tycoon Playz Why is Capitalism to blame for ethnic cleansing and genocide?
@Tycoon Playz no it isn't. If two warring factions slaughter each other from historical and cultural differences, how can Capitalism be 'blamed' because it didn't prevent it? If most of the world was Communist, and a genocide occurred elsewhere, unrelated to the world's economic structure, would it be Communism's 'fault'? Of course not.
@Tycoon Playz I agree. The deaths which result from a system should only be counted if they relate directly to the system, and not governmental action. However, with Communism, the deaths from hunger/starvation *are* caused by government, because a) they have the ability to seize resources from the producers, and b) a government will typically mismanage resources even if it really tries not to, because it cannot possibly have all the information needed to respond to demands which shift and change every minute.

People keep talking about how socialism never evolves into communism cause the ones who promote it end up concentrating power to themselves instead of sharing it equally. True. But also capitalism which is supposed to let people have chances at class flexibility (moving up in class through working hard and smart) often times doesnt work, cause although markets are "free" they are run by titan companies that create monopolies that last for decades and squander the chances of any bright mind realizing a good idea.
That’s corporatism. A true capitalist model advocates for the free market (emphasis on free). Monopolies are constrictive, hence they compromise the markets freedom because as you said, they stunt innovation from less prominent businesses as they haven’t the resources to compete with such a behemoth corporation which strains their ability to survive. That’s why a truly free market actually requires (limited) government regulation, which may sound contradictory although you must consider that discipline grants freedom. For example, a person lacking discipline is but a slave to his human nature. His nature to over-indulge in pleasure, and chasing the dragon. If this same person indulges in the pleasure of say, heroine, for example, yes he is technically free from authority as he was granted the freedom to take such a substance, but is he really free when he has developed an addiction to something that could have been prevented had he been disciplined?

A country should only protect it's citizens. Not interfere between them and their belongings.
Liberalism, essentially.
Protection of human rights, physical safety of citizens, and protect their rights to basic needs, and be democratic (not being political, but both conservative and liberal political parties in Western democratic societies have technically speaking, both adopted liberalism as their ideology because it promotes free market capitalism, and as this vid explains, it works fairly well, but some are moving to a combination)
@@Person-ng5hp Wrong, Capitalism. It's stupidly thought of as a system of govt instead of economy...two different things misunderstood by those who live in it the most.
@@michaellemaster5087 the ideology of liberalism _promotes_ capitalism. It's practically impossible to have capitalism without liberalism. (Imo, centrally planned capitalism or authoritarian capitalism isn't real capitalism.)
Combination of capitalism and socialism,i.e a Mixed Economy will work well for betterment of the economy as a whole.
A pure capitalist economy may give full authority to private individuals which will lead to unwanted chaos due to misuse of power.
If government is to not interfere with thier belongings, then how do they collect taxes?
Meanwhile, corporate profits are up as well are as executive bonuses. Meanwhile wages are stagnant.
Corruption exists in all forms of gov't. Enough is never enough, and it seems that only those whom have done without care about the plight of they that suffer in poverty.
They gave themselves big raises after getting their taxes reduced
wages are up. What report are you reading? In 2019 wages for the low and middle class went up faster than any other group... thus, also the lowest unemployment rates in 50 years. Under Obama (socialism) wages went down from 54k to 50k and insurance went way up.
2. IF you don't like your job, you are free to market yourself to higher paying folks, start your own business (then you will see how much big gov really takes) etc. and are not limited to what you are assigned.
@@paulspringer3303 Real wages Paul. Real wages have been stagnant for decades whilst the real wages of upper management have sky rocketed. I'm also genuinely very interested in what policies of Obama you know of that were socialist.
@@Esafc-lb2sg most low wages were due to the bad trade deals of the past 20 years that Trump reversed and lower wages grew faster than middle as well as low unemployment.
you are kidding about Obama right.... ummm "Obamacare" was about as big gov socialist as you can get...
In 2008, Joe the Plumber correctly identified Obama’s policies as socialistic when Obama responded to Joe’s question concerning the candidate’s small business tax policy by saying, “when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” This statement is a foundational tenant of socialism straight out of Marx’s Communist Manifesto.
It is NOT the governments job to 'spread the wealth' nor to try to produce 'income equality' but rather a fair playing field of laws, and just a few of them at that.
Trump repealed 22 regulations for every one that was implemented... less government, less control, less redistribution according to a bureaucrat.

Why's that so?
@@apeksha229 Because his teachers tell him that capitalism is racist and evil but logic tells him that's how society has flourished and made it this far. Whenever he researches communism or socialism, he reads of totalitarian governments that enslave people and destroy free societies.
I like capitalism. Capitalism is good. You get what you earn. You work hard, get paid hard. No work no pay.
@@kagetm5870 in capitalism, those who owns the copyright and property terms earn the profit while the employees don't get shit for what they do except for wage. That is simply wage slavery.
@@plankalkulcompiler9468 that's because they(owners) run the company investing money in it and have taken loans for it and thus they should get the incentive for that risk. If the employees decide their salary is not enough they can always quit and start their own company and get the money that they want. Running companies is so hard and risky that people just don't do it thus they get monthly salary while entrepreneurs get the majority money for their risk and hardwork.
Unions and the government can provide minimum wage and job security but that does not mean it's socialism, it's just security for the employers by the employers or with the help of government. This does not make any of this socialism as socialism does not have explicit right to ideas of supporting the people living in the country.
So briefing would be like
1. Capitalism is basically modern economics and the way money is generated in the global market(in the world)
2. Democracy is the rule of the people by the people so minimum wage and job security can be chosen by the people themselves.
3. Communism is just the worst economic system as it always failed. China is a capitalist society with socialist politics and governance.
4. Socialism generally is very authoritative in nature. Ex: strong censorship of media, single party, government not tolerating criticism from the people
5. Communism is basically dictatorship(of the proletariat, dictatorship nonethless)
Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, etc. are NOT socialist at all. They are market economies with a social safety net. Welfare systems and social ownership of the economic means of production are two entirely different things.
EVERY Nordic country has NO minimum wage. They have lower corporate taxes, and less red tape (freer markets), allowing for more people to avoid paying high income taxes by opting to invest it into the economy themselves. This leads to more economic growth without the need for government to get involved in trying to stimulate it. It's the exact OPPOSITE of how socialism works.
1. Strong labor unions pretty much help out labor when it comes to wages.

You forgot to mention Chile, 1970. A Democratic Socialist country that was doing just fine until America invaded them.
Kwispee Kweem depending who u ask, Democratic socialism is technology under capitalism but it’s definitely very mixed with socialism and capitalism factors. I personally believe the Democratic socialism is the best economic system as it gives people the right to live a ok life, with fairly good life style, but it also rewards those who want to do better then just average. Their nothing wrong with being average, but if individuals want to make their life more independence of the government then they should. That’s true economic freedom ( the choice to depend on the government or be independent). It very sad that not that many countries followed this economic system. Maybe in the future.
That's a lie. Chile in 1973 was broken. Was the poorest country of all Latam. And it was not fault of the US. Allende expropiated everything, and he was making an aside army. In 1973 Chile was worst than actual Venezuela.
But as all Socialist say: "it was not my fault. Other people did it".

You mention the corruption of socialism but not that of capitalism which implies that capitalism doesn’t encourage corruption which it absolutely does in the real world.
Davin Anderson imo: Capitalism self-corrupts (powerful entities use force against competition). Socialism is the corruption of the ‘state’. How would you define, compare & contrast corruption capitalism vs socialism?
JimzAuto capitalism does not self corrupt because corruption is bad for free and fair markets.
@@davinanderson2003 The primary corruption of capitalism is getting in bed with the government. The primary corruption of socialism is that the government is the whole bed. The question is, which system provides the best containment of that corruption.

Keep in mind that the general public has a very inconsistent understanding of these terms, particularly "socialism". Someone like Bernie Sanders would actually be what is called a "Social Democrat", which means he thinks individuals and corporations should continue to own the means of production, but the government should aggressively redistribute wealth and provide regulation. You might be saying to yourself, "but the USA already redistributes wealth and has regulation" and ding ding ding that's right - the U.S. is already a social democracy to a certain extent.
I look at all countries as on a continuum between pure capitalism and pure communism. Every country is somewhere on the continuum between those two poles. They steal money from those who work hard to have a house and a car, and give 10% to the people who don't try hard to work and rely on the government and become wordless, worthless people. They keep 90% of their money in their pockets.

The means of production are owned by the people under socialism, not by the government. Why would productivity decrease under socialism? For example, publicly funded COVID vaccines are an example of socialism in a vacuum. The incentive to innovate is the betterment of society.

Wonder if these professors of economies could, ever produce a video on the difference between globalism, nationalism, republics, agorism, & anarchy? And the importance and freedoms expressed with each.
The global scientific capitalism, the capitalist, the capitalist ruler, the capitalist citizen, the capitalist thinker, the capitalist explorer, the capitalist philosopher and the capitalist revolutionary are citizens who do not want to see the poverty, underdevelopment, divisions and war on the earth. The global capitalism will end poverty, underdevelopment and war on Earth and in global capitalism the people of the world will begin to live as one nation all over the world. It can be called the era of beauty. In global scientific capitalism, man will start living as a young man for over 150 years.
Well explained!
This was very simple to understand, thank you.
I understand that this is a very simplified description but the practical truth in the west is somewhat different. Today, the employer does not have the 'right' to keep all of the excess profit because the employer/employee relationship is by way of social contract in the same way as any other contract. That is to say that neither has the right to 'impose' a legal contract on the other and it only becomes legal by the agreement of both parties. An employee can revoke a contract in the same way as an employer without breaking the law. Otherwise, it is internationally deemed to be slavery. Socialism also appears when public money (the taxpayer) is used to bail-out the financial sector in a financial crash (2007/8). This is in fact inverted social-security for the capitalist system when capitalism itself would demand that the banks should fail; so you can see that in a modern society, capitalism is actually supported by socialism. Communism is very different from Socialism because the financial sector is government-run from public funds from the get-go. Anything involving support from public funds (the taxpayer), including the military, is 'socialism' unless you have a privately funded army (feudalism). Therefore, claiming that we can be either/or capitalist or socialist is an illusion; we are both but we are definitely not communist. I am not a capitalist nor a socialist but neither is anyone else. It is all political myth devised to promote the confrontational system of party politics. A better description of modern economics throughout the west would be 'social capitalism' no matter what party is in power. The alternative is communism.
Socialism isn't just "the government does stuff", rather the focus should be on who it is that owns the means of production. Market economies and socialist economies are not mutually exclusive, as demonstrated by Yugoslavia's system of market socialism, where the means of production were owned by worker co-ops.
You nailed it!
Thanks for posting, good video.

Social Democratism, which is in fact a capitalist system, based on keynesian economics.
Can someone explain this to me in Allied & Soviet Warfare terms?
I always considered a blend of Capitalism and a pinch of Socialism to be ideal. The socialism is there to keep the tyranny in check for it can be expected of the overwhelming wealth to sometimes get in one's head, plus to cushion the one's at the lower end of the hierarchy.
@Technews it's based on the same spirit of socialism, that doesn't make it socialist though. For a regime to be socialist it has to have no privately owned enterprises. So social democracy is NOT socialism.
You're right that what you're describing is called a social democracy though. Which is what Bernie Sanders and AOC's 'socialism' are.
Ganesh Prem Well no form of modern capitalism doesn't have a 'pinch of socialism'. Raw unabated capitalism simply doesn't exist. Why? Because it's terrible. Monopolies are more than enough reason to conclude that.
The debate is as to how much capitalism should be restricted. If we need to restrict it severely, we may as well switch to a socialist system with capitalist ideas. E.g. Having monetary incentives

It's hard to enforce because their money buys influence over political attempts to curb their power in any way. Capitalism will fail because it is a class-based system. People are spiritually incompatible with class based systems. The problem with class based systems is that they are fake. Rich people aren’t stronger, smarter, more moral, or prettier than poor people. Yet class is used as a signifier to deny people basic human rights. The easiest way to make sure that people are treated fairly is to abolish classes. Until that happens, there will always people who criticize the system for its obvious flaws.
Short and Sweet intro thank you x
I was looking to intoduce my teenage child to political theories in a simple non-boring way. This one is perfect
Wow, I learned more from this video than our philosophy class we had last time.
The truth is that "socialism" in the real world never evolved past the dictatorship of the proletariat and then, with stalin, devolved into state capitalism. Socialism (or lower phase communism as marx called it) in marxian theory is inherently stateless, as the state is defined as the tool of one class to exert its will onto the other. An extension to that might be political classes that became apparent in the soviet union, china and north korea, the party members who gain special rights by being a party member (even some capitalist countries have this class as politicians gain a certain immunity to the law) A socialist (to use the leninist distinction of lower phase communism (marx) = socialism (lenin) and higher phase communism (marx) = communism (lenin)) society would also not operate on the basis of money, which is still existent in all those nations. Furthermore, socialism cannot exist in only one country as it has to be international to fully abolish the need for profit (as the exchange for essential resources with a capitalist country will be capitalist in nature).
This video adheres to the neoliberal propaganda of socialism being state control, which is only true for the phase between socialism and capitalism - the dictatorship of the proletariat.
As socialism is classless, it is inherently stateless (per the marxian definition of state) and thus cannot function on state control.
Btw marx did not "feel" it was "unfair". This phrasing does not deal justice to his extentive research and criticism on and of capitalism
@@phmmpaulo No. After WW2 USA talked shit about stalin and ussr to protect their country to be the top
I think the main issue with this I find is that the definition of socialism has changed over time. I’d say not in a good way really, because socialism means near nothing anymore, but to say that socialism must mean a stateless society isn’t correct anymore. I wouldn’t call it propaganda, I’d say it’s closer to just how definitions change over time
Gaming Tacos and even then it is not quite true. Sure, we can move away from marxist theory but we are still seeing socialism as an inherently anti-capitalist system. Retaining Capitalist relations like wage labor or commodity production, as the soviet union did, does not make them socialist. There is detailed research on this which i am not even going to try to explain (including that socialism and communism would have to be exactly the same today, but no guarantees). So considering that people still refer to China or the Soviet Union as socialist, which is a lie invented by the US government in the cold war in order to weaponize the term as something bad, it is neoliberal propaganda, just like (and i have really seen people do this) calling any service provided by the government "socialism". Changing definitions according to material analysis and conditions, sure, but not because a lot of people are incapable of educating themselves on the topic
Nikolas Tesla ok yes I see what you mean better now. I didn’t realise that that propaganda was neo-liberal (as I don’t live in USA, and am still not entirely sure what neo-liberal means), and that that was the cause of the change in definition, rather than an effect of the changes definition
REALLY well explained, Dropped a like!
@LondonCityGirl Thank You. This was so perfectly explained..
Unfortunately not all people are equal. Capitalism is the American dream, the ability to be whatever you want. We need less government.
It's not that simple. The aim of socialism is not strictly to make everyone equal, it's to eliminate the dynamic of having an oppressive and oppressed class. According to the labor theory of value, for every dollar someone makes without working, someone somewhere is working without getting paid that dollar. This means that a CEO of a company who makes millions without themselves working is doing so at the direct expense of the workers. The workers are paid a wage that does not reflect the amount of value that they produce, but rather how replaceable they are. Socialism is where the workers own the means of production. Therefore, in socialism, a factory (or something like a company) is controlled by the workers democratically, and each worker either gets an equal share of the factory's earnings or gets paid based on the value that they produce. In either case, the worker makes significantly more than under capitalism. Under socialism, you can still be whatever you want. Labor is not mandatory, but it is guaranteed. The only thing that is barred is being a business executive- that is to say that you would no longer be able to exploit people. The last thing you said is that we need less government. Depending on who you ask, communism is stateless so that satisfies your want there.
i agree with your idea of a smaller state ( i am an anarchist-communist) however, to quote chomsky, "the reson its called the amarican dream is because you have to be asleep to believe it". you cannot do what you want, not realy. although you might get ten brands of food at the store instead of one, you cannot do the job you want, get the education you want, life where you want, or even have the rights to a livable lifestyle. what is the right to have a sports car if you dont even have the right to food?

I just noticed a glaring mistake in the explanation. Under socialism, people wouldn't be compensated according to their needs. The basic tenet of socialism (as set by Karl Marx, I think) is "From each according to their ability, to each according to their contiribution".
@Davin That would be true for the final stage, communism. In the transitional stage, people get paid according to contribution.
Ah, gotcha. I only know the bare minimum of Marxist theory, and assumed Marx had come up with both tenets.

True capitalism lets businesses fail ,no bailouts
Roof fucking exactly. Once you bailout businesses who show they cannot hold up in the current economic climate that is socialism for the already wealthy.
True capitalist governments make corporations pay tax.
bboyenergetic that’s because capitalism in its roots is completely broken and doesn’t work. There are people suffering today in America, there are people poor today in America. Lots of them. Even before the pandemic. Capitalism only works with bandaids. Once those bandaids break loose you just keep adding more. That’s why we have an economic recession every decade. The system itself is broken. The bandaids they use to fix it (bailouts) are basically just what socialism would be but instead it only goes to wealthy businessmen. Instead of the people who are poor. That’s the problem with capitalism. It will never be a perfect system because it’s broken in its roots. It’s a bunch of broke people who owe money to a bunch of broke companies who owe money to a wealthy person.

Sorry Norman, Capitalism
and Democracy don`t go well together.
Democracy, also called popular government, is a form of government where the people have direct or indirect influence on what kind of decisions are made.
Characteristics of democracy are free elections, majority rule, the right to disagree with the majority, and the protection of the fundamental rights of individuals.
Gerrymandering is not free election,
and you have big errors in your election systems, which even the politicians would
like to change, but some states would not
allow. Then you have the senate with sales of votes by unfaithful politicians.
So it is not only to educate voters.
To make it short,
you don`t have free elections.

Democracy working is a fallacy as the majority just override the rights of the minorities. If all segments had equal rights and representation that would be democracy. Everyone just looks out for themselves. There is a concept called a stokvel where people put there money and efforts together to buy something. This system would have worked brilliantly in countries like South Africa as the man on the street would then be the owner and worker on his own farm, factory, business.

Free market capitalism isn't failing it's just losing the free market aspect because of government interference. Capitalism is being disrupted by corrupt politicians who want to do favors for some businesses to the detriment of competing businesses in exchange for money for their political campaigns.
We created that Dynamic when we gave too much power to the government. That power led to corrupt opportunistic politicians using the power of their elected office to enrich themselves and their business buddies.
The government is supposed to be an independent referee making sure that everybody follows the law and honors their contracts. Government is not supposed to participate in the free market competition by picking winners and losers by helping some businesses over others.
The solution is to reduce the power of government because if the government doesn't have the power to do favors for some businesses then the possibility for that corruption is eliminated.

Mixed economies are the way to go nowadays
I think the best type of economy is a mixed economy (which is what most countries have).
Certain goods and services are seen as common goods, and are thus provided using the redistribution of wealth in the form of taxes. For a lot of countries education, medicine, and military and legal protections are seen as common services everyone should receive.
In the U.S., we have national and state militaries, state appointed lawyers for those who don’t have a private lawyer, and public education for primary school.
The trick is figuring out how to maintain those systems through economic, technological, and social change. As well as managing the natural incentives of capitalism to create rampant wealth inequality.
Unfortunately for the U.S., we’ve failed to do both.
