    Dude was completely soaked in cocaine and other drugs, absentee father and mother, spoiled, no real talents or abilities other than his family fortune. it’s really tragic that Dave Schultz had to be the one to pay for his psychosis. This IS one of the best films I’ve ever seen however.

      The duPont family are all inbred. They're that gross elitist old money type who have to keep marriages in the family to keep the fortune and property in the family. The man never had to live a real life, and he was a spoiled brat. I'm not surprised his delusions took him over and went full nutbar. It's a tragedy that a good person was taken away from this world over it.

      Also because if this is any indication of what actually happened (I wouldn't know.), it just shows how unhinged John is, that's a very abrupt point to open fire, and a very disheartening one considering David was in complete surrender and de-escalation mode, John just was not having it and could think of nothing but fatally wounding David in the least. The fact this really happened, who this happened to, and how, is all scary fundamentally. The directors just put the icing on top by delivering it to us so well dramatically.

    The sound design is an underrated part of this scene. Movies so often have gun shots at about the same volume as dialogue, maybe slightly louder, but not uncomfortable. But real guns aren't like that, they're jarringly loud. People shooting real guns for the first time often wince from the noise. Despite being an experienced shooter myself, I actually winced the first time I saw this. They've got the sound of the gun shots dialed up to 11, and its totally unexpected compared to every other movie out there.

      Did you watch the documentary or see his daughter's statement about how it affected her? Every person there said that Dave was someone that John respected, looked up to, and was acting as a support to. He knew that it was not a good situation, but one that was under control because of the long history they had. There's home recordings before the shooting where you see all of the wrestling team hanging out around "this sick maniac" and everyone is laughing. @stirange got it right, it's a tragedy and there were warning signs. This wasn't a premeditated attack, more like a slow decline of mental health that was ignored or not noticed until there was a snap. He never made a deal with the devil, he put his future, family, and faith in someone that cared about and wanted to fund those things. Don't pretend like this was something else because you only saw the last half of the movie

    Steve Carell became John du Pont in this film. A truly incredible performance. I wish he won the Academy Award, but I think we time goes on, this film and performance will be more remembered in very positive light. Seems to be an underrated film and while this film did take liberties, especially by having the Schultz brothers being on the farm at the same time likely to show their brotherly relationship that might not be shown very well if shown as it actually happened and I do wish we saw more of du Pont’s decent to what made him do this. We see hints of it in the film, though it does show how people didn’t expect him to kill anyone. He was odd and did need help with his drug and alcohol usage, on top of whatever else was wrong with him mentally, but people didn’t think he would kill anybody. There does exist a 4 to 4 and a half hour cut of this film that Bennett Miller has talked about here and there. So, in a way we’re seeing just about half of what Miller intended to show as he found that cut to be fine to show in front of an audience. I hope we get to see that on Blu-Ray at some point, perhaps released by the Criterion Collection with the theatrical cut. Regardless, this is a great film and with this film it lead to some documentaries being made about the events on Foxcatcher so we can hear the real story in addition to the feature film version that takes liberties while showing the overall decent of John du Pont as well as how the Schultz brothers interacted with each other. I hope this film will be looked at more favorably by audiences as time goes by.

His performance was unremarkable, and you could argue that is because the man he's portraying is unremarkable, but no, it's because Steve Carrell isn't one of those comedic actors who can transition into serious like a Tom Hanks, like a John C Reilly. The bodyguard was hired to protect DuPont from people, he most likely never thought he would have to protect people from DuPont. By the time the three rapid fire shots were fired from the gun the security guard could not see from his position and did not know was there until it went off it was too late to do anything but jump out of the car to avoid being shot.
      The guard went to schultz to administer first aid and aimed a pistol at DuPont who had lowered his gun which technically removed the threat in the situation making it impossible for the security guard to legally shoot at the now unarmed and non threatening DuPont. You have watched too much CSI.

    • @DS-wl5pk
      @DS-wl5pk Рік тому +1

      @@From-North-Jersey I watched to much CSI to observe the fact that it is entirely possible for a man who has the time to react and tell another man to put the gun down, while sitting right next to him in an enclosed space. A younger, healthier man who apparently had experience? I’ve watched too much CSI for observing the facts and concluding that as it was portrayed in the movie, the guard could have very much prevented at least the second shots from going off had he done something instead of get out?
      If it happened differently irl, well doesn’t matter because I’m reacting as it’s portrayed in the movie. If he was also armed, honestly that makes the lack of action that much worse. Objectively, no one needs to watch csi to conclude that doing nothing while having all the means to do something, is a thing one should shame others for. Yes, you should feel bad about your lack of action that may or may not have saved another life, we aren’t talking about random joe, he apparently had experience. He isn’t put to the same standard as a random person.
      And yes, you can shoot someone who still has a gun and just shot someone, I think cops call it “felony fleeing” or something, basically if they’re afraid you’re gonna get away and still pose a threat to the safety of them Or others, exact situations being people who just shot at someone, still posses the weapon and are running.
      He would’ve been completely justified and I find it stupid you’d think you’d find a court who’d have prosecuted him at that time, under those circumstances “man shoots and kills another man, another man shot the shooter, he now faces charges” especially once it’s found out he still had the gun.
      Don’t go and get yourself shot in the face thinking you cannot defend yourself from someone wielding a weapon, especially if they just just used to it to attack someone

    I imagine that the first reaction when they announced a comedy guy such as Steve Carell to perform Du Pont might've sounded like a non-sense choice. But I think it was a clever casting move. Not just because Steve is an amazing actor but because the more I see this film the more I found similarities between John and another role performed by Carell himself: Michael Scott. Just think about it. They're both kind of losers looking for external approval using their power position to achieve it. Du Pont is just the tragic flip-side of Scott.

    You can see the moment that in (his mind) he realizes he’s been played by Dave and the one thing of value he got out of all of this (a real friend, a lover) has been robbed from him, in exchange for an illusion that doesn’t matter (his status as coach) mocked by the truth he now realizes everyone knows (that Dave is the real coach). So outwitted, alone, and humiliated (again, some in his head, some of it true- as Dave most certainly is playing along in this dangerous game) this repressed man is now ready to kill, in self-defense- of his own inner demons, and against the very predatory system of wealth that makes him as much a victim as everyone involved. That empathy is what Carrell expresses so well, by hardly saying a word, in the hands of a master filmmaker, saying everything.

    • @apotsmokinjedi
      @apotsmokinjedi Рік тому

      if you sympathize with a billionaire psychotic who MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD a loving husband, brother, and father of 2 then you seriously need to think about that trail of thought and what it says of you. The victims are DAVID SCHULTZ and HIS FAMILY, there is no actual evidence of David being his "lover" so to imply that is to misrepresent a dead mans identity, and third there is no such thing as a predatory system of wealth that would make him, a near billionaire, any kind of victim especially to the point of mental or emotional "self defense" what the hell are you talking about? When someone's feelings get hurt and they shoot someone its called MURDER, no if ands or buts, and they should be punished for it to the fullest extent. Trying to victim blame Dave by saying he "most certainly is playing along in this dangerous game" as if even if someone manipulating your emotions (not what actually happened) would justify, excuse, or help to understand why you would then take a loaded gun with you when you chose to "confront" your perceived aggressor. The only reason he would bring the gun is because he was at the very least going to intimidate Dave, which means he understood its a deadly weapon therefore proving he could not have been insane in the moment.
