This documentary about Stein, Shankly and Stein - The Football Men is one of the most passionate programmes about football ever. It's not just what he says but how he says it. Not just a great writer but a great speaker. RIP Hugh
RIP Mr. McIlvanney. A peerless sportswriter, and equalled by very few as an observer and orator. This series stands as a testament to the greatness not only of the three subjects, but also the man behind the portraiture, and the environment that produced them all. Best football documentary ever made.
Now THIS is how you make a documentary, regardless of subject matter. The BBC was already losing its way even when this programme was first broadcast, now we are treated to so much garbage from those who are meant to educate and entertain us.
That Celtic team - The Lisbon Lions - were the greatest team this wee island has ever produced, and all born within 30miles of Celtic park!

Great to see Hugh and William together--brothers who were masters in different spheres of writing
William wasn't exclusively a sports writer, but he was equally as masterful as Hugh on the subject. If you haven't seen it, I can only recommend William's 1986 series on Scottish football. Just as wonderful as this.

The BBC Arena opening titles are the best of all time. A perfect metaphor of what television can and should do - bring a little slice of the world straight into your front room.
According to sir Alex Ferguson, big Jock was the greatest manager who ever lived. Us Celtic fans already knew that

28th, 29th and the 30th March 1997 for all three episodes.
but they were unwilling to give him the control over the team that he wanted and he took the vacant manager's job at Manchester United instead. Some info the doc missed...
weird how the great managers, daglish and SAF included are all scottish.
Beyond me why Bill Shankly never got knight hood or Bob paisley or kenny dalglish atleast one of them should have been.

No offense but your talking rubbish. Stein was a bully when needed. Shankly was ruthless when needed and Busby got rid off players who crossed him repeatedly . These are all traits inherent in Ferguson which is not suprising given all four men came from the same place, that's the point of the documentary.Shanks talks about Arrogance being an awful work but then he claimed only 2 teams in England Liverpool and liverpool reserves! I can imagine the outcry if Ferguson proclaimed the same now !
Shankly was, of course, joking. When talking seriously he showed respect for his opponents (when they deserved it).
