If I drove to a car lot today and they had any one of these trucks in brand new condition I would choose any one of these old trucks over today’s models.
I get behind the wheel of a 73-87 Chevy and it feels like I’m home. I drove those for years and years and will always have a fondness for them. But I wouldn’t pick them over my 2019 under any circumstances.
Ive been building a brand new 86 c10 for the last 10 years lol. I thought old trucks always had a lot of road noise until i put new window and door weatherstripping in.
Especially if you could take it home for 3000 or less. I'd do that Chevy with a 454, 4sp 4:10 gears and limited slip

@Matt H When you consider a new transmission for my 2019 Ford F150 10 speed is over $4000 to rebuild Who knows how much to replace? Ia transmission in my 74 Ford ranger only cost me 1200 it ends up being cheaper to drive an older vehicle that’s in good condition and well-maintained. I’m not aGear head but I know it’s cheaper to take my 74 Ford to a shop then it is my 2019 Ford. Plus I like the aesthetics of the older trucks. If you buy one of those trucks today it would be cheaper to keep it on the road in the new trucks out today.
My dad bought that same Chevy when I was 9 years old. I learned to drive with it.

I had a 75 Chevy Beauville van back during the 80's. Drove that thing to hell and back. One of the most durable and reliable vehicles I've ever had.

Until scrap metal prices skyrocketed really high and the yard sold all it's inventory.
I bought a brand new 1976 F250 camper special with a 460. Man it was a great Truck. I always thought the Chevy looked better but that Ford hauled many a trailer's with no problems. Good times

I love these commercials that they make the opponent's vehicle look really bad like the guy was pounding on the roofer of the Ford and then he barely touched the roof on the Chevy. I grew up with these things in the 90s in northern Michigan. And I still drive them to this day that's all I run. They both rusted the Chevy little bit more than the Ford. I've had them alll Chevy Ford and Dodge. I praised them all and cussed them all. And I still won't own a truck newer than 86.
Chevy is still the smoothest riding truck I've ever owned. Never owned a Ford, but driven many. I currently own 3 dodges, the Chevy, and a Toyota. Chevy rides better than all of them.
They all break though.
..yes, when they gained computers(even basic ones) and plastic headlights, that is my cutoff date...I hated plastic headlights then, still do..It shocks me to see people pilling the nice glass sealed beams out of their 90's-2000's Jeep wranglers and XJ's, pickups and sticking those awful looking plastic replacements with the rows of little LED's in them :(

Oh man, most of those plastic LEDs are absolute junk. And, you can but higher wattage lights or throw some KC Daylighters on top if you desire.
The comparable model to the C10 would have been the F-150... They wouldn't want to compare apples to apples or anything like that now.
@@noneofyourbusiness3553 ..no, the comparable model to the C-10 would have been the F-100..I don't think the F-150 came along until around 1976..The F-150 was mostly born as a way to raise the GVW just above the threshold of having to use a catalytic converter..a way of skirting the emissions requirements of automobiles...the Chevy "Big 10" was Chevrolet's version of this...not sure what year it debuted...maybe 1977?....

I recall when my older brother got a Chevy 3/4 (three-quarter) ton Custom pickup in 1974. The nice aspect of going with the 3/4 ton rating was with the commercial vehicle classification it had when it came to engine smog equipment: It had none.
He worked as a Chevy dealership mechanic at the time; and with the access he had to accessory pieces, he rebranded the Custom model to a Cheyenne version. That bit of deception bothered me. It was also a hint of the person he became in later decades.

As someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s I can say that living through those times no way would you say that was the good all days. Every one was poor and struggled to make a living. Looking back after 30-40 years all you remember are the good times and what now seems like a simple time in history. much like the time you’re living in now, you would say no way is it the good ol days. but in 30 years you’re gonna look back and say man! The birth the Internet and cellphones all that stuff was the good all days!

No they weren't, my Dad was an enlisted man in the Navy(which aint exactly a high paying job), and we weren't poor, we weren't rich either, but we didn't lack for anything.... OMG, this stuff was complete sh*t when it came out. I can remember my dad bringing home the new company vehicle and we were all dumbfounded when he could not shut the car horn off. He had to pull the wires from it to get it to stop honking. A fricking brand new vehicle from Chevrolet. Or all of the paint that peeled off of the previous 4 year old company vehicle from chevrolet. Please don't kid yourself, this stuff was poorly made and it did not always stay running.
Those were the days, we would go to grandma's house on Sunday. After about 2hrs it never failed. One uncle drove a Chevy, one uncle drove a Ford. Always ended with them fighting over which truck was the best. Those were the good ole days. Lol

@Carla-tz7qw Now that you mentioned it, yes. Nobody bragged about Dodge trucks until much later when they borrowed the Cummins. Lol. The only Dodge truck people might've bragged about was a half-ton D/W100 equipped with a 318 C.I. V8, but that was about it pre Cummins as far as bragging goes.
Time tested years later.... Those Ford's were trucks, Chevy's were just pickups! Everything about comparing these two vehicles would tip Ford's way, Period! GM's were always lighter duty comparing similar years. Frames would twist, less leaf springs for the similar rating, 350 V8's were more problematic, front ends were lighter duty (hence the ping pong test proved that), they rusted out faster than a 2nd gen Dodge truck, weak transmissions, and lighter 4x4 straight front axles than Ford or Dodge. Guess one could say the people that decided on purchasing the Chevy's are a bit like the people that voted for Biden over TRUMP, just could not see the major differences between the two.......no common sense!
Now days additional features cost more than this 70's trucks

My dad had a 76 GMC Van with the 400 4 barrel. I took it to high school once and removed the engine cover and took my friends for a drive so we all could watch the 4 barrels opening up. Good times.

I love how they say the Chevy is built to prevent rust. Let me tell you, a 1974 Chevy would rust off the frame within 3 years. I know as my family had one.

@Jeff Ring I had a 75 GMC Sierra that you had to hold your feet up if you hit a waterhole in the road to keep your feet from getting soaked.
So they rusted a lot. Sounds like everybody is in agreement. So what caused the rust? A Cost cutting measure they conveniently didn’t mention here? Anybody have any ideas? I’m curious as to everyone’s thoughts since a lot of the commentators here had one in their lives

LOL I thought that way at one time. I had a 63 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 283 4 speed trans.It could not do what my 97 4.6 ford F150 could do work wise and the ford wasn't torture to drive.That just isn't a ford vs Chevy situation.Go back just one year to 96 and I would want nothing to do with the 150, and I'm sure the 63 ford would be a joke as well when compared to modern trucks.
Robert Presti Jr but it’s all they had back then and they seemed to get a lot of work done with them. I guess when that’s all you know and all you got they seemed great. Of course those old vehicles weren’t as safe as today’s vehicles if you got in an accident. There’s pros and cons in everything but it seems a half ton pickup today will do what a 3/4 ton will do today just a lot of of plastic in today’s vehicles and more complicated. I tell you one thing, I don’t miss working on carburetors and distributor points.

@@100texan2 The flip side was that any joe blow could figure out a carburetor in a day or two. Today you pretty much have to be an engineer to do any serious work on a modern fuel injection system.
A good friend of mine had a 74 W200 4x4 Dodge Power Wagon, that's when trucks weren't play toys like today.

You'll find another one out there. I still see some of those generation Chevrolet & GMC fullsize pickups on the roads today, just not as many as I use to back in those days. Those generation Fords on the other hand are super rare nowadays, & the easiest way to find one of them is online.

WOW -- is the fast and slow pitch shifting you hear making it sound "drunk"
FLUTTER -- is the jumpy buffeting you hear where it sounds like a person is speaking underwater.
While these were once problems that needed to be avoided in the recording industry, in the last 25 to 30 years, wow/flutter has increasing been used as a desirable affect in recordings. There are countless tape simulation plug-ins on recording software and effects pedals that incorporate Wow/Flutter.

Ha! right on. My dad had a '74 Chevy half ton. Long and wide, it had a 250 with 3 on the tree. It was a "Custom" and such a plain jane, the local dealership had to call around other dealers to see if anyone had one. 3 days later he found one.
We had that truck for 20 years. I remember many hunting trips in that truck. Never failed us. =)

I just picked up a 70 GMC bare bones with the 250, three on the tree. An old school district truck at a junk yard. This thing is super simple, after sitting for three years with old gas, put in a charged battery, poured a dash of clean fresh gas down the carb, fired right up! Amazing. Try that with any new truck under the same circumstances.
Back in the day when power steering & power brakes were optional. Nowadays everything has them.

It only takes air, fuel and spark to make an engine run. Everything else is bullshit.

I got a 97 Silverado Z71. I don't think that truck can die. I drive the hell out of it. do everything under the sun. still a beast!
I've got a 93 k1500. 375k all original except brakes and battery. Runs and drives like the day I bought it in 1994.
This is when Gm took pride in building the best truck on earth
And they were usually 300 pds lighter after a couple yrs from all the rust eating away the rockers and bed .
My 78 C20 was built like crap. I love it and will never give it up but body fit was garbage and there were 5 different place on it you could see the primer through the paint. it was in excellent condition with 79k on it when i got it, always garaged. the chevy vs ford debate then was ford was way more primitive. if you've ever worked on both ford had stuff in the 70s chevy had in the early 60's. good reliable trucks both but gm was 7 years ahead all the time until the late 80's.
I remember Dad's half a 1975 blazer, I say half because that thing had so much rust the door skins flapped on the highway. The engine was rock solid but the body was worse than swiss cheese. Seems like the 73-76 GM pickups in our area were horribly rusty. Dad's blazer was so gone by 1986 that we pulled the engine and let the rest dissolve on the farm. The truck that offered value was the 72, so glad we kept that one!
No idea where you people that keep claiming this live, but there are 70's models all over the place in the south.

There was a span of a few years in the mid-1970s when Chevy trucks would start rusting the very same year that you bought them, and a few years later, there would be rust everywhere and the lower 1/3 of the doors would be gone. The other brands rusted really badly too in those days, but for that particular span of time, Chevy/GMC was quite a bit worse.

My dad bought a new 74 C10 6 cyl. It had 1 option, an automatic trans. Was a good solid truck.
Since 1974' 80% of Chevy trucks are still on the road.
The other 20% made it home. Lol.

Coming from a ford family, I had to buy a Chevy truck. It is the best (back then and probably even today) for carrying a slide in camper. The deluxe camper pkg, came from the factory with frame mounted tie downs, shocks in the front of the bed, connected to the cab and front stabilizers. Plus the lowest center of gravity, even with 4x4. At 8,400 lbs, it rides almost as smooth as my 91 Lincoln Mark 7.

I had a BEAUTIFUL 1977 Ford F-250 Trailer Special with the 460 V8 with Factory Ice Cold A/C. I use to Trailer my 1970 Ford Galaxie XL 429 N Code Thunder Jet. Lost it in Hurricane Sandy in 2012. I couldn’t sleep for Months after that! 😞

To be fair, it's really hard to screw up quality control of a painted metal dash. It was true then, and now. They are building what the consumer wants..... A new vehicle every 5 years and as many bells and whistles as possible. And no metal dashes

@Hunter is a rat I love the 73-80 square bodies. In the 90’s, my brother restored (2) 1976 Silverado 4x4’s. Both black with red interior, both with 400 sbc. They were restored to pure stock and I drove one of them for several months. Loved that truck.

What's crazy is I still see those old square body Chevys still on the roads while those old Fords are long gone.
The square bodies you see are mostly late 80's. Late 80's Fords are 2 series away from mid 70's. I see plenty of early to mid 70's Fords . Not so much Chevies . Maybe it is what you look for.
dennis langston Doesn't matter the decade I just don't see older Fords compared to older GMs, in fact it's not uncommon to see an old GM scrap truck with a Ford tailgate on it.
Come to the PNW...lots of old 70s fords still running around...70s Chevy/GMC are few and far between.
My daily drive last 3.5 years is my 74 El Camino, old Arizona car. Just love this car, way more than my previous MB-220-CDI. Its .... kind of costly, BTW.
I've owned both brands and loved both for different reasons. Watching this made me think that if GM only knew how bad their trucks would rot away,they wouldn't be tauting about how great the truck is built to prevent rust.
That is an old, old advertising trick. Pick your weakest point and promote it as a strength so potential buyers will just look right past it.

How do they rot? I purchased an 87 GMC Sierra about 8 years ago that had never had any work on it done, and there was no rust on it.
@@datrevmeister first, let me say that I was speaking in general terms. There are always outliers to a circumstance. Secondly, it also depends on where you live and how the vehicle is maintained and whether it stayed outside or was kept and stored indoor. I live in the south eastern part of the country and we have very humid weather and a lot of road salt used in the winter. Chevrolet,especially trucks used for farm work rusts terribly. 70's and 80's Chevrolet trucks rust especially bad. All that said, if you have a good, solid, rust free Chevrolet truck then kudos to you. You have a truck that has been pampered for most of its life. Enjoy your vintage Chevy and be very glad it wasn't used and abused all its life.

The best Chevy/gmc trucks and be everywhere owned was the 2003-2007 2500hd. Mine is 06 Duramax LBZ. This truck is by far better than the new ones. I’ve beat the heck out of it and it runs and runs. Great brakes, ice cold a/c. Tough torsion suspension.
Being someone that owned a half dozen square bodies, starting with a "73....... your special, tough, super duper, triple part fenders, weren't so great..............lol

First thing I thought. They sure are hard to find without rust in the Midwest. Lots of nooks and crannies for moisture to sit and eat away around spotwelds.

Gotta love that funky mid-70's background music on the second part (1976 model year vehicles). I love the fabric pattern on the van seats. Everything today has to be grey or black fabric, pleather, or leather.
ppl who bought the chevy soon learned that the frame would crack around the steering box...and the hood would bend after while cuzz the hinges would get stiff ..and they didnt tell you that ford used alot of galvanized steel where chevy didnt..and anyone who lives in a snow state would soon realize the chevy was a real rot box ,,and the fords rocker panels would last alot longer then the chevy's

I never trust companies that have to explain how good they are.
That's been GM's schtick for decades now. I find it hilarious how they'll dog on Ford for something new and then in model year or two they'll implement the same thing on their own trucks. The most recent example of which was when Ford went to aluminum body panels over steel.

Chevy was just getting back in the truck game after building those lame coil spring trucks, my dad always bought GMC's. I've owned em all, even Dodges, through the years and they all have their downfalls. Bought a new truck last year and after driving them all i got a GMC, I'm happy with it.
You mean the coil springs in the rear? Yeah, that was a bad design. The link arms would wear out and you could stand at the back end and slide the body back and forth over the axle! They had a really "boingy" ride in the back end too!
Well I am a Ford guy and this video shows how you can rig anything to make your product look good. But if I came across a clean C10 I would love to have it.
I just traded my 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander in and in its place purchased a 1999 Chevy suburban with a 350 4 Speed automatic and I’m very happy I’m finally driving a vehicle that I wanted to have looking back I was always looking for a vehicle like the older Chevy trucks and I feel in love with them ever since my dad bought his 1973 Chevy Cheyenne super 10 and it was the first vehicle I would tune up an engine on and years later perform body work on.Chevy Rules the other drools!!!
I'm definitely sold. I'll always pay the extra dollar for a Ford. I don't like spending time in the waiting room at the shop.

They're all good at times, and they all break at times. An earthmoving contractor I know just switched their whole fleet from Ford to Chevy because the Fords were in the shop too much to suit them. But this can go either way, depending on the year, model, specific engines, transmissions, etc. Anyone claiming substantially better or worse quality based strictly on brand is speaking from emotional loyalties alone. On the other hand, certain brand-specific features could be better or worse than average. Ford's twin I-beam suspension was a bad idea from the beginning, with the tires swinging in semi-circles as the suspension moved up and down, leading to lateral movement (scuffing) of the tread and poor tire life. Chevy's independent front suspension in those days allowed a much more efficient compression and rebound (much less tire scuff) and it was remarkably rugged too. But I bet you could find other specific comparisons favoring Ford or other brands. I was always a fan of International, but they had their flaws too (especially rust).
Bought a 75 Silverado in 77. The box was rusted out by 80 and the doors and can corners by 82.loved it so much I bought a 74 GMC Sierra to replace it.lol

Both were very Good Trucks, the 1973-87 Chevy and GMC trucks were prone to rusting out bust if you want to restore them, you can get the parts to do so, Same with the Fords and both makes have a Plethora of Engines to work with. when it comes to the six cylinders I lean towards the Ford 240 and 300 CID and the Chevy 292 and pretty much all 8 cylinder engines are great choices.

The GM had better engines and steering, however it did not measure up to the Ford in terms of ride, suspension travel, body integrity and rust resistance. I think the 70s Fords have an enduring quality, not surprising as they were designed in 1967.

Id have to disagree with the Chevy having the better engines. They had one good sbc v8. The 400 sbc wasn't a good work engine, unless the overheating issues were fixed. The 454 was ok but only option. Ford had over 4 fe big blocks to pick from for the truck.

@@theguy9234 Dad had a 1976 400 4 barrel GMC Van and we never had overheating problems but it came with an over-sized radiator because it had dual AC front and back. Mom had the 1972 Ford 400 2 barrel in her LTD and that was just as reliable. We lived in desert to with 110 temps. That said Dad and I kept up the maintenance most of it done in the driveway.
My first Brand New vehicle I bought was a 1981 GMC High Sierra 1/2 ton fleetside short bed two tone paint Metallic Root Beer Brown & Artic White Quarter Panels & Cab
After the rest of that Chevrolet rusted away the tailpipe was still laying there...

I've had both at different times. Still have the K5 although it needs a bit of work. A barn resident for a long time.
I have a -79 Blazer, owned it for 35 years now. And, it has an Optima battery that is now about 30 years old. They do not make trucks and batteries like that any more. If Chevy started to make the K-5 Blazer again, I think I am not the only one to buy it. Just add a modern V 8 and not much more is needed. I also have a Hummer H3, and the feeling I have when driving it is that it may break at any moment; everything is too electronic and fancy...

My family owned both when they came out. My father had a ‘77 F250 4x4 crewcab Custom with a 351W 4 speed in it, and my older brother had a ‘77 GMC Sierra 3/4 ton 2wd with a 454 and four speed in it. They were both good trucks but I remember my father calling that 351W a gutless wonder, it had little power and sometimes pulling steep hills he’d have to drop it right down into 2nd gear.
3+5+1 = 9. 999 - 666! Chevrolet 350. 3+5+0 = 8. 454 = 4+5+4 = 13, Friday the 13th. They are occult.

I think the Fords did have at least some galvanized sheet metal and didn't rust as bad, but I do remember Ford cab mounts rotting away - but it took many years. One story I have - going down an interstate highway in a '74 Chevy pick-up, and a big flashlight that was laying on the cab floor - the kind that held 3 or 4 "D" cell batteries - fell out a hole in the floor of the truck onto the road. It ran good, though.
Use those Chevy trucks for working and driving down lots of bumpy roads I bet eventually after so much ware and tare you will see ping pong balls starting to bounce.
Ford had rust issues to in those years. As to where the outer body rusted on the chevy stuff the cab supports and floor pans rusted out of the ford.
i own a 74 C-10 Cheyenne Super its the pale blue (like hawiaan blue) and white color combo. factory 454, A/C dual tanks PS PB black interior and get this, a wood bed floor. i bought it for myself as mt 18th birthday present many a year ago and really loved driving it. it has the typical issues such as the famous body rot and the bed floor is getting really weak looking. and the old BBC...well lets say when it starts knocking LOUDER than normal (been that way for decades) you have to stop and add oil and whilst stopped check the fuel level LOL!!!

To be fair , for years if you combine the Chevy AND GMC sales , it's about the same as Ford. The actual difference is less than we are led to believe.
I had a 74' Ford E-100 Econoline van. I was a great van. Had it with over 200K miles and bought a 97 Econoline. Put 200K on that then in 2017 was going to buy the Trasit but got a Mercedes Sprinter for $3K less than Ford wanted. Didn't want to jump ship but did.

Ford Trucks do have better Frames... My k10 Chevy is notorious for Cracks in the frame in many areas " watch Stacey Davids stunt Double " on youtube. Also the 9 inch rear Axle is also much stronger on the Fords . Fords were Tougher trucks but if you take care of any truck it should stick around awhile.
My K10 had cracks at both rear shock mounts.

Um, no. Both were half-ton trucks, no question about it. I was around in those days and can spot the difference between 1/2-ton and 3/4-ton trucks of any brand from those days in an instant.
I miss my 1976 Chevy C-10 Custom Deluxe truck. It was a short bed with a 350 V8. I paid $1,900 for it in 1983. It had no rust and it was a California truck.
Now just think today that truck is worth more than $ 19,000.
Had an 84 Silverado 4x4 when I lived in NC. Beautiful truck. But the worst I ever owned..always failing me. I traded it for a 74 C-10 Custom Deluxe. Same as yours being a short bed and 350 V8. It was 3 shades of black and rusted through. It never let me down. I was hoping to make it a tribute truck of the one in "The Driver" . Sold it for $1,200 4 years ago. Almost overnight these trucks became the next big thing and still are.

Not only that, but the paint on the '74 Chevy truck my brother had went bad in 20 years; and that was in the mild California climate. The roof of the cab turned to rust.
I had a 77 4wheel drive 3/4 Ton 350 c.i. with a plow...best truck I ever owned made it to 330k b4 it was Stolen !!! In 2004
My dad loved his 1970’s Ranger trucks, but I chose Chevy and GMC as my preferred truck brands, instead. 😆

Vehicles had classic designs back then. Like a Stratocaster, they couldn't be improved. Most of today's vehicles -- if you can even tell them apart -- look like crap.
If I post three pics of a 1930 Ford, Chevy, or Dodge my guess is you would label them wrong All cars look the same by decade for the most part. Now the part of that that one could argue is well over time more models were being made rather than one main car with different trim levels.

1973 was the first year for both those third generation Chevy C/K series & sixth generation Ford F-series pickups. 1979 was the last year for the Fords & 1991 for the Chevys. The Chevy half ton & three quarter ton regular cabs stopped being produced in 1987 & same with the one ton regular cabs in 1989 which only left the crew cabs, the seventh generation Suburbans, & second generation K5 Blazers left in production up through 1991.

I've got a 1978 Chevy pickup fleet side with a 350 and a 4 barrel carb. not a lot of power and its got a hole in the floor. but it runs soo nice and is cool. its got an econo-gate on it
