    Thank you so much for this detailed information right in the middle of the theatre. Here in Germany we had a very special mishap three weeks ago. In the Rhine valley they are building a new double tracked railway line to supplement the existing one. Under the town of Rastatt they bore two tunnel tubes. In the final part after 4.200 m of completed new tunnel the tunnel boring machine cross under the existing railway line in a very acute angle. Between the railway and the tunnel tube there are just 5 m of ground left. This ground was frozen down to -37° C (-34.6° F) to make it drillable. The 160 m long tunnel boring machine passed under railway line for 80 m, the mishap has happened. The railway together with the road bed moved down about 50 cm on a lenght of appr. 15 m. Some tunnel segments has moved and water came into the tunnel. They had to fill up the new tunnel with concrete - together with the 18 Million Euro Machine - to provide further slides. And the realy big problem is the closed railway line. It is one of the most frequented here in germany with 200 freight trains and 160 passenger trains per day. And they assume to re-open the railway line at the 7th of october. And ... this is the realy sad thing ... we have no Juan Brown reporting from the site. So all the people interested in the oroville dam thing can be very happy to have you reporting with a very, very goog analytic expertise and also taking wunderful aerial images and videos of the site. Thank you ... keep on ... we stay tuned ;-)

      Thank you for this well investigated and compact article. Since the 12th of august i was following all article in germany and swizerland concerning this mishap. The main statements are: "This indicates a failure of the freezing regime and possible over-excavation of material as the TBM passed through the zone." and "Reports in the local German media suspect that the integrity of the ground freezing operation was undermined by a recent period of high summer temperatures combined with periods of heavy rainfall." Something went wrong and they had no "Plan B". It is very expensive to tug the freight trains together with their electric locomotives over not electrified alternative lines. Passengers have to change to buses.

    • @joshua43214
      @joshua43214 6 років тому +2

      wow! What a mess. My BS meter was climbing as I read the article. Blame it on the weather?!? We lost a TBM here in my town when it crossed over an area of soft material and sank into the netherworld. Luckily it did cause any damage to anything else, so the causes were easy to find (the survey was at fault).
      You don't have to be an engineer to see that they where cutting things too close to the limit. clearly if segments sink, they are not being supported underneath - you can't blame that on a failure of the freezing.

      It appears that there are engineering problems and miscalculations in Germany as well as the USA. Thanks for that report, Sir. Yes, we are very lucky to have Juan keeping his faithful followers up-to-date. I do not see any Oroville stories in the MSM anymore. It is simply "out of sight, out of mind", as far as the news goes. (Or maybe it is "out of interest, out of the news"...) Most people have the interest longevity of a nat. When the sensation is gone, they go to the next sensational story. That's why the MSM never does any follow-up. Who cares?, they correctly reason. Maybe it is the same in GERMANY? That's why Juan is a god-send on Oroville.

    • @cember01
      @cember01 6 років тому +1

      It's not unusual to purposely abandon a TBM machine in the ground after a project. (with the understanding that' not the reason in pitatube's story above). Apparently it's sometimes cheaper to run them off to the side and leave them there than to disassemble and remove them.

    As I read through all the comments and praise, it's hard to find room to say something different that hasn't already been said. I really do believe this is award winning content you've developed on this story and not the local award you mentioned in a previous updates, but at the national level. Maybe someone closer to the journalism industry can offer this storyline up for review to the right governing body. The channel grows stronger everyday with additional lines on the Butte County fires, Cycling tours of Northern California, Oregon and Washington, etc. the list goes on. I guess the only words I can find are a simple "Thank you" and "Outstanding meaningful content that enriches our collective knowledge of the world". Well done.

      This comes from mutual respect. Which is why the traditional reporters, who had actual knowledge of what they were reporting, would do such good interviews.
      Juan has structural knowledge and has shown he is keen to learn more, plus only reports in a factual manner. This puts the people being interviewed at ease, as they know their words won't be misconstrued or deliberately misquoted to create a lie.

    As explained by DWR supervisor Tom Cobarrubia; the drainage pipes are mainly there for subterranean sources of water and NOT the incidental leakage in the expansion joints (starting at 1:42) but then in his example of witnessing excess drain water he mentions the construction joints that the pipes call home, as needing further inspection (at 2:20) to determine where the water is coming from and damage assessment.
    Now, it makes sense to me as to why the spillway would need drainage (next season's construction) through the section of RCC that clearly, could not have a subterranean source. It would tell the inspectors that the grout seal and rubber seal BETWEEN slabs has been compromised and is in need of repair or maintenance. A way to stay on top of any water related future erosion!
    Thanks again Juan Browne, for your timely updates and thorough questions about construction.

      Yes, this is the type of journalism that should win awards. I've been following Juan's coverage since the beginning and it's been outstanding throughout. He's articulate, has studied his subject intensely and never asks a stupid question. I admit, at the beginning, I was skeptical that Juan would get permission to do the in depth investigation and reporting that he wanted to do. Now, I have no doubt concerning the transparency of those who control the Oroville rebuilding effort. The geology of the site, scope and quality of operations, planning, financials and the identity of those who are responsible for its outcome have all been covered by Juan. Well done, Juan! As a big fan of "low and slow" and STOL, I enjoy your videos featuring the mighty Luscombe as well - thanks!

      There's a reason for the doom and gloom. People are so used to government and corporations operating opaquely. It's been their modus operandi for as long as I can remember. From the void of true information, people naturally discuss what is being covered up. In such an instance, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume there's a cover-up - otherwise, they'd just tell us what's going on, right? Well, that resulted in most people assuming the government was not doing what it should be doing. I don't think that's a bad assumption - even if wrong. It's what opaque actors deserve for their disrespect to those of us affected by their actions, or lack thereof. By contrast, allowing someone like Juan to delve into the details on what could be the biggest feat of engineering and construction in US history fills the vacuum of information that would normally be filled with theories that assume the worst. It looks like those responsible for mitigating the initial disaster and actually fixing this situation in such a tight time frame are going to come out smelling like roses when this is completed. They will be richly rewarded - and they should be. Not only for pulling off such a magnificent feat - but also for doing it in such a transparent manner.

    Wow! That is a wall. Makes it look big next to my little retaining wall I build around the house. It was a full 2' tall and 6" wide but I did it all by hand with a mixer and a few hundred bags of concrete. Doing the rebar like they have is amazing. Guess they had cranes lift those heavy pieces. Amazing work and speed. They are building walls 5 times faster than on I35 here in Texas. Just amazed at how much of a mass that spillway is. The flow rates out of Houstons dams releasing water is flooding out a whole area downstream at 16000cfs. 160000 cfs is hard to comprehend. They slowed to 8000cfs to keep the damage downstream to a minimum. That is alot of water. Your videos are extremely informative. Thanks

      They don't need the spillway to flow a lot of water, because they have the HPP and RVOS. They need to keep the levels lower than normal, so whatever comes in will likely be pumped out by the HPP. What you will not have is a lot of excess water next summer.

Aside from the great information - clearly and concisely delivered - I think you should be recognized for how much your reporting has contributed to the high level of dialogue and conversation in the growing "Oroville dam community". There are SO many people watching and learning as this project proceeds and I notice that virtually all of the dozens of comments here are intelligent and thoughtful.
    There will always be folks who just want to snipe at the process but I believe that your true value has been bringing the level of discourse up for everyone who truly wants the facts and to be informed. Thank you for continuing to bring questions from the "watchers" to the people who can answer! I have seen numerous examples where those watching have voiced legitimate concerns and questions that you have raised in your reporting and have gotten answers directly from the technical experts. That in itself is a tremendous service to the residents of Butte County and the surrounding area along with all the rest of us who are watching around the world.
    Keep up the good work!

    Well done again Juan, another factual and responsible report. I have to say well done to those on the ground who have worked bloody hard in hot trying conditions to advance this project to the stage it's got to now. I didn't consider them a chance to complete this by November 1, but right now they're giving it a shake. Whether they make Nov 1 or not all the workers deserve a big thanks for doing their best.

    juan is a man made back in the day when men knew how to rise to any challenge so you youngin can learn a lot from this type of man the sky is the limit reach for your goals and never set them too low. I find in today's society the young men today only reach to height of there knowledge when they should expand their knowledge to reach any goals.

    More great details Juan - thank you. The DWR rep made it sound as though the additional 270' section of upper SW where the "unauthorized blasting" was done was in fact planned to be done this year - which I don't believe is what we assumed and/or were told earlier. Rumors rumors rumors.... anyway, the work looks top notch.

    Beyond excellent! Of course you have laid the essential groundwork. While the so called professional journalists have asked about the green spot and security considerations that are classified, you have asked mostly engineering questions that move the narrative along. The phone in conferences have been enlightening. DWR knows you are the only channel that will get their story out. Hence, they are giving you the graduate level tour with the real bosses and not the dumbed down, lawyer approved, spokesperson delivered version for the unenlightened. The other reporters present seem to be content on letting you ask the questions and just taking notes so they can get a few quotes. That is a good strategy when they are in over their head. They are not stupid, just ignorant.

    A great photo - op during this project will be when the new lower chute concrete comes in contact with the new upper concrete chute. It could be portrayed just as was the golden spike ceremony at Promontory Point Utah when the trans-continental railroad was joined.

    Juan,
    I would appreciate a cross section showing the typical placement of dental concrete (grout slurry), leveling concrete, roller compacted concrete and structural concrete. Even a crude, back of the envelope drawing would be helpful. Over the episodes I have become confused as to the layering.
    Another "cartoon" drawing that would be helpful would be showing what will be removed and replaced in the lower spillway after this season has ended. The need to cut in the drainage system is confusing me as to the depth of what concrete placed this year will need to be removed, and how far the cuts will have to go for the drainage.
    Thanks. Excellent reporting.

    Juan, thank you so much for these fantastic videos. You're doing a great job of asking intelligent questions to the DWR that help to clarify what they are doing. Very interesting to hear that they will remove the RCC training walls next year. Also good to hear an explanation of the different types of concrete and how they are used.

      I find it interesting that so much of the spillway is temporary and will be replace next year because it may be needed this year. As I understand it in 50 years this is the first time the spillway was needed and if you have normal precipitation this Winter they can work all winter and Finnish next fall. My point is if somebody knew the feature they could make some real money in Vegas

    Thank you Juan comprehensive reporting. Not a problem at the moment because the weather looks so good, but if there is any frost it can destroy concrete like a hot knife going through butter. Cheers.

    • @TyphoonVstrom
      @TyphoonVstrom 6 років тому +2

      That concrete has so much mass, it would easily survive a sudden frost event. It's not a 4" driveway......

    • @colinburnside8725
      @colinburnside8725 6 років тому +1

      Yes i agree but the top 1 inch can crumble over night it there is a heavy frost. Which can leave the concrete vunerable and in a more exposed state. It takes 25 years for concrete to fully harden and another 25 years to loose most of it,s strength . Thank you for your comment.
