What is a biopsy?
A biopsy is a medical procedure in which a sample of tissue or cells is taken from a suspicious area in the breast to be examined under a microscope. It is the only definitive way to determine if a lump or abnormality in the breast is cancerous.
Types of biopsies:
There are several types of biopsies that can be performed, depending on the size, location, and characteristics of the breast lump. The most common ones include:
1. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy: This is a minimally invasive procedure where a thin needle is inserted into the lump to withdraw cells for examination. It is commonly used for lumps that can be felt and are close to the skin's surface.
2. Core needle biopsy: In this method, a slightly larger needle is used to extract a small cylinder of tissue from the breast lump. This allows for more accurate diagnosis and can be performed on both palpable and non-palpable lumps.
3. Surgical biopsy: This is the most invasive type of biopsy and involves removing all or part of the lump through a small surgical procedure. It is typically recommended when the lump cannot be easily accessed or when further testing is needed for a definitive diagnosis.
How is it performed?
Most biopsies are performed using local anesthesia, which numbs the breast area, making the procedure relatively painless. The type of biopsy chosen will depend on several factors, including the location and size of the abnormality, as well as personal preference. The procedure usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes.
