Sweet! This is exacltly what I needed. Set up my first tank yesterday and water flow was too strong for my betta. I googled and yours was the first thing I clicked on. Easy, cheap and doesn't look trashy. Thank you. BTW Patriot is hilarious.
Just want to thank you for taking the time to do this video! I was having that problem with my fish and as soon as I did the trick my fish started swimming all over the tank! Thank you thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing! We moved our betta from a 3.5 gal tank to a new 10 gallon. He was not enjoying the whole tank because of the flow. Slapped this on and he is now enjoying the whole tank!!!
Yay! Thank you, an extremely simple solution to something I've been over engineering... lol The betta I have currently has been a rescue, with barely any fins when I first took over. He's made leaps and bounds so far, the water surface breakage is still stressful for the little dude. So hopefully this simple fix can help both of us.
This video is fantastic! I bought a aquarclear 70 for our 40 gallon and current on lowest setting was very difficult for my fish to swim through! Luckily, I was able to do what you said to in this video and now my babies are swimming very happily while having good filtration! Great job 👏
This is probably one of the best tips I've seen for reducing flow from an Aquaclear, very easy to implement. Oh, and the betta is gorgeous, but don't tell him I said that. He's going to start charging for autographs...
This is the greatest tip for the aqua clear my god this has significantly helped my tank since flow is so important in a saltwater tank. Thanks this has to be seenmore
Stanley - so glad it was helpful! Helped mine quite a bit, too. Kudos to my local fish store for the idea. As long as this video helps a few people, it did its job! Thanks for checking out the video!
LOL ! Patriot, great name -" actor betta model" haha he is stunning! These videos always make me laugh definitely the best on UA-cam! Sorry about your red betta they get into everything but it is still sad. Aquaclear, my favorite filter also but I had a hard time with the plastic bottle baffle on some different filter models so I shoved a small sponge filter in the outflow. Thanks for the video!
Thanks, Coralocean! Glad you enjoyed it. I had to have him and my LFS held him for 2 weeks until I could get there. Guess I'll have to find him an agent to get him trained ☺️Yeah, no idea with that red betta...they do get into everything and he certainly ate something that was bad. I've cleared the tank of anything, so hopefully that doesn't happen to Patriot...and shoving a sponge filter in works too! I love most HOB's, but I think a lot of their flow is a bit strong. Thank you for the continued support and for checking out the video! (Patriot told me to tell you he is really good looking 🙄)
Brilliant, and adorable. Now to find out how to DIY a spill extender, to have the spill go further out instead of straight down. To move the spill water away from the intake so it's not just moving the same water through the filter.
R Ross - thanks for the kind words! Another idea/suggestion - how deep is your tank? You could try putting an extender on the intake so it reaches further down - as long as the intake is a 1/2 or so above the substrate that should work fine. I'm not sure what type of hang on back you have, but the Aquaclear (now owned by Fluval) filters generally extend far enough down - some other brands definitely have their intakes too high, in my opinion...
Great tip, exactly what I was looking for. So many other tips suggest things like restricting the pump intake using pantyhose or sponges, which reduces the overall flow (and therefore filtration), not to mention stressing the pump motor. I was definitely overthinking things when it was coming to baffle designs, though. This is great! Hopefully with this minor change I'll see my Betta being a lot more active.
Just seeing this 4 yrs later! Lol. Any new flow tricks you’ve discovered over the years? I currently have an internal filter, and purchased a tiny HOB that fits in your hand for bettas nano tank. The current was too strong even in the lowest flow setting, so I went back to the internal filter. Going to try this trick tomorrow with the HOB. I really want to use the HOB as it’ll give him more room in the tank and also probably provides better filtration than the internal filter.
Got a Betta and never considered the idea that the filter they sold me alongside him would be the reason he struggled. The moment I made this change I noticed a change in attitude. The strong current was harmful to his fins and I'm seeing regrowth. Thanks for the video!
Just installed on one outlet of my Marineland HOB. It is not visible in the water. Looked at different YT videos and this one seemed the best option. Thank you for sharing.
@@dmichaelsfishden One mod I made and this applies only to HOB's with flat covers like the Aquaclear. It was getting cumbersome when I needed to clean the baffle due to crud buildup so I use pins to attach it to the cover. I cut about a 1" x 1/2" rectangular notch on the side of the plastic where it attaches to the lid. I lay the plastic flat on the lid instead of having that cylindrical shape and use a clothes pin in the notch to essentially clamp down the plastic to the lid. You can cut away some of the baffle if it curls under too much. Just thought about putting some holes in the front part of the baffle so water can flow left, right and straight ahead. Again thanks for the idea.
Rod - this is brilliant! So much better than my "duck tape." Really appreciate you sharing this - I'll have to rig up the same! If you don't mind, I am going to highlight your idea in the video description
@@whateverwhenever_9987 Sorry I replaced the marineland with an aquaclear. Instead of tape you could try attaching a couple of double sided adhesive strips to the cover of the filter and stick plastic clothes pins to the strip with the mouth facing towards the front. Then you can clamp the baffle with the pins instead of using tape. This allows you to easily remove the baffle for cleaning. For the adhesive strips look up Command Water Resistant Refill Strips. If your marineland has the 2 separate covers then you could probably not use the front shield.
You're right, you're absolutely stunning! I know you'll get great care with your new owner & you'll just love your new home! Welcome Patriot to your new home!
"Wanda - Yes I am stunning. My new owner is corny and clumsy, but I guess he'll do. Do you know any good agents? I'm a born actor and Betta model. I do love my new home, just....if I had a less corny owner it would be perfect. Thank you for recognizing how good looking I am." --Patriot
So I don't fill my tank all the way up,I have a marine Land spinning filter and I tell you it's strong and keeps my fish on the other side! Or gets swept away by the current..this is awesome! I really appreciate it! I didn't want to take this back!
I got a 36 gal with a aqueon quiet 50 for 50 bucks, but man it was blowing fish, plants and my substrate everywhere. This totally fixed it now all the fish are chilling and hanging out where we can see them!!
Lol - thanks for the kind words, Melissa! So glad it was helpful and that you enjoyed my little sidekick 😉 He keeps me on my toes. Definitely give the baffle a try - super cheap and works great! Thanks for watching!
@@dmichaelsfishden I put your baffle in one of my betta tanks, works like a DREAM! going to go buy another bottle of water today for my other betta tank. I have amazingly yummy well water and don't have bottled water at home at all lol!
Melissa - so great to hear!! It's worked well for me and the plastic usually seems to last 2-3 months so you'll get a lot of mileage out of them. I wish I had some good tasting well water at home! ☺️
That was absolutely hysterical! I’ve had 2 Aquaclear filters - the first one died after 2 months, I stupidly replaced it with the exact same filter but have been unhappy with the water clarity in my 20g guppy tank. It’s not overstocked - there’s 12 guppies, 3 Otos and 3 Cory cats. Not big fish! I do WC every 5 days. The junk coming up in the vacuum was driving me crazy. I have a tidal 35 in my 15g betta tank, with a nob that controls the flow, and that tank is crystal clear, so I replaced the Aquaclear with a Tidal 55 - my 20g is tall and the Tidal 35 doesn’t have a long intake tube, but the Tidal 55 does, so I went with the bigger filter. Now the water in my guppy tank is as pristine as the water in my betta tank. The flow in my betta tank does not disturb my bettas. The one on the filter side actually hangs out under the filter and the water is relatively still. Having said that, the tidal 55 has a stronger flow and my guppy fry get knocked all over th e place if they get too close to the filter, so I’m going to use your water bottle idea for the guppy tank. I’m about to set up a 55G, I bought a tidal 70 for that tank. I plan on splitting up the guppies- males in the 55g, because fry are dropping like snowflakes. I’m also going to have a betta sorority in that tank - my LFS keeps his female bettas in the same tank, so the hard part for me is already done. I’m sure I’ll use the bottle idea on the Tidal 70 to keep the girls happy. Another great tip from you. Thank you!
I hear the Tidals are great filters! Don't have any experience personally with them, but I've heard good things. Glad you enjoyed the video! :) The little water bottle technique is the best and cheapest way I know to baffle the water well. Should really help the fry as well!
The only thing is that you gotta take it off and put it back on every time you clean the filter, which seems troublesome. Also, it’s not aesthetically pleasing.
Thank you! My filter made a strong current that kept pushing my betta down, but I tried the water bottle trick and it works pretty good. I'm slightly worried if the plastic is safe though, could it be toxic in some way?
Britney - glad the video was helpful! I have some of the same concerns about the plastic. I don't think it is toxic as long as it is fairly new - I replace my baffle with a piece of a newer water bottle, just in case. So far, no adverse reactions and I've been doing this over 2 years 😀
Amazing idea thank you so much. I just bought a new filter for my beta tank and it’s blowing EVERYONE around. My beta lost 80% of his fins. Im hoping it’s just because the filter stress. Hoping this works. I added stress coat as well. Pray for my old man. He’s 5yrs old.
Thank you for this. Built a planted 10 gallon for my betta and he’s been eating in the mid section of the tank because the flow above is too strong. My hang on back filter came from an aqueon kit. I plan on adding celestial pearl danios (upgrading to a 20gallon) when my plants get bigger so I don’t want my beta to have to compete for food.
Thank you! when I got my betta in the tank she's looks like a first time swimmer(like some wind is pulling her in other direction) XD now she can swim normally.
Did this for my turtle tank as I'm getting a hatchling musk turtle so I didn't want such a strong flow. Plus my water is only about 3/4 so it also reduces the noise of the waterfall.
Duuude i have a fluval edge with 12 tetra and those never swimmed around the top and middle. Soon as i did this trick they swimming everywhere even with the filter at max flow
Lol...he did the best he could....I think he needs a new agent. thanks for checking out the video, Debbie. Really appreciate it. I hope Patriot behaves better than the other Betta I had in this tank...(I know the odds are slim...☺️)
Great video! Just lost my Betta Simon about 10 days ago, started to get another but switched it up, Guppy style! Patriot is far better at modeling than acting, very very handsome fellow!
Thanks for the kind words and continued support, Melissa! I'm sorry to hear about Simon. But...switching it up guppy style is fantastic! I've actually never owned guppies, but even I'm thinking of changing that up too :) Also - Patriot told me to tell you that you are right...he IS a very very handsome fellow. And I agree...he's won't be a very good actor if he can't ever remember a line.... ;)
Thanks for the kind words Julie! Patriot is a handful but he is rehearsing hard every day to keep his lines in check...and apparently...."smoothing out his aura and swagger" whatever that means 🙄😉 Thanks for checking out the video! Hope it was helpful!
Hi Lynne - I do have an older video on how to clean a tank - I used vinegar and some hydrogen peroxide -ua-cam.com/video/GYgPUEE0aTg/v-deo.html it's an older video, but still relevant!
What is your recommended substrate for a planted tank? Another aquarium keeper youtuber said that for plants, you can use (strictly organic) planting soil under a layer of sand, but I'm not sure that's a great idea....but I need something as inexpensive as possible, and it seems like the substrates specifically meant for planted tanks tend to be crazy expensive, especially for larger tanks. I have a tall 20gallon.
Did you add a sponge on the extension tube? Just got this filter and the first 20min I had it on, it sucked 2 baby fish in ☹ I put a net over it for now but is there a different tube add on for this possibly? I need a better solution! D:
Hi Lizzy - Yes. I always use what we call a pre-filter sponge. I lost a lot of babies in filters years ago, so now, I always use a pre-filter sponge - they are super cheap, last quite a while, and it has the added benefit of giving good bacteria another place to grow on. Here is a link from Aquarium Co-Op where you can buy them:www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/sponge-filters Any local fish store should have them as well. I like the sponges because they do wear out over time, and they are really cheap to replace 👍 Hope that helps!
Thank you for this great tip! Will there be enough oxygen for other inhabitants of my aquarium though? I got ancistrus, cory catfish and dwarf shrimp and naturally want them to be well and happy too.
Yep! This still creates a lot of water movement/disturbance on the surface for oxygenation. If you feel you need a little more surface agitation to create oxygen, you could always add an airstone in the tank 😀 You can put the air pump and airstone on a timer so it runs at night. Hope that helps!
Thanks, Aquarius! I had to have him - never seen colors like that before in a Koi betta....and he knows he's good looking - I hear about it all the time ;)
Thanks, Deb! Trying to catch up with your many new videos! You have THE BEST thumbnails. Thank you for the kind words, and have a wonderful weekend! (Patriot told me to tell you he is really good looking.....🙄)
Jossua - Mine have a small volume adjustment as well - I keep it on when adjusting the flow to see how much flow I am getting and so I know I get exactly the flow I want. You are ok keeping it on - hope that helped and answered the question ok?
Thanks, Sheree! I never thought of rubber waffle drawer liner! That would work amazing. I'll have to look into that. Definitely wanted to baffle this....for $30, I don't want to lose Patriot due to filter flow stress (kinda sounds like some kind of anxiety disorder, doesn't it? ☺️)
dmichaels fish den yes!! It can be very stressful for them. On the drawer liner .. cut it the size of the over flow and long enough to go inside the filter a little, hang over the front, and go into the water about a half inch :) I am also very sorry about your red guy :'(
So much appreciate the advice, Sheree! Thank you. And thanks on the red guy - it literally was a 15 hour death....he must have eaten something that punctured an organ or something....he wasn't bloated before that...very different than constipation. But...Bettas do that sometimes...🙄 Little devils 😈
They have different personalities. Some bettas work with others some don’t. It was a little trial and error. Fortunately, Patriot is a very kind Betta.
Im using the waterfall to produce oxygen. Will this reduce oxygen on my aquarium? I have small 3 gallon community of guppy and molly without airpump. Is this hack ok?
I have an axoltl and i reduced the flow using the bottle method but i still feel the current is too strong for him, is there a way to improve this even moreso? Do i need to somehow tape the bottom half of the bottle down too or just the top part?
Hi Kelsie - My pleasure. Yep, Patriot is still alive and kicking, though we've been battling a little fin rot issue (he thinks it's Coronavirus) since November. He's an older betta now, in his "golden years" so the fin rot fight is a little tougher. I have some videos coming out soon sharing the whole process :)
@@kelsiewest9694 yeah, it is tough sometimes. In the wild, Bettas will live 4 - 5 years. But I really think in the aquarium, 3 to a max of 4 years is more reasonable. But don't feel bad - they take a little practice. My first Betta lasted about 6 months...the next one a year and a half....We get much better with their care the more practice we get. Patriot is the longest lived Betta I've had....he was probably already 1 or 1 1/2 when I got him, so he is probably 3 1/2 to pushing 4 years old now....an he does look like a senior citizen now. lol. Not in a bad way - just looks like he's been around awhile :)
Great question Rebel. It’s never hurt mine as bettas usually don’t like going up to the higher flow areas. I’ve been using this same method for years and haven’t had a betta get injured. That being said, it could be possible. You could use different water bottles that have more rounded edges or try to smooth down the sides of the plastic. I wish I had the means to create an actual plastic baffle...I’d certainly round of the edges. But again at least in my experience, I’ve never had a betta get injured and few that even get too close to the plastic because they don’t like to be right next to the flow. Hope that helps!
Worked perfect. And my boy immediately swam back to the side of the tank where the filter was! So much happier now.
Very glad he did! And glad the video was helpful! Yes, some fish don't like a lot of flow...
This was such a life saver. The Admiral went from hiding in the corner of his tank to swimming around up top immediately!

Great video and tip! Worked great for my axolotl 😊
Great tip. Greater looking Betta.
Steve Finestone thank you! Thank you for watching the video.
Thanks for this video! I have a Top Fin filter, and this amazing, didn't even need tape❤
Bahahahahaha Ha! This fish talk made me roll laughing!!!! Good info too!
Omg thank you!! I spent like $20 on a filter or something for my betta tank and he swam through it once and got slammed down
What are the bettas fish tank mates? This method worked for me!
aww he so cute NAILED IT
Lol...he did the best he could....I think he needs a new agent. thanks for checking out the video, Debbie. Really appreciate it. I hope Patriot behaves better than the other Betta I had in this tank...(I know the odds are slim...☺️)
I have the ac110 and I will try this modify method because it has a lot of waterfall flow
And I agree...he's won't be a very good actor if he can't ever remember a line.... ;)
This worked so well. Thank you.
Wow thank you ! Beautiful fish !!!
I love patriot and your voice overs. So cute.
Thanks for the kind words Julie! Patriot is a handful but he is rehearsing hard every day to keep his lines in check...and apparently...."smoothing out his aura and swagger" whatever that means 🙄😉 Thanks for checking out the video! Hope it was helpful!
works great! i didnt even need tape to put this on my tetra whisper, Thanks!
Glad the video was helpful! Looks like you got a perfect fit on the whisper!
Hello, do you have any videos on how to clean a betta tank?
Hi Lynne - I do have an older video on how to clean a tank - I used vinegar and some hydrogen peroxide -ua-cam.com/video/GYgPUEE0aTg/v-deo.html
it's an older video, but still relevant!
@@dmichaelsfishden exactly what I've been looking for thank you so much!
Great DIY tip. I think it should work with my hob filters which are a different brand. 👍
@@dmichaelsfishden Thanks a lot
Works great! Thank you
Very good video !😀👍
Thanks, Protim! Thank you for checking out the video!
BEAUTIFUL Betta!!!!
Thanks, Aquarius! I had to have him - never seen colors like that before in a Koi betta....and he knows he's good looking - I hear about it all the time ;)
Will be buying some duct tape to make this modification tomorrow. Can you share where/a link for your gorgeous new Betta?! 😍
Lol, just saw this wasn't a new video. 🤣 Still, recommendations for finding a Betta like this?
Hi D... Now that is one stunning Betta. Well named too!! Excellent innovation my friend. So nice to see you!! Have a great weekend!💦💙🌎🐟💦
Thanks, Deb! Trying to catch up with your many new videos! You have THE BEST thumbnails. Thank you for the kind words, and have a wonderful weekend! (Patriot told me to tell you he is really good looking.....🙄)
I’m gonna use this for my sunset thicklipped gourami
Should I turn off hob filter when adjusting flow? It has a speed knob
Jossua - Mine have a small volume adjustment as well - I keep it on when adjusting the flow to see how much flow I am getting and so I know I get exactly the flow I want. You are ok keeping it on - hope that helped and answered the question ok?
@@dmichaelsfishden yes thanks! I'm new to the hobby and didn't wanna mess anything up
My pleasure! We all make mistakes once in awhile - you never mess anything up - you just learn :)
😂 too too funny!! Great tip! I always use rubber waffle drawer liner :)
On the drawer liner .. cut it the size of the over flow and long enough to go inside the filter a little, hang over the front, and go into the water about a half inch :)
I am also very sorry about your red guy :'(
So much appreciate the advice, Sheree! Thank you. And thanks on the red guy - it literally was a 15 hour death....he must have eaten something that punctured an organ or something....he wasn't bloated before that...very different than constipation. But...Bettas do that sometimes...🙄 Little devils 😈
I love koi bettas. I have mine in my 10 gallon and he is full of personality.
They definitely do!
dmichaels fish den thanks for that tip in the video. It definitely has helped with pushing my guy around.
BobbyP glad to hear! Let me know if I can be of any further help.
Omg tysm this helped me a a lot!!
Cute n crazy i love this video
Perfect idea
Thanks so much
My filters have bio wheels and the water bottle can’t fit. What else could I do? I have an axolotl. Thank you
Excellent, I will try that!
How did you get your betta fish so comfortable with other fish?
They have different personalities. Some bettas work with others some don’t. It was a little trial and error. Fortunately, Patriot is a very kind Betta.
Worked perfect!
"NAILED IT!"
This reduces agitation by redirecting the flow and does not reduce the flow itself, so it didn't really help me, however it's an excellent idea
Any issues with water consistently hitting plastic? Will is rub plastic particles off into the tank over time?
Im using the waterfall to produce oxygen. Will this reduce oxygen on my aquarium? I have small 3 gallon community of guppy and molly without airpump. Is this hack ok?
Thank you for this!!!!
I have an axoltl and i reduced the flow using the bottle method but i still feel the current is too strong for him, is there a way to improve this even moreso? Do i need to somehow tape the bottom half of the bottle down too or just the top part?
Thanks! This worked great
So glad it did!
LOL " Food Man" hahaha
;) That's me - All I'm good for to them is food....
Thanks for the instructions. Is patriot still alive? Just curious lol
@@dmichaelsfishden nice! I only ask because I've never had luck with bettas. The longest I've had one was about a year before he died.
Would this also help to stop the splashing noise?
I was using a sponge but im gonna try this instead!
Hope it works well and is as helpful to you as it was for me! 😀
@@dmichaelsfishden it did! Thank you for sharing :)
Will the sharp plastic hurt my betta? She is an older girl
Oh my gosh! Patriot is beautiful!
Won’t the water bottle melt if tank is 80 degrees
Thanks for this video
My pleasure!
would I be able to do the same thing on a smaller filter?
Sure, absolutely. You would just have to cut a smaller piece of a water bottle, but you absolutely could!
dmichaels fish den okay thank you!!
