One thing many beginners don't realize with their first betta fish is how much flow they can handle. When the filter whips them around the tank and they have to fight the current all the time, it’s very stressful and can cause them to get sick. And this can also apply to baby fry, fancy goldfish, and other slow swimmers. This problem is exactly why I strongly prefer short finned bettas. The longer the fins, the more problems they have.

My Betta loves a fast current , he swims right into the flow, rides it to the front glass then puts on a pose as he floats to a corner, then swims back to do it again . He's 2 years old now
I have clown killi's and pgymy corys that do the same. Looks like they are surfing! They love it! I cut down flow because I kept reading how much they don't like, etc. But they weren't happy with that at all. Didn't swim as much, etc. So I turned it back up and off they went! I did fix so it's aiming at back wall and there are plenty of places in tank, heavily planted, for them to go to get away from it if they want. But several times a day off they go!

Another good method that picked up from MD Fish Tanks. Take a clear water bottle and cut the top and bottom off to the width of the outflow. Then cut about a 1/4 of the circumference off the cylinder and bend part of it backwards. Then take and place the curved plastic on the aquarium under the HOB filter and it takes and ramps the water, keeping it on the surface. This takes and slows the flow a little bit.
This video came in literally at the perfect time. I wanted to covert my 40 breeder into an axolotyl tank but I didn’t want to switch my HOB to sponges. Thanks Irene❤️

This video came out at the most perfect time, I actually had purchased the Aqueon tank kit you used in the video and ran in to this issue. Switching over to a sponge filter asap.
I absolutely LOVE my fluval 407 for my heavily planted (and chronically overstocked) 20 gallon tank - it has adjustable flow, which I find incredibly useful. All the plants and hiding spaces give Gomez the Betta plenty of variety in terms of flow. He likes to play with the corydoras sometimes, which I find definitely prefer higher flow rates while they’re being active. Trying to get this 407 established before I switch it to a larger tank, but the extra biofiltration has allowed me to keep hella fish in this 20g before they get the Big Tank Upgrade as well!

I use a plastic soap dish with suction cups as a baffle. Depending on my filter, I'll add some coarse sponge.
I love the aquarium co-op sponge filter, the water fall type made it hard for my betta to swim on that side of the tank.
On my fluval flex 15 which is a great tank I added two aquarium co-op coarse sponge pre-filters on the out put nozzles on the tank. My betta is loving it. For surface agitation I added an airpump and air stone in the first chamber of the rear sump area.

For canister filters buy a prefilter and suff it with filtration wool😉 Great idea with the sponge on the outlet. Just introduced it in my cube.

Thank you for this I plan to have a planted tank for my beta I have looked up several guides and such preparing for the day. I want to make a tank that is very bioactive, similar to Father Fish's fish tanks. I think I want to aim for a 5 year substrate that way debris has time to get through the sand and enter that nutrient rich soil. I am still in the planning stages so I don't personally have any fish yet. I want to get the planted aquarium up first

Good suggestions! I would install a tee fitting on the airline coming off your air pump and install two valves, one to the sponge filter and the other to release any back pressure created by the first valve to prevent stressing the diaphragm in the pump.

As always you did a real bang up job on why HOB Water-Filter Companies like Hagan AquaClear, Tidal, Marineland are not providing them same quality for those who NEED a much smaller Adjustable HOB Water-Filter. I use 2.5G, 5G, 10G for Quarantine and Grow-out Tanks. I use use the 2.5G for my Black Molly Fry. I was using my 5G for a Trio of tiny Least Killifish. I just picked up a few more tiny Fry at an local Aquarium Club Meeting. When they get a bit bigger, I'll move them into a 10G. Meanwhile, I like keeping an eye on them. A dear Fish Friend gave 6 Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco. I added them into the with the Least Killifish since they are so tiny. I just bought the smallest Sponge Filter that I could find locally. I like your ideas of using a tall Driftwood in front of the waterfall flow and to buy your Adjustable Air-Pump along with a guage. Although, I am going for a natural Biotope for all of my Tanks, I am going to look into the stronger close clump like Plants like the Val, Swords, and alike to place in front of the HOB like you recommended here. Meanwhile, I have a lot of Anacharis and Hornwort floating on top. I will pick up a coarse filter tomorrow and to place it the the flow to see if that helps.

I do run 2 seachem tidal 110s on my 55g, but those fish can handle the flow. My betta is in my 15g fluval flex which has a very strong pump, so I just attached some foam with a rubber band around the output nozzles to diffuse the water and create less flow
I use a small water bottle cut to fit the out flow of my Aqua Clear filter, that works great.
For over the hang filters, i "slow" the flow with a long strip of quilt batting. I stick it on the 'slide' part of a HOB, keeps the water nice and polished and helps dampen the flow significantly
I cut a slit down the side of an Aquarium Co-op intake sponge and it fits right over the edge of my HOB’s water return and my glass top 7:14
For me the best is the Hamburger Matten Filter. A must for freshwater shrimp! I don't like the noise of the air pump, so I just use a powerhead instead.
What I used to do is take a piece off the plastic part of those old-school aquarium lids. You know, the ones where it's three panels: two glass panels and one plastic panel that clips to a glass panel. Cut a piece off that and clip that one to the "waterfall" part of the HOB filter.
I have the same filter and did the same thing but for my duck weed not a betta
I have that filter on a 30gal for my betta, and the trick is neglect the filter until it is just a trickle and then he willl be fine

I always kept my Bettas with sponge filter but recently I added CO2 system and I needed some flow otherwise the co2 bubbles where goin straight up to the surface.. so I added an internal filter.. good part is that it has adjustable flow and the Betta is a plakat, hope it goes well..
My placket betta always go towards the little water flow.😂
hi guys! i came for some advice and to see if i can get answers for a question i have. basically, im in college and i’ll be going back home for thanksgiving break, and i can’t leave my betta behind because i don’t have anyone to take care of him (plus i don’t trust many people and my friends don’t have experience with fish) so i wanted to take him home. i’m using a sponge filter in his tank, and i have another empty tank i can start up for him at home, so if i use the filter i have now and put it in the new one, will all the beneficial bacteria from the original aquarium die? i’m worried about distributing my tank and throwing it off balance

How about a Fluval FX-6 for a 5 gallon nano tank? With that, you can get a torrent going which your hillstream loaches will thank you for, and which will kill all other life in the tank. The Fluval FX-6 is capable of keeping the Mississippi River clean and crystal clear. The only reason you might not want to use it to keep the Mississippi clean is that it would scour the bed of the river clear of everything right down to bedrock with its powerful outflow. That could be very exciting for barge traffic on the river.
i have live plants and an air pump/bubbler. can i get rid of my filter? i feel like the flow is too strong and i can't find a way to slow it down
i’m pretty sure you still will need a filter to filter out the fish waste
Over filtration certainly doesn't hurt in other than betta systems.

Yes, many of them do! However, depending on the filter model and tank size, sometimes even the lowest setting can be too strong for some fish, so further modifications may be needed.
I use the cut up water bottle trick ,does a great job
I used the bio wheel paper from an old penguin as my flow baffle.
Our problem is the fish is getting stuck against the intake itself and it's an all in one tank with the filter built in
There are a few factors to consider with filtration. How many fish? Shrimp? Snails? What kind of fish? What's the average size of the fish? Tank capacity and size?

Must have bought a weird Betta. He would swim right up under the filter outlet and "surf" the current down to the bottom. Then he would work his way back up under the filter and repeat. Once tired he would simply swim to the far end of the tank find a plant to lay on and rest.
Here's my question: Why do most small fresh water aquariums not use sumps? I know large fresh water setups, small and large salt water setups use sumps. They hide all the filtration equipment and make the tank look much more professional while providing better filtration and easier water changes that allow you to change water without stressing fish. Im designing my own custom nano sump for my 10 gallon tank and there seems to be very few people that do this. I don't see why not other then cost but for a small tank you can make an efficient sump for very affordable prices. Mine will be 3 extra gallons of water capacity, hold my water heater, allow me to have more surface agitation in the sump for better oxygen levels in the water with my hang on the back filter in the sump without the diffuser. fill up the sump with bio balls, ceramic rings, and crushed coral. You will be able to safely accommodate a massive bioload with more stable water perameters, your fish will have more space. I don't see any disadvantages other then cost. I love your videos btw
I personally think that defeats the point of going nano. You don’t want a large amount of equipment for a relatively small space and the smaller hang on filters are usually more than enough.
