  • Drew flies solo from Lansing, IL (IGQ) to Kenosha, WI (ENW) northbound along the shore of Lake Michigan-right past the Chicago skyline! He also struggles to get flight following on busy frequencies and the pilot door pops open on takeoff.

Just passed my PPL checkride yesterday. Loved watching this. Hoping to make a purchase before too long!

These videos are SO helpful! Especially as a new private pilot who trained at an nontowered airport!

This is great! So helpful. I'm planning on flying to Michigan in October and have never gotten flight following before, and this video has been a big help for what to expect. Can't wait to do the trip!

Lansing is the airport where I learned to fly. Associated Air Activities was the school, way back in the early 90’s. Safe flying.

I can't tell you the times I've been out of the range of the radios and they have tried to contact me and nothing, they finally have another pilot or airline pass the word to switch stations for me. I've had to look at foreflight and find out the center station for the area I was in as well because people just stopped talking. They said they saw me with my squawk but couldn't reach me! I didn't panic, had some great pilots and even airlines get ahead of me. If I hear nothing for 10 mins then I tend to make a radio call and if no one replies, I go to foreflight and look what the center is in that area nearby.

I'm based out of RYY and have been following you on IG. I thought I saw you coming in to OSH. Looked for your plane, but couldn't find it. Great videos! And as a Cessna pilot myself, when one door closes, another one opens...other than that it's a pretty good Cessna.

Lansing is the first airport I ever flew out of in a small plane in high school, I flew over Marian Catholic in Chicago Heights and took some pictures that were on their website homepage for a while. Now I’m living in SoCal planning on getting my PPL to do exactly as you are. Love the videos, you gained a new subscriber! 😁

My home base is also in a Bravo. I've had this same thing happen to me. Thanks for sharing this.

Slightly off subject, but I saw Jimi Hendrix in Atlanta Georgia in 1970 at the race track. Great videos never managed to get my ticket but I’ve always been an aviation enthusiast.

I used to fly into Chicago Executive (before it was closed) flight following was ok but, when I got IFR rating I always filed IFR to ensure that I got Chicago Center, Arrival and Departure. Flew into Midway as well. Traffic gets busy in Chicago and I think its wise to file IFR even in VFR weather.

You do not need to formerly request and get flight following when flying VFR (all IFR filed flight plans MUST be in constant contact with ATC,, so it is automatic for that). When you depart you are given a departure frequency (TRACON)...they will drop you 25 miles from the airport. At that point, fly a bit then pickup an ARTCC yourself. They WANT to talk to you if you are on a long cross country...so simply contact them when you are 30 miles out and you have flight following automatically.

Loving the videos! I have started recording my flights too but can never get the full flight because my GoPro battery dies. I am wondering what you use if anything to keep the camera powered for the duration of the flight?

    • @flymetothefun
      @flymetothefun  2 роки тому +1

I struggle with that too. This was possible because I used The Remote to turn the cameras on and off to conserve battery. I did just buy a battery pack extender that allows you to use 3 batteries per camera. Will be trying that soon. I also know Flight Flix makes a product that lets you connect the cameras up to plane power with a cord.

@@flymetothefun Thanks for the info, I've heard about the flight flix chord,n but not a battery extender. I will have to do some searching around since that sounds easier than running a power chord to any cameras mounted outside.

I purchased battery packs to power the cameras. EC Technology makes a nice unit. Nice to keep one charged in the survival kit too.

Two years late to the party, but it should be noted you could have gone through the Cubs TFR since you were squawking and talking with ATC.

What is “stay clear from the bravo”. Is that like airspace that you can’t be in?

Class B airspace is normally reserved for large/busy commercial airports and you need clearance before entering the airspace.
