How I take care of my orchids

  • And if lived in florida, I could grow these on trees and call it a day 😞
    But since I’m in Indiana, we result to caring for orchid the basic way. The biggest tip is, if your orchid is healthy (no rott or mushy/dying of leaves, or severe plant issues) then there is no need to repot just yet.
    Also, a mistake I’ve seen is potting and orchid in soil. Orchids have those very thick roots and they will not survive in soil. My potting medium of choice is either orchid bark on its own or a combination of orchid bark and spaghnum moss.
    Stay tuned for an upcoming orchid video where I show you what to do once the blooms are gone.

      There is a company in the UK that includes those instructions with their plants. It's in their interests for you to kill the plants, so you buy another. Several of us, who have been growing orchids for many years, tried to explain this to someone last year at the Malvern International Orchid Show. She had bought several orchids from this company and wanted to ask why they weren't doing so well. She refused to believe her ice-cube watering was the reason because that's what the instructions said that came with the plants. If she'd waited until the thunderstorm that came later and poured very cold water through the roof we might have been able to make the point a bit more strongly!

    I purchased several from "box" stores. Got them home, pulled up the clear pot, and found black roots. Pulled everything out, cut off black parts, rinsed, and then repotted in bark. All still alive. Smallest most damaged, may be growing a new flower branch. Room temperature water. Need to buy some orchard fertilizer.

    • @di4085
      @di4085 8 місяців тому

      Distributes just bark?

    • @marystewart1746
      @marystewart1746 8 місяців тому

      @@di4085 Yes. I used a coarse bark designed for orchids to begin with. Some were so root damaged when I bought them they actually needed a medium to hold moisture because they dried out too quickly. (you really have to soak when you used bark) I repotted the worst one with 2/3 orchid bark and 1/3 coarse saw dust. The bark provides air pockets and the sawdust hold a moisture level that does stress the roots. Now I'm also adding a kelp based fertilizer to their weekly waterings.
      Will this work for everyone - No. When you buy orchids from a dealer or grower they are so much healthier and have a better chance of adapting. Those at the grocery store or big box store are already compromised having been grown for mass distribution, travel, poor light & temperature control, over/no watering etc and so you sometimes start with one foot in the garbage can. Also, I bought the smallest most critical plants. Four of six are sending out new air roots now and are putting up new leaves. One is holding its own. And the poorest one has two 4in air roots, is starting a third, is growing its second new central left, but older (original) foliage wilts - I may have to trim it back drastically and hope.

    Hi Krystal. I think orchids are fine in direct sunlight because back home we put them outside-front yard or garden. I am from Philippines and there are a lot a lot of varieties, and they look so beautiful so exotic so bright and so amazingly attractive to people walking by.

    • @debbiethomas3687
      @debbiethomas3687 5 місяців тому +1

      If you are lucky enough to be able to grow them outside they will most likely have a bit of breeze to cool them and possibly dappled sunlight from local trees and shrubs. Most people in the UK, USA etc., can't grow them outside, but have to grow them indoors in their windows. The "no direct sun" advice is because glass magnifies the sun's rays and the leaves will burn.

    a lot of orchids are sub tropic they can handle going with out watered for weeks and then get long rain water periods. they root them self in a crook of a tree and absorb water as the rain water runs off the roots their roots are not made to be inclosed in substrate. so watering can be tricky. people use ice because it slowly trickles giving the roots enough time to absorb water as long as your roots dont freeze their fine.

    I generally live by at set of rules for all plants of Bottom water if possible, if not, avoid getting water on leaves unless specified that they like being misted and avoid water in all crevices under any circumstances.
    Water is often a means for fungus to spread, and while it’s not as rampant for indoor plants, in my food garden many plants actually advise you to avoid getting water on their leaves because it can lead to many kinds of diseases and increase their spread. Strawberries are one such plant which recommended you use a drip hose watering system. (Rain still exists obviously but we can’t control that without a greenhouse.)
    For my orchids I use A folded corner of paper towel to get into all the tight crevices and I’ve have no negative effects from using a bit of cinnamon sprinkled in the crown when I accidentally get water in there. Cinnamon is a drying agent, so I figured it would be very effective at wicking any moisture out of there and so far I’ve avoided crown rot any time I’ve spilled water by doing these 2 things.

You need to soak them for 15 minutes and let that drain after. If the medium is moss or some kind of sponge... They only need to be watered a small amount because that kind of medium will hold onto a lot of water and you will have root rot

    May I ask about your lamp set up? Or your wall set up really.. how long did that take you? Was it very expensive? Thanks for the information about orchids. I was wondering why mine was faltering in the center.. now I know. Another comment suggested putting a tampon in to suck up the extra h2o! I'm gonna try that! And follow your advice about water and repotting.

    I just stick some all purpose fertilizer in a half-full sink and let them sit in it for 20min to 1 hour, depending on forgetting them or not.

    I prefer aerated pots with good quality bark and sphagnum moss. I pour water liberally and don't get the leaves wet. My orchids are happy.

    Hi Krystal, I really enjoy your channel. I like your sass and you are also very informative. So I have orchid plants that are almost 10 years old. Some of them have aerial roots that are 4 feet long. I honestly don't know what to do with the roots so I just let it be. I continually get reblooms. Do people trim these roots? Or do I just leave them alone?

    Get your orchards out of the sphagnum moss ASAP. That medium keeps the roots too wet. Go with at least 80% bark chips.

    Can you give some advice on repotting? And should I loosen up the moss around the roots if I do? I also saw something about keeping them in glass containers to allow the roots to see the light

    Hey I love your channel so much, I'm curious is your electric bill high? I want to get grow light for some plants I'm interested in getting, but I'm worried it will spike my bill..

    The sun thing depends on the type of orchid. Sun vanders (not the one she has) should be outside, in the sun.

    What about air roots? When repotting should I tuck those roots in the pot?
    And leaves are getting too long should I cut the old longer ones?

    sun can absolutely hit an orchid. you have to acclimate it. mine are in a SE facing window doing beautifully.
