I Spent 48 hours in Kyoto | How Empty is it Really?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 гру 2020
- I recently went to Kyoto to make a documentary. Spent a total of 48 hours there speaking to the local Japanese people to get their feelings on how empty it was. We arrived right after a long weekend, and right before the fall travel rush, and happened to capture Kyoto in a way I have never seen. This, is that story.

Glad to be able to share the behind the scenes on this with you!!
If you haven't seen the documentary I went to shoot, you can watch it here:

Thank you so much again to that amazing crew of people who made this possible
If you want to join that crew, this is your official invitation to come join us over on Patreon~ I would absolutely love to have you there! (^-^)
Fun backstory for anyone who is interested in reading it
So something many people don't think of is that during the fall and winter, since Japan doesn't have daylight savings time, the days get really short.
And since Kyoto is surrounded by mountains, that shortens the days even more!!
So the real unseen challenge, was filming almost everything in these super short daylight hours (it was basically dark by 5 pm lol)
But still managed to pull of 3 main videos, a livestream, and 2 videos for the patreon crew
all-in-all not bad! Especially considering that mid-day we kept having to do that human thing and eat lol
But I really hope that you have enjoyed this series!! I am hoping to do more in the future and look forward to sharing! again, I'd love to have you along for the ride!
Beautiful! Thank you!
Next take a quick flight to Finland, to visit Inari here :D
Great video brother, I definitely want to see Kyoto, I hope you and Victor had a great time
thank you for the video!!! Will Japan be open for the summer Olympics?
Have you ever walked to Arashiyama Myoken-dō Temple? I feel like you would like that spot.
As a local, it’s been so surreal for me to see this empty temples, shrines and everything in Kyoto.
I really hope that people can visit again here soon😊
Thanks for an awesome video
It means a lot to me that you, as a local, take the time to watch and leave such a nice comment. Thank you so much~
First place on my list of places to go when all this pandemic nonsense is over.
@@bobstar2683 Please visit us:)
We are waiting for you ☺️👍🏻 let’s celebrate the closure of the pandemic together 💪🏻
As an American, I'm jealous of how immaculately clean that city is.
France is jealous too don't worry.
as a Belgian ...Say sike please .
Respect for where you live is rare
@@cdmanjak It is not rare in Japan. It is a common place for all ages.
@@cdmanjak depends on where you are living and if the local government has respect for its citzens honestly.
I've never seen Kyoto this empty. I gotta grab my camera and go. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take photos of the city.
I’d wait until the fall rush calms a bit
We got there right before it so we were lucky
But yea it’s quite the chance!!
Try to catch Fushimi Inari at night in the snow. It's a scene you'll never forget.
Ah good memories. I can't believe we got so much done in such little time heh. Loved taking footage of those cats and still surprised at how long we stayed at Fushimi Inari.
Loved this adventure, including that special ending. I redeemed myself XD
Lol I didn’t have the heart to admit that we spent over an hour recording cats 😂
They were just so... well they were cats!!
And I don’t know if running away at the end counts as redeeming yourself lol
But I think we’ll All give you a pass on this one 😉
Just wait until they see the next adventure ...
Hey Victor, i have to say: this trip was awesome, full of depth and I love the overall creativity. Stay as strong as ever, you rock!
My wife and I miss Japan so much! We're now based in Canada and we still talk about visiting Japan again. Kansai area was our last trip before immigrating to Canada. Our layover to Canada was in Osaka also. Been to Japan 3 times and we still never get tired of talking about this marvelous country.
I miss Japan so much as well. I've gone 4 times and I still haven't seen enough. To be fair the first two times were on school or organised trips, so I've only been twice as a personal trip, so I've had to see places I've already visited more than once (travelling with friends). I'm really hoping that I might be able to go at the end of next year. All dependant on Covid I guess.
I'm fortunate enough to be from and living in Australia though.
Feel the same, beautiful country, beautiful people.
yer im the same, just cant get enough of it
I would just be happy to visit Canada again. It’s still not open from Covid.
And that is why I live in Kyoto. This was Beautiful.I wondered about how you approached people for your interviews and now I know.
Oh wow, nice to see the Arashiyama area is still as hustling and bustling as ever.
I hope the local restaurants, especially Naritaya Sushi bar, is still open.
I can feel the freezing cold breeze just by looking at the river. One of the perks and charms of being in that part of Arashiyama~
This is so Nostalgic
Hey mate~
Super early on this one eh 😉
Hope you’re well
Thanks so much eh
For some reason i've always liked stepping stones.
something about them just really appeal to me
Me tooooo!
Me threeee!
What movie was Norm referencing when talking about the stepping stones?
@@Call_Me_David Lost in Translation. Scarlett Johansson’s character was in this garden, walking on those stones.
@@Bigwasp80 Ah ok. I haven't watched that yet. Thanks.
This footage reminds me of my first trip to Japan, over a decade ago. It was before the massive tourism boom, with foreigners being extremely rare, no English on signs etc. It was not uncommon to be eerily alone in the temples and streets, especially during the night. This brought back so many memories of me wondering around Kyoto, as clueless as one can be.
Really glad I could bring you back to a slightly simpler time
Thanks so much for watching
What year?
Your background music always goes well with your scenes! The scenery and serenity of Kyoto during this time is amazing and brilliantly captured in your video!
Thank you
That really means a lot
I’ve probably said it a million times, but I can’t express how much I love your videos!
Ah, perfect, another Kyoto video to end the weekend with.
Always brightens my day seeing these video's popup in my feed!
Don't stop what you're doing, the editing and story telling is always inspirational!
Really appreciate that~
Thank you 😊
Omg hi! I love your videos, and your shamisen playing is immaculate!
That’s so kind~
Thank you so much!!
I claim my 10 points, Lost In Translation, and we went there in February for Setsubun.
Another beautiful film 🎥❤
Good job in recording the life of Kyoto during this pandemic. Kyoto is one of the favourite city that I have visited.
😊
The movie is Lost in Translation, 1 of my Favs!
was looking for this comment, didn't understand the stone thing in the video.
Went there in 2007, still yet to do the bar at the Hyatt, thats my only movie location to do spot left for me :D
Thank you for capturing my hometown so beautifully. I miss there.
The scene is from "Lost in Translation". Can't wait till I can come there too!
Nailed it!!
I always love seeing new videos from you! Thanks Norm for brightening my day with this
none of your videos disappoint me! honestly ur my favorite UA-cam right now, and you make me wish I was in Japan exploring with my friends and making friends even more!
1:49 that video is the one that popped out from my recommendations on October 31st, thats how i found your channel xD
Another excellent video. Well worth that final rush, as always ;P I'm still torn between enjoying seeing the quiet streets and feeling sorry for the locals adversely affected by the lack of tourists.
An understandable internal battle
Love the behind the scenes. It puts in perspective how much you do just to be able to get everything perfect. This felt peaceful, but sobering, like walking into nature’s library without whispering…
You know it’s a good video if:
1. It‘s a TokyoLens video
or
2. There‘s cats
We get both so we win the jackpot :‘D
Man, I wish I could experience empty Kyoto, must be great! Also that breakfast..I got so hungry seeing that!!! Thank you for another wonderful video! :)
I almost want to get a cat just so I can start a cat channel lol
@@TokyoLens
Do it !!
Just Do it !!!
😂
Dreaming back to last year when I was at some of the places in this video. I miss Japan sooo much. Hopefully I can go there again in 2021. Thanks for the video. Great work as usual!
Wonderful video as always. The garden looked so serene.
Also, kitties 💜
I have never seen kyoto empty like that even in the early morning or late night.
Love this kind of behind the scenes / vloggy / day-in-the-life stuff Norm. As always, great work and hope to see more soon! Best wishes and take care.
Thank you so much~ All the best to you too, eh
Thank you for sharing the situation of Kyoto! I've been to Kyoto many times but now I live in Tokyo, really miss Kyoto! Your way of approaching people for the interviews is very polite! So nice☺️
Beautiful!! I love Kyoto. I love these types of videos too! The documentary was wonderful but seeing behind the scenes makes it even more. Thank you for what you do!
This is wonderful Norm! I loved the documentary you created. Thank you for inspiring me to explore!!
The tranquility and peace of all the landmarks of Kyoto sent chills down my spine, since the water/ birds/ traffic is a lot clearer then when I was last there. It makes me want to go back right after the pandemic.
Again ... what an amazing video. Thank you for your talents, charm and compassionate openness with others.
the temles ,shrines ,tori gates ,gardens ,musik and architecture just broadcast peace. Amazing video was really relaxing to watch and i would love to see victor in more videos he seems to be a very nice person.
Omg you have no idea how much I appreciate this video! I stuck in Australia and miss my hometown every minute. Thanks so much for uploading!
You are so welcome!
Another spectacular video! Beautiful shots of Kyoto and really showing just how lovely some people can be💖
Also... Victor asleep in the car and running away at the end made me laugh. So wholesome.
Thank you 😊
This one was a lot of fun to make
I guess it IS possible to shoot two videos at once lol
@@TokyoLens always an absolute pleasure to watch! I’m looking forward to what comes next 💖
Thanks for vlogging this, it's truly amazing.
Thank you so much for these videos, i’m always excited to see whats next!
thank you so much!
I’ve been to Kyoto in February. My first visit to Japan and I loved so much. Watching this makes my heart warm and just makes me want to go again soon. Hope you guys are doing well and keeping safe. Cheers :)
My favorite new channel in a while
Been loving this series of Kyoto videos! A quiet Kyoto seems like a dream to visit!
Another amazing video.! Truly, I thank you for sharing your view of this part of the world.
Man, it's so surreal to see Kyoto like this! Will be great to see the hustle and bustle return
I just have to say, amazing job with this!
The shots, the audio, it all feels extremely professional, like something you would have to pay a lot to see, yet here you are releasing it to the public
Well done and keep up your good work! Can’t wait to see what you will be releasing next :)
I have been binge watching the channels for a while, glad i found it
Hope to see more of your nicely edited vids 😃
i can't believe you're a real person, just so pure of light and wonder, no wonder those people responded so well to you!
Beautiful video as always.
So needed this today, thank you and love the outfit
What a great video! Thank you for sharing. My husband and I were supposed to go to Japan in November. Seeing some of those shots made me so emotional. Japan is so beautiful. I hope we get to see it in person soon!
Great video like always loved seeing what was going on in Kyoto :)
Your dedication and attention are so admirable
My experience in Kyoto was the same. Truly truly sweet people everywhere. I miss it so much. I have walked down the Inari shrine steps as the lights came on. Wondrous.
Another great video Norm, loving the content.
Fantastic and fulfilling and wonderful. I'd love to be visiting lockdown Japan right now. Oh well! Next best thing! Thank you for bringing it to us, guys!
Nice to see the back of the scenes of your last video ☺️
Thank you~
Keep up the great content. Love the videos!
another great 1 norm keep up the great work
Kyoto is beautiful, it’s interesting to see it without the crowds of people. Great video ❤️
Thank you for taking the time to do the documentary and sharing with us the behind the scenes.
I've been to Kyoto 2 times and I have to admit, it looks very very quiet and empty.
Hopefully things will slowly go back to normal.
Take care and stay safe.
- from Singapore
I love those landscape shots. They are very aesthetic and nice to Watch.
Beautiful video as always.

Thank you for sharing kyoto's current situation. I've been missing it
Happy that I can bring it to you
I love seeing Kyoto! Makes me so excited to see the same shots you got and knowing I was there. Would have loved to have seen it like you had.
Loved the vid!
Keep on truckin!
I was literally just thinking about that mirror before I clicked this video. Didn't even remember where you encountered it, so you can bet I felt like I had deja vu watching this.
Hey Norm just wanted to thank you for all of the really cool Kyoto content recently! I'm an incoming JET that got my placement in one of the suburbs outside of Kyoto, and assuming nothing else changes with travel due to Covid-19 I'll be moving there in late January so it's really cool to see another perspective of what the city is like right now!
Another great vid as always :)
really loving the content lately!
Thank you~
Practically empty! Still an amazing town with a rich history. Great video!
Really enjoy these videos
I'll be back later norm when I have time
Glad to see u were able to finish the vid
Have a great day/night
Thanks so much!!
always, always love the background music
Thank You for the beautiful tour.
I loved it.
Cant wait to visit japan. Love your style of story telkjv through your videos Norm! Keep up the great work
That garage at 2,33 I was brought up with it, my grandparents home and still my moms home and shop is literally just behind that garage :)
Loved this series
KYOTOOOOOOOO
OH MY GOD
BEAUTIFUL KYOTO
I REALLY LOVE KYOTO
Again Another Video to watch and Just relax while watching before sleep. It releases all you're stress and hardwork. It's simply Amazing! Thankyou.
really appreciate that~
Thank you!
Amazing about the old mountain lady, when you think about hardy old people in the west it’s usually some grumpy grizzled old tough person, that woman was the definition of hardy but so happy. Amazing
The morning started out pretty stressful for me and just watching your beautiful Kyoto footage has done wonders for my blood pressure :-)
You seem to have the ability to cross over into magical worlds. You can't possibly be in this world! At least you're able to shoot video while you're there.
Thank you!!
Love all the contrasts in this video, from more energetic stuff to slow-motion shots (like the flapping crow). My favorite part was Victor waking up in the tunnel, though! Also +1 for cats ;)
Keep on making these great videos, Official Human~
And the best part is
I still have two more videos from Kyoto coming on the Patreon side
So, plenty to look forward to!!
@@TokyoLens awesome! Will definitely be looking forward to those as well 😊
Thank you so much for creating this, and sharing this for those of us who love the city and long to be there at this unique time. I am, as expressed by the people you've interviewed in your other video, half in love and so appreciative for the time for contemplation, but the other half of me misses the ability to wander freely and among others. Kyoto is beautiful.
Ahh the behind the scenes that great doc!!! 👌
can't get over totally empty Kyoto!!!😯
There's something healing about some of yours shots.
What a beautiful video - thank-you!
That was lovely to see. I love Kyoto. What a great video. Thank you for sharing your experience
thank you so much for tagging along
Japan is so beautiful! And so are the people. Lovely, lovely people!
I love this video! This is something I enjoy a lot. It is a really wonderful thing to see something the way I always envision it which I may/may not get to see in that way in my lifetime. The world will get busy again and things would get noisy. I feel this is such a wonderful look to see it, HEAR nature, and dig into the roots of something we take for granted sometimes.
Kyoto is my first stop. Thank you for this
This is such quality content- thank you for sharing. I traveled to Kyoto in 2011 shortly after the Fukushima disaster and had a slightly more crowded but similar experience. Perhaps we will never see it so peaceful again.
You take me beautiful places and I really enjoy it . Thanks for the post .
Its so clean and picturesque. the residents really look after their properties and beyond :)
I had the pleasure of going to Kyoto in the Summer of 2019 for a class and truly it blows my mind to see the city while its so empty. Thank you for sharing this and giving me so many nostalgic sights. Im planning on sharing this with some old classmates!
Wow, six seconds in and I'm tearing up because I miss this place so much. Kyoto is just magical.
How beautiful is that! Such an amazing place.
It's surreal how Kyoto is so empty but beautiful at the same time.
Thank you for your videos Norm.
Very wholesome video!
That was amazing. Thanks so much for doing this, and thanks to Victor as well. It must be exhausting for you guys but really grateful to you guys for doing this so that those of us who are stuck "out of Japan" can enjoy the beauties of Kyoto vicariously through your camera~~!! I miss Kyoto so much...been 5 years since I was there and it was crazy crowded~ sad about Kinkakuji though~
I so wish I could be there just to see it for myself...nonetheless, please keep doing this~ and do get some rest~!!
Looking forward to much more wonderful content like this~!!
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a lot of work
But it was worth every last bit of time effort and everything else that went into it
@@TokyoLens Really really appreciate it~ although it makes me miss it even more XD and I really hate you for it torturing us like that ^^ still~~ it is the best replacement for us~ at least until they open up again, fingers crossed it will be soon~!!
Got to your channel from Abroad in Japan and I'm so glad I discovered it. I recently bought my first video camera and I got inspired by your whole production process. I've got a feeling that I'll learn a lot from watching your videos.
