  • Here's my review of my newly acquired 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited AWD with 164k miles. How does it hold up as a 15 year old car? Better than I could have imagined.

This was my first ever vehicle as a teenager! Such an amazing van; never had any major problems, extremely reliable, great in cold weather, and she was great til the end. Unfortunately she died on me in the turning lane of an intersection, but truly never any problems. Got up to almost 300,000 miles! To anyone who finds this model, grab it right away! Not a showstopper, but very good car.

We have a 2005 XLE. 233,000 miles and still going strong! A few minor annoyances fixed (sliding door actuators, and lift gate arms) but no mechanical issues other than standard maintenance. Would love something newer, but can't justify replacing this solid kid hauler!

I have the 2006 Sienna Limited AWD (final year of this version of the Sienna) with only 74,000 miles. I keep her in my heated garage under a tarp and she only comes out when we take long family trips (99% of her miles are highway miles). She has been through all of California, up to Oregon, Washington, and the Candian border, through AZ (Grand Canyon) and Monument Valley. She saved our lives when we drove down an ice road in Lake Tahoe and the antiskid feature prevented us from going off a cliff. Her paint is flawless, with only one small scratch done in Napa Valley. When she goes to the Toyota dealership (last visit to have the timing belt changed since she is 15 years old now) the service advisors walk around her and admire her condition. They made the comment, "You really take good care of your Sienna." I said, "You should see my other cars. They are the same."

The center console comes out of the front so that you can put it in between the middle bucket seats, or next to the passenger side door if you want to move that seat to the left in order to make more of a bench seat in the middle row, which is why the shoulder belt is mounted to the seat instead of the pillar on that side. It latches into the floor in both those places the same as it does up front.

We have a 2004 Sienna LE with 201,000 miles. Quite simply the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Just wear and tear items and fresh oil every 5,000 and I could jump in it right now and drive coast to coast without a worry. These vans are bulletproof. Bought it when the kids were young for sporting events. Been all over, Yellowstone, Colorado, Mt. Rushmore. I have an Accord and wife has a Mazda 6 but we can't let go of the Sienna. Would recommend it to anyone.

Love this vid. For me, 2nd gen Sienna is the best looking. Most of them here in CA are LE models but yours is XLE and Limited, Wow! I like the color too, makes your van look more luxurious. For me, the only missing is the back up camera. With run flat tires, I used to have them on my BMW 5 Series, but I hated them cos they are expensive to replace, very heavy, noisy and makes the ride firm. I replaced them with touring tires and bought a spare tire. But the spare tire occupied half of the trunk and the battery is located underneath the trunk where the spare tire is usually placed on other vehicles. Now I have a tire mobility kit instead of the spare tire.

    • @KirkKreifels

We had an '05 Sienna LE AWD bought it new and sold it after 75k mi in 2013 when we went to the UK. After 4 years, we come back when got ourselves another 2nd gen Sienna, an '09 LE FWD with 90k mi. Have over 394, 000 miles on mine(2004 sienna awd LE). Best thing I did was put on regular tires and have a spare. Never had a flat on the road and run flats may have more safety but normal tires make the sienna much better drive quality and muchare longer lasting tires. Driver door clicks and power doors no longer work. I have 2 new 2019 Toyota higher end Suv's but hard to been a van for moving stuff. I will miss it when it is gone soon

While I have no doubt as to the quality and reliability of Toyota, you can get a bad one with any brand. At 72,000 miles, my transmission went out in my 2004 Sienna XLE and regrettably had to be replaced. At 112,000 miles that transmission also went out and had to be replaced as well. Mechanics told me there was a design flaw in that first model year Sienna with the transmission, that was corrected in later model years, but Toyota would not cover the repair. Even though we loved the van, after the second replacement, we traded the van. I still would not hesitate to buy Toyota again. I guess someone had to get a bad one, as can happen in all makes.

I have a 2005 Sienna with 211500 miles on it. Bought it with 96000 miles. Covered a lot of miles with this one. Been from Pa to Ca 3 times and all over the east as will as just everyday driving. When it's polished up it looks just as good as this one. unfortunately the finish on the wheels are trashed. I am currently getting the water pump timing belt and coolant flush services done and will be looking for another 50000 out of it hopefully. I also am getting both Catalytic converters replaced. will be using Magnaflows cat's. Hopefully that will free up some power from it. This van has been good and have no regrets getting it. My only complaint would be I can't seem to keep brakes on it with out them getting hot and warping after just 6 to 9 months. It seems like every year I am ether replacing the front or back brakes. From what I've read this is a problem with these. Slightly undersized brakes. other then that we love it.

Front brakes and rotors are a common problem on all minivans due to weight/heat. Toyota thought it would be brilliant on 3rd gen 4runners to use Tacoma brakes and rotors. After three sets, I did all the TRD mods. Including Tundra crew cab largest brakes 231MM. That included going from a 16" to 17" TRD wheels. For your Sienna, I would look into high end slotted rotors. You'll come out ahead in a five years.

Think I'd prefer this over the more recent Siennas with the 2GRFE engine. The 2GRFE seems to have too many "landmines" buried in it. It might be very reliable in general but if you get unlucky you might need a whole new engine.

I love the interiors of Toyotas in the 2000s. They had so much attention to detail, used quality materials and they aged well. Toyota interiors these days are so cheap feeling.

I just saw a crash test for the last row seats, it’s not safe in the past row if you get rear ended. I never thought of that when my kids were little. I just cringed at the thought of it now.

If you get a pro tire repair kit, it would be like a 2nd spare and most likely save you the tire change hassle.

If you’re wise you don’t need to destroy your pocket by getting into a massive debt financing a new or used expensive car
A well maintained year 2000-2007 Sienna can be bought cash for around $3-$5K and it’s a super reliable vehicle for hauling people and large equipment and these go practically half a million miles before needing an overhaul

The game with driving the Sienna is can you drive it so smooth that everyone falls asleep?
Also, can you drive it entirely between 1500 and 2000 RPM to maximise fuel economy?
Unfortunately run flat tires and AWD are spoiling the power..

Question is, whether 9000 CAD (7000 USD) is a good price for 170K miles? There are quite a lot 2Gen selling for this price.
I mean, for 20'000 cad it's easy to get 3rd gen with 100K miles. BUT, does it worth it? For that price I can get TWO second gens, just in case, the first one dies.

Ah, pushing my buttons. ONE of best family haulers ever made. Add AWD to that and it's near perfect for cruising with the kidz.
Kirk, take it on the higway and you'll get 28 MPG at 70 MPH. Try that in a GX or LX.
Kirk, what's with the cheap ass radar detector??
