Women: "Horses are prey animals. You have to make sure you gain their trust so they know they are safe with you." Men: "Horses are herd animals. You have to make sure you gain their respect so they know they have to follow you."
I do the both of them with my animals, they should respect, and trust me, the only cases in which my animal should be scared, is when they’re doing something dangerous to them or others and I need them to know that they should be scared because it is dangerous (my dog running onto the road or carelessly approaching/chasing other dogs and animals for example, could get someone else badly hurt or even killed, or he could get himself badly hurt or even killed, and if he hurts someone else or someone else’s animal, he could also get put down, it’s better that he’s a bit scared of the road, or cautious around new animals and people, than dead because he’s reckless)
IMO you need to have both. Not enough respect and they like you but consider you on the bottom of the pecking order. Too rough and they fear you but don't like you.

Separating the flakes of hay is proper. You can check for any sticks that can hurt a horse. Find beetles inside the hay. Shake out any dust if there. Some bales can contain harmful things. Tack should be kept indoors.
