  • They've flown all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico, in search of language revitalisation schemes and relationship building between native cultures. The Native American Community Academy have held a long relationship between Māori since the early 2000's - today they've landed with a whole new fleet of students eager to learn and experience off Māori.

    I'm mixed with Native American Indian and African American born in south Africa and I love seeing two beautiful cultures coming together in unity. I'm still learning which Native American Indian tribe that my grandfather and grandmother are from and this encourages me to take the steps to learn who I am as far as my Native American roots. I feel that even though I'm not of New Zealand decent that they are my brothers and sisters in culture heritage and traditions. All third world cultures are in some way related to each other and have a lot of history to share with each other. That is something I have always felt deep in my spirit and soul.my love and respect to all of my brothers and sisters of New Zealand and all of Polynesian Islands. By the way I have a deep respect for the Haka as well I was blessed to see some videos over the last three or so years and is beyond words on how much the Haka touches my spirit and soul. I truly believe Polynesians are of mixed bloodlines. One is from Asia, the other is from ancient America and elsewhere. I think Maoris have a lot of native American in them from more than 2,000 yrs ago. If you look at them, especially in their traditional attire, they look a lot like native Americans of the United States, especially those east of the rockies. Matter of fact, there is a hyposthesis that north Native Americans sailed up the Great Lakes and into the Atlantic, reaching parts of Europe first, before going around to settle the Pacific islands of Polynesia, intermarrying with the populations of Asian origin, and thusly produced the Polynesians we know today.

      Here is an interesting story - the geneticist Susan. W. Serjeantson noted that the Maori of New Zealand are genetically linked to certain Indian tribes of Alaska. She noticed that the HLA BW48 antigen is a component of the Indian genes: NA-Dène: Tlingit, Haida and Kwakuilt of Canada. But for the rest of the Polynesians they are from Taiwan, but thereafter they mixed with the Papuas which gave a new people which the blood group is - B4A1A1A haplogroup.

    • @theephraimite
      @theephraimite Рік тому

      @@Sariel555 that’s very interesting, but that’s not the whole story. The rest of Polynesia do have blood connections to Native Americans, just not as much as Maori do. As for connections to Taiwan, that is still a theory, though there are evidence of a south east Asian connection.

      Tor Hayerdal made an epic crossing of the Pacific in the 1950s on the Kon Tiki raft, to prove that polynesian peoples could have originated in Sth America, came across the Pacific in a big arc, leaving behind communities in Hawaii, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tahiti and lastly in NZ. The technology of DNA testing was not available back then, but he did take hair samples in his voyages. It was only in 2004 that the hair was tested back in Norway and yes, there was a strong trace back to Peru and Chile.
      But its not the point. Polynesian people share this and there is common folklore shared in all Oceania.
      When the British arrived in NZ to colonise the country they thought it would meet little resistance like in Australia. Not so, after quite a number of massacres. The Maori and the British negotiated the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 to make peace and for the Maori to retain control over land and fishing rights. The British fostered this acknowledgement and today, in NZ, we have a masterclass in racial tolerance. All NZ school children, regardless of racial origin, are taught Maori customs and culture, learn all the sacred songs and the dances with the short and long poi.
      In Sydney, which is the home for thousands of NZers, that culture is taught here too. I was at a staff Xmas party for one of the bigger banks in Sydney. When the eating at the long tables was over, A Maori leader here on holiday, got up and asked how many women were from NZ? Twenty or so put there hands up. Out came a guitar, the women all stood on the tables and we were treated to a full on concert taking an hour where the women danced and sang a number of beautiful Maori songs and dances. The last song was the Maori farewell. They were all crying as well as half the audience by the end. I will never forget it. THAT is what NZ is about and the rest of Polynesia.
      Everyone in Australia and NZ is deeply aware of the plight of the Indian nations in North America, which was nothing short of genocide, and it was wonderful to see representatives from these nations sharing their culture.

      MantisAtlantis I think so! The two cultures share similarities like wearing feathers( like in older Maori photos) carvings like totems and tikis in Hawaii! Look at the natives in Alaska and then look at the Maori, cousins if you ask Me! But I've been wondering the same thing for a while now because I'm part native american(Cherokee my great grandmother) and when I hear south Pacific language, music and see the culture it feels familiar and something resonates with me like it belongs! Crazy right

Where do you think our Kumara (Sweet Potatoes), longhouses (marae) and totem poles came from? Ours is a bit more detailed, but then again we did pass through Southern Asia on our way down to the eventual land of the long white cloud. More design is a given. :p But we took from every culture we passed, treasures to be kept safe and though they may not be many we have treasures that belong to you. Treasures of culture, and art. It’s weird being a mestizo with 46% Native American dna I can’t call my self Native American or else ppl from within the culture who have less than 15% native blood and are majority Europeans get angry even though there ancestors are the reason we lost our Native American traditions

      Now that is where change needs to start and we Māori recognize that and accept anyone of Māori heritage (no matter the %) or not to embrace our culture as it is the only way to survive and thrive.

    • @yep9657
      @yep9657 4 роки тому +2

      Well it’s not that big of a stretch if you simply just look at human migration. The Indians came from the north and inhabited North America and South America hence the reason that Native Americans look like native southern Americans especially Peruvians. Ya Maori believe we come from the islands of Hawaii or the area surrounding it which is near the continent of North America so it isn’t a stretch in saying that we might come from the same ancestors. Plus there are heaps of evidence that suggest that Polynesians travelled the pacific and hit South America many times as there are bones of chicken and other foods that are native to Polynesia. So I’m not really capping.

    Well..we have common DNA bc we r from the ppl who owned the Pacific! I'm Mexican from 2 Mexican tribes Huachelo and Yaqui, come to Mexico and visit your cousins! Was in Sinaloa Mexico last year. My niece married a young man from New Zealand, his dad is half white and Maori, his mom is from China. It was an international event for sure. Different accents and language on every table. Mariachi, big kettle drums from New Zealand, Chinese dragons, lots of red! The bride's family r from 2 Mexican tribes, the dad's family is from Sinaloa, Mexico, they self identity as Mexican American. It was beautiful! Even the staff at the resort was impressed!
