I am happy to see that companies start to understand that people want to exchange data, but are still loyal to the company that made a software that fits best to their needs. Absolutely great move! And im looking forward to see CLAP as well in many other DAWs. 🌻
So I use both Cubase and Bitwig. I like both for different purposes…Cubase has a better arranging and mixing workflow, post-fader inserts, better stock plugins, built in control room for monitoring…Bitwig has better MIDI sequencing and sound design options, easier gain staging workflow, better control surface scripting and the clip launcher for nonlinear production. I think this a great addition to make moving back and forth between the two easier.
this will probably break quick and easy if you use stock plugins. they are vastly different and mapping their features and settings into a neutral and generic "expression" and have each DAW recreate the same sounding FX is a challenge at best. from what I've seen the user's also not told what data and settings were "lost" or could not be "recreated". you'll probably loose half the song after the 2nd round trip if the song contains anything but plain chopped up audio data and MIDI information. 3rd party VST presets and settings might also survive. Cubase lacks the arranger concept of Bitwig and there's no built in set of alternatives to even mimic this feature. It'll be a long, long and tough road for this format to become "lossless" and usable for larger productions. OMF also failed decades ago for the same and other reasons.
Whaaaaaat ? 😳😳😳😳 that‘s would be awesome for me 👍🏻 I worked more than 20 years with Cubase, than I switch to Bitwig 😍 so now I can use my old project again and convert it to Bitwig💯🚀
Studio One and Bitwig were the first to use Daw Projects if i am not mistaken. It works decent. It replaces the stock plugins if it can. Steinberg is full of Geniuses, Super Engineers. if Daw projects is open source i pretty sure they can improve it 10X
with Bitwig basically around the block, I'm confident they'll both push compatibility. afaik Bitwig were the ones that came up with the original idea. I'm actually very surprised Steinberg chimed in.
Easy, just ad what bitwig has : ability to see all the vst's directly on the bottom of the sreen for more intuitivity and creativity, and a grid to make loops and structure a song like bitwig and ableton. If they do that, i buy it 100%. Cubase didn't evolved since the beginning, they should make their DAW more universal and not just focused on mixing/mastering mainly. Each update brings what, the same thing with 2% improvements ?... i've got no pleasure with cubase, it's always too long to go to the vst's, structure the song, with bitwig or ableton, you can order sequences and organize your track so intuitively.. anyways... i just say that because i'd like to get ableton live with cubase layout ;)
I have a few older Cubase projects I'd like to import into Bitwig. I think I'll install the trial version and uninstall it right after the import. :D Also, the part at @6:22 totally caught me off guard. I laughed hard, then cried even harder.
I think this is the way to go. I have some super old Cubase projects that I'd like to migrate to Bitwig too. Cubase has just added a migration pathway to Bitwig for its users, lol.
Ay I know this is still a work in progress but honestly I'm just happy other daw are supporting this format, it'll get better with future updates and hopefully they don't drop this project format because I feel like this will change a lot for engineers and producers
Not sure if anyone has peeked over at the new Cubase 14 update, but it's as if it took massive inspiration from Bitwig. It has modulators, with similar naming and layout and design - even a "Tool" with volume and panning. I'd love to hear what you think about this.
I like to switch from BitWig to Cubase sometimes for mixing (mainly for switch of perspective and workflow) I love BitWig and Cubase actually, but mostly use them independently
@@MaximusWhyman totally agree. this ugly brown orange is so ugly. performance in cubase is also better, i checked with pigments and other hungry 3rd party plugins. on the other side bitwig channel structure (can be midi and/or audio) and nesting is very nice. i will upgrade cubase from 13 to 14 for sure. i still have studio one 5.5 as well and am looking at ableton live 12 which is the best for techno prods imho. at the end it is what you program in the keyeditor between kick and snare, the quality of the melodies, basslines and drums which makes the difference not the daws. Groovy cheers to the producer colleagues here ,)
I believe the reason this could now be supported at all in Cubase 14 is their addition of Modulators. The lower third basically follows Bitwig's idea of Modulators -- with less colours of course 🙂 You can automate all sorts of shit in Cubase. Automation data in DAW format is planned for a maintenance release.
Cubase six was my first DAW I started releasing my hip hop projects under....good times. I do have Cubase 13 but it barely gets used now because I'm pretty much in Bitwig all the time. And as much as the new cubase looks great, Bitwig has had modulators already but this file transfer would be great because I have years of projects in Cubase so would be cool to bring over as a project file to Bitwig. Ever since the 12 update to cubase it stoppped running well on my PC and my PC is no slouch and runs other DAWs like butter but for some reason Cubase runs like crap and can't utilize all my multithreads or cores.
I would like to use this so I could just bounce everything in place, disable/remove all fx and import in a daw that has a native Dolby Atmos, Ambisonics or video player and would keep the project format similar so it would be easier to start mixing/whatever I'm doing.
dude, for start, learn a little about how cubase works. It has many advantages over abletone and bitwig. It is extremely flexible and fast by the way. A lot of things that are simply missing in abletone and bitwig and that are crucial for cubase users and those purposes . Yeah bitwig is unique in its own way, especially for writing music... grid, total modularish nature... But it simply lacks those tools through which cubase is used. Cubase is simply wider in terms of possibilities. Ultimate DAW. For large projects, god-like mixing workflow, detailed audio work and outstanding stability. I am a bitwig user and I know about the possibilities. These are different daws. But believe me, cubase definitely worth the money and is very convenient for creating music. Especially after the updates and entry into the territory of ableton\bitwig. but I understand your dawish jealousy, it hapends a lot between sects in intrnet))... a little infantile from the side))
I believe StudioOne uses daw project format. I'd love to have a standard format between DAWs. Less about me needing to use more than one DAW and more for collaboration with others or sending to a mix engineer.
@6:08 You might want to ask Hans Zimmer about why he makes music in Cubase. ;) I agree with "There's lot of work to do" though! Dawproject has a lot of room to grow! I personally would love it, if i could import live performance-recordings of Bitwig into Cubase, while maintaining the Bitwig-VST-Preset-Macro-Knob assignments&automationlanes ... would be a dream.
I'm actually very surprised that Steinberg is joining in. When I learned about the format from the Bitwig blog my first thought was: well, that's nothing Steinberg will build into Cubase. Ever. I'm glad to be proven wrong as I'm an occasional Bitwig user. I'd be even more surprised to hear Apple would support the format in Logic (not that I care).
I love bitwig but let's be honest, the way cubase displays waveforms and midi in the timeline arranger is a lot more useful, just look at 8:50 in bitwig it's just colored squares that looks empty and i know you can zoom in or change the size of things but overall i always find bitwig does this kind of stuff
Most of your comments about Cubase are just due to the fact you don't know the product. I would have exactly the same comments if you ask me to use bitwig: I will find it absolutely ugly and totally unusable.

DAWformat *requires* compromise between DAWs since there are probably as many differences as similarities. Rewire is what I would prefer, but that is probably a logistical nightmare for someone to manage.

Acoustic and electric music (jazz, rock, pop, funk, fusion). The main case for bitwig is when you only sequence virtual instruments, loops and samples, when you have no real instruments.
Studio One also supports dawproject, but honestly… why waste time on this? Exchanging project within the same daw is already undoable. One missing plugin and your gone. The only way this could somewhat work is using only samples and stock plugins. Stock synths between daws is already impossible imho.
