Hi! Thanks for an informative video. I have a 2016 Giant Propel with Giant SLR0 11 speed wheels. They have DT Swiss hubs and freehub that have a ratchet system. Would this freehub work on those wheels?
I know that what I m about to ask has little to do with the video but I'm assuming that those of us watching it are into wheels: any of you have any experience with FFWD wheels? They have some nice wheels with DT Exp hubs. Thanks!!
Hello, the red washer goes right through the hub and stops against the bearing? Is there a gap between the bearing and the toothing? It happens to me that the red washer moves laterally and the ratchet jumps when pedaling, could that be the problem
Awesome video James! Thank you 🙏. However I’ll be honest in saying I had no idea how a rear hub works and the importance of how it sounds cracks me up. I’d love to see a ‘How it works and why it’s important’ series. Deep dive on it! Your fast cadence and knowledgeable articulation is compelling. Keep it up! 👍
Thanks for the video, I recently cleaned out the old grease in my Roval Rapide CLX 240 Ratchet EXP hubs. I replaced it with the DT Swiss special grease. After putting it all back together, when I wind up the cranks and let them go, they continue to spin for a little while. The cranks should pretty much stop spinning shouldn't they? Have I put a little bit too much grease in? Or should I wait and see what happens after a few rides? Thanks
Very clear and simple explanation. I bought the ARC 1400 DICUT 50MM wheels, with the hope of upgrading the ratchet to 54T. Then i realised later that this is a completely new hub. Do you reckon there will be replacement ratchets in future? Also, replacement ratchets would be expensive, as they are integrated into the bearing. Hmmm
That would be a great video to make. At the moment I have not taken one entirely apart (I don't own a EXP hub yet) but when I get a chance or buy one, I will certiantly dive deep into it. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@Jamesthebikeguy oh okay I just bought one and im not sure if i should go to the bike shop cause I don't really have the tools I need . But it does say you don't need to do the work now you also have to think about how much the bike shop will charge you for the labor work or can you just buy the tools for more or less the price of the labor and do it yourself?
So is the 18t, 36t, or 54t Better in terms of less friction when ur coasting??? Or the teeth have other variables than just friction like it can be more durable for say sprinting or something and or for those who want simply a louder hub? That said if u had the cash flow for either the original 240s or the 240s EXP which one would u buy?
It is removable with a special tool, just like the older hubs had that lock ring that you had to undo inside, this fixed ratchet is still that same lockring, just now it also acts as the 2nd ratchet. (Tool needed is different now than the original tool. Just Google DT SWISS EXP lockring tool)
the patents for the star ratchet system expired a few years ago and so you are starting to see clones or outright copies... so dtswiss had to tweak the design for new patents and also marketing purposes... there is really no other benefit to this system.. its even harder to upgrade the ratchets
It's been a while since their patnet expired, Mavic has had their Rapid 360 hubs for quite some time. This is lighter, and it does add a wider bearing stance so regardless of what "marketing purposes" this serves, it does also give a benefit. Worth trading in your DT240 with the old system for a DT240 EXP? Well no, but if you were buying the hubs today, the new one would be marginally better.
If someone will make a custom inner engage ring that will replace the inner locking ring and the one from two rachet ring ,in the old dt hubs you will have a similar hub as exp.except the new bearing location that is wider in new exp hubs.
Exp - like Exp-onential fail, as I hear they have a big issue with quality of those. Actually if it would be law-obiding state, there would be a recall done by DT.. :( ... oh well.
Nope, open unsealed bearing, integrated bearing/ratchet. Oh boy. I can see that bearing failing day and night. They know this. Every mechanic knows the freehub gets filthy fast and all that gunk will go straight into that bearing. Im calling this a fail.
"What's Inside DT Swiss EXP Hubs"? Low quality (compared even to previous models) ratchet and smaller (lighter but not long lasting) bearings. That is it.

Wish my end caps came off that easy when replacing the front wheel bearings.
I got the roval rapide CLX with these 54t ratchet. Super loud and I love it
so when the built in ratchet is worn out you have to replace a lot more than just 2 small ratchets?
Looks great man
Thanks!
Nice video 👍 how can I remove tha bearings from my dt swiss 180 and maintenance

Hi, thanks for your video. Would it be fine to place a previous generation Ratchet freehub body into a Ratchet EXP mechanism?
Awesome look

Check if the bearings are worn out, if it stops doing it if you loosen the axle, it's the bearings thst need replacing
How will you replace that internal drive side bearing?
Hello james want to ask
what is bearing hub type
6902 rs or 6802 rs?
need answer for front and rear Hub also free hub body .
thanks

They already have replacement rachets of varying engagement
Do you need a spacer on the free hub to run the NX Eagle cassette?

Excellent video. I have DT240 EXP so my question is: going from 36T to 54T what’s needed tools wise over the none EXP hub? Thank you
You need the EXP Dissambly tool: PN# HXTXXX00N8387S

Hi, Good follower here of your channel.. Will thia
ratchet exp freehub body fit standard dt swiss hub from er1600 and lower wheelsets?
great video i think you guys should make a video i how to remove the 180 hub and install the ratchet EXP do you just add it ? or not please explain

My DT hub is a little quieter. It’s the 18 tooth. My favorite hubs. Then Hope.
The Sound depends on, how much grease you use. With less grease you have a louder sound.
Sir which has high power of engagaement bet DT swiss 370 with 3pawl vs shimano Fh-mt410-b. Thank you
Could you please do a video on replacing the bearings inside the hub on those Roval wheels. Cheers

Doe you think it might be possible to convert a star ratchet hub to an exp hub?
No
can you upgrade the original rachet to Rachet EXP?
Hi mate my original 350 with star ratchet is running fine with only one spring? Will this be ok?
Hmm interesting.
Wait a minute, this design is very similar to my giant slr 1 wheelset freehub. How many teeth does the rachet have? The giant slr1 have 30t
They come either 36t or 54t
what happens when the inner/permanent ratchet gets worn. replace whole hub?
