This album is interesting because you can hear Four-Tet’s influence all over it, especially in the sequencing. A lot of the tracks on Sound Ancestors are stretched out, where most of Madlib’s other tapes have shorter beats reminiscent of a beat tape (30 seconds - 2 minutes max). It is interesting to hear an album produced by an amazing producer be arranged and sequenced by a completely different producer. But it’s even more surprising that Madlib let go of his work, as he is very specific about what he wants his sound to be (see stories of him only giving 2-tracks to artists because he doesn’t want the palette he’s created to be destroyed by an engineer).
I agree, Beat Konducta 5-6 is one of his best releases in terms of references. Because it’s a Dilla tribute, there’s all sorts of samples from other tracks he and Dilla made together, and I’m sure a ton of samples that he’s speaking to Dilla with directly. I would call it another near perfect example of a classic madlib album, bridging the gap between beat tape and something else more complex and original
this was one of my favorite albums of 2021. it's not his most impressive work by any means but it is a very slept on project, maybe the fact that it's only 2 years old is why and perhaps in the future it will be appreciated a bit more but only time can tell. a lot of the tracks are very touching, and i'm a big fan of four tet, his contribution to this record enhance the experience even more for me.
Sound Ancestors is so dope. Like the production on this is different. If you notice, normally madlib loves being dirty in a dilla esq way, Four Tet cleans it up and it has this polish to the tracks that I've never heard. It's cool seeing Madlib got out of his comfort zone. Also Duumbiyay is a banger.
Super underrated. It's wild that I remember started listening to him way back in the Lootpack era and Four Tet was not long behind. Both of these guys has been relevant in the music space since the early 2000's for me. Fucking insane that Four Tet is still headlining or subheadlining festivals while still remaining busy with his projects.
I love how HEBDEN loves him so much, every show of him he would stand behind him the whole show admire every second of his sets. This is how music can connect souls. Madlib is a legend
Will just copy what I wrote on the album on here. You can hear the echos of hundreds of years worth of culture and music history in every track on this album. So many beautiful melodies and textures from every era, background and lineage compiled and collaged together by a couple of true heads. To say this album is a masterpiece really is an understatement..the spirits of all the greats, from jazz musicians to brazilian funk drummers, alive once again to create the ultimate afterlife supergroup album. I can definitely feel Dilla and DOOMs presence here too. Enough waffle but it made me feel the same as when I heard Untrue for the first time. Chills. Thanks.
This was my second ever vinyl record I've purchased. (Cheat Codes was the first) It's just phenomenal honestly. It's the one of the only albums I can play on repeat. GOAT producer, only rivaled by Dilla or Blockhead
i’ve been meaning to listen to this album since i first heard road of the lonely ones while playing gta, but i never got around to it. This video is giving me that push i needed to actually turn this record on. Thanks!
Awesome video 🖤You once again upped your animation game. Masking out all those portraits must have taken a lot of time... The video length of 8:08 is the cherry on top ;)
finally someone is talking about this masterpiece, it's a pure pleasure to listen to. the track Duumbiyay is very uniqe. just a nice album to have on vinyl!
I tried to get the instrumentals of "Stoney Jackson" a couple years after it came out, the guy at the record store laughed at me, EVERYONE had already bought it out
coming into this video i was expecting some random tape but it was sound ancestors, which is one of my favourite albums of his soooo i think there are much more underrated madlib albums out there
@2nd beat on the 4 dilla joint may be my fav beat ever. Soul levels unmatched. And the second half of one for quartabe (right now), chino, and hopprock are some of my fav joints ive heard in a while as well.
I think the big difference in sound is that so much of Madlib’s stuff is in that Lo-fi sound. It’s like, there’s nothing wrong with a nice big studio production sound, hiphop headz be like, “it has to sound dirty and raw”, but it’s like, stuff has moved on from that aesthetic, technology and music
Yeah. Great comment. Dre started getting high quality studio sounds in the 80s. But I think he’s a rare example. 40’s production is also highly polished. I guess it depends on what hip hop you listen to. Peace.
One of my favorite Madlib albums. Steadily going back to Road for the Lonely ones, Hopprock and etc. The mix is entrancing..it what I Imagine boom bap on acid to feel like. Rs
tbh I only knew about the album after hearing road of the lonely ones on GTA but since then it's been something I've stuck on whenever I need to do work etc. somehow I didn't even know it was a thing despite following madlib's work for years
I thought it sucked to be honest. Regardless of what samples/recording techniques he used, the final result didn't really grab me. It just felt very sterile compared to his other works
Peace to Yesterday's New Quintet Ps That Serious song with Dilla and Four Tet is my ish. Guilty might be on that track too. Pps I bought a copy of this album after I heard That Road of Lonley Ones
@@OllieLoops The Unseen, Soundpieces or Champion Sound probably. But then there's bits of the Beat Konducta series I'd stick on before Sound Ancestors, because they don't sound like something my Mum would've played at a dinner party in 1995.
0:32 Somehow, it doesn't sound like you said "Sound Ancestors" there. And to be honest, I thought this video was going to be either about "Dil Cosby Suite", Lootpack's "Soundpieces: Da Antidote!" or "The Further Adventures of Lord Quas", and not his newest album, which just turned 2 years old. Great editing and nice narration!
I picked up this album when it first dropped. I think it is great, and a cool collaboration. My only critique is that the mix sounds a bit thin overall.
Jesus sound ancestors was an amazing listening expirence and great visuals. Most underrated album is Saturday Morning Remixes 2. Half the tracks missing off youtube. Can only buy it from sketchy sources and it’s unskippable start to finish. Luckily my homie downloaded a torrent of it in 2009 and it’s never left my itunes account since then. 😊
@@OllieLoops check it out if you can. Especially Memory Lane(that track is on UA-cam). IMO best Madlib beat of all time. Samples Minnie Ripperton’s Memory Lane but does it so well. Really good track. Yea just goes to show how close madlib and four tet really are

Great write up. Personally I think his Beat Konducta Dilla tributes are his most underrated releases. So much goodness and so heartfelt
Thanks. That’s a good call. I should revisit that series.
I agree, Beat Konducta 5-6 is one of his best releases in terms of references. The history of the loop digga is up there as well
sooo true, so many crazy dope beats on that
They’re incredible, but receive a lot of love all round so I wouldn’t say they’re underrated

You guys nailed it. This album is the clearest and most artistic I’ve ever heard Madlib. The sounds really come out the speakers and grab ur soul.

Two for 2 was special. Like he channeled that shit
He did. Sounds like something Dilla did.

Good comment. They’ve been around for a while. And they are both prolific and eclectic. Pretty sweet collaboration on this album.
Dang it you just introduced me to a ton of new amazing music and my wallet is screaming.
Well, the good news is that music holds its value. It's not a bad investment.

Sound Ancestors was my 1st Madlib album and got me diggin deeper into his discography
That’s awesome. He has a very consistent and deep catalog. I would recommend exploring all of it.
Well researched and presented as always. High quality stuff, thanks!

‘In Search of Stoney Jackson’ and ‘Pardon My French’ I feel are his most slept on projects. I do however absolutely love ‘Sound Ancestors’

I agree with this
It really is a fantastic album

It's true. Refreshingly clean sound quality opposed to the older stuff. Big Krit did Lonely roads best tho check that
