they are both good - depends on what background you stand in front of.
there will never be a "one camo works everywhere".
mtp was designed for afgan and dpm for uk.

Actually MTP is multi terrain pattern, and can be used in any country some work better than others... and excluding snowy areas where as dpm is for any forest/jungle areas (basically anywhere green)

"Multi terrain pattern" is exactly that. Jungle AND desert where as before, it was dpm for jungle, and desert for desert.

Multicam was marketed back in the day with the slogan that went something like: "Better to have a camo that works alright anywhere, than one that is perfect somewhere but completely useless everywhere else." I would say that sums it up pretty well.

Both patterns are pretty cool but in my opinion they could both use some improvements. The DMP is effective at close range but it's too dark like most patterns it tends to black blob when you get beyond 15-20 yards, whereas the MTP is very effective at longer distances up close it's too light and can easily be spotted. But great video though it was a good demo, I really enjoyed it.

Not true, wore these for years in the Army and once washed a few times DPM blends right in. MTP is much too light for europe and lacks any contrast to break up shapes - at 300m against a woodland background it just looks like a pale green person. DPM at the same range and conditions is all but invisible.

IMO I still love the DPM, but for use in greener, darker woodland where the darker stripes in the DPM mimic natural shade and 'disrupts' your human shape. I would trust the MTP more on open moors or open woodland aswell as all Arid environments because its pattern better mimics light hitting objects in the foreground - something you don't get as much in heavy woodland. Good video guys.

They are both GREAT CAMO ! I'm from the U.S., and was stationed in Hawaii. I trained with British and ghurka soldiers. I must say I liked DPM better than woodland because its hard to see a repeat in the pattern. I was a camouflage instructor and an artist, I got really good at finding the pattern repeats in woodland, not so with DPM. DPM would be my first choice for dense , moist vegetation, but MTP is a better all terrain pattern. Its too bad the U.K. didn't go with pencott, but it is so $$$ !

Kit like MTP is intended for use in battle, in war, thats the point of it, not for padding about barracks in even though that's what most will do as life is such. But it's there for if and when the wearer finds himself in combat. kit gets dirty in battle. Even if the conflict allows for some laundry its unlike barrack laundry. So...it needs to be looked at how it performs when wet and dirty. Which was my point. Even in training it will get wet and dirty for some time by the way!

I have original MTP kit I traded from a few Brits in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan. I like the way it fits and the only downside is that its a bit light for real lush woodland environments, DPM is actually a bit dark. If you fade DPM a bit, it works pretty good, if you dye MTP in Rit dark brown slightly, it works better. My other option would be using PenCott Greenzone, that stuff is really good in woodland environments, I think it is the best so far. MARPAT is too dark and works better when faded quite a bit. Nonetheless, I thought you guys did a really good job on the video. Mine came out the same way when I used the HD feature, I now dont use it at all as the video quality better resembles real life. Are you making another video in the future? Do you have any MTP (new, unissued) shelters? I am looking into getting me a few ponchos in that pattern to see how it blends in, but i cannot find any material. Thanks guys.

let;s face it guys. if you're as close to another person as the 1st and seconds spots i think you'd be noticed whatever you're wearing! At the more useable 2nd spot the MTP was better. But what i propose is a half half camo outfit with one camo pattern to the front and one to the back in which you can position yourself towards/away from the ambient lighting conditions accordingly to further blend in?

I have a number of pieces of dpm kit, from Falklands era to more recent, and the variations in colour over the years, and from contractor to contractor is also worth noting. On an early 2000s dpm basha that I have, the light areas are almost a bright yellow/buff colour, which in my opinion break up the "dark" outline superbly. Looking at the pattern out of its intended environment, you'd think it was too bright, but in a typical British wood it is amazingly effective, more so than the mtp I reckon.

  • @AaronTheHumanist

I have both myself and prefer the MTP/Multicam stuff myself. they do have pros and cons as said below, and in your test in a woodland setting I think the DPM "might" have the edge, purely based on tree bark darkness, but as MTP would be effective as a desert usage also, and thus dual purpose as per design, that does have it for me.

I prefer the DPM smock material for comfort and warmth.

Thanks for the video. DPM in woodland and jungle is awesome. Thing of finely crafted work. However, It does get very dark when fully wet and can look almost black in some situations. Its not as great in urban scenarios, where fighting is extremely likely in a conflict. MTP is also awesome and really does what it says that it fits many terrains. Bear in mind for both you adopt some natural camo if really fighting anyway, mud, dust, concrete dust, brick dust etc plus foliage, sweet wrappers, wallpaper, cuddly toys etc can all be added on purpose in order to help blend in to terrain if things get very nasty indeed. Thanks for le vid. Liked.

You are slightly comparing apples and oranges with this. DPM was designed in the mid 60s for temperate NW Europe, hence its green. (Desert DPM was issued for sunnier climates, when it was invented much later). MTP was designed due to soldiers moving from one area of vegetation to another while in the same theatre, i.e. when patrolling along the green zone in Afghanistan. If you wore desert DPM you were ok in the arid areas but stuck out like a dog's danglies in the irrigated areas. Of course this is reversed if you wore temperate DPM. MTP was designed to allow you to traverse both areas with the best chance at blending in. I have seen the presentation given by Defence Clothing to Army HQ giving the different types of patterns which were considered and what their discovery times were, it was actually quite surprising how well MTP did. I'd have to see if I still have it for the times.
So in conclusion, Temperate DPM was deigned for NW Europe , so should fit in better in UK when it's green. MTP should give you good concealment all year in all environments.
Oh yes and remember that CS 95 is a style of clothing, just the same as PCS is for MTP. DPM and MTP refers to the pattern, the other letters describe the style.

cnb1971 Are you in the British Army? If you are, do you know if you're allowed to wear your belt over the top? I was reading an article about it around the time of its issue and some of the comments came from active soldiers who were complaining about how the belt isn't shown, and it made the new uniform look "scruffy". Although, I went for my Selection last month and the lads there had their belts over the top. Does it depend on the setting?

    • @cnb1971

+John Travolta is My Dad yes I am and until recently (about 6weeks ago) it was up to the local commander (CO or your unit Commander) as to what and how you wore uniform. The latest direction from Army HQ is that we are all to now tuck our Jackets into our trousers and wear green issue belts. No more stable belts! Hooray!
The ones who were complaining around the time of issue were muppets who are all about looking smart and every thing else is an embuggerence. 'Scruffy' is in the eye of the beholder and after a few years of working in a NATO HQ, jackets out look absolutely fine. The worst offenders are those who want to retain some form of identity such as the jocks and guards, especially with No2 dress. For me the clue is in the title, uniform! I'm all for history but....
Anyway. Bottom line is now jackets tucked in, with green belt.

However, to the naked eye during daylight... it's a big, big mistake. My old smock and trousers that I was issued during the early 80's (handed a rougher set in to the QM when I de-mobed) has the lighter tones, mid green and a more russet brown colouring... and is way superior to any of the 90's kit, for sure !

Damir Pryce Agreed, DPM works great in dense woodland, especially when the season is damp and colours are dark, MTP seems to blend better with earth tones so works better across a wide range of light woodland, grass and arid areas.
I've noticed with my MTP that the colours definitely seem to trick your eye, laying it on some khaki gear it blends with that but lay it down on some green gear and the greens start to stand out and it blends with that instead.
DPM would definitely work better at night though, MTP looks a little too pale in the moonlight.

DPM doesn't work as good in twilight compared to MTP, with DPM it looks like a big dark blob which is quite noticeable, as ambient light gets brighter every year, MTP is just going to get better, it disappears quicker than DPM in these lighter conditions at night as well, don't get me wrong DPM is better than MTP in darker coloured woodland and jungle environment.

Hi guys, well im DPM till i die, but i gotta say that the further back the MTP went back in the woods the more difficult it became to see. DPM works much better when there is a little less light. Either way, great effort lads. Greetings from Ibiza.

To analyse this a little you have to consider the reasons for the DPM and the MTP. DPM was designed to be used in UK woodlands and as a result it's darker and blends in better at home in the UK. 90% of military patrols happen at night and for a UK Woodland environment DPM is perfect. You could be standing right next to someone in DPM at night in the woods and walk straight past without noticing. MTP was created to act as a Multi Terain material as 99% of operations the UK forces are involved in now are on foreign soil. MTP is lighter to take into account the terrain being more open and lighter such as desert and remote and bare mountainous environment. DPM for the UK woodland environment for me is better than MTP. MTP is so light in colour that it stands out totally against a darker background and would catch the moonlight. I served for 10 years so have quite a lot of experience with Camo.

carroj9 It's designed for Northern Hemisphere woodland. Hence it's good for almost any woodland environment and perfect in the UK. It works well in Europe because the woodland and forest landscapes are very similar to back home. Operations in Afghan and Iraq forced the change from DPM. There is very little woodland in those countries and dpm is useless.

Here is a funny one for you. In Iraq we called the Aussies the Ice Cream boys....... their desert camo made them look like ice cream sellers

Clansman...woodland DPM was designed to face the threat, which was primarily Soviet so not just for UK woodland but European woodland, fields etc. A minor point but important historically etc.

MTP was designed with many potential theatres in mind.MTP has been tested all over the world. The deficiencies with DPM were recognised in Afghanistan. DPM was not just designed for UK. Woodland DPM for woodland etc in general, particularly in Europe where the Soviets were high on the threat list. A version of desert DPM was developed during trials with an additional shade, so closer to multicam. This was sold to Iraq at the time (in the 80s?) so could not be adopted by the UK. We went with the sort of white and tan colours only, brighter. Shame as is an improvement having more complex nature, pics can be found of it online in use by Iraqi forces at the time.

DPM for wooded areas in the UK, plus I think it looks better than MTP around the camp anyway.

MTP was designed to be used across multiple terrains, whereas before you had 2 sets of DPM, one for desert conditions and one for woodland.
MTP will never be as good as using a dedcicated pattern to match a particular terrain, but it's halved the production cost of producing 2 sets of combats for everyone, which is probably the main reason it was introduced, to save the government money...

Personally, i use DPM as it suits me better (playing in a woodland area) and when i come across others using MTP in these environments, they stick out so easily, they may as well be wearing arctic camouflage or none at all. I'll be using DPM in an urban environment where i'm sure i'll see a mixture of MTP, DPM, black and more so it will be interesting which one seems to work the best with an urban area containing dark corridors and light outdoor areas.

MTP is a bit bright close up but blends in well in light coloured foliage. DPM a bit dark close up but both I think blend in weel. How abought doing the test later on in the day I.e. near dusk?

I'm in the ATC, and when I joined 2 years ago, I was issued DPM. Now the uniform is altering to MTP. Personally, I think MTP would be more useful for soldiers fighting in afghan and desert terrain, yet DPM is clearly more suited for forestry camo...I think they should keep both and alter to suit their surroundings.

They were equally visible at the closest posision. And they both did extremely well at distance, however the mtp did alittle better i think because the mtp is closer to the colors of the surroundings.

    I agree with many comments.
DPM is better in Woodland and dense jungle.
I was never found wearing it night or day..
MTP is better in light woods & grass though, or warmer countries.
I've not had to evade capture wearing MTP though. Yet.

The answer is simple, MTP, DPM will have several advantages over MTP in the spring and summer, but what about winter and autumn? If you’re planning on being able to change uniforms in accordance with the seasons, DPM is your best bet, however, if you’re planning to only be wearing one pattern, be it because of a financial issue or an extreme survival issue, MTP is your best bet, it blends with almost all environments and you can almost always drop and cover your MTP with the foliage around you to adapt to any environment at all, yes, even snow, I’ve found that MTP works exceptionally well in Arid as well as tundra environments.

I also have both dpm and mtp as I do a lot of hunting and it all depends of the colour of the foliage the dpm in this video does better against the darker surroundings just as the mtp does better against the lighter surrounding on an average scale there both as good as each other because they both have good and bad points great video through guy it sparked a great discussion

Sounds like a cost-cutting measure trying to get a one camo fits all situations with the MTP. Having said that I thought up close DPM was far superior, farther away there wasn’t much in it. I think up close in desert MTP would have bossed the DPM.

  • @tomhickman1006

They are both good enough, movement is what draws attention to you.
The MTP seemed to be less detectable when you started to move.
Keep your movement slow, cover all skin with camo to avoid the shine off your skin.

  • @zadolbali9796

In the woods MTP works better in spring or in autumn, there're more fallen leaves and stuff. DPM is greener and IMHO better for hiding behind a bush or in tall grass.
All in all MTP is multi-terrain, because it's more versatile - usable as in the woods so as in the desert. Like little of everything, but not too much of each.

  • @ninjastar2357

DPM won simply because the patern uses darker based colors, which blends better to the background and trees because of the overall tone of the shaded forest floor. I would like to state that the MTL was a better match for the breaks of light ( brighter parts) in between the trees and brush; however given the fact that they just walked around and didn't actually use any concealment techniques I can't give a true evaluation on either DPM, or MTL camo.

I think DPM is better I woodland such as I the UK and MTP is more designed for Afghan, but I prefer the technical advances in the MTP more,eg.pit zips, enclosed buttons, drain holes in pockets etc.both outstanding jackets though,or should I say not "outstanding".

The darker one won although at the further point both were on par if not the lighter one tiny bit better, maybe the darker one was better because nothing in the wood is as light as the lighter jacket?

I still own one pair of DPM trousers (cold climate) with the Velcro gaiter fastening and the old, shiny green buttons. I think they are earlier issue than Soldier 95, I think possibly mid 80s to 88 pattern. I find my MTP kit & brown Haix boots are still useful for grounds work (& in my opinion) are a more effective camo than the DPMs, but (& I know it isn't the point or purpose of camouflage) I much, much prefer the DPM pattern. When the govt introduced MTP as a part of the PECOC Programme it was universally unpopular amongst the troops, In much the same way that a UN blue top (beret) is less desirable than a regimental lid (british cap badge & beret). I think the issue there was that it is a derivative of the US pattern Multicam and not a "British" design. I remember one comment- A Light Dragoon saying he felt like he didn't look like a British soldier.

I own a MTP pcs and a DPM cs95, I must say that I find that dpm can be too dark at times, also it really does depend on where u r, mtp tends 2 camouflage u much better though. Also I find it more comfortable. At night it doesn't matter which you wear, dpm is dark anyway and the mtp becomes looks darker at night. BTW this is at times when it is pitch black and you have to do 5 he ghost walk and the cat crawl and all that stuff just to get around.

I think it all depends upon the season as colours change dramatically. MTP will work better in autumn but DPM better in the height of summer. Although they both work really well, its like viewing a piece of abstract art. The human eye will psychologically and automatically, inform the brain to seek out a face or recognisable human shape. I think its not the colours, its the necessity of breaking up of the body pattern/outline against any given backdrop that provides the best camouflage. nice 1

i love the style and fit of the mtp, but i have to say it should be theatre specific, like desert dpm was, issued for hot light foliage dusty places, dpm works far better than mtp in the wet woodland dark greens and browns of european theatre, i have both uniforms, i wear mtp as it is current and gucci, but for field work i go for dpm every time! great video lads well done,

I think both are good, but one is too light and the other too dark for your surroundings. That said I think the MTP is blends better with the negative spaces. The darker DPM has a good disruptive pattern, but one just looks like a dark figure in most instances. My eyes gets drawn to it to determine what the dark object is.

may I just say these two did not do either camo justice as wearing them just as 'the uniform ' doesn't disrupt body shape. secondly mtp is multipurpose and when use correctly is effective in temperate landscape to jungle to desert. dpm however is a temperate landscape camouflaged.
